UMHB Alum Makes Leadership Gift to Name New Golf Complex After Beloved Longtime Coach
The new golf performance facility currently under construction now has a name—the Jane and Mac Hickerson Crusader Golf Club. A UMHB golf alum made a leadership gift to name the facility after beloved longtime coach Mac Hickerson and his late wife, Jane. In addition, the four-hole practice course will be called "The Mac" Golf Practice Course.
When Coach Hickerson learned the facility would bear their names, he was stunned.
“I was pretty struck by that. It came unexpectedly, and it means a lot to me,” he said. “I certainly appreciate it, and I’ll help them as much as I can, for as long as I can.”
Mac Hickerson of Temple led the UMHB men's golf team from 1980 to 1999, making him the longest-running
golf coach in UMHB history. He made a significant impression on his players and left a meaningful legacy at UMHB.
He said it was an honor and privilege when President O’Rear recently took him to see the project under development.
“I’m really pleased, and I know it will be a great addition to the university,” he said. “We will realize how important it is as time goes on, and it is certainly going to be an outstanding facility.”
He also said he was surprised and pleased at how large the facility, which is located on campus west of Nolan Creek, is going to be.
“I shouldn’t be surprised because they treated me so well for many years,” he said. “I feel like the university always supported me 100 percent.”
The golf performance center is designed by one of the world's most
widely-acclaimed sports venue designers, Earl Santee of Populous. The four-hole practice course is designed by legendary golfer and world-renowned golf course architect Ben Crenshaw.
Other university friends, Mary Kay and Jerry Conner of Sugar Land, also made a leadership gift for the new complex's clubhouse and locker room, and will be called the Conner Golf Performance Center.
“We’re overwhelmed so many generous donors have come alongside us in this endeavor to provide our student-athletes with this outstanding golf performance facility,” said Randy Mann, vice president for athletics. “Naming the facility in honor of Coach Hickerson and his wife, Jane, makes it even more special. I cannot think of a more exceptional, Godly man who devoted his time and energy into mentoring and coaching his players.”

Ron Brown Celebrated for 36 Years
For 36 years, Ron Brown helped countless students find the financial support they needed to make their dreams come true at UMHB. He was celebrated during a special retirement party on May 25, where former students, numerous colleagues and friends gathered to say “thank you” for his dedication and present the Ron Brown Presidential Endowed Scholarship in his honor.
Brown came to UMHB in 1987, moving from the West Texas oil field to work as the assistant business manager. One year later, President Dr. Bobby Parker asked him to take
over the role of director of financial aid.
During his time as director, the university grew from 1,341 students who received financial assistance totaling $3.2 million to 3,574 students who received more than $100 million in financial aid.
The plaque, which will hang on the administration building, states: “Ron felt he was uniquely positioned by God in his role at the university to serve the Lord by assisting students and their families to obtain financial aid. One of Ron’s greatest joys was enabling students to attend the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.”
CRUSADER SPIRIT BAND

During Homecoming, we will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Crusader Spirit Band. As part of this celebration, we invite all former band members (including Crusader Marching band members and the brass ensembles) to join us for a reunion as honorary band members during the football game. So, dust off your instrument, get ready to connect with band friends, meet current spirit band members, and play on Fredenburg Field.
The reunion costs $30 and includes a meal and a band t-shirt you will wear during the game. If you choose to participate, we will send more details as the date approaches.

