The Dawn of a New Era First-Year Coach Norm Bazin Looks to Develop Young River Hawk Squad into a Consistent Winner at UMass Lowell First-year head coach Norm Bazin knows that UMass Lowell is capable success on the national stage, he’s seen it first hand. A former River Hawk player from 1990-94 and an assistant coach from 1996-00, Bazin has played alongside a Hobey Baker finalist, defeated New Hampshire to reach the Hockey East Championship game and battled Minnesota in double-overtime for the right to reach the NCAA Frozen Four. Moments like those stay with a player forever and they’re moments Bazin would like to help create for a new generation of River Hawks. To accomplish that goal UMass Lowell needs time, but groundwork for that success lies in developing the players on the ice and creating a culture of winning within program. That development begins with the coach and his players adjusting to each other as Bazin is just beginning to see what his athletes can do in action during their first preseason together. “We’re still getting to know each other,” said Bazin of his team. “I think they’re getting to know what my expectations are for them and, more importantly, I’m starting to learn what they’re capable of—so it’s been a good combination.” “If we claim to be a family and play as a team, then we’re going to be a team right away and that’s what we have. Whether I recruited them or somebody else recruited them, that’s something we cannot control, so we won’t attempt to. We’ll play with who we have, we’ll make these the best possible players that we can and try to develop them to their full potential.” UMass Lowell is forced to rebuild after a disappointing 201011 campaign that finished with a 5-25-4 record and a 4-21-2 clip in conference play—earning the River Hawks a last place finish in the Hockey East standings. The season marked the fewest wins for the program since 1968-69, its second year of existence, when the team played a 13-game schedule. What that season did bring was a great deal of experience for what was a 13-member freshmen class. UMass Lowell graduated just five seniors, while returning 20 players and a remarkable 74.5% (167 of 224 points) of its total offense from a year ago. Among those returnees, the River Hawks welcome back a pair of 30-point scorers in senior David Vallorani and junior Riley Wetmore. Vallorani enters the year with 85 career points and is poised to become the 40th player in program history to break the century barrier. His counter-part, Wetmore, grew as a player last season, doubling his production from his 15-point freshman campaign. Bazin acknowledges that those two can’t succeed alone and expects the River Hawks to take a balanced, aggressive approach to the offense this season. “Ultimately we want to play a Senior Forward

very aggressive, tenacious fore-checking style that generates offense in both transition and off the rush. In order to do that you need certain types of players: you need players who are tenacious in nature and can move very well, but you also need some size.” “Out of all of those things, I see size as something we’re lacking at the moment and we’ll hope to correct that in the future.” While Bazin’s hiring grabbed the headlines this offseason, he won’t be alone in rebuilding the program. Shortly after naming a head coach, UMass Lowell hired a pair of experienced assistants in Jason Lammers and Cam Ellsworth. The duo brings 14 years of combined coaching experience to the table, with stops at various prominent college and junior level programs. “The players really respond to them” Bazin said. “Jason is a very enthusiastic person by nature while Cam is very analytical and certainly a good teacher with the goaltenders. I already see the impact they’re having.” Fans won’t have to wait long to get their first look at the River Hawks. After traveling to Mankato, Minn. to face Minnesota State on Oct. 14-15, UMass Lowell will return east to play Connecticut on the 18th in the Conway Arena in Nashua, N.H. Then comes the program’s first big test when the 2010 NCAA Champion Boston College Eagles visit the Tsognas Center for the 2011-12 home opener on Oct. 28. While many will circle Boston College’s arrival on their calendars, the coaching staff isn’t ready to look any further than the team’s exhibition game on Oct. 8 versus New Brunswick. “I view every game as a measuring stick moment for this club because it’s going to be a work in progress,” said Bazin. “I see the exhibition game being an initial measurement for some of these guys and how they can play against bigger, older and stronger kids.” “Every week we hope to get better and I really feel it’s going to be an ongoing process in measuring our improvement.” FORWARDS

