y the time this magazine lands in the mailboxes of 40,000 alumni and friends of the University, there will be moving boxes filled with the artifacts and memories of 13 years serving as your Chancellor. It has been such an honor and privilege to lead this great institution to its next level of growth and development, and to get to know the wonderful creativity and ingenuity of the faculty, staff and students who in every way have truly been the wind beneath my wings. My life has certainly been an example of the great power of education to transform a life. When I graduated from Cardinal Cushing High School in Boston, my parents— one a World War II veteran and auto worker, the other a waitress and devoted homemaker—were determined that I would go to college. I was the first in my family to go to college—but certainly not the last—as we all learned to imagine new possibilities and to work hard to make them happen. I am so grateful to my parents for showing me what I could do, how I could serve, and what it means to truly make a difference for others. I believe that I have had the chance to pass that lesson on for over 30 years at UMass, ensuring that there is equal opportunity for that transformative power to be shared with others no matter their gender, race, or socio-economic status. As we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Morrill Act, which established public higher education, we must work to continue the mission of ensuring that there is always access to quality, affordable, excellent public higher education. It does make a difference! When people ask me about what I think my legacy at UMass Dartmouth is, I can answer easily. It is not programs started, buildings built, enrollment grown, or money raised—though all those things matter. It is vibrant partnerships created with all those who believe that the future is created by knowledgeable, innovative, diverse people empowered by their education to dream impossible dreams and make them happen. I have been blessed to experience wonderful partnerships within the campus community, with business leaders, elected officials, non-profit groups, K-12 educators, entrepreneurs, donors, and ordinary citizens to provide depth and dimension to all the goals we sought to accomplish. The lesson to be learned is that it does not matter where you start from, but what you aspire to, where you go and who you go with. So, as I pack up to move out of my office and hand the baton of leadership to Dr. Divina Grossman, an immigrant daughter of teachers who shares my passion for civic engagement and the transformative impact of education, I know that the future of UMass Dartmouth is bright and exciting. When I pause to look out the window of my office, I see the Claire T. Carney Library renovation entering its final stages. By fall, this center of learning and discovery will reopen with re-engineered learning spaces and technology, allowing students and their mentors to discuss, debate, and innovate in new ways. It will be a beacon of the idea that much of the most important teaching takes place outside of the classroom, among peers. Looking toward the Dell Pond, I can see our new wind turbine, a dramatic symbol (From the Chancellor continued on page 7)

According to the study, while 8% of participants experience rapid decline, 27% experience moderate decline—and a comfortable majority were just fine.

While some seniors do experience rapid or severe cases of cognitive decline, most do not— a sign of hope for all of us as we age.

Aiza’s “life-changing” decision In spite of family hardship and the disruption of changing high schools three times in four years, Aiza Soares excelled in science and graduated from Somerset High School in 2008. SIFE All-Stars excel in NYC This April, the UMass Dartmouth Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team won the Northeast Regional Championship and took “All-Stars” honors at the SIFE Regional Competition held in New York City, beating 95 other institutions. SIFE, an international organization that “brings together the top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better, more sustainable world through

The UMass Dartmouth SIFE team impressed a panel of judges consisting of business executives from leading American companies, beat out stiff competition, and was one of the 180 teams out of 580 qualified to move ahead to the National Exposition held in

Kansas City in May of this year. While they did not become the national championship team, the UMass Dartmouth team has an impressive history of wins: After winning the Rookie of the Year award in 2004, the club won the first runner-up awards in subsequent years, and in 2009 and 2010 it won the New England Regional Championship and the Northeast Regional Championship, respectively.

Honoring Outstanding Women In recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8, the Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality recognized four women who have made significant contributions that enhance opportunities for achievement for women, and promote a supportive climate on campus. These Outstanding Women Award recipients were Dr. Katja Hölttä-Otto, Professor of Engineering, for her work to guide the next generation of women scientists and engineers; Melissa Seif, a biology major, for her leadership in contributing to student life; Chancellor MacCormack, in special recognition of her years of leadership and service to UMass Dartmouth as the University’s first female chancellor; and Louise Goodrum, our Associate Athletic Director who passed away suddenly last December (see tribute on page 39).

