Pre-Law at

UMass Dartmouth Studying law develops analytical, logical, and creative-thinking skills necessary for a legal career, but also for rewarding careers in advocacy, business, and education. Whether you wish to pursue law school, add legal knowledge to your skill set, or you’re curious about the judicial process, UMass Dartmouth offers multiple pathways to a legal education.

Political Science Major: Pre-Law Concentration • The pre-law concentration prepares political science majors for law school by providing a foundation for future study in commercial, criminal, environmental, family, labor, and tax law.

• Students selecting the pre-law concentration take the same number of credits as other political science majors, but the structure of those credits allows for at least four of the seven specialized courses (12 credits) to focus on the U.S. legal system, law and courts in relation to other aspects of the U.S. political system, international law and courts, and the international political system. umassd.edu/programs/pre-law

Pre-Law Advising • Students from any major can apply to law school, so the pre-law advising program is open to any student interested in law school or a legal career. The advising track does not have specific required coursework, as in the case of the pre-law concentration and legal studies minor.

• The program’s advisors recommend coursework in your major that teach and develop reading, writing, and analytical skills to prepare you for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and a law school curriculum.

Popular majors for students in this program include:

• Crime and Justice Studies • English • History • Philosophy

Legal Studies Minor • The legal studies minor, open to all majors, explores the role of law from an interdisciplinary perspective and is designed for students who are interested in learning about law, the various facets of the legal system, the role of law in society, and how law shapes and is shaped by historical, political, economic, and social forces.

• To earn the legal studies minor, students must complete one required (3 credits) and four elective courses (12 credits). umassd.edu/programs/legal-studies
