Head Coach: Ken Harring (LeMoyne, ’89), Seventh year Assistant Coaches: Keith Beauregard (Saint Anselm ‘05), Kevin Gately (Northeastern ‘95) Pitching Coach: Ryan Williams (Saint Anselm ‘07) Team Manager: Donald Sutton

THE COACHING STAFF Head Coach Ken Harring A native of Manlius, NY, Ken Harring enters his seventh season as head coach of the UMass Lowell baseball program. Under his guidance the River Hawks appeared in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 2005-07 and carried a six-year record of 176-118, an average of nearly 30 wins per season. The 2010 River Hawks finished with a 27-19 record, but fell short of a Northeast-10 Conference Tournament bid due to a tiebreaker. Harring coached five players to the conference All-Star Team and Cam Kneeland was named to the ABCA All-East Region FirstTeam. Harring steered the 2009 squad to a 25-21 record and the NE-10 Tournament semifinals. Under his watch, six River Hawks were named to the NE-10 All-Star Team and Jack Leathersich claimed the NE-10 Freshman Pitcher of the Year honor. With 18 freshmen and sophomores on its 2008 roster, UMass Lowell compiled a 26-24 record and advanced to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Over the season, Harring earned his 100th victory at UMass Lowell and the 200th of his career. The 2007 season saw the River Hawks go 33-20, marking the second straight year and ninth time in school history UML has eclipsed the 30-victory plateau. In 2006, the River Hawks (37-14) posted the second-highest win total in school history and captured their fifth Northeast-10 Conference Tournament championship in six years. UML also earned its second straight and eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last nine years. In his first season at UML, Harring led the River Hawks to a 28-20 record, up from a 22-21 clip in 2004. UML returned to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the region, where it defeated No. 1 Franklin Pierce (8-2) before losing to No. 2 Southern Connecticut (10-3) and the Ravens (16-11). In Harring’s first three seasons, the River Hawks have had eight players named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Northeast Region teams and 26 players named to the NE-10 All-Conference teams. Harring’s appointment to the UML post followed a stellar four-year period as head

coach at Saint Anselm College and four years as an assistant at Northeastern University. The 2004 NE-10 Coach of the Year, Harring guided Saint Anselm to its best season in school history with a 30-22 overall record (24-8 NE-10). He led the Hawks to the 2004 NE-10 regular season championship as well as its first NCAA Tournament bid in school history. Harring’s teams at Saint Anselm significantly improved with each season, culminating with the record-breaking season in 2004. After struggling to a 9-35 finish in 2001, Harring guided the Hawks to a 17-32 clip in 2002, which included a 15-17 showing in the NE-10 (fourth place in the six-team Pepin Division). The 2003 Saint Anselm squad posted a record of 23-20 - its first winning season in 23 years - and captured the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II championship. Along the way, the Hawks finished third in the NE-10 Pepin Division and garnered their first appearance in the NE-10 Tournament. Harring was a four-year player at Division I Le Moyne College where he helped the Dolphins to NCAA Tournament bids in 1986, 1987 and 1989. Inducted into Le Moyne’s Gold Wave Hall of Fame in 2003, Harring helped the Dolphins to a collective record of 54-18-1 in his junior and senior seasons (.740), Le Moyne’s first years as a Division I program. Among Le Moyne’s Division I leaders, Harring ranks second in batting (.367), third in slugging percentage (.609) and 21st in hits (108). He led the Dolphins in runs, hits and doubles in his junior and senior years. After graduating from Le Moyne with a degree in business administration, Harring spent two years in the Atlanta Braves organization with the Durham Bulls of the Carolina League where his manager was former Red Sox skipper Grady Little. Harring accepted his first coaching position at Northeastern University, where he remained from 1996-99. During his stay, the Huskies posted a collective 105-88 record and captured the 1997 America East Conference Tournament. That year, NU advanced to the NCAA Tournament where it defeated BethuneCookman (19-3, 7-4) before falling to Stanford and Cal State-Fullerton in the West Regional. Shortly after his appointment to Saint Anselm, Harring served as the manager of the Keene Swamp Bats, leading them to the 2000 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) championship. Harring and his wife, Shauna, live in Amesbury, MA, with their daughter Mikaela (8) and son Jacob (5).