Around the Campanile Partnering with Zipcar to offer car sharing on campus In February, due to popular demand by students, UMass Dartmouth launched a new partnership with Zipcar, the world’s leading car-sharing network, to add a costeffective and environmentally-friendly alternative to owning a car on campus. This year, UMass Dartmouth students, staff, and faculty could join Zipcar for $25, with rates on campus Zipcar vehicles starting as low as $7 per hour. Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots, up to 180 miles of driving per day and roadside assistance are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days. Michael Serafino, General Manager of Zipcar University, said, “Since every Zipcar takes approximately 15 privately owned vehicles off the road, Zipcar can also help the campus reduce its overall carbon footprint.”

Governor Patrick breaks ground on “the MAB” Governor Deval Patrick joined UMass Board of Trustees Chairman James Karam ’71, President Robert L. Caret, Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack, Chancellor-elect Divina Grossman, and other local and state leaders on May 16 to break ground on the Massachusetts Accelerator for Biomanufacturing (MAB) in Fall RIver.

On completion next fall, the MAB will be the only place in the country where startups will be able to test their biomanufacturing methods and bioproducts at every stage of development. The MAB is designed to serve researchers and entrepreneurs as they develop products and methods that will reshape the fields of biotherapeutics, biomedicine and green chemistry. Here, industry pioneers will grow antibodies to fight disease, generate new tissue from stem cells, create a new generation of biofuels, and more. (photo below)

The search for Flight 447 In September of 2009, a meeting was convened at the request of a French delegation. The bottom line? “Help us find our plane.” By Frank Smith

he airplane in question was Air France Flight 447, out of Rio de Janeiro bound for Paris. During the early hours of June 1, 2009, the aircraft had issued a final automatic radio signal at 2:10 am and then gone silent over the tropical Atlantic. Its location at the time of that final transmission was hundreds of miles off the Brazil coast. Ships were dispatched to the location and, within days of the aircraft’s disappearance, began to recover bodies of passengers distributed over a wide area. One of the scientists invited to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) meeting was Richard Limeburner. Limeburner

had been successful in the past locating aircraft and ships lost at sea by backtracking the paths of floating debris to the time of loss. In one notable example, he helped locate the wreck of the steamship Portland in Massachusetts Bay based on records of where debris had washed up on the shore of Cape Cod a century earlier. After the September 2009 meeting, Limeburner discussed the Air France problem with colleagues Changsheng Chen of UMass Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) and Robert Beardsley of WHOI. Chen and Beardsley were leading an SMAST-WHOI team that was developing an ocean computer model called FVCOM, which Chen had originated a decade earlier. They agreed that Limeburner and the FVCOM group would model the paths of the AF447 debris floating on the sea surface to predict the location of the airplane on the sea floor. Chen started to develop FVCOM — for Finite Volume Community Ocean Model— in 1999 while at the University of Georgia. On moving to SMAST in 2001, he quickly assembled his own research group. This greatly accelerated the further development and adaptation of FVCOM to a growing slate of scientific and practical applications. The site of the Flight 447 tragedy was a long way from UMass Dartmouth, but the FVCOM group already had a functioning global version of the model in place. How that global model came to be is a story in itself. In its original incarnation, FVCOM stood for Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model, and Chen’s group focused on applying it to problems in the Gulf of Maine. But their efforts were constrained by boundary issues. Whatever domain researchers focus on, it is inevitably influenced by forces outside that domain. So they compromise and draw an artificial boundary and feed the model with estimates of those external forces along the boundary. One of FVCOM’s great advantages, however, is its so-called ”unstructured grid.” Unlike the traditional structured (i.e., checkerboard) grid, FVCOM maps an area of interest with a mesh of triangles; the triangles can be varied in size, allowing modelers to seamlessly vary the resolution as needed over the extent of the domain. Thus FVCOM can simultaneously simulate small-scale phenomena along intricate coastlines and larger-scale processes in the open ocean. Chen and Beardsley decided that in order to improve the accuracy of the Gulf of Maine model, they would have to model the entire Arctic Ocean. Intermittent incursions of Arctic water are major influences on the northwest Atlantic, including the Gulf of Maine, and are just too important to ignore. But having applied FVCOM to the Arctic Ocean, the researchers faced the same problem, just on a bigger scale: the direction of flow in the Arctic Ocean, and hence the said incursions, depend on external forces. The researchers finally threw up their hands and undertook the perhaps inevitable project: they applied FVCOM to the entire global ocean. As Chen put it, “To improve our Gulf of Maine model, we modeled the Arctic Ocean; and to improve our Arctic Ocean model, we modeled the world.” Chen’s team was just one of several modeling groups chosen to participate in the search for Flight 447, and the various models produced differing predictions of the plane’s location. Search leaders had to somehow merge the results from all the models in order to decide where to look first. Unfortunately, there is no sound, objective method for executing such a merger. Three search expeditions were mounted over the space of ten months, the last in March of 2010, and all three came up empty. Airbus did not give up. The aircraft manufacturer had the most at stake since failure to find the aircraft—and the flight data and cockpit voice recorders—would leave lingering questions about their planes. As Beardsley put it, “When you lose a plane like that for unknown reasons, you’ve just got to find it.” Shortly after the third failed search, an Airbus representative visited Chen’s lab at SMAST. The company had been impressed with the work the FVCOM group and now wanted it to be the sole modeling group involved. The timing was fortuitous. Less than a year had passed since