Student Follows in Her Parents’ Footsteps While Making Her Own Path
Junior clinical psychology major, Rylee Wilson, was dead set against going to UMHB. She didn’t want to be “that person” who followed in her parents’, Kyle ’99 and Mary Michele (Manley) Wilson ‘97, footsteps by going to the same college where they met and graduated.
Since her dad works as a youth pastor, Rylee grew up labeled a “pastor’s kid” and was commonly known as “Kyle’s daughter” her entire life.
“And not that there’s anything wrong with that; my dad is awesome, and I’m so glad to be my parents’ kid,” she said. “But I was pretty against going to UMHB because I knew that a lot of people at the school knew my parents. I wanted to be my own person, and I was really scared about just being ‘Kyle’s daughter’ again and having a stereotype put on me.”
The spunky redhead feared faculty, staff and alums would compare her to her parents—Mary Michele was known as a “clean-cut, rule-follower,” and Kyle was known as the “campus prankster.”
Instead, she planned to attend Baylor University, where she would simply be known as “Rylee Wilson.”
Something inside her, however, nudged her to have a backup plan in case her plans with Baylor fell through. Sitting down at her computer one afternoon, she decided to take a peek at the UMHB website.
“I ended up scouring the entire website. I mean, like from front to back. Everything.”
Her mind was made up.
“I just felt a peace that I’ve never felt in my life, and I would never consider myself a very peaceful person. I’m very anxious,” she admitted.
Rylee walked into her mother’s room and sat beside her on the bed.
“Mom, I really think I’m supposed to go to UMHB,” Rylee told her. “My mom was shocked because I had said so many times, ‘I’m not going to UMHB.’”
That same afternoon, Rylee withdrew her application from Baylor.
“I’m going to UMHB! That’s it. And it was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
Even though she’s now walking on the same sidewalks her parents once strolled and sitting in the same classrooms they once sat in, Rylee is on a path toward leaving her own mark at the university.
“That is definitely the plan! I love being involved,” she said. Rylee sings on the worship team and is part of the leadership team for the Baptist Student Ministry (which she says is her “favorite ministry ever.”) She sings with the Chapel band and led outreach for the 2023 Easter Pageant, which she’s participated in every year. Rylee works part-time in the University Relations office and attends all the sporting events she can. She joined the BSM Beach Reach team in Padre Island this past spring break, sharing rides and Jesus with beachgoers.
“The cool thing about UMHB is it gives you so many opportunities to serve people and to be the hands and feet of Jesus,” Rylee said.
After graduation, she plans to get a master’s degree and work as a child life specialist at a children’s hospital, comforting children and parents during difficult times.
“I obviously grew up around a lot of youth, and I’ve always loved kids and teenagers,” she said. “As a child life specialist, I’ll deal with all kinds of kids—from those who just need a band-aid to those in critical condition. I think it’s such a cool way to share Jesus and tell them God is good.”
She says two things impacted her heart in a big way when she was growing up—a mission trip to Africa and the unique family her mom and dad built, which includes three younger adopted siblings and Dorothy, a 61-yearold former homeless drug addict that Rylee’s mom befriended years ago while on a church trip.
“My mom has always had a big heart for people who need to be loved, and it’s something she instilled in me,” Rylee said. “God put us together so purposefully. I grew up in a family where we don’t care if you’re biologically related to us or not; you’re our family.”

LOVE OF A TEACHER
Becki Love '20 is the first MyWay student to complete both the bachelor's degree in organizational leadership followed by the alternative certification to become a teacher.
THE ROAD TRAVELEDless
UMHB FEATURES
Becki Love ‘20 did what many high school students do—she went straight from high school into college. But after completing just 39 credits at UMHB, she put her education on hold to get married and start a family. She worked a job she “didn’t love” for 13 years before getting hired as a PE aide at Lakewood Elementary School in Belton, where her children attended. Becki loved that job and worked there for 10 years. When the head coach at her school left, Becki realized how easy it would have been to slide into that position if she had finished her bachelor’s degree. With two years of school left, though, the thought of returning to in-person classes—while she was a fulltime, working mom with young children—felt daunting. She decided online was the way to go.
“I had researched the quickest way I could get my degree online,” Becki said, and one afternoon at her daughter’s basketball game, she found herself sitting next to her daughter's former cheer coach.
“When I told her I was looking at finishing school, she mentioned the MyWay pathway at UMHB, which allows students to move through online classes at their own pace. I had never heard of it, so she sent me all the information, and I was enrolled within that month.”
UMHB FEATURES
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO TEACHING
Even though MyWay program has been around for six years, Becki was the first student to complete both the bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership, followed by the alternative certification program to prepare her to teach.
“With the teacher shortage the way it is right now in Texas, I think this is a fantastic pathway for people like Becki to become certified teachers,” said Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives, Dr. Nancy Bonner, who oversees the program.
HER PERSISTENCE PAID OFF
Becki admits the program was not easy, but she was determined to finish, and her hard work paid off. With her degree and certification, Becki is now a seventh- and eighth-grade girls’ athletic coach and sixth-grade math teacher at South Belton Middle School.
Becki says she signed up to start MyWay just as COVID-19 began ramping up in March 2020. Since all the schools closed and went to online learning, she ended up with a lot of free time that she put toward her studies.
“I knew I only had six months to get 21 classes completed,” she said. “With the support and help of my family, I was able to get it all done!”
When the schools reopened in the fall, and she had to return to work, she continued pushing through her classes.
MYWAY GIVES STUDENTS UNIQUE ROUTE TO BECOMING A TEACHER