The forwards carried the bulk of the offense for the River Hawks last season and that trend will likely continue in 2011-12. Of the 167 total points coming back, 148 came from this year’s forwards (88.6%). “I think it’s going to be a team that has to score by committee,” said Bazin. “If we can get six 10goal scorers, we can start to make some noise. But we will need six different guys that can contribute and I’m looking forward to seeing who steps up to the challenge.” UMass Lowell’s top three scorers last season all came from the forward line, in Vallorani, Wetmore and senior Matt Ferreira. Those three combined to score 36 goals and will be counted on to repeat

2011-12 Season Preview that success. For Vallorani, 2010-11 was a career year in many respects. The speedster reached double-digit goals (12) for the first time and surpassed the 30-point barrier after finishing each of his first two seasons with 27 points. Perhaps the biggest improvement was his explosive showing on the power play, scoring six goals with the extra man after netting just one as a sophomore. Wetmore has asserted himself a leader for the River Hawks, earning assistant captainship as a sophomore. Stepping into that role, Wetmore tallied a team-high 14 goals and went scoreless in consecutive games just twice last season. Ferreira, marred by injuries early in his career, proved to be a skilled and gritty skater with a nose for the net. After scoring just 10 points through his first two seasons, Ferreira totaled 17 points as a junior on 10 goals and seven assists. Their contributions were aided by explosive freshman Joseph Pendenza who netted 10 goals, more than the club’s other 10 rookie skaters combined (8). Among his Junior Captain tallies, Pendenza electrified the crowds with lightning quick breakaways that resulted in three short-handed goals last season. As UMass Lowell searches for more production from further down the line chart, there are several candidates who could step into primetime roles. Michael Budd, Derek Arnold and Josh Holmstrom all return after reaching double-digit points last season and could be poised for breakout campaigns. Budd has shown promise as a scorer over the course of his career. He enters his senior year with totals of 14 goals and 17 assists. Arnold enjoyed an up-and-down rookie season, totaling two goals and 10 assists. At times, Arnold showed the power to be an impact player, recording a six-point weekend at Princeton (0g, 6a) last December. Holmstrom had 11 assists as a freshman, but consistently created offensive opportunities and should play a larger role this year. In addition, junior Colin Wright has bounced between defense and forward throughout his first two seasons, but showed a scoring touch with seven goals as a freshman. Not to be lost in the shuffle, the River Hawks added several talented freshmen to the mix, including Pittsburgh Penguins’ NHL Draft selection Scott Wilson. Wilson was terrific with the Georgetown Raiders in the Ontario Junior Hockey League last season, scoring 61 points (20g, 41a) in 42 games. He is the first UMass Lowell skater to be drafted since Chris Auger in 2006. Joining Wilson on the front line will be classmates Tyler Brickler, Stephen Buco, Michael Conderman, Christian Cowles and Terrence Wallin. Brickler skated for the Westside Warriors of the British Columbia Hockey League for the past two seasons. Brickler enjoyed a career year in 2010-11, totaling 24 goals and 26 assists through 60 games. Buco joins the River Hawks after starring for the Boston Bulldogs of the Atlantic Junior Hockey League. The two-time AJHL Most Valuable Player and scoring champion, Buco is coming off a 100 point season (44g, 56a) in 2010-11. Conderman, who will be sidelined with an injury for the firsthalf of the year, played for the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United

