Mission Statement Engineering Student Support & Services (ES3) strives to serve the needs of students by empowering them to navigate academic challenges; achieve success through the development of educational plans consistent with their academic, personal, and professional goals; and enhance their academics through experiential learning opportunities. We believe that academic advising is a collaboration among the student, the faculty advisor, and the professional advisors of ES3. As professional advisors we strive to provide the dissemination of timely and accurate information to both students and faculty.

Advising Goals • Create a college culture that supports students in academic and career exploration. •C reate an environment that is welcoming of all students and provides encouragement and support as students face academic and personal challenges. • A ssist students in setting short-term and long-term educational, career, and personal goals. • Make students aware of university resources to support their academic success. •M ake students aware of university policies and procedures, and provide timely and accurate information about policies and procedures. • Empower students to take control of their education and become advocates for their own success.

Through academic advising students will: • Develop an understanding of major curriculum and graduation requirements. •K now how to use COIN to access and check academic progress, financial information, and general information. • L earn about enrichment opportunities available to students in the college such as study abroad, internship and career development, and professional organizations. •B e open to change and new experiences to fully take advantage of educational opportunities and experiences. • Be flexible and able to make informed decisions about academic plans and goals.

Advisee Responsibilities • Schedule at least one meeting per semester with your advisor prior to the assigned registration date. • P repare for the advising meeting by reviewing the curriculum guide and advisement report, and creating a list of questions for the advisor prior to the advising appointment. •C ome prepared for the advising meeting by bringing the flow chart or curriculum guide, advisement report, questions, and a notebook and pen/pencil to take notes. • Inform your advisor if you have any special needs or require any learning accommodations. •U nderstand, and share with your advisor, any enrollment requirements needed for your financial aid, scholarship, athletic participation, employment, or international status. • I nform your advisor of any intention to drop/withdraw from a course, or any plans to complete a course during winter or summer session. • Seek clarification if you are unclear on the terminology used or recommendations made by your advisor.

Academic Resources STEM Learning Lab SENG 217 | umassd.edu/arc | 508-999-8718 The STEM Learning Lab offers free peer tutoring throughout the school year, in Math, Science, and Engineering courses and is provided in a one-on-one and small group format. Multiliteracy & Communication Center (MCC) LARTS 221| umassd.edu/multiliteracy-communication-center The MCC offers free tutoring to assist students with a variety of communications assignments including papers, presentations, and multimodal projects. Tutoring is offered in both a face-to-face setting and online. Center for Access and Success (CAS) Pine Dale Hall 7136 | www.umassd.edu/dss | 508-999-8711 Works with students with documented disabilities to ensure mandates expressed in the Americans with Disabilities Act are upheld. If you had an IEP or 504 Plan in high school and are looking to receive academic accommodations or support, come to the Center. Counseling Center Auditorium Annex — umassd.edu/counseling | 508-999-8648 The Counseling Center provides a range of services to help students develop improved coping skills to address emotional, interpersonal and academic concerns. They offer primarily short-term counseling and will help students initiate referrals to community-based services when students need specialized or longer-term services. Services are provided by licensed psychologists, licensed mental health counselors and advanced unlicensed doctoral trainees under close supervision of our licensed staff. Services include individual counseling, group counseling, and workshops. Registrar Foster Administration 115 — umassd.edu/registrar | 508-999-8615 | registrar@umassd.edu The Registrar’s office maintains student academic records, provides transfer and AP credit articulation, processes applications for graduation, and provides official university transcripts.

Financial Resources University Enrollment Center (UEC) Foster Administration Building, first floor | umassd.edu/uec | 508.999.8857 | uec@umassd.edu The UEC is a “one-stop shop” environment where you can handle many of your student transactions: verification of enrollment letters (health, dental insurance, and scholarships); request official and unofficial transcripts; tuition payments, payments can be made via self-service COIN, by mail, or in person; assistance with student financial account information; and assistance with payment plans. Financial Aid Services (FAS) Foster Administration Building 105 | umassd.edu/financialaid | 508-999-8643 | financialaid@umassd.edu | Financial Aid Services assists students with creating a financing strategy for their education. Aid is available in the form of grants, scholarships, tuition credit, loans, and/or part-time employment to help defray educational expenses. They support students by ensuring they understand all options and responsibilities to maximize their aid eligibility. These functions include billing and collection of student accounts, administering external monthly payment plans, submitting eligible students for health insurance coverage, generation of student refund checks and processing of Perkins and Nursing related student loans.

Academic Checklist Each semester before classes begin you should: Log into COIN to review: • F inancial Aid award and bill • “To Do” list • Class schedule (for changes to rooms, etc.) • T extbook requirements Access and regularly check UMassD e-mail. Review the Academic Calendar at umassd.edu/academiccalendar. Sign up for UMassD myAlert at umassd.edu/myalert/.

Year 1: Transition and adjustment to the university Review curriculum requirements for your major. Review the undergraduate catalog academic policies information. Work with your advisor to create academic and career goals. Begin to build your academic network—tutoring, study groups, faculty office hours, and advising. Begin networking with faculty in your major. Begin working with the Career Center to update your resume and create a Handshake account. E xplore resources to further your academic and career goals such as minors, concentrations, study abroad, undergraduate research, and internships. Engage with student organizations and participate in campus activities.

Year 2: Academic exploration and personal development Begin to focus your interests and conduct a more in-depth exploration. Continue networking with faculty in your major. Begin exploring internship and research opportunities. Continue working with your advisor to update and adjust academic and career goals. Continue building your academic network.

Year 3: Academic enhancement and career goal setting Begin to explore career or graduate school options. etwork with professionals in your area of interest—can be done by attending career panels or networking N events, through outreach to professionals, or through internship opportunities. Begin planning technical electives with your advisor. Begin connecting with faculty about letters of recommendation for graduate school or job applications. Work with your advisor to complete the graduation plan for upcoming year(s).

Year 4+: Transitioning out of college into career or graduate school Research employment opportunities and begin applying. Create an elevator pitch. Make use of networking opportunities offered through the Career Center and the College of Engineering. Attend the fall and spring Job Fairs. Practice interviewing skills with the Career Center. Begin making a post-graduation financial plan—loan exit counseling, student loan payment/consolidation, etc. Work with your advisor to ensure all graduation requirements have been met. Apply for graduation!