THE COACHING STAFF Assistant Keith Beauregard

Assistant Kevin Gately

A prolific hitter at Saint Anselm under Ken Harring, Keith Beauregard starts his first year as a member of the River Hawk coaching staff. Beauregard is slotted to work with the outfielders, base runners and hitters. Beauregard arrived in Lowell after a standout career with the Worcester Tornado’s of the Can-Am League and the Saint Anselm Hawks in the Northeast-10. The slugger put up strong numbers with the Tornado’s from 2005-07, with a career average of .288. His finest season came in 2007 as he hit .317 with five home runs, 31 RBI and 15 stolen bases. While a member of the Hawks under Harring from 2002-05, Beauregard set many program records that still stand today. Among his achievements, he owns the Saint Anselm mark for career hits (223), singles (148), doubles (46) and triples (15), while sitting in second for career RBI (102) behind former UMass Lowell assistant Ken Kessaris. While at Saint Anselm, Beauregard earned his degree in Criminal Justice. Beauregard did not immediately enter the coaching field after his professional career was over, working for Prudential Douglas Elliman in New York as a real estate agent from 20082010. He currently resides in his hometown of Leominster, MA.

A longtime assistant coach with Division I strongholds Holy Cross and Northeastern, Kevin Gately enters his first season with UMass Lowell. Gately’s primary focus will be the infielders, while also actively aiding the recruiting efforts. Gately joined UMass Lowell after wrapping up his third season as an assistant coach with Holy Cross. While there, the Crusaders posted three consecutive 20+ win seasons for the first time since the 1920’s. Prior to that, Gately served as the infield, outfield and hitting coach at Northeastern, while also acting as the assistant recruiting coordinator. Gately was the starting shortstop for the Huskies from 1991-94. His crowning achievement came as captain of the 1994 team that won the America East conference, earning a bid to the program’s first NCAA regional tournament since the 1960’s. While a player at Northeastern, Gately earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1995 and then received his MBA at Rivier College in 2006. He resides in Lowell with his wife Renee and two daughters, Julia and Amanda.

Assistant Ryan Williams A former standout pitcher, at UMass Lowell and Saint Anselm for head coach Ken Harring, Ryan Williams enters his second year on the River Hawk staff serving as the pitching coach. Under Willams’ guidance, UMass Lowell pitchers increased strikeouts (+53) and lowered walks (-8) in 2010. Two of his pitchers were named to the Northeast-10 All-Star Team. Williams spent the two seasons prior to joining the UMass Lowell staff pitching professionally, in 2008 with the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League and in 2007 with the St. Joseph Blacksnakes in the American Association. A former Northeast-10 standout, Williams toed the rubber at UMass Lowell for his senior season after three years at Saint Anselm. In 2006,

Williams was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America Third Team, First-Team All-Region, First-Team All-Conference and was crowned the NE-10 Pitcher of the Year. In that season, he led the conference in four categories: ERA (1.03), innings pitched (105.0), strikeouts (95, tied) and strikeouts looking (36). Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Saint Anselm in 2007. A native of Lynnfield, Williams attended St. John’s Prep high school where, in addition to baseball, he competed in football and indoor track and field. He currently resides in Medford, MA.

2011 PREVIEW ARMED AND DANGEROUSS Over the winter months in which players are confined to the gyms and batting cages, the melting snow and warming temperatures can mean only one thing: baseball’s back. For UMass Lowell it offers a chance to reclaim its rightful place in the Northeast-10 standings after the River Hawks were marked with a rare absence for the conference playoffs last year. Edged by a tiebreaker with Merrimack, UMass Lowell’s 2010 season ended in bitter fashion on May 1. The season wasn’t as grim as it appeared. Hamstrung by a fourth place selection in the NE-10 Preseason Poll, the River Hawks’ tie for sixth was overshadowed by what could have been. In reality, UMass Lowell finished with a 27-19 record that included a 29-3 victory over the defending National Champions Lynn University. At year’s end, five players were placed on AllConference Teams and slugger Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) was named to the Division II All-East Region First Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Now the River Hawks stand at the starting gate, selected fourth again in the NE-10 Preseason Poll and ninth in East Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. “If we stay healthy in key spots, like any team, we can do a lot of damage,” said head coach Ken Harring. “We’re more focused on the small things that, at times, bit us last year.” “We have 31 players on this team and from guy 1-to-31 they’ve all bought into what we’re doing. I think they’re more mentally prepared than they’ve ever been.” This time around UMass Lowell is equipped with a bevy of arms led by senior captain Dustin Ramey