2011 Shortly after the Japan earthquakes and tsunami, a Japanese colleague started providing Chen with detailed data from the area where the tsunami hit, and the SMAST group began to model the lead-up and aftermath to the natural disaster. One of Chen’s initial findings was that the construction of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant had withstood the onrush of the tsunami; it appeared, in fact, that it was actually the retreat of the waters that had damaged the plant. Beardsley and Chen are part of a team that has now been funded with a quick-response grant from the National Science Foundation to reconstruct the water movements and radionuclide dispersal over the first 30 days following the tsunami. This information could be invaluable to reconstruction efforts in Japan and fortification of other seacoast structures around the world.

The UMass Dartmouth-WHOI modeling team has produced models to predict the impact of storm inundation on New England coastal communities. These models have been validated in Scituate, Massachusetts, and Saco, Maine, for selected extratropical storms (Nor’easters) of 2005, 2007 and 2010. The team has recently been funded by MIT Sea Grant to extend the model domain to cover the entire Massachusetts coast and establish an inundation forecast model system for the state.

2007 The New Bedford fishing boat Lady of Grace was lost with all hands in Nantucket Sound due to a buildup of ice that left the vessel top-heavy, leading it to capsize. The tragedy inspired Chen and company to develop the FVCOM-based Northeast Coastal Ocean Forecast System, now in use by the National Weather Service in Taunton to predict surface icing and other fields as part of standard marine forecast operations.

the disappearance of Flight 447. The group still had time to test FVCOM against real-world data in the vicinity of the crash site and at the same time of year. A group of satellite-tracked drifters were released in the crash area in June 2010, as close as possible to the wind and current regime that occurred immediately following the crash in 2009. The better the model could be finetuned to match the paths of the drifters, the more accurately it could track the path from the bodies recovered the previous year to the crash site. The refinements to the model were completed, and FVCOM made its predictions. In March of 2011, a fourth search was launched, led by a WHOI team armed with FVCOM’s predictions. On April 3, the news was announced: Air France Flight 447 had been found, and in the area predicted by FVCOM.

The discovery of 447’s resting place and the subsequent recovery of the “black boxes” are expected to save lives. On December 6, 2011, PopularMechanics.com published a recreation of the last moments of Air France Flight 447 as revealed by the data and voice recorders. “The remarkable recovery of AF447’s black boxes,” PM reported, showed that “…neither weather nor malfunction doomed AF447, nor a complex chain of error, but a simple but persistent mistake on the part of one of the pilots.” “Today the Air France 447 transcripts yield information that may ensure that no airline pilot will ever make the same mistakes.”

Each application of FVCOM provides new opportunities for students. Chen’s lab leads SMAST in the awarding of PhDs, and each graduate enriches the model by leaving behind a new application, addition or improvement to the model.