States Hockey League. The forward totaled 32 points (11g, 21a) in 57 games with Muskegon. Cowles spent last season with the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. He totaled 30 points (9g, 21a) in 29 games played while helping the Monarchs win the EJHL Championship. Lastly, Wallin helped lead the Gunnery School to three New England Prep School Hockey Conference (NEPSHC) West Championships and served as team captain as a senior. For his career, Wallin totaled 38 goals and 73 assists in 77 games—including a 26 point (9g, 17a) senior season. “It’s going to be a real experience to see some of these young men as freshmen and in two years, be able to talk about how much they’ve grown physically and mentally in that time,” said Bazin of his freshmen class. DEFENSEMEN Though much of the River Hawks scoring punch came from the forwards last season, UMass Lowell’s balanced philosophy will carry over to the defensemen. Riley Wetmore “We score as a line,” said Bazin. “If a defenseman is up in the play, ahead of the forward, that forward will cover for the defenseman so he will not be held back in any way, shape or form.” “As a group of five in my last two years at Hamilton, we’ve had forwards be the top scorers on the team and we’ve had defenseman fill that role. So really it lends itself more to see what type of personal you have and working with that personal to make them the best they can be.” That philosophy will not be without its challenges. UMass Lowell graduated its high-scoring defenseman Maury Edwards, a 2009 AllAmerican, who recorded 28 goals and 51 assists in his career as River Hawk. Looking to replace that production is sophomore Chad Ruhwedel. The California native led all UMass Lowell rookies in scoring with 13 points (2g, 13a). Ruhwedel recorded four multi-point games and was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week on Oct. 25, 2010. In addition to Edwards, the River Hawks lost two other starting defensemen in the graduation of Ryan Blair and departure of Chris Ickert. With the position wide open for competition, veterans and rookies alike will be battling for the spots. Among the contenders, the River Hawks have a pair of defensiveminded skaters in senior Tim Corcoran and sophomore Daniel Furlong. The duo combined for just two assists, but played a stay-at-home style. A newcomer with experience, junior transfer Malcolm Lyles played two seasons at Boston College from 2008-10, but then left to play junior hockey. An extremely talented puck handling defenseman, Lyles scored 30 points (8g, 22a) with the Vernon Vipers in 2010-11 while winning the British Columbia Hockey League Championship and being named a league All-Star. The River Hawks also feature four freshmen defensemen on the roster, all hailing from the USHL: William Eiserman, Zack Kamrass, Micki Mihailovich and Jake Suter. Eiserman was a lock-down defenseman for the Tri-City Storm last season, scoring four assists. A local product, Eiserman led Newburyport High School to the Massachusetts Division II State Championship in 2008-09.

2011-12 Season Preview During his two year stint with the Sioux Falls Stampede, Kamrass skated with current UMass Lowell players Furlong, Holmstrom and Ruhwedel. A dependable blue-liner, Kamrass scored three goals and 23 assists while helping lead the club to the Western Conference Finals in 2011. Mihailovich was an assistant captain for the Muskegon Lumberjacks last season, scoring a goal and 12 assists. The gritty skater led the USHL with an astounding 265 penalty minutes. Lastly, Suter was named the Sioux City Defenseman of the Year and is the son of NHL legend and Stanley Cup winner Gary Suter. He tallied one goal and six assists in 2010-11. “I think several of those young men will have an immediate impact on our team, and I look for it because we need them,” Bazin said. “It’s going to take some time on the ice to figure out what they can do at the college level, because it’s vastly different than the junior level.” GOALTENDING Likely the biggest question mark entering the 2011-12 season, goaltending issues plagued the River Hawks last season. UMass Lowell allowed a league-worst four goals per game last year, surrendering 136 total. The River Hawks return a trio of goaltenders from last season: Marc Boulanger, Doug Carr and T.J. Massie. Boulanger and Carr carried the lion’s share of minutes and each showed flashes of potential amidst a difficult season. Boulanger carried an 0-11-1 record, with a 3.96 GAA and .889 save percentage. Looking past the numbers, he recorded 40 or more saves in two of his last five starts. Likely his best showing of the season came on Nov. 2, when Boulanger held NCAA Tournament-bound Merrimack College scoreless in 39 minutes of relief duty. Carr enjoyed a slightly better season with a 4-13-3 record, a 3.63 GAA and a .896 sv%. While facing several road bumps as a rookie, Carr did record five starts in which he allowed two goals or less. In his final five appearances, Carr went 1-2-2 with a .913 sv%. Massie, while not expected to play major minutes, enters 201112 with a 2-2-0 career record. Challenging for playing time this season will be freshman netminder Brian Robbins. A two-time EJHL All-Star with the Capital District Selects, Robbins led the league in 2010-11 with 1818 saves, nearly 800 more than the next closest goaltender. Robbins also led the league in saves in 2009-10 with 1352, recording a .920 sv% and

