Graduate Academics UMass Dartmouth is a vibrant, public research university dedicated to engaged learning and innovative research resulting in personal and lifelong student success. The university is a Carnegie Doctoral Research University (R2), which means that it is a research-high institution. UMassD graduate students develop the critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills that are essential in any job, anywhere around the world. Experiential learning opportunities are the foundation. Team projects: Student groups often work on projects with real-world applications. Graduate research with faculty: UMassD faculty are funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Council for the Arts, to name a few. Students work side by side with faculty and present at national and international conferences. Facilities Center for Scientific Computing and Visualization Research: This interdisciplinary, on-campus supercomputing facility is where faculty and students collaborate on research in science, engineering, big data, business, and mathematical modeling. IDEA Studio: Students and faculty from various disciplines collaborate in a digital/multimedia space featuring CAD programs, a 3D scanner, a 3D printer, a laser engraver, and a full-length green screen wall for motion capture animation. Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship: The UMass Dartmouth business incubator and research laboratories offer students educational and experiential opportunities with UMassD faculty members and start-up companies. Multiliteracy & Communication Center: All UMassD students can access this free tutoring service to help with communications assignments.

Location Matters UMass Dartmouth is located in a vibrant, coastal community, and the campus is 21 kilometers from the beach, 48 kilometers from Providence, RI, and 97 kilometers from Boston. There is daily bus transportation to Boston directly from campus. Boston’s international airport is accessible by public transportation. Housing On campus: Suites, townhouses, or apartments with full kitchens are available for the duration of your UMassD studies. Our on-campus room fees include wireless internet, cable TV access, and free on-site laundry facilities. Landlines are available for students who wish to have that service. You can maintain on-campus housing during vacation periods by making arrangements when you register for on-campus housing. Off campus: Rental properties and apartments are available nearby, as well as in New Bedford and Fall River. There is public bus service to campus, and a free shuttle runs throughout the day and weekend during the academic year to the College of Visual & Performing Arts’ studio facilities in New Bedford.

Safety There is one entry/exit for the campus and a permanent, full-time Department of Public Safety that supports students, faculty, and staff 24 / 7. Dining On campus: There are 12 places to eat on campus, and some locations are open early and late for your convenience. Healthy dining and vegetarian options are always part of the menu. There are a number of meal plans that can be selected. Off campus: Restaurant options from fast food to sushi are within 3 kilometers of campus. Transportation Free shuttle services: There is transportation around campus, to the retail stores, restaurants and entertainment, and the Star Store arts campus in downtown New Bedford. Daily round-trip bus service from campus to Boston. Rental cars: The cars are on campus, and you can rent by the hour or the day. International airports: Logan International Airport provides flights to most major destinations in the world.

How to Apply STEP 1: Complete and submit your application. umassd.edu/graduate/apply STEP 2: Submit an essay or personal statement of up to 300 words on why you chose to study at a graduate level. STEP 3: Submit your most recent résumé. STEP 4: Submit the required number of recommendation letters for your program. STEP 5: Submit sealed official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended (regardless if the credential is earned or not). Documents issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by literal English translations. For all post-secondary education outside of the United States, an official course-by-course evaluation is required. STEP 6: Submit an official GRE/GMAT report directly from the testing center, if required for your program. School code: 3786

Assistantships Assistantships are competitive and based on student’s abilities and academic record. Recommendations for assistantship are initiated by the department and, once they are approved, the Office of Graduate Studies communicates with students about the assistantship award. You may contact the academic department to get more information about the criteria used and the timing of applications and award decisions. Doctoral Fellowships Distinguished Doctoral Fellows receive an annual stipend of $24,000 and full tuition credit for up to four years. Doctoral Fellows receive an annual stipend of $18,000 and full tuition credit for one year. All students admitted to our doctoral programs are eligible for nomination to receive these fellowships.
