FAL L 2013

welcome HONOR What a landmark year this has been at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

In the spring, students attended classes for the first time in the new state-of-the-art Isabelle Rutherford Meyer Nursing Education Center. This fall brought another record enrollment of 3,492 students, up 205 more than Fall 2012 and the 24th record enrollment in the last 30 years. Finally, on September 21, the Crusader Football team opened the first on-campus stadium in front of a sold-out crowd, defeating Division III rivals Wesley College 35-7. This remarkable year would not have been possible without the generosity of our alumni and friends. Whether you made it possible for a student to attend UMHB through scholarships, enhanced academic programs through a special gift, or contributed to funding one of the beautiful new facilities that has taken its place on campus as a result of Momentum: The Campaign for Mary Hardin-Baylor, your gifts continue to help make UMHB a place where students can experience the best in Christian higher education. As you read the four donor profiles on the following pages, it becomes clear that although each of us have different reasons for giving, the result is the same—supporting students. Our students are a worthy investment, and I want to personally thank you for making it possible for each of them to receive an education for life and the experience of a lifetime during their time at UMHB. We are so grateful for your continued support!

JAMES & KIM FIKES | E N D O W M E N T When Clarence E. Fikes opened his first Texaco service station in Cameron, Texas, in 1952, no one could have predicted how dramatically his business would grow over the next six decades. Today the CEFCO Convenience Stores brand, named after C. E. Fikes, boasts more than 250 stores spread across seven states. In 1976, C.E. Fikes founded Fikes Wholesale, Inc., a multi-branded petroleum products marketer that is now the holding company for CEFCO Convenience Stores, CORD Financial Services, JF Air Traffic, and Group Petroleum Service. C.E. Fikes’ son, James, assumed the role of president of Fikes Wholesale, Inc. following his father’s death in 1988, growing the company from four CEFCO stores to the 257 that they own today. When James and his wife, Kim, were looking to give back through scholarships that could benefit Fikes Wholesale employees and their families, the first place they thought of was Mary Hardin-Baylor. They established the C.E. Fikes (CEFCO) Endowed Scholarship in

memory of James’ father in 2006. “This was actually the first scholarship that we set up with any school,” James said. “We chose UMHB because it’s a wonderful institution with an impressive reputation for putting out successful graduates. With such a great university right in our backyard, we are always encouraging our employees to go to UMHB.” First preference for the scholarship goes to Fikes Wholesale, Inc. employees or their family members. Over the years, James and Kim have had the opportunity to get to know many of the scholarship recipients. “We have good relationships with the recipients,” Kim said. “We have had the privilege of meeting many of them, and they keep us posted on what is going on in their lives and careers. One is studying to be a nurse and sent me an email to tell me she just passed her NCLEX licensing exam. She thanked us for helping her get through nursing school. Examples like that make us so proud that we are able to play a small role in their education.” PHILANTHROPY | FALL 2013

BILL BARGE | M E M O R I A L

GIVING

Adaptable. Visionary. A leader through kindness. These are just a few of the superlatives Bill Barge uses when describing his late mother, Betty Ann Barge ’55, for whom he recently named the elevator tower in Crusader Stadium. “We had a close bond,” he said. “Mother was so kind and such a good mom that I just never wanted to disappoint her.” Betty Ann grew up in Belton as the only child of Martha and Elbert Potts, who were well-known around town as the owners of Potts Hardware. “Back in the Great Depression, the hardware store sold farms supplies and even buggies, so it was a big business,” Barge explained. “The Potts have been here since the founding of Bell County, when they traveled from Kentucky in covered wagons. So our family has a lot of history in this area, and Mom knew more about Bell County than almost anyone.” Betty Ann attended Mary Hardin-Baylor until her sophomore year, when WWII began. She married her high school sweetheart, Vernon Barge, shortly before he left for Germany to serve his country. Once Bill, the couple’s only child, began elementary school, Betty Ann reenrolled at Mary Hardin-Baylor to finish her degree and begin a teaching career. A few years later, the family bought a ranch in Belton and began raising one of the largest full-blood Charolais cattle herds in North America. “Mother had no inkling that she would be on a ranch or messing with cattle— that was my dad’s idea,” Bill remembers. “I’m not sure you can be considered a city girl living in Belton, but if so, that is how you could’ve described Mother. But she was adaptable whatever the circumstance.” Barge said his mother would be thrilled with UMHB’s growth and hopes his gift to the university forever preserves her memory. “I’ve always respected what Mary Hardin-Baylor stands for and how important it is to our community. As an alumna, Mary Hardin-Baylor always had a special place in Mother’s heart, so it seems fitting to honor her in this way.”