4.26 GAA. AN EVOLVING PROGRAM With so much emphasis placed on the future of UMass Lowell, the groundwork for change has begun this offseason. In addition to hiring a new coaching staff, the River Hawks appointed Devan McConnell to the newly-created position of Director of Sports Performance. McConnell joins the program after spending the past two seasons at Stanford University as a Sports Performance Coordinator. “It’s been a tremendous asset to have Devan on board this summer,” said Bazin. “Devan is going to be a great addition to our staff because he’ll lend a different voice in the weight room.” “More importantly, that’s his area of expertise; he’s going to be able to give guys some consistency and accountability in that weight room because this is what he knows. I think it’s going to be tremendous for our program in the future in developing some of these young men to get stronger and more agile so that when they get on the ice they can produce more.” In addition to personal, Bazin acknowledges that the groundswell for positive change at UMass Lowell had already begun before he was hired. Those changes, both academically and athletically are shaping the campus into an attractive option any NCAA bound athlete. “It’s evolved in a very positive manner since I left in 2000,” admired Bazin. “When you talk about a program, you first have to talk about the academics because we are an institution of higher learning. The academic portion of the campus has grown and progressed dramatically and it’s fascinating to see.” “When you get to the arena, there have been so many improvements to the Tsongas Center that it’s exciting for me as a coach and former player to come back and add to that.” Among the improvements to the Tsongas Center, the rink underwent dramatic change this offseason. The chillers underneath the ice bed were replaced to give the facility higher quality surface, while the boards were replaced and seamless glass was installed to enhance the viewing experience for fans. “Now we’re trying to make improvements here in the upcoming year to the facility to enhance our program and our ability to develop our kids,” added Bazin. “We want to get more fans to the games, make a better fan experience and, more importantly, a better student experience for our athletes.”

Over 30 Years of NHL Success UMass Lowell and the National Hockey League have a history dating back to 1979 that has produced team captains, All-Stars and even Stanley Cup Championships. In total, 14 former River Hawks have worn an NHL sweater. Last season alone, four players were on an NHL roster—including Dwayne Roloson of Eastern Conference finalist Tampa Bay Lightning. He was joined by Ron Hainsey of the Atlanta Thrashers, Ben Holmstrom of the Philadelphia Flyers and Carter Hutton of the San Jose Sharks. Starting with four-time Stanley Cup winner Craig MacTavish, UMass Lowell has been represented in the NHL for every year since 1979. MacTavish played for 17 seasons and won three championships with the Edmonton Oilers (‘87, ’88, ‘90) and one with the New York Rangers (‘94). With numerous players populating the AHL and current draft picks on the River Hawk roster, the program’s storied history in NHL will continue to grow.

Norm Bazin Head Coach

Norm Bazin, who played at UMass Lowell from 1990-94 and served as an assistant coach from 1996-2000, was named the sixth head coach in the ice hockey program’s history on April 21, 2011. He returns to the University following three successful seasons as head coach at Hamilton College, preceded by eight years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Colorado College. “Norm Bazin brings great passion not just for the hockey program, but for the University as well,” said University Chancellor Martin T. Meehan. “We believe he can recruit top-quality talent, develop that talent, and raise the bar of expectation at UMass Lowell. In addition, Norm’s past experiences as a student and a coach demonstrate clearly that he places education at the center of the college experience.” Bazin replaces Blaise MacDonald, who resigned at the end of the 2010-11 season after 10 years. “UMass Lowell is my alma mater and it has a special place in my heart,” Bazin said. “Hockey East is one of the premier conferences in the country. I was impressed with the dynamic changes Chancellor Meehan and Dana Skinner have made. The energy and the improvements have been tremendous.” Bazin inherits a program which struggled to a 5-25-4 record (4-21-2 in Hockey East) last year but is expected to return 24 players for the 2011-12 season. “I think the long term potential for the program is the ability to compete for the three major championships,” Bazin noted, referring to the Hockey East regular season, tournament and NCAA championships. “Secondly, I think we have a first class facility, a world-class university, a loyal fan base and a solid hockey foundation in terms of support from our administration and staff.” Fast Success at Hamilton College, NCAA Prominence at Colorado College Under Bazin’s direction, Hamilton College improved from a 9-15-1 record in 2008-09 to a 15-9-2 clip in 2009-10 and a 14-7-4 record last season, in which the Continentals finished atop of the New England Small Conference Athletic Conference (NESCAC) regular season for the first time in school history. For his efforts, Bazin was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year the last two years and helped guide four players to NESCAC All-Conference honors, including 2010-11 Player of the Year and All-American Joe Houk. Additionally, he was named a finalist for the 2011 Edward Jeremiah Award for NCAA Division III Coach of the Year. Hamilton’s 15 victories in 2009-10 marked its highest win total since the 2003-04 season. Consistent with his belief that academic success breeds athletic achievement, Bazin helped guide 11 members of Hamilton’s ice

