Recreation Services is a service unit within the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba. We provide active living opportunities for 29,000 U of M Students, Faculty & Staff, Alumni and the general public at two campus locations.

This report serves as an opportunity to summarize the past year, to celebrate our successes and accomplishments and to share the narrative of how campus recreation impacted the University of Manitoba community and its stakeholders.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES Highlights • 1,297 instructional/group fitness plus participants at both campus locations • There were 32,471 total group fitness participations at the Fort Garry campus and 10,081 at the Bannatyne campus • Group fitness participations increased by 7% from 2017/18. • 675 personal training/fitness assessments were conducted • 1,671 UM Leagues participants competed in both our hockey and soccer leagues in a total of 459 games

INTRAMURALS & CLUBS Highlights • 2,613 total participants in our Fort Garry campus program • 406 total participants in our Bannatyne campus program • There were approximately 72 intramural games played each week during the season • There were over 15,876 moments of student engagement during the season i.e. every time a student participated in an intramural game = 1 incident of engagement • Intramural sports demographic: 1,852 males (71%) and 761 females (29%)

CAMPUS IMPACT Intramural Benchmark Survey

Community Outreach

The intramural benchmark survey is administered to all UM students who participate in the intramural sports program.

Our facilities and programs are also available to the general campus and surrounding communities. We have an opportunity to impact these communities by creating and providing opportunities for them to be active so that they may live better.

HIGHLIGHTS Did the program increase academic skills in the following areas: • Teamwork skills (77% agree)

• Communication skills (73% agree) • Leadership skills (57% agree)

As part of our community outreach strategy, we offered a number of events that provided complimentary access to our facilities and programs and included our Mother’s and Father’s Day open house, UM Live Well @ Work Week and our bi-annual Free Week open house. Of the 738 people that registered for Free Week, 232 visited Recreation Services for the very first time.

Student Employment Students employed by Recreation Services develop leadership skills, build a sense of community, and enhance their professional development through practical and relevant applications that prepare them for the future. Recreation Services continues to be one of the largest student employers on campus.

HIGHLIGHTS 45+ students were employed as supervisors, officials and scorekeepers with the Intramural Sports program working a combined total of approximately 2,200 hours Over 49 U of M students were employed as Customer Service Representatives working approximately 16,250 hours 13+ students were employed as Fitness Attendants in the Active Living Centre working aproximately 12,000 hours.

ADMINISTRATION

Registered Dietitans Recreation Services brought on four registered dietitians in 2018/19 and started offering a variety of nutrtion services mid January. Each dietitian has completed a degree or their master and the Manitoba Partnership Dietetic Education Program. We sold 9 consultations and 2 follow-ups consultations in the first two months of the service being offered.

SERVICES Initial Consultation (60 min) $70 One of our Registered Dietitians will spend one-on-one time with you to review your current lifestyle goals and help you reach your full potential through nutrition. Follow-up Consultation (45 min) $55 The next one-on-one session will be for 45 minutes at a reduce rate. Meal Plans (60 min) You must first purchase and meet with a dietitian for an intial consultation before having a meal plan completed. After meeting with one of our Registered Dietitians a meal plan will be created specifically for you. The Dietitian will suggest which meal plan option is the best fit for you based on your needs, goals, and lifestyle. Basic Meal Plan $110 | Premium Meal Plan $160 After creating your customized meal plan the Registered Dietitian will meet with you again to review the details and answer any questions you may have about your plan

NEW Active Learning Sessions New active learning sessions combining fitness classes with presentations on the latest information in the field of health and nutrition were offered to members. The following ad was placed in the winter activity guide to increase awareness and encourage participation.

ADMINISTRATION MARKETING The following is a summary of key metrics and highlights from the year’s marketing efforts:

• 523 new social media followers • 5,538 total followers for a 8% increase from 2017/18

• 748 social media posts • Over 10,051 post engagements 18.2% increase

• The Recreation Services home page received an average of 111 visits per day with a bounce rate of 35%.

• 37,596 email list subscribers • 109 emails sent with 817,016 deliveries • 313,604 total opens with an open rate of

43.19%, significantly above industry opens

• 17,500 total email clicks with a click rate of 3.56%

• 3 sponsorship contracts were carried over for the year generating $11,100 in sponsorship income

were printed, with 15,000 mailed to a 5km radius 90,000 door hangers were printed and mailed out to a 10km radius around campus 18,659 on-line digital impressions with an average read time of 4.84 minutes