A deeply rooted belief in young people

ast year, UMass Dartmouth students contributed 179,000 hours of service to the SouthCoast. From homeless shelters to law offices, they contributed $4.8 million in value to the region, according to Independent Sector, a national network of charitable organizations. UMass Dartmouth alumnus Robert Leduc ’78 mentioned that commitment to service this May when he spoke at the dedication of the Robert and Jeanne Leduc Center for Civic Engagement. Speaking before a crowd of hundreds, including Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, Chancellor MacCormack, and Board of Trustees Chairman James Karam ’71, Leduc explained the motive behind his gift to the Center: “It’s a point of pride and an expression of our belief in investing in the people and places that have been a part of my life, and the UMass

lives of my wife and children,” he said. Jeanne Leduc added, “We’re happy to do it, because our philosophy is we’ve been very blessed, very successful in our lives and to those who much has been given much is expected.” Robert and Jeanne Leduc, both Fall River natives, are examples of the work ethic and commitment to the community that UMass Dartmouth seeks to instill in every student. Robert earned his degree in mechanical engineering, has risen through the ranks of United Technologies Corporation and is President of Hamilton Sundstrand, a market leader in the design, manufacture and service of military, commercial and business aircraft systems. In addition to sitting on the board of Hamilton Sundstrand Space Systems International, he is also a Trustee of the UMass Dartmouth Foundation.

Feature story Jeanne’s commitment to service is lifelong, from her professional commitment as an emergency room nurse for 20 years, to her volunteer activities in soup kitchens and her role as a founding member of the Board of Directors and supporter of the African Teacher’s Foundation of Westport. At the ceremony, Chancellor MacCormack said, “What shines through about Bob and Jeanne is a deeply rooted belief in young people, and a belief that meaningful civic engagement is both an obligation of this young generation and an opportunity. Staying true to that commitment, from this day forward, begins right here at the Robert and Jeanne Leduc Center for Civic Engagement.” This year, UMass Dartmouth was named one of the nation’s top 14 colleges and universities — and only honoree in Massachusetts — on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which recognizes exceptional commitment to service and civic engagement.

UMass Dartmouth: Top 1% of colleges nationwide for service In March, UMass Dartmouth was recognized as one of the nation’s elite universities — and the only in Massachusetts — for its support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the US Department of Education. As one of 14 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Finalists, UMass Dartmouth ranked in the top 1% of the nation’s 4500 colleges and universities. Even more impressive is the speed and scale of the achievement: since the Center for Civic Engagement was opened in 2008 under the leadership of Dr. Matthew H. Roy, the number of UMass Dartmouth students, staff and faculty taking part in service-learning has skyrocketed by nearly 500%. Last year, nearly 66% of graduating seniors gave back to the community through service —up from just 27% two years before.

UMass Law earns American Bar Association approval and hires a new dean

City University of New York Associate Dean and Law Professor Mary Lu Bilek has been appointed Dean of UMass Law.

he UMass School of Law–Dartmouth reached a major milestone in June when the American Bar Association granted it provisional national accreditation, allowing future graduates of the school to sit for the bar exam in any state. The decision, following an eight-year effort to create the Commonwealth’s first public law school, brought praise from many sources. “Today is a great day for UMass, the SouthCoast region and for our Commonwealth as a whole,” said Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. “The accreditation of UMass Law marks a milestone in our efforts to expand access to high-quality and affordable education.” “ABA accreditation is the gold seal of approval for law schools, and I am so proud of our students, faculty and staff for establishing a legal education program that meets the ABA’s high standards,” said UMass

Dartmouth Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack. “This is a major milestone for UMass Law, UMass Dartmouth, and the entire UMass system,” said University of Massachusetts President Robert L. Caret. “UMass Law is well on its way to becoming another jewel in the crown of our world class university.” The accreditation announcement came just days after City University of New York Associate Dean and Law Professor Mary Lu Bilek was named Dean of UMass Law. “The progress that the UMass School of Law has made in such a short time is truly remarkable,’’ said Professor Bilek, who played a role in CUNY Law receiving full ABA accreditation. Professor Bilek is known by her peers and colleagues for supporting student-centered instruction, promoting the social justice mission of the law school, and insisting on the access to legal education necessary to create a diverse profession.