hockey team to the NESCAC Winter All-Academic Team honors in his three years. Prior to becoming head coach at Hamilton, Bazin spent eight years at Colorado College as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator and was instrumental in leading the Tigers to a 205102-22 overall record (.623) and a 131-76-17 clip in WCHA play (.585). During Bazin’s tenure, Colorado College made six trips to the NCAA Tournament - four quarterfinal bids and a Midwest Region title/Frozen Four appearance in 2005 - and won the WCHA regular season title three times. Among the players Bazin mentored include 19 WCHA allstars, 13 All-Americans and two Hobey Baker Memorial Award recipients in Peter Sejna (2003) and Marty Sertich (2005). Additionally, 12 players during Bazin’s time went on to play in the NHL. Bazin was an assistant coach at UMass Lowell from 19962000 under Tim Whitehead and helped guide the River Hawks to Hockey East Tournament semifinal appearances in 1997 and 1998. He was integral in recruiting standouts such as All-American Ron Hainsey (currently in his third season with the Atlanta Thrashers) as well as Hockey East all-star Brad Rooney (`01); Yorick Treille (‘02) and Laurent Meunier (‘02), both members of the French Olympic squad at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. UMass Lowell’s Unsung Hero As a player, Bazin compiled 32 goals and 36 assists (68 points) in 134 career games. He peaked as a senior with 20 goals and 15 assists - including 17 goals in UMass Lowell’s final 19 games - as the River Hawks posted a 25-10-5 record. That year, he helped lead UMass Lowell to the Hockey East Tournament Championship game where it fell, 3-2, to Boston University. Along the way, Bazin scored all three goals in a 3-0 quarterfinal victory over Merrimack and also added a goal in a 4-3 triumph at Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament first round. Team honors were plentiful for Bazin as he was named the recipient of the Most Improved Player, Unsung Hero and Gus Coutu (Most Spirited) awards - all voted upon by his teammates.

Bazin was also an exemplary student, earning Dean’s List honors in each of his eight semesters as well as a place on the Hockey East Academic Honor Roll three times. In 1993, he received the Distinguished Public Service Award from the University for his work with the Special Olympics and SHARE. Bazin achieved his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in just 3 ½ years and earned his master’s degree in education administration in 1999. “The characteristics which have made Norm such a successful leader since he graduated from UMass Lowell will pay dividends for our hockey program and University,” Director of Athletics Dana Skinner said. “We are pleased that one of our most successful alums is returning to the University and we welcome Norm, his wife Michelle, also an alumna, and their two children to the UMass Lowell family.” Bazin played professionally for the Birmingham Bulls of the ECHL and the Cincinnati Cyclones of the IHL in 1994-95. A native of Notre Dame de Lourdes, Manitoba, Bazin and his wife, Michelle, have two sons, Blake (7) and Coleston (4).

Jason Lammers Assistant Coach

Jason Lammers enters his first season as an assistant coach with UMass Lowell hockey. Lammers brings over a decade of coaching experience to UMass Lowell, most recently spending the last two seasons with Colorado College. In addition, he has coached at Ohio State University, SUNY Geneseo, Princeton University, University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Clarkson University and Hobart College. “I have known Jason for a long time,” said Bazin of Lammers. “He has tremendous professionalism, a strong work ethic and is a very positive person. He is an experienced coach who brings his established hockey network to the staff. We welcome Jason and his family to Lowell.” While at Colorado College, Lammers headed the recruiting effort that resulted in the 8th ranked recruiting class nationwide in 2010 and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011. He also oversaw the team’s forwards and offense, including individual skill development, puck support and tactical adjustments. “I’m excited to join the UMass Lowell staff and look forward to the challenge of revitalizing the program,” said Lammers of the opportunity. “The leadership qualities of coach Bazin are outstanding and I look forward to moving my family to the UMass Lowell community.” “I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great coaches over my career; almost all of whom have been nominated for Coach of the Year, and was able to learn a lot from each one of them. The connections and relationships I’ve developed over the years have been strong and will help with the coaching and recruiting elements at UMass Lowell.” Prior to joining the Tigers, Lammers spent three seasons at Ohio State that included an NCAA Tournament bid in 2009. In addition to his recruiting duties, he assisted in the operation of the team’s in-season youth hockey clinics and summer hockey schools. A 1998 graduate of SUNY Geneseo, Lammers served as the head coach of his alma mater from 2005-06. In his only season behind the bench for the Knights, SUNY Geneseo compiled a 19-9-2 record, won the SUNYAC Tournament and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. He coached two All-