WHAT IS ?MyWay
UMHB’s MyWay is an online competencybased pathway with complete flexibility that allows students to go at their own pace. Once mastery of an assessment is demonstrated, students move to the next course, all while having access to a personal support system of success coaches and faculty. Students can get a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership, worship leadership or RN-toBSN. There’s also the TeachingMyWay alternative certification pathway for students who have finished their bachelor’s degree from an accredited university to acquire Texas teaching certification.
“I was able to work on papers during my conference and lunch periods, and if my kids had a sporting event, I was usually seen in the stands doing homework or writing papers.”
She said MyWay’s flexibility helped balance her hectic schedule. Her UMHB professors provided immediate feedback and never left her waiting, so she could edit papers quickly and continuously progress through the work.
In December of that same year, Becki proudly walked across the graduation stage to receive the diploma she had started almost 25 years before.
Her biggest cheerleaders—husband Benny and their two kids, Caden and Taylor—were in the stands cheering her on.
“I think this decision changed my life! God puts us in
places at certain times for a reason, and I am happy I sat next to my daughter's cheer coach at that basketball game. It was the best decision!”
WHEN EXPERIENCE COUNTS
According to Bonner, Becki is precisely the type of student administrators had in mind when they designed the MyWay and TeachingMyWay pathways.
“Our target population is adult learners,” she said. “MyWay touches every pocket of any inconvenience or hindrance an adult learner could have like affordability, convenience, flexibility and accessibility.”
Unlike years ago when students had to be present in class, online learning for non-traditional students is now a popular alternative due to its convenience and flexibility. The scenarios are endless for potential candidates: busy parents, military spouses who move often, executives with demanding work schedules, single parents and alums who want to continue their education at UMHB.
“The beauty of MyWay is it eliminates the elements of having to be physically present somewhere and on someone else’s time,” Bonner said. “This program lets you do it on your time.”
There are numerous people who have accumulated on-the-job work experience, but sometimes that experience comes at the cost of not getting to finish their degree, Bonner added.
“Just because they didn’t follow that timeline doesn’t mean they’re not people we want in management positions, moving up in companies and running companies,” she said. “I love that we’re opening that to people who maybe didn’t have time to be full-time students or who started as full-time students but had to work more and more to pay the bills until they could no longer take classes. It’s really exciting to see people realize they can do this!”
A NEW CHALLENGE FOR A NEW CAREER
College was the last thing on Mike Woods’ radar at 18 years old right out of high school.
“It just didn’t interest me,” he said. “I knew at that age I wouldn’t take it seriously.”
Mike ran his sales and marketing company for several decades, enjoying the freedom of being his

own boss, the flexibility of creating his schedule, and the respectable income he earned while contracting sales with newspapers all over the state. But then COVID-19 hit, and his business suffered a blow. At the same time, he became a single dad and sole provider to his 10-year-old daughter, Cleo, so he could no longer travel for work. He faced the realization that it was time for a new career.
As a highly involved volunteer at his daughter’s school, he had gotten to know the staff members over the years, and many of them kept suggesting he look into teaching. Since his daughter is his number one priority, it dawned on him that being a teacher was a perfect fit for him since their schedules would line up. He soon started taking his basic courses at Temple College and working as a substitute teacher to get his “feet wet.” He now works as an educational aide at the Belton ISD District Alternative Education Program, where he “does a little bit of everything,” including filling in when staff shortages occur.
Mike enrolled in MyWay last December to finish working toward a bachelor’s degree and plans to get his alternative teaching certification, just as Becki did.
“Not only is it flexible, but it’s super affordable,” he said.
During his first five weeks in the program, Mike completed four classes.
“I seize every opportunity to progress through the courses,” he said. “I’m up early studying. I’m up late studying. Any minute I have free, I engage in academic activities, even if it’s five minutes.”
If he keeps up his current pace, Mike says he hopes to graduate with his bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership in May, followed by his teaching certification six to nine months later.
Mike says he is thrilled he discovered MyWay at UMHB and is constantly telling others about the program. The MyWay advisors are available to help prospective students determine if they qualify for admission and whether this pathway to teacher certification is right for them.