Ways to Give Cash Many of the gifts received by the UMass Dartmouth Foundation are in the form of cash—usually by check. Increasingly, some alumni and friends have chosen to make their gifts to the Annual Fund using a major credit card. This allows the donor to take advantage of any benefits awarded by the credit card company such as frequent flyer miles, bonus points, etc. Both types of gifts are simple to make and are immediately available for use by the university. Securities Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds and mutual funds offer distinct advantages to the donor while benefiting the UMass Dartmouth Foundation. Scott Wells ’91— Character builder

cott Wells BFA ’91 is a Character Artist at Treyarch, an Activision Studio in Santa Monica, California. Last November, Treyarch released “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” the best-selling video game in history. Scott and his team were responsible for creating all of the characters that appear in the video game that required digital sculpture, modeling and texture. Prior to Treyarch, Scott was a character/creature modeler at the visual effects studio Rhythm and Hues where he created digital animals, creatures and humans for feature films. We asked Scott if he would answer a few questions and provide insight into his film/video game experiences.

You’ve been involved in a wide variety of artistic projects ranging from television animation and feature film character artist design to sculpture and video game work. It’s a fascinating journey, but we’re curious: 10 or 15 years ago, did you imagine that this would be your career path?

I’ve always been interested in working in the entertainment field, but my career goals and how I planned to achieve them were different from how things unfolded. In short, two things happened around 2002 that altered my career path: the dot-com crash and meeting my future wife, Patricia. The former got me out of a rather unfulfilling Creative Director position when the company I was working for folded in the spring of 2002. While initially this seemed like a bad thing, in retrospect it freed me up to try something different. I met Pat soon after and she quickly became my best friend and partner in crime. She is a person who is more about doing things than talking about them, so we were off to Georgia where she was hired as Chair of the Animation department at The Savannah College of Art & Design. I enrolled in the MFA program there, and it was the incubation time I really needed to get back to basics, refine my skills and explore some new directions. In fall of 2005, Disney offered my wife a job as Manager of Artistic

Development. We had talked about moving to Los Angeles when I finished up my master’s, but this was the catalyst that got us out here. A few months after arriving, I landed the job at Rhythm & Hues working on Night at the Museum as a digital character/creature modeler. I stayed on at R&H for several other projects and ultimately moved on to Treyarch the following year. My sculpture is purely personal, although it has allowed me to develop some of the skills that serve as the foundation for the new phase of my career. For the most part, I need to be away from the computer when I’m at home, so I like traditional sculpting because it is something real and very relaxing. You’ve worked on some interesting films: The Golden Compass, Night at the Museum, Evan Almighty, to name a few. Did you ever have the occasion to interact with the actors or director, or was your involvement mostly spent working long days in front of a computer?

Alumni profile I’ve met a few people but not necessarily names people would recognize outside the film industry. Unfortunately, most of my time was spent in front of a workstation interacting with coworkers and VXF (visual special effects) supervisors. Oddly, I’ve had more interactions with celebrities since I started working in the video game industry— a lot of pro athletes, actors and celebrities take tours of Treyarch. Overall, my brushes with celebrities have more to do with attending film openings and parties for my wife’s work. You eventually switched over from films to video games. What precipitated the shift and what are the major differences? The decision was really a pragmatic one. We were building our house in 2007-08 and there are certain financial realities that go along with that. The film work I was doing was contract-based and although it was going well, I was always concerned about future paychecks. My original goal when we moved to L.A. was to work in film and since I accomplished that, it made switching over to games a little easier. Initially, I accepted the Treyarch job to work on the James Bond “Quantum of Solace” game with the idea that the project would last two years and that I’d transition back to film after the project ended. Ultimately, I realized the video game work was very similar to film plus I had a wider, more interesting range of responsibilities as a game artist. Transitioning onto the “Call of Duty” team after Bond made a lot of sense given the state of the economy and the track record of the franchise. Now that I’m working on my third title I’ve found that I really enjoy the work and plan on staying in games for the foreseeable future. “Call of Duty: Black Ops” is the most successful video game in history (raking in $650 million in five days and $1 billion in a little more than a month). Did you expect it to be this successful, and how has your involvement affected your career?