SUNYAC players and four SUNYAC All-Tournament Team members. In addition to overseeing the program and its staff, Lammers managed the Ira S. Wilson hockey rink while at SUNY Geneseo. Lammers spent the two seasons previous to that working under Guy Gadowsky, current Penn State coach, at Princeton in 2004-05 and AlaskaFairbanks in 2003-04. While with the Nanooks, he helped the team win the Governor’s Cup and recruited what was then the highest NHL draft pick in school history, Tyler Eckford, an All-American seventh round selection in the 2004 draft. Lammers got his coaching start at Clarkson University as a volunteer assistant in 2000-01 and returned full-time in 2002-03, with a stint at Hobart College in between. While with the Golden Knights, he designed and implemented all team strength and conditioning programs and helped the club win the ECAC Regular Season Championship in 2000-01. Throughout his career, Lammers has worked a number of summers with USA Hockey to coach its Select Festivals dating back to 2004. Before entering coaching, Lammers spent three years playing professional hockey in the West Coast Hockey League with the Phoenix Mustangs and the Idaho Steelheads. In his final season, he helped the Mustangs capture the Taylor Cup Championship. As a player for SUNY Geneseo, Lammers was the team captain as a senior in 1998 while earning SUNYAC All-Conference Second Team honors as a defenseman. He graduated with a B.A. in History while serving as a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Board and Phi Alpha Theta, an honorary history fraternity. A native of Pittsburgh, Penn., he and his wife, Michelle, are the proud parents of a two-year-old son, Rhett, and a daughter, Bryn, born in April 2011.

Cam Ellsworth Assistant Coach

Cam Ellsworth was named to the UMass Lowell hockey staff as an assistant coach in June. Ellsworth joins the River Hawks after three seasons as an assistant coach with the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League. He also adds eight seasons of professional and collegiate experience as a goaltender for Michigan Technological University and several teams in the ECHL. “We are excited to add Cam to our staff,” Bazin said. “His enthusiasm was evident throughout the interview process.” “He will draw from his successful athletic career as he mentors our young goaltenders. His coaching experience was spent in one of the premier junior development leagues and he will be a strong addition to the organization.” While coaching the Musketeers, Ellsworth assisted in all facets of recruiting, including scheduling the trips, player identification and calls. He also coordinated the team’s video analysis and travel itineraries. “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to join a school with such great history,” said Ellsworth of UMass Lowell. “I’ll be working with two great guys and learning from them as we rebuild the program.” “I hope to bring all my different experiences together to help each player

individually as we build towards a large collective goal.” Over the last three seasons, Ellsworth has recruited or coached 10 players drafted by the NHL and another 43 who committed to Division I hockey programs. Among the players he coached were former Merrimack College standout Stephane Da Costa and current UMass Lowell sophomore Joe Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass.), who both skated with Sioux City in 2008-09. Prior to entering the realm of coaching, Ellsworth played for four teams over four seasons in the ECHL: Augusta Lynx, Greenville Grrrowl, Pensacola Ice Pilots and Stockton Thunder. His best professional season came in 2006-07, backstopping the Thunder to its first playoff appearance in franchise history with 14-13-3 record, 2.62 goals against average and .907 save percentage. Ellsworth graduated cum laude with a 3.56 grade point average from Michigan Tech with a B.S. in Business Administration in 2005. A four-year letter winner with the Huskies from 2001-05, Ellsworth was a three-time WCHA All-Academic Team member from 2003-05. He ranks as the program’s all-time leader in games played (117) and saves (3,510). A native of Leamington, Ont., Ellsworth has been married for six years to his wife Julie.