travel the globe to give their students a taste of music from other parts of the world. These trips offer students a deeper look into international musical cultures and provide a unique glimpse into how God is working in other parts of the world.
Close your eyes and imagine walking along the coastline of Wales through an enormous archway into the expansive stone interior of a castle built in the 1200s. Now, imagine a chorus of voices joining in a harmonious hymn, echoing deep into spaces where soldiers once bustled about keeping a king and his family safe.
All 12 members of UMHB’s select ensemble, One Voice, traveled to Wales this summer to experience singing inside centuries-old castles and cathedrals as part of their summer singing trip.
“It’s really kind of cool to go to a place where they had these churches or structures that were around when the music was written, so you can get an idea of what it was really supposed to sound like or what it actually felt like back then,” said Dr. Matt Crosby,
assistant professor of music. “It’s exciting to sing in an old space with great acoustics.”
In addition to belting out a few impromptu hymns inside the old castles, One Voice also sang at Chester Cathedral, performed in churches and chapels in the area, gave a concert at a theater on the island of Anglesey and collaborated with a Welsh choir at a food festival where they performed a 45-minute set. The ensemble ventured out on some pilgrimages to visit 14th-century churches where Christians once gathered for outdoor ceremonies as early as the fifth and sixth centuries.
Crosby says he takes the group on a tour every few years, and they have visited Spain, Portugal, Canada and Japan and gone twice to the Canary Islands and Hawaii. He’s also traveled with Dr. Michelle Roueché, professor of music, and the Concert Choir to Austria and Italy and with former professor Dr. David Guess to Germany, where Crosby also toured when he was a student at UMHB.
“Getting to sing in another country is just a great experience,” he said. “Music is an amazing way to bridge cultural and language gaps because everybody speaks the musical language. People appreciate music, even if they can’t understand what you’re saying.”
Once in Wales, One Voice connected with Linguae Christi, which is a mission organization that focuses on reaching the lost for Christ in their native language. One of their hosts from Linguae Christi was 2009 graduate Amelia (Black) McCain, who was with the University Singers when she was a student at UMHB.
Just like going on a mission trip abroad, choir trips provide a glimpse into different cultures and ways of life.

Crosby said the trip was part tour and part mission trip, and they did a lot of prayer walking for the people.
“Part of the experience is seeing what God is doing in other parts of the world, which is really important,” Crosby said. “It gives them the opportunity to look at Christianity through another culture’s perspective.”
INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
This July, Richard “Rick” Novak, associate professor of music, traveled with four music majors to Acqui Terme, Italy, for two weeks of classes and concerts at the InterHarmony International Music Festival.
During the summer months, Italians from all over the country descend upon this small town to enjoy entertainment from music students from around the world, all performing in Italian.
“Within just a couple hours of landing in Italy, our singers were singing the pieces, in Italian, that they’ve been preparing all summer,” Novak said. “This gave them an opportunity to prepare music in Italian and then sing it for an Italian audience. This really upped the level of learning for them. The audience wants it to be authentic, and they give feedback after they’re finished.”
Novak was one of three voice teachers attending the first summer session and spent the two weeks providing vocal lessons. His trip was made possible thanks to a UMHB Faculty Development Grant. In addition to
student and faculty concerts, the four UMHB students attended master classes with famous musicians offering musical coaching and Italian diction.
“It’s one thing to learn about music in a classroom or a studio, but a whole different experience to actually travel to these places and go to the opera houses where operas were performed,” Novak said.
Summer opportunities like the music festival are also valuable because students network and meet other singers from across the globe.
“It’s a really safe environment for them to try things out, and hopefully, they’ll make connections with conductors and pianists from all over the world,” Novak said. “Social media makes it so easy to connect with them later.”
The students were also treated to excursions to Genoa and Turin to visit opera houses, and after the festival, Novak traveled to conservatories in Milan, Genoa, Bologna and Florence to explore opportunities and potentially create international partnerships.
“I felt like I was on a Lewis and Clark expedition, going around exploring to see what the possibilities might look like,” he said.
NOT JUST FOR STUDENTS
When it comes to summer traveling and performing in other countries, UMHB professors also