Advice? “Just keep chipping away at your goals.. Opportunities will come from unexpected places and it’s all about being prepared to take advantage of them.” Early on, I had no idea. The franchise had a pretty good track record, so I assumed it could do well. “Modern Warfare” was another version of the “Call of Duty” games and it was the big boy on the block, so I just hoped “Black Ops” could approach some portion of their success. I started to get some idea that it would be pretty slick after our first big press demo in the spring. The pre-orders that resulted from the press buzz were very good over the summer, so that was a positive. Still, I don’t think anyone expected the type of sales we experienced. It’s been pretty gratifying to be involved in something this big. Everyone seems to play “Black Ops” or have people in there family who do, so when my job comes up in casual conversation I usually get a pretty cool reaction. It’s also allowed me the opportunity to return the favor to my wife by supporting us while she earns her doctorate in Education at the University of Southern California. Los Angeles certainly has its advantages but also its drawbacks, for example: living among millions of Lakers fans. What is the greatest benefit to you about living in southern California? And the drawbacks? I lived in New England for the first 33 years of my life and it’s where my family

and best friends are, so it will always be special. Having said that, L.A. is really a great place to live. The weather is awesome and you’ve got the oceans, mountains, and a variety of interesting little areas in the city. It’s such a big place that no matter what your interests, you can find it here. A lot of the entertainment industry is here, so that’s great for me. We built our house up in the mountains of the Angeles National Forest, so I live in a really cool quiet private neighborhood on top of a mountain and I work near the beach in Santa Monica. Can’t beat that! Of course, the two big drawbacks are cost of living and traffic, but that hasn’t come close to overshadowing the benefits so far. Lakers and Raiders fans are an annoyance too, but what can you do? They come with the package. Any career advice that you can share with alumni? Just keep chipping away at your goals or pursue what ever lights you up inside. Opportunities will come from unexpected places and it’s all about being prepared to take advantage of them. Also, keep buying video games. Buy lots of them!

Marsden ’54, chemistry dyeing, Orleans, who is a proud graduate of one of our predecessor institutions, Bradford Durfee College of Technology, writes about how the education he received gave him a rewarding career covering 46 years and four companies, allowing him to travel internationally and to just about every state in the USA. He is enjoying retirement with his wife, Dale, on Cape Cod.

SUNY Oswego, where he is a Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus. Silveira also collaborated on research projects for 23 years with Dr. Ei-ichi Negishi (in photo with Silveira) who was recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He and his wife, Beverly, have spent time traveling and continue to enjoy square dancing, tai chi, biking and interacting with their four grandchildren.

Edward owns Cederholm Electrical, an electrical contracting firm with his son, Christian. The company specializes in commercial service contracts on residential and commercial projects throughout Boston and the South Shore.

Thomas Brian Donnelly ’76, biology, MA ’90, Chagzhou, China, formerly Mattapoisett, is teaching in the Ameson International High School Program in China. The retired teacher from the New Bedford High School science department is enjoying life in China.

Patrick J. McNamara ’77, marketing, MBA ’82, Marston’s Mills, works as a Quality Control Specialist at the Air Force Station in Cape Cod. He retired from the military at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He served as Detachment Commander, Director of Personnel, and a

variety of leadership positions within an Air Force Combat Communications Group headquarters. He was also a pilot trainee and aircraft maintenance officer on a variety of aircraft. McNamara has earned prestigious military honors; he received the American Red Cross Hero Award in 2005 and the Massachusetts Medal of Merit in 2011. He has worked as a private pilot for over 30 years. Steven C. Sharek ’77, English, JD, ’96, Dartmouth, was appointed the superintendent-director at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Fitchburg. He retired as the Fairhaven Chief of Police in 2009 and is a former Bristol County Assistant District Attorney. When not posted internationally by the UN he maintains a home in Fairhaven with his wife, Kathleen. James S. Griffin ’79, mechanical engineering, Little Compton, RI, won the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) Bronze Medal for 2011 which is an annual award that recognizes outstanding individual achievements in science or engineering in the field of undersea warfare. Griffin, works at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport as the head of the Autonomous and Defensive Systems Department. LuAnn Viera ’79, English, Dartmouth, has stayed in touch with her alma mater the last couple of years by working in the Center for Policy Analysis at UMass Dartmouth.

