The theatre was built at the end of the 1st century B.C. by Agrippa, friend and son in law of Augustus, in opus reticulatum and tufa opus quadratum for the portico on the façade, together with the piazzale delle Corporazioni, located behind the stage. It underwent alterations to the scene building, rebuilt higher, around the middle of the 1st century and in the Hadrianic period. At the end of the 2nd century AD it was restored and enlarged in brickwork. At the end of the 4th century, the building was restored by the prefect of the annona Ragonio Vincenzio Celsio, who built a hydraulic system that allowed the orchestra to be flooded and water performances to take place there. Between the end of the 5th century and the 6th century, the arches of the first order were walled up to turn the theatre into a defensive fortress. It was excavated in the years between 1880 and the beginning of the 20th century and extensively restored in 1927. Today it hosts performances and spectacles.

Teatro dell'Opera di Roma - Teatro Costanzi.
The Visit is in collaboration with the Stage Direction The Opera House the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, the result of the tenacious dream of its founding father, the building contractor Domenico Costanzi, which still bears his name today. The project favoured acoustics thanks to a horseshoeshaped structure, conceived as a sound box to enhance the sound of the operas performed. Three tiers of boxes, an amphitheatre and a gallery could accommodate up to 2,212 spectators, surmounted by a splendid dome frescoed by the Perugian Annibale Brugnoli. The Teatro Costanzi was inaugurated on 27 November 1880 with Semiramide by Gioachino Rossini.

The set design workshop of the Rome Opera House is located in Palazzo Pantanella. It was built on the initiative of Michelangelo Pantanella, between 1878 and 1881. Since 1931, this ancient building, overlooking the Circus Maximus, has housed the costume and set design warehouses, as well as some technical services, of the Rome Opera House. These include the workshop for painting on canvas with pigments and rabbit glue.

Teatro de’ Documenti di Luciano Damiani
The building, called the Colosseum because of a colossal statue that stood nearby, was built in the 1st century A.D. at the behest of the emperors of the Flavian dynasty, and hosted shows of great popular appeal, such as gladiatorial hunts and games, until the end of the ancient age. The building was, and still remains today, a spectacle in itself.
22 September: Thursday - Working Day 4
The Colosseum
The Flavian Amphitheatre, more commonly known as the Colosseum, stands in the archaeological heart of the city of Rome and welcomes large numbers of visitors every day, attracted by the fascination of its history and complex architecture.
At the end of dinner we enter the Portico di Ottavia, and see what remains of the Theatre of Marcellus https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theatre_of_Marcellus and free to return to our hotels at our leisure.
The Document Theatre, described as an 'architectural jewel', is a masterpiece of theatre http://www.teatrodidocumenti.itarchitecture
The Teatro di Documenti, in the heart of Rome's Testaccio district, was designed and built by Luciano Damiani, who is recognised as the greatest set designer of the 20th century and one of the most innovative theatre artists of all time. After having worked in the world's leading drama and opera houses, Damiani decided to create a space that would express his idea of theatre, a space that, without denying the past and tradition, would become the "theatre that did not exist before". Teatro di Documenti was born from Damiani's dream of creating a "democratic and popular" theatre where people, actors and spectators, are united in the making of the performance. The structural unification of stage space, audience space and actors' space cancels the traditional separation between stage and stalls, and disintegrates the 'backstage/backstage' dualism.

After a busy day I now propose that we go to eat at the Roman ghetto, but to go there I propose that we do it on foot following a small tour always with the eyes of Umberto and Trixie. Here we sit down and eat typical Jewish Roman cuisine such as, for example, Carciofi alla giudea, fried battered vegetables, etc. There are several restaurants, but the most recommended are those with Roman Jewish cuisine.
Afternoon
Argentina Theatre Museum
The Argentina Theatre was inaugurated on 31 January 1732 with a performance of the opera Berenice composed by Domenico Sarro. In 1730 the Sforza Cesarini family started the theatre construction project from a revaluation of the small palace and tower they owned (Casa del Burcardo): a part of the secondary building was demolished to make room for the stage while the tower and other rooms in the palace were used as theatre services and artists' dressing rooms.
Crossing the street, one enters Via del Teatro Valle.
The Visit is in collaboration with the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural HeriThetageTeatro Argentina, inaugurated in 1732 by Duke Giuseppe Sforza Cesarini, houses a small museum in the attic documenting its history, designed by Cecilia Pericoli Ridolfini in 1973.
The museum is divided into three sections: the first, topographical, documents the transformations of the urban area where the theatre was built; the second includes remains of the ancient structure and the previous decorations of the theatre: four fragments of the oldest preserved velarium (ceiling), with putti and festoons of flowers (18th 19th centuries) are exhibited; two paintings of the ancient theatre (18th 19th centuries) are on display. There are four fragments of the oldest preserved velarium (ceiling) with putti and festoons of flowers (18th 19th century); two wall paintings in the Pompeian style (late 19th century); the final cartoon and five original studies for the curtain depicting the 'Nymph Egeria advising Numa Pompilius'; two preparatory drawings for the curtain of the Apollo Theatre, all works by Cesare Fracassini (1838-1868), a famous Roman painter. Also of interest: a caricature of Nicola Zabaglia by P.L. Ghezzi (1674 1755); an ancient white fir tree truss from the original theatre roof; an 18th century wooden rotone for raising the curtain and scenes; bas reliefs by A. Biagini (1926), dating back to Marcello Piacentini's renovation.
Now we have to move from Teatro Argentina in Rome, to go to Teatro Valle. We cannot take public transport because it is very close. It will also be a short walk We have to walk along a stretch of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, meeting the Palazzo Caffarelli Stoppani, designed by Raffaello Sanzio and mentioned in the life of Donato Stopani, the hypothetical builder of the stage and machinery of the Drottningholm Theatre in Stockholm. Further to the left is the church of San Andrea della Valle, which is worth a short visit. The basilica was designed and built by Giacomo Della Porta, Francesco Grimaldi and Carlo Maderno between 1590 and 1650. Giacomo Puccini set the first act of TOSCA here. Behind it is Via di Grotta Pinta, where Rome's first theatre in masonry (theatrum marmoreum), the Theatre of Pompey, was built. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theatre_of_Pompey