Devan McConnell

Director of Sports Performance Devan McConnell was named UMass Lowell’s first Director of Sports Performance in September of 2011. The newly-created position is tasked with integrating a cutting edge sports performance program into the University’s athletic department. McConnell works primarily with the Division I hockey team, but also oversees performance training for the 16 Division II programs. “We’re pleased to have Devan join the staff at UMass Lowell,” said Athletic Director Dana Skinner. “His knowledge in the field, combined with his experience at Stanford, will be of great benefit to our student-athletes as he develops a first-rate center for sports performance.” Prior to joining UMass Lowell, McConnell served as the Sports Performance Coordinator at Stanford University from 2008-11. He worked closely with the women’s basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball--all NCAA Tournament regulars. During his tenure, the men’s volleyball program won an 2010 NCAA Championship. While at Stanford, McConnell also served as the Performance Education Coordinator, instructing the Cardinals’ personnel, building a staff library and

scheduling guest speakers. “UMass Lowell provides a great opportunity for me to work with a Division I hockey program and thriving Division II teams while building a top-tier sports performance program from the ground up,” said McConnell. “The facilities here are great, the tradition of success is strong and there is a lot of room for growth because of the commitment from both the administrative staff and the student-athletes.” Before his appointment to Stanford, McConnell worked at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, one of the leading sports performance facilities in the Northeast. He also spent time working with two NHL teams, the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks. McConnell is a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). He is also a Functional Movement Screen Specialist. McConnell received his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Fitchburg State in 2008. While attending Fitchburg State, he was a standout hockey player, twice recognized as the team’s Most Valuable Player. A native of Seattle, WA, McConnell attended Lake Stevens High School. He currently resides in Somerville, MA with his wife Erica.

Artie Poitras

Head Athletic Trainer Arthur Poitras, M. Ed, LATC, is in his 30th year at UMass Lowell and oversees an athletic health care staff of three which serves more than 300 men’s and women’s athletes. A native of Dracut, Massachusetts, Poitras was named Head Athletic Trainer for the River Hawks in the fall of 1999 and is primarily responsible for the day-to-day health care needs of the UML ice hockey team. In addition to standard athletic training duties, Poitras handles the administration of athletic insurance and budget issues and is a staff liaison with outside medical providers. On the national level, Poitras serves as the representative to the College/University Athletic Trainer’s Committee, dealing with issues surrounding college athletic trainers around the country. In 2005, Poitras received the Marc Connelly Award, given anually to a non-player who made a significant positive impact on the River Hawk hockey program.

A 1981 graduate of Springfield College, Poitras earned his degree in Physical Education and received his National Athletic Trainers Association certificate in 1982. Poitras joined the athletic training staff at UML as a graduate assistant in 1981 before becoming a full-time assistant in 1983. In 1989, he earned his National Strength and Conditioning Association certification and completed his Master’s degree in Education Administration at UMass Lowell in 1995. Poitras, who has missed one game since UML’s entry into Division I in 1983-84, resides in Dracut with his wife, Leslie, and son Timothy, 12, who are regulars at UML hockey games.

Sean Patno

Head Equipment Manager Sean Patno enters his fourth season as equipment manager for UMass Lowell hockey. He is responsible for ordering, issuing, maintaining and repairing all River Hawk hockey equipment. In addition, Patno coordinates the team’s traveling arrangements and student worker schedules. A former standout UMass Lowell baseball player, Patno starred at shortstop for the better part of four seasons (2004-7). A sure-handed defender, he currently holds three program defensive assist records, most in a career (499), season (162) and game (11). In addition, he has the River Hawks’ record for sacrifice hits in a career (22). He was career .279 hitter. A 2007 graduate of UMass Lowell, Patno holds a bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Education.

A four-year baseball and hockey player at Chelmsford high school, Patno excelled in both sports. Named a Merrimack Valley Conference All-Star in baseball, he helped lead Chelmsford to the MVC Championship. Patno won the MVC Championship on the ice as well, even guiding Chelmsford to the Massachusetts Super Eight Tournament. Patno resides in Chelmsford.