Joseph P. Barrett ’82, Spanish, Wayland, retired after almost 28 years as a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Barrett is now a Vice President in the Global Security & Investigations department of JP Morgan Chase. He lives with his wife, Elizabeth Miscia Barrett ’82, Spanish, and their three daughters in Wayland. Cathleen Carpenter Morey ’82, medical technology, Adams, earned her master of social work degree from Smith College in 2000. She works as a senior social worker, family therapist, and clinical supervisor at the Austen Riggs Center, a private psychiatric hospital in Stockbridge. She has published in the area of schizophrenia and family therapy, and has presented on the topics

of intergenerational family dynamics, suicidality, and schizophrenia, as well as enactment of family dynamics. Morey lives with her husband, Timothy Morey, a District Court clerk-magistrate. Her daughter, Kaylee is a senior at UMass Dartmouth majoring in political science. Her son, Nicholas, attends college and is studying criminal justice. Morey has been involved in child welfare advocacy, serving on the board of directors of the Berkshire Children and Families. She has also advocated for statewide system reform to aid children in need of permanent homes through education and legislative lobbying. Morey enjoys running, tennis, traveling, and gardening. Loretta Blake ’83, sociology, New Bedford, has been appointed to the Standard-Times editorial board as the SouthCoast community member to the board for the first half of 2012. Blake also serves as director of the SouthCoast Education Compact, a UMass Dartmouth program in the Center for University, School and Community Partnerships. Brian Helgeland ’83, English, HD ’05, Malibu, CA, is writing and directing the film 42 which is about Jackie Robinson. The film is slated to debut on April 12, 2013, in time for the 66th anniversary of “Jackie Robinson Day.” Harrison Ford has signed on to play Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey; and Chadwick Boseman will play Jackie Robinson. Jackie’s widow, Rachel, who will be played by Nicole Beharie, has also been an active consultant on the script. Mary Louise Nunes ’83, accounting, Dartmouth, was appointed to the Professional Ethics Executive Committee by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She serves as chair of the Town of Dartmouth Finance Committee, treasurer of the Community

Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, director and incoming treasurer of the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS), trustee of the Greater New Bedford Industrial Foundation, and member and former chair of the Advisory Board of the Department of Accounting & Finance at the University of Massachusetts’ Charlton College of Business. Linda Ryan ’89, management, Deland, FL, writes she was diagnosed with recurring cervical cancer at the age of 43. In an

effort to support her, friends organized a 5K run to raise funds in the fight against cancer. Ryan, who found a lump in her neck four weeks after running a marathon, believes there is good that can come out of a cancer diagnosis. She encourages people to live a healthy lifestyle so they are prepared in the event they encounter an unfortunate life event. Susan Arciero ’93, visual design/ illustration, Pinehurst, NC, illustrated the book and New York Times bestseller Sweet Land of Liberty authored by Callista Gingrich, the wife of republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. The book answers the question, “How did America become the land of the free?” Ellis the elephant sets off on a quest to find out the answer. Other books illustrated by Arciero include Nat, Nat the Nantucket Cat and Cornelius Vandermouse: the Pride of Newport. Arciero lives with her husband, three children and two basset hounds. George Costa ’99, mechanical engineering, Fall River, now owns Rennen Design Group, located in Middleboro, MA, which is a rider-owned BMX company that specializes in high-tech BMX parts and training tools. Costa’s background in robotics and mechanical engineering has led to some of the most advanced gears in BMX. While at UMass Dartmouth, he became interested and involved with robotics while working for Titleist, the golf ball and golf accessory manufacturer located in Fairhaven. In Memoriam UMass Dartmouth Remembers… Louise Goodrum, strong voice for female athletes During her 13 years of service at UMass Dartmouth, Louise Goodrum mentored countless female athletes and numerous female staff members. Louise safeguarded access and equity for female athletes by ensuring compliance with federal Title IX regulations, and expanded opportunities for female athletes through the expansion of the Athletics Department. UMass Dartmouth’s varsity sports program now includes 14 sports for women, along with 12 for men. Her brothers, Dr. Philip Goodrum and Ralph Goodrum, came from New York and Vermont respectively to accept the award in her memory. Louise is, and will be, missed by the UMass Dartmouth community.

