welcomes its newest group of students to campus. It is fun to see these new students get excited when they experience the Bawcom Student Union or Crusader Stadium for the first time; their pride in being a part of UMHB is unmistakable.

I know, because I feel a similar pride. As I read through the names on this year’s Honor Roll of Donors, I am proud that so many people have come forward to help us make the UMHB experience one that can be both affordable and enriching. Seven hundred and fifty freshmen joined our growing student body this fall, and 35% of those are firstgeneration college students. This speaks to the impressive number of new scholarships that are being awarded to students in need, thanks to gifts to the Momentum campaign.

PHIL & LINDA SMITH | L E G A C Y

GIVING

When Phil and Linda Smith describe the UMHB community, they say, “There’s not a dud in the bunch.” Their special relationship with the university dates back to when Phil got out of the Army and wanted to begin teaching in Killeen. At the time, he specialized in secondary education, but the local school districts only had openings in elementary areas. Phil enrolled at UMHB to complete the courses necessary for these positions. “UMHB was a stepping stone for me to get into teaching, and it is very special for that reason,” he said.

At the same time, Linda seized the opportunity to attend classes as well, and she remembers their introduction to UMHB fondly: “We loved the people of UMHB. They are such good people.”

Both Phil and Linda say their meager beginnings taught them to work hard and save money—something that influenced their desire to establish an endowed scholarship for veterans at UMHB. As one of 9 children, Phil grew up in a military family on a farm in Iowa. “I remember living in that small town of 3000,” he said. “The wealthiest person in town was the man who owned the car dealership, but he never spent a dime of it. I think of him often. This scholarship for veterans and their families is an opportunity for us to do something beyond ourselves—to do something that will be around longer than we will.”

Linda echoes this sentiment when speaking of the practice of giving.

“This is one of the best things we’ve ever done,” she said. “This gives us a greater sense of enjoyment than any individual accomplishments have. We are blessed to be able to give back, and we intend to continue to do so.”

The Smiths feel the Christian education at UMHB is especially important, and they want veterans and their families to have the opportunity to experience a Christ-centered learning community. “With everything going on in the world, the Christian aspect is more important than ever,” Phil said.

“Ultimately, we feel we’ve received more than we’ve given,” Linda said.

“This is our way of paying it forward.”

ALUMNI GIVING

As the youngest of four children, Betty Burns was the first of her siblings to go to college. “Dad went to college, so when I decided to go as well, my parents encouraged me,” she said.

“In the fall of my senior year of high school, my mom was going through the Baptist Standard and saw an advertisement for UMHB. I still have that ad burned into my memory to this day.”

Betty and her parents decided to visit the campus that weekend, and it happened to be the same weekend as the Miss MHB pageant. The beauty of the campus and the excitement of the student activities had much to do with Betty’s desire to attend. “I knew I wanted a small school and a Christian learning environment, but the minute I stepped on campus, I was certain UMHB was where I wanted to be and where I should be,” she said.

Betty recalls her various gifts to UMHB fondly, but one gift was exceptionally significant to her. “I began giving with the loyalty fund and continued with the campaign for the Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center,” she said. “In honor of my mom and dad, I gave money for a stained-glass window to be placed in Manning Chapel. It was like I had come full circle. I was finally able to give back—finally able to honor my mother and father.”

To this day, UMHB remains a very special place to Betty.

“I feel the school has given me so much, not just four years of fun,” she said. “I believe in the school, and I believe God just keeps blessing it.”

THE LONG FAMILY LIFETIME GIVING Kathy Long is soon to complete her 20th year on faculty at UMHB, and she is quick to acknowledge the importance of the past. “While my story is fun, our legacy began 100 years ago,” she said. In May, the Kathryn Fagan Long Presidential Endowed Scholarship was established by Dr. William B. Long and Mary Farrow Long to honor their daughter-in-law Kathy. “At the dedication, we realized it had been 100 years since my husband’s grandmother, Sadie Flynn Boone, had been a student here,” she said. “It is so meaningful that the legacy I enjoy and my children enjoy actually began 100 years ago this year.”

Kathy graduated from Mary Hardin-Baylor College in 1977 with a degree in nursing. Soon after, as a Scott and White nurse, she shared a patient with her soon-to-be husband, Dr. William F. Long (Bill), who was a Texas Tech medical student on rotations at the time. After Bill served 12 years of active duty, the Longs moved back to Belton, and Kathy became an associate professor in the College of Nursing beginning in 1997. She also served as Director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program for seven years.

This scholarship has been a multi-generational effort, as many members of the Long family have been students, graduates, or faculty at UMHB. Bill’s father, Dr. William B. Long, served as campus physician for 20 years, and his mother, Mary Farrow Long, was a member of the English Department faculty for 18 years.

Kathy and Bill’s four children are also part of the UMHB family.

When Kathy reflects on the importance of giving, she connects the past to the future. “I benefitted as an undergraduate from scholarships, so I understand their significance,” she said. “Bill and I want to set the same example William and Mary set for us, by honoring those who came before us. The legacy of ‘passing it on’ is what we value as a family.”
