I am certain that your time at the University of Maryland has been filled with fearless ideas, friendships and opportunities. As president of this great university, I want to express my hope that you have explored new areas and discovered new talents. The world is waiting for you to share them. As you move beyond the campus, I hope you will remember the intellectual curiosity and drive that inspired your time here. Graduating does not mean that learning has come to an end. It means that you are now equipped to take charge of your own learning. This is a privilege and a profound responsibility. Society’s advancement will depend upon your knowledge and your leadership. Speaker Biographies

ELANA DURÉ STUDENT SPEAKER When Elana Duré visited UMD as a high school student from Woodmere, N.Y., she was struck by how happy and friendly the students were. “It felt like everyone found their place, and I was attracted to that,” she says. Duré found her own place at Maryland as an exceptional and curious student who put a premium on meeting people from different backgrounds and advocating for their needs as an intern in the Office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy (MICA). “Everywhere I look (at UMD), there is a new person with a new perspective and new ideas,” she says. “I think I became a better person by learning about other people.” Duré majored in journalism and minored in international development and conflict management as a student in the Honors College. On campus, she wrote and edited articles for Mitzpeh and The Diamondback and hosted a weekly music program on WMUC; off campus, she was an intern for The Chicago Tribune and The Jerusalem Post, writing articles on topics like dumpster diving and independent musicians. “She consistently emerged as a group leader—one who was firm but kind—and

always able to see the humor in the unpredictable nature of the news,” says Cassandra Clayton, a lecturer in the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. “She’s one person who made sure everything got done, and got better.” Other activities included being an intern for the American Jewish Committee and the president of Terpim, a campus Israeli cultural group. At MICA, Duré was part of a student art and literary journal and helped coordinate events to foster dialogue on issues of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion and other topics. “She exhibited a wonderful balance of patience, sincerity and openness that helped to create a welcoming, organic atmosphere,” says Erica Simpkins, her supervisor at MICA. In the near term, Duré is applying for fellowships and wants to travel to Israel or Greece to teach English and be a freelance writer. She hopes to one day be a music critic and arts and entertainment journalist. “Maryland has really just opened up my eyes,” she says. “It is just such a diverse and wonderful place.”

RETIRED U.S. ARMY CAPT. FLORENT GROBERG ’06 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER The 10th living recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions in Afghanistan, retired U.S. Army Capt. Florent “Flo” Groberg has given selfless service to his country. Groberg, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was born in Poissy, France, and graduated from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Md. He competed in varsity track and cross-country at Maryland and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology and criminal justice. He entered the Army in 2008 and attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga. After being commissioned and completing additional training at the U.S. Army Airborne and Ranger schools, Groberg was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo., as a platoon leader. He first deployed to Afghanistan in December 2009 and was promoted to captain in July 2012. On Aug. 8, 2012, during his second deployment to Afghanistan, Groberg was serving as a personal security detachment commander for Task Force Mountain Warrior, a group responsible for safeguarding coalition and Afghan National Army personnel. While walking en route to

a weekly security meeting at the provincial governor’s compound in Asadabad, Kunar Province, Groberg saw a lone man start to move toward them; he saw the suspect was wearing a suicide vest, then rushed the man and got him away from the patrol. The vest detonated and a second, hidden suicide bomber then exploded his vest prematurely. Four people were killed and 16 soldiers were injured in the attack, but Groberg’s actions are credited with disrupting the suicide bombers’ plans and saving the lives of the rest of the patrol. Groberg sustained significant injuries, including the loss of most of his left calf muscle, a blown eardrum and a mild traumatic brain injury. He underwent more than 30 surgeries during his recovery and medically retired as a captain on July 23, 2015. In addition to the Medal of Honor, which was awarded by President Barack Obama at the White House in November, Groberg was inducted into the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes and has received two Bronze Star medals, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and two Army Achievement medals.

Doctoral Degrees The doctoral degree is the most advanced earned degree conferred by American institutions. There are two distinct types: the practitioner’s degree and the research degree. The first type represents advanced training for the practice of various professions, principally doctor of audiology, doctor of medicine, juris doctor, doctor of pharmacy and doctor of veterinary medicine. These degrees do not involve the completion of original research by the student. The University of Maryland, at the professional school in Baltimore, awarded the first two dental degrees on March 9, 1841.