SMU President Donald E. Walker 1921-2011 When Southeastern Massachusetts University was in crisis in the early 1970s, then-Chairman of the Board of Trustees David Greer knew he needed a leader who could “put our campus together again.” That leader was Don Walker. As President from 1972 to 1983, Walker, in the words of the New Bedford Standard-Times, “gave SMU and the region vision, leadership, and stability.” To that list, add courtesy, consensus and collegiality, the values that Don Walker lived by. “If you involve the people who have a stake in things when making a decision,” he said, “you’ll always get a better decision.” Don Walker literally wrote the book on how to lead a university. The Effective Administrator, which he wrote while SMU president, was for years the standard guide for university executives.

The proof is in the numbers. Under his leadership, full-time enrollment and faculty rose by 33% and the budget tripled to $21 million. A Missouri native, Don Walker was the son and grandson of college professors. He attended the University of Southern California, and earned his Ph.D. in sociology at Stanford in 1954—the same year he stepped into university administration as dean of students at then-San Diego State College. He also served as the nation’s youngest university president at Idaho State and in other roles at Sonoma State College and UC Irvine. Don Walker died in Los Angeles and is survived by two grandchildren.

Phil Lavoie ’97, (third from left) marketing & business information systems, Indianapolis, IN, was elected to serve as the Vice President of the Broad Ripple Village Association. Phil moved to Indianapolis in order to ’retire’ his software sales career but quickly became involved with the start up technology scene. In December he travelled with nine other tech gurus to launch uFlavor, the world’s first user generated beverage company. They toured on a large 65-foot motor coach visiting many of the west coast’s startup cities. Some of the highlights included Phil doing the worm with M.C. Joan Stratton ’06, sociology, Mattapoisett, was named by the Standard-Times editorial board as a new member from the SouthCoast community to the board for the first half of 2012. Stratton works as a licensed social worker providing individual and group outpatient therapy at High Point Treatment Center in New Bedford. David Yoken, MBA ’06, New Bedford, is the founder and president of Macuity which he started five years ago with the belief that Apple-focused IT services, combined with the highest-rate customer service possible, would provide unparalleled value for businesses. Prior to founding Macuity,

David worked as a political campaign professional, traveling the country on national and statewide political campaigns. Steven Martins ’07, political science, New Bedford, was elected New Bedford City Council President and named 2011 Top Young Professionals by New England Business Bulletin. Martins currently serves on the UMass Dartmouth Alumni Association Board of Directors. Lenora Benson ’09, sociology, Brockton, was crowned the winner of the 2011 Miss Black Massachusetts pageant on January 7, 2012. A late entrant to the pageant world, she signed up for her first competition after graduating and serving five years in the Army National Guard, where she is a first lieutenant platoon leader in the 125th Quartermaster Co. of Worcester. Through her military service, Benson has served in Haiti, helping to purify water for local residents and U.S. military members. She also served in two state-side missions, assisting when an MWRA pipe burst in Weston and preparing and placing sandbags during the intense spring flooding in 2010.

Boyer is pursuing her MBA. Vanessa Brooks ’09, marketing, Fitzwilliam, NH, a former child model, Brooks works as assistant to the president of Surell Accessories of Troy, NY. The company manufactures and imports fur, shearling and faux fur fashion accessories —hats, earmuffs, vests, headbands and the like— sold in major department stores across the country. Robert R. Dobias, ’09, liberal arts, Swampscott, received his Massachusetts Certified Arborist designation from the Massachusetts Arborist Association. Dobias is employed by Leahy Landscaping, Inc. in the Tree Division.

Matthews ’09, psychology, Dartmouth, has returned to Joint Base McGuireDix-Lakehurst, N.J., after being deployed to Afghanistan serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the US Army National Guard. First Lieutenant Matthews, a signal officer with the 26th Signal Company, has served for seven years.

Nicole Marie Pitts ’10, computer & information science, East Freetown, and William Edward Furlan II were married November 11, 2011. She earned her master’s

degree from Pennsylvania State University and works as a software engineer with General Dynamics. Kim Barry, MFA ’11, Mattapoisett, is teaching at UMass Dartmouth in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Valentina Brown ’11, music, Billerica, received her TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certification, taught from JulyDecember, raised over $1000 for a children’s home in Africa, and now is volunteering at the centre in Moshi, Tanzania for 6 months.