enjoy sharing their own talents with the world. In June, Novak had an opportunity to sing with a trio he performs with at the International Viola Congress in Thailand. The group performed a song cycle they wrote when he was a professor at Texas State University called “The Stations of Mychal,” which tells the story of a fire chaplain who was killed during the 9/11 attacks. Novak said he was honored to perform it in New York City two years ago for the 20th anniversary.
After his trio wrapped up in Thailand, the three headed to Tokyo to perform at a Franciscan parish— the only English-speaking Catholic parish in Tokyo.
“It was a blessing to travel to Thailand and Tokyo to share this tribute.”
BECOMING A BETTER ARTIST
Dr. Michelle Schumann, a professor of music, also performed this summer at the International Viola Congress in Thailand. It was her first trip to Asia, but she is no stranger to playing piano at venues all over Europe. She’s been sharing her talent each summer at worldwide festivals for the last 20 years.
“The creative aspect of being a musician is so enriching and enlivening. For me, it’s recharging,” Schumann said. “I also like the creative aspect, so when I come back to my students, I’m not only recharged, which is important, I’m also a better artist.”
ONE VOICE IN WALES
Schumann frequently performs during her nine months as a professor, but from May through August, when she’s on break from teaching, it’s all about traveling and collaborating.
“I love the constant exchange of ideas, and I always learn new things on these trips,” she said. “I bring all of that back to my students.”
When she’s not traveling, she and her family spend much of their summer surrounded by the luscious green forests and mountains in Santa Fe, NM, where the weather is “way less oppressive” than in Central Texas, and she can hunker down and practice.
“It’s a very creative place to be. Just a very peaceful place to kind of get away from everything for a little bit,” Schumann said. “That was a major thing that older composers from the 18th and 19th centuries used to do in the summertime—go out into the mountains and seek refuge and retreat from the regular, day-to-day activity.”
When school starts back each fall, she feels refreshed and ready to teach. And by the following summer, she is packing and looking forward to her next adventure.
“It’s so valuable to be a part of the world—the global world—which sometimes gets a bad rap. But when we become insulated—and we feel like everything that’s going on that’s meaningful is in our own backyard—I think we get further divided from the rest of the world,” she said. “When we travel and meet people, we realize that we’re all much more similar than we expected.”

EXPLORING
SUMMER CAMP OPENS WORLD OF NURSING TO POTENTIAL
STUDENTS
BY CHRISTI MAYS
Riley Roeh and her two sisters were each born with autoimmune diseases, and while growing up, she spent her fair share of days in and out of hospitals, either for herself or visiting her sisters.
After observing the nurses, physicians and therapists over the years, the high school senior from Katy grew fond of their service and dedication to helping others. Her desire grew to help people herself one day in some capacity of medical work.
“I wasn’t quite sure exactly what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to care for patients in a meaningful way,” she said. “I don’t know why, but the nurses always stuck out to me for good and bad.”
She and 21 other high school students from across the state visited UMHB this summer to experience what it would be like to be a nursing student during the week-long Explore Cru Nursing Summer Camp. The camp allows upper-level high school students the opportunity to experience a career in nursing and what college life at UMHB has to offer, including academics, spirit and traditions, faith and learning and campus life. This year marked the camp’s 10th anniversary of inviting students to explore the world of nursing, and students learned a myriad of new skills, including taking vital signs and performing cardiac assessments and CPR.
“The whole point of this camp is to recruit young people to the profession of nursing and see if that is what they want to invest their time, money and energy,” said Kelda McMullen-Fix, an assistant professor of nursing at the Scott & White School of Nursing at UMHB, who created the camp with Dr. Tracy Booth, associate dean and professor. “The camp’s purpose is to help solidify their decision to enter into nursing school.”
During the week, students like Reese Hodge, a high school senior from Dallas, learned that nursing school isn’t for the faint of heart. Ask any nursing student, and they will agree nursing school is notoriously difficult, with an intense curriculum, fast-paced itineraries, extensive study and mastery of skills all required. And then comes thorough prepping for the NCLEX after graduation.
“This camp has definitely been eye-opening,” Reece said. “I didn’t know everything a nurse does in their day-to-day work. I do find the value in nurses a lot more now.”
At the beginning of the week, she and the other students were each given a new stethoscope, which they put to good use in the simulation hospital.
“Everything is just so realistic,” Reese said of the Isabelle Rutherford Meyer Nursing Education Center,
F A L L 2023 | UMHB LIFE 15
which features a simulation hospital with high fidelity “patient” simulators, a nurses’ station, four standard hospital rooms, an ER/trauma room, a labor and delivery room, a critical care room and a home health room.
Kate Sparks, a high school senior from Waco, is also considering the nursing field but wanted to get a taste of what college life at UMHB might be like.
“We were really kind of thrown into the college experience—eating in the dining hall, staying in the dorms and more,” she said. “It was an awesome preview for college life and really put into perspective what we’re going to experience.”
Like Riley, Kate was drawn to the medical field when she was young and spent time in the hospital. This past
year in high school, as she took several medical classes and got her medical assistant license, she fell in love with the idea of nursing. The camp solidified her decision further.
McMullen-Fix said it is not uncommon for at least two or three students to declare pre-nursing as their major and then change their mind after their first semester. Either students find out they don’t like all the science involved or find themselves interested in other majors when they learn about them. Attending the camp gives students an up-close and realistic look at what is involved in nursing school and emphasizes the fact it will be a lot of work.
Students all agreed the camp gave them the