Teatro Argentina
The Visit is in collaboration with the Theatre of Rome
The theatre was originally built entirely of wood with the exception of only the walls and stairs in masonry; the hall was designed by architect and marquis Gerolamo Theodoli with a horseshoe shape, to better meet acoustic and visual requirements. The stalls, paved with wooden boards, were completed by forty rows of stalls, while the one hundred and eighty six boxes were arranged in six tiers. The Teatro Argentina, according to the testimonies reported by foreign visitors in the 18th century, was considered the most important Roman theatre.
Dr.Speakers:SilviaCabasino, Head of Cultural and International Activities Actors from the Compagnia Stabile, who will tell us about the Teatro Argentina in a different guise. http://www.teatrodiroma.net/doc/10/visitehttp://www.teatrodiroma.net/adon.pl?act=doc&doc=3117spettacoloal teatro argentina/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teatro_Argentina
It was erected at the behest of Consul Pompey between 61, the year of his third triumph, and 55 B.C., the year of his second consulate, and was an extraordinary innovation for Rome: Roman law forbade the construction of theatres in masonry, to maintain the religious character that the theatre possessed from the Greek tradition; temporary theatres in wood were only erected near places of worship. In the Middle Ages, this structure also became a quarry for building materials and the basis for later buildings. The houses of the Orsini family and the church of Santa Barbara dei Librai were built on the ruins of the cavea.
The outline of the cavea is still recognisable in the streets of Grottapinta, for the inner part, and in the path between Via del Biscione and Via dei Giubbonari for the outer part. Remains of the walls and arcades of the portico, as well as inserted in the cellars of later buildings, can be seen in the basements of the noble palaces in the area.
With the visit to the Teatro Valle over, our intense morning of studying Italian theatre comes to an end. Well then, we take a lunch break. We head, on foot, to Piazza Sant'Eustacchio. Here there is an old coffee shop with a roastery and one of the best espresso coffees in Rome.
The coffee can be taken outdoors looking at the lantern of the dome of Sant'Ivo at the wisdom of Borromini, the great Baroque architect. Besides coffee, there are a thousand special delicacies. After this short, well deserved break, we head towards Piazza San Luigi dei Francesi and enter the church of the same name. Here we observe the pictorial triptych by Michelangelo Merisi known as Caravaggio with the stories of St Matthew. The light in these paintings is extraordinary. It helps us reflect on the art of theatre between the poses of the 'actors' and the wonderful light. How can we apply this study to Sabbatini? Or use modern techniques? Do we have a light front light and then a shaper coming in through the door on the right? Do we use a discharge lamp? How nice to be able to look at a painting using the eyes of the theatre.
The Teatro Valle 'Franca Valeri' is a theatre in Rome, located in the Sant'Eustachio district, and is the oldest modern theatre in Rome. Inaugurated in 1727 to a design by architect Tommaso Morelli, the theatre was repeatedly the focus of maintenance and modernisation works, which involved various architects and artists. Among the most important works it hosted were the Roman premiere of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni (1811) and the world premieres of several operas by Gioachino Rossini and Gaetano Donizetti, as well as Luigi Pirandello's Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore (1921). In three hundred years of history, the Valle has seen the greatest Italian artists succeed one another on its stage, from Goldoni to Donizetti, from Rossini to Pirandello, and then Eleonora Duse, Gabriele d'Annunzio, Totò, Anna Magnani, Eduardo de Filippo, Vittorio Gassman, Franca Rame and Dario Fo.

On our way out, we pass the Senate of the Republic and head towards Piazza Navona, one of Rome's most famous monumental Piazzasquares.Navona, in the days of ancient Rome, was the Stadium of Domitian, which was built by Emperor Domitian in 85 and in the 3rd century was restored by Alexander Severus. It was 265 metres long, 106 metres wide and could seat 30,000 spectators. Piazza Navona in the 17th century, restored by Gianlorenzo Bernini, is a symbol of Baroque Rome, with architectural and sculptural elements by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (the Fountain of the Four Rivers in the centre of the square, representing the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the Rio de la Plata, the four corners of the Earth and the other two fountains at opposite ends)
