THE COACHING STAFF Head Coach Sean Cotter
Sean Cotter, a native of Norwich, Conn., was named head coach of the UMass Lowell softball program on August 4, 2009 and has guided the River Hawks to a 23-27 record overall, as well as an all-time coaching record of 310-213 in his career. In the season prior to Cotter's arrival, the squad played to a 10-31-1 record in 2009, and his arrival on River View Field saw them more than double their win total in 2010. The River Hawks battled to an even 15-15 in Northeast-10 Conference action and earned a trip to the 2010 Tournament. In his first season, he coached P/DP Elyssa Boris to the NE-10 All-Conference Second Team and 2B Krista MacKenzie to the All-Rookie Team, as well. Cotter also hit the 300 career-win milestone on April 13, 2010 against Saint Michael's. He has also spearheaded the Trick-or-Treat for Charity initiative at UMass Lowell, organizing the large-scale community outreach project that sees his team go door-to-door in the Greater Lowell community, collecting canned goods for a local food bank and candy to send overseas to the US Troops abroad. Cotter, who had previously spent the last 10 years as head coach at Plattsburgh State and one season prior as head coach at Post (CT) University, replaced Harry Sauter, who retired after 15 years and a 367-330-4 record with the River Hawks. Through his 11 years of head coaching experience, Cotter has compiled an overall record of 287-186. Cotter was named the head coach at Plattsburgh in 2000 and compiled an overall record of 254-172 which included 10 straight appearances in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament, two SUNYAC regular season titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, and one SUNYAC Tournament championship. Cotter enjoyed perhaps his best season in 2007 when he guided the Cardinals to a 37-14 overall record (16-4 SUNYAC, second), the NCAA Division III Northeast Region Championship and a fourth-place showing at the Division III Softball World Series. Cotter was named the NFCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year and a finalist for NFCA Division II Coach of the Year honors. That season followed a memorable 2006 campaign in which Plattsburgh went 40-9 overall and 19-1 in the SUNYAC, winning both the regular season and tournament titles. During the year, the Cardinals enjoyed a 23-game winning streak, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Northeast Region championship game and capped the year at No. 12 in the NFCA Division III poll. In 2008, Cotter led the Cardinals to a 30-13 record - their third straight 30-plus win season and a share of the SUNYAC regular season title. Just three years after taking over the program in 2002, Cotter led Plattsburgh to a 31-15 clip and an appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Tournament championship game. Prior to moving on to Plattsburgh, Cotter was the head coach at Post University for the 1999 season, where he set a school record for wins in a season (33-16) and guided the Eagles to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament championship game. At the conclusion of the year, he was tabbed to coach in the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association (NEISCA) All-Star Game. In addition, Cotter has been tabbed by Coast-to-Coast Athletics to coach various high school/college all-star teams in Australia (2001, 2002, 2004) and Hawaii (2003). Cotter boasts an impressive coaching tree, exemplifying his former players' and staff's passion for the game. Three former players are now head college coaches: Stephanie Zweig at Plattsburgh State, Jamie Prudhomme at Union College and Tracy Garofalo at Post University, while former assistant Casey Price is now the head Coach at Oswego State. During his junior year at the University of Connecticut (from where he graduated in '97), Cotter was served as head coach at E.O. Smith H.S., where he compiled an overall record of 54-12. In 1998, he guided E.O. Smith to a 23-2 mark, the North Central Connecticut Conference tournament and regular season championships and a semifinal appearance in the Connecticut State Class `L' Tournament semifinal. Cotter has also been active within the sport, serving as a past president of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) softball committee. He has also served on several committees within the NFCA, including the Board of Directors, All-America and Rankings committees as well as the NCAA Division III Northeast Region Rankings Committee. Along with his coaching duties, Cotter was an adjunct professor of sports psychology as well as the game administrator for women's and men's basketball games. Cotter holds a Two-Star Master Coach license by the NFCA and is currently working towards his four-star certificate. He is also pursuing his masters degree in counseling psychology at the University of Connecticut.

Assistant Coach Volunteer Assistant Coach Danielle Mason Jen Yee
Entering her second year at UMass Lowell, Danielle Mason joins the River Hawks staff following one season at Wellesley College and a stellar career at Stonehill College from 2004-08. A pitcher, Mason graduated among Stonehill's all-time leaders in victories (25) and was twice named to the NE-10 All-Academic Team. She maintained a 3.86 grade point average and graduated magna cum laude while enduring a dual major in English and fine arts. She also served as the chair of Stonehill's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as well as the student speaker at the 2008 commencement. Prior to UMass Lowell, Mason served as the pitching coach at Wellesley College, helping The Blue to a 21-14-1 clip, a secondplace showing (12-3-1) in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and the runner-up spot in the NEWMAC Tournament. Prior to attending Stonehill, Mason was a four-year standout at Triton Regional H.S., where she earned Cape Ann League all-star honors from her sophomore to her senior year. She was also named to The Boston Globe all-scholastic team and helped the Vikings to their first-ever Cape Ann League title and the MIAA State Tournament semifinal. Mason, who received her Master's in Education from UMass Lowell, currently works as a teacher in Haverhill, Mass.
The UMass Lowell softball program added Jen Yee, an Olympian, member of the Canadian National Team and standout at Georgia Tech, to its coaching roster for the 2011 season, as announced in Nov. 2010. Yee, who played second base during her collegiate career, will work mainly with middle infielders, assist with hitters and assist with opponent scouting. Her accolades are extensive, including nods as a 2010 NFCA/Louisville Slugger First Team All-American and ACC Player of the Year. She was named to the NFCA All-Southeast Region First Team and All-ACC and was one of three finalists for the USA Softball Player of the Year and Honda Award. She was also an All-ACC Academic Team selection. As part of the Canadian National Team, Yee participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and helped Canada to a medal-round appearance and fourth-place finish. The infielder helped to lead the squad to its highest finish on record in international competition. She finished the Olympics with a team-best .348 batting average, which was higher than any other athletes other than members of Team USA. During her senior campaign at Georgia Tech, Yee reached base safely in all 62 games she played in and led the nation in batting average (.568), slugging percentage (1.270), on-base percentage (.732), runs scored (93) and walks (88). She was tied for first to lead the nation in homeruns (29), as well. She was 21-for-22 in stolen base attempts and struck out only six times in the entire season. She tallied a conference-best 84 hits and 63 RBI during the 2010 season. Yee is a native of North Delta, B.C. and is the daughter of Peter and Maye Yee. She is pursuing her Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering while working in the University's Baseball Research Center at UMass Lowell.