FRANK, MARILYN & BRETT TURNER | A L U M N I Just as attending UMHB was a family affair for the Turner family, giving back to their alma mater has also become a family undertaking. Marilyn Turner ’75 was the first to graduate from the university. She grew up a block away from campus, then enrolled in classes to earn her education degree. She married Frank Turner, a Baylor graduate who also grew up in Belton, during her first semester of college. Nearly three decades later, the Turners’ two sons followed in their mother’s footsteps. Brad graduated from UMHB in 2001, and Brett in 2004.

“We established the Lida and Frank Turner Endowed Scholarship in 1995,” Frank said. “The scholarship is given to a music major who also serves as the music intern at First Baptist Belton. My dad sang in the choir at First Baptist Belton for over 40 years. He loved the choir and the church, so this was a way to honor him and my mom.” Frank and Marilyn, who own Monteith Abstract and Title Company in Belton, also funded the student lounge in the Meyer Christian Studies building and the Dean of Students office in the new Student Union Building.

ALL IN THE FAMILY “I was a business major, so my favorite memory as a student was moving from the old business building into Parker Academic Center. It felt like a really fancy upgrade,” Brett said. “But more importantly, I met my wife, Allison, at UMHB when we were students there.” Three of the Turners’ nieces also attended UMHB: Melissa Sparks Jiles ‘90, Krista Sparks Stotler ex ’94, and Ashley Lenz, who is a current student. And now, Frank and Marilyn have set a precedent of giving for the next generation of Turner family alumni.

As for the next generation of Turners, Brett and Allison recently teamed up with Brett’s cousin Krista and her husband Larry Stotler ’94, to fund a handicapped section in Crusader Stadium in memory of Melissa Jiles’ daughter Taylor.

“Taylor was disabled and passed away last year at the age of 16,” Brett said. “She was such a special little girl. Since we all graduated from UMHB, we felt that this was the perfect way to honor Taylor’s memory.”

RYAN, JENNIFER & WILLIAM LINDSEY| T R U S T E E

GIVING

For Ryan and Jennifer Lindsey, giving to UMHB is a great way to support a mission they believe in while also giving Ryan the chance to demonstrate his commitment as a Board of Trustees member. But most importantly, it is a way to teach their son the importance of giving back. That is why, when five-year-old William attended football games at Crusader Stadium this fall, he saw his name listed along with his parents’ on a plaque as he entered the President’s Suite. “It is so important for us to teach William how to give,” Ryan said. “We think that seeing his name on something will instill a sense of pride and will also give us many opportunities to talk about why we choose to give as a family. We hope it will create a need and a desire in him to want to give back throughout his lifetime. It really is an important teaching point for us as parents.” The Lindseys’ gift to Crusader Stadium is not the first time they have chosen to make giving a family affair. When the Isabelle Rutherford Meyer Nursing Education Center opened in 2012, Ryan and Jennifer paired up with Ryan’s dad, brother, and sister-in-law to name a room in the new facility in honor of Ryan’s mother, Rebecca Lindsey, who has worked her entire career as a registered nurse. “We let it be a surprise to her, so when we told her the room would be named in her honor, she was thrilled and very touched,” Ryan said. Ryan, who has served on the Board of Trustees since 2011, says he counts it as a privilege to be involved in influencing the lives of thousands of students each year. “We are glad to be plugged in,” he said. “We enjoy being involved with the university and watching it grow. It’s an honor for us to support the university and what it represents. By giving to UMHB, we feel that we are contributing to something much bigger than ourselves.”