knowledge they needed to guide them into talking more with their families and making an educated decision about whether they want to pursue nursing or not.
“That’s completely the point of the camp,” McMullen-Fix said. “Now they can go home with more knowledge and make informed decisions about their future career.”
And even if that decision happens to not be in nursing, she said the students also got a look into other health professions, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, and physician assistant majors at UMHB.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
As McMullen-Fix and Booth look toward next year’s camp, they said it might look slightly different from the last 10 years.
“We’re just looking at some alternatives for the same experience, but maybe a different format,” she said. That could mean a shorter camp since people are becoming busier and busier and don’t want to commit to an entire week.
“Whatever the camp looks like next year, it will still be an amazing opportunity for students to come and explore a career in nursing.”

DREAM JOB
Dylan Burson, a 2018 business management graduate, got his “dream job” right out of college, working for the Dallas Mavericks.

DYLAN BURSON ‘18
Slam Dunk
Alumnus Finds Dream Job With Dream Team
Dylan Burson ’18 pictured what his dream job might look like while he was in college, but never imagined it would be with the Dallas Mavericks.
As a service and retention executive, he works mainly with 500 members who hold season tickets, helping them renew their tickets every year and ensuring they have the best experiences at the games through in-game activities and appreciation events. Because of his love for the job, he was awarded the MVP Award of Service, which recognizes that he is dedicated and consistently works hard, communicates well with his boss and is always looking for ways to improve. This award is given to someone who is selfless in their actions and only thinks about what is good for the team instead of themselves.
“I was extremely grateful and appreciative of this award,” he said. “I put in a ton of work in my season to be the best version of myself, and it’s definitely rewarding to be recognized.”
When asked how one gets the award, Dylan said, “Never making an excuse and always finding ways to improve, while at the same time, understanding it’s not all about me and that I should be helping my teammates around me as well.”
His focus is now on helping his teammates achieve their goals.
“I know I wouldn’t be in the position I am today without the knowledge and advice I took from others, so if I can even be a small resource for anyone, I’m always happy to do so. It’s been much more rewarding helping others achieve their goals than being rewarded for any of mine.”
Dylan said he believes UMHB is one of the reasons he is successful at what he does. UMHB was a big part of his life from meeting his wife, Sophia Vieyra ‘18 at college to making great friends, many of whom served as groomsmen. Ben Taylor, who is associate director of Admissions & Recruiting, even officiated his wedding.
While at college, Dylan loved working as a resident assistant at McLane Hall and developing bonds with all the residents.
“UMHB was a way for us to be close to home, be part of a great community and be somewhere that we wouldn’t just be a number,” he said. “You get to know so many people and professors, but you never feel as if you’re not seen.”
He is especially appreciative of all the support from his professors, who helped him get to where he is today.
Until his senior year, he wasn’t sure what he would do career-wise; Dylan just knew he wanted a job that made him happy, and believes he has found that!
“I have an amazing opportunity to create experiences for families, businesses and anyone else who comes to our games,” he said. “I’m surrounded by the greatest coworkers I could ask for. I’ve made some lifelong friends and mentors with the Mavs. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else!”
Originally from China Spring, Texas, Dylan heard about UMHB through his high school best friend, and they decided to attend together. He majored in business management with a minor in marketing and enjoyed his time with his professors and other friends.
“There’s a lot of really good people, and being able to form those bonds and have your tight circle of support and encouragement was huge,” he said.
One of the people he attributes to his success after graduation is Dr. Mindy Welch, associate professor in the McLane College of Business, who helped connect Dylan to the Dallas Mavericks through LinkedIn.
“Getting into business and sports industry careers require great networking and connections, and UMHB provided me with those great connections,” Dylan said. “I am grateful for the start UMHB gave me.”