(Kingston, N.H.) and Baseball America Preseason All-American Jack Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.). UMass Lowell promises to feature an improved offense as well, led by Kneeland who was named a Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball News. An Arms Race The River Hawks’ formula for success in 2011 will start with pitching. Ramey and Leathersich will anchor a rotation that is both talented and deep, featuring NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection Garrett Cole (Manchester, N.H.) and freshmen Mike Calzetta (Lawrence, Mass.) and Jake Finnegan (Londonderry, N.H.). Ramey is coming off of a stellar junior campaign that earned him a Third Team nod by the conference. The staff workhorse pitched a team-high 69.2 innings while compiling a 7-4 record and a 2.07 ERA. “Dustin is a leader by example, but when he speaks it carries a lot of weight,” said Harring of his captain. “Dustin missed his first two collegiate years due to injury, he’s been through adversity and he had a really good junior year. He’ll be our number one pitcher as long as he’s lining up for me. Leathersich’s sophomore season wasn’t as strong as UMass Lowell had hoped, but the hard throwing lefty still secured a 3-2 record while striking out a team-best 62 batters. Leathersich rebounded in a big way this summer, impressing scouts with a dominant stint in the Cape Cod Baseball League. As of result, the Beverly native was ranked as the third-best Division II product in the upcoming MLB Draft. Adding depth to the back end, Cole should follow up his solid fresh-

2011 PREVIEW man campaign that saw him pitch to a 3-2 record with a 4.06 ERA over 37.2 innings. He will be aided by newcomer Calzetta who submitted a stellar career at Lawrence High School. Calzetta was named a “Player to Watch” by Collegiate Baseball News. Knock on Wood A sore spot for UMass Lowell a season ago was the team’s ability to generate offense. Despite scoring 243 total runs, up 25 from 2009, the River Hawks picked up a large chunk of that in the 29-3 win over Lynn. UMass Lowell was just 8-6 in one-run games, including a 2-1 loss to Merrimack the ultimately decided the tiebreaker. “Last year we struggled against not only good pitching, but average pitching,” Harring said of the offense. “In previous years we’ve knocked pitchers out of games early and put up double-digit runs. Some of that problem has been taken care of with the return of two big bats from injury.” The River Hawks returning from season long injuries are Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) and James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.). The pair will look to give Kneeland some added protection in the lineup. As a freshman, Devlin hit .319 in the leadoff spot with a team-high 58 hits. Devlin also stole 21 bases, drew 20 walks and knocked in 14 RBI en route to a spot on the NE-10 All-Rookie Team. “You put Pat Devlin back at the top of that lineup, it just gives us a different feel where you have a feared guy right at the top,” said Harring. “When Devlin is back, he puts everyone where they should be in the lineup, making us a complete offensive unit.” Katsiroubas joined UMass Lowell after completing his freshman year at

Vermont, but was sidelined last season with an injury. In limited appearances with the Catamounts, Katsiroubas collected six hits, an RBI and drew nine walks. After gaining that experience at the Division I level, coach Harring feels his true value and skill level will be seen this season. “James plays at another level in terms of his intensity,” Harring said. “He’s got that dirt dog mentality and he’s extremely mentally and physically tough. He’s a dead-red fastball hitter that will give the middle of the order some protection.” The crown jewel of the lineup is the heavily decorated Kneeland. Already signed on to play next summer with the Mat-Su Miners of the Alaska Baseball League, Kneeland hit a team-high .313 with 43 RBI and a .508 slugging percentage in 2010. Return to the Postseason The goals set forth for the River Hawks are clear: make the conference playoffs and reach the NCAA Tournament. UMass Lowell hasn’t been to the NCAA’s since 2007—tied for the program’s longest drought since 1979—and has fallen short of an NE10 Championship since 2006. “I think for any competitor that coaches or plays in a game the ultimate goal is to get to the NCAA Tournament,” Harring said. “Our ultimate goal is to get back to the NCAA Tournament and once we’re in that position, with the pitching that we have, we can do a lot of things.” “That being said, we’re going to take this season one step at a time. Our goal right now is to win game number one down in New Jersey—after that we will start taking care of our other goals.”
