welcome HONOR It is a great time to be a Crusader!

The Bawcom Student Union opened in August and has already become the new hub for student activity. We welcomed 3,733 students onto campus this year, which is an increase of 241 over last fall. For 25 out of the last 30 years, and for the sixth consecutive year, enrollment numbers have set a record. And on the horizon is the new performing arts center, the only facility remaining in the Campus Master Plan, which is coming closer to fruition through the generous gifts of donors.

Without the support of alumni and friends of the university, UMHB would not be able to serve our students with enhanced academic programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and scholarship awards to meet their needs. There are many different areas to contribute to, but all have a common goal – helping students succeed both during their time at UMHB and as they carry their skills out into the world. Thank you for joining us as we work toward our vision of being the university of choice for Christian higher education in the Southwest. We are grateful for your investment in our students. I look forward to all God has in store for the new year!

EDNA BRIDGES| L I F E T I M E

GIVING

When hearing the name Dr. Edna Bridges ‘61, most people think of an influential teacher, avid UMHB supporter, active church member, reliable volunteer, and loving wife, mother, and grandmother—all of which are true. But what most people do not know about her are the sacrifices Edna has made and continues to make to ensure these descriptions are true. At age 16 she married Bobby Bridges, and the couple had three children. Although a busy wife and mother, Edna didn’t lose sight of her dream of becoming a teacher. She attended junior college and got a teaching certificate. But her education came at a price. “I stayed up nearly all night sewing so I could pay for my tuition,” she said. Meanwhile her husband was making $15.00 a week running their family-owned store in order to make ends meet. Her certificate completed, Edna taught six years at an elementary school. A fellow educator encouraged her to go to UMHB. She wanted to, but was once again faced with the question of affordability. Edna took out a loan from a trust fund established through the school, but she needed more assistance. Two professors offered to help. “Mrs. Miles and Ms. Capt gave me money,” she said. “They were so sweet and helped me afford my education.” As a recipient of such generosity, Edna was eager to give her first gift to UMHB in 1964, shortly after the Alma Reeves Chapel on campus burned down. “When I saw that fire, I saw a need,” Edna said of the fire that demolished UMHB’s former chapel. “Bobby and I started designating $5.00 a month to give to the school. We haven’t stopped donating since.” Although still paying off her own college debt, the Bridges believed it was important to give back immediately. “Giving is where my heart is,” she said. The couple has been donating to UMHB for more than 50 years. Recently, they established an endowed scholarship and included UMHB in their estate plan. “I love Mary Hardin-Baylor,” she said. “UMHB is a place that truly takes care of its students. My giving is a reflection of what the UMHB experience has meant to me over the years.”

PAUL & ROOPA DEARING | A L U M N I

GIVING

In 1974, 16-year-old Roopa (Ruth Mahtani) Dearing ‘79 boarded a plane with one suitcase, 700 shillings, and an adventurous spirit. After meeting a couple from Texas who were visiting her home of Kenya, Africa, Roopa was afforded the opportunity to move to the U.S. “People bought me a plane ticket to come to America,” Roopa said. “They gave me a home, clothed me, fed me, and took care of me.” More than 40 years later, Roopa is still in awe of the generosity she was shown. “People were loving to me, and in turn, they were reflecting the love of Christ,” she said. It was this affection that led her towards salvation, she noted. While at UMHB, Roopa studied nursing. “I was able to go to college because people believed in me,” she said. “Higher education was just a dream because my parents couldn’t afford it.” In 1978, Roopa met Dr. Paul Dearing ’81. Paul had just gotten out of the Navy and was visiting his parents in Belton. Although he had no intentions of going to UMHB, after meeting Roopa, Paul’s future was painted in purple and gold. “It’s uncanny how meeting the right woman can radically alter the trajectory of your life,” Paul laughed. “Before I knew it, I was enrolled at Mary Hardin-Baylor.” The couple got married in 1981 and then moved to San Antonio where Paul was accepted into medical school. Through the years, their alma mater has remained special to them. This year the Dearings added to an endowed scholarship they established in 2001, which was made in honor of their parents and two other couples who have supported them during their lives. Because Paul and Roopa have both been involved in the medical field, the scholarship benefits international students in the field of nursing or science. “There is value in investing in other people’s lives,” Roopa said. “I am where I am today because people invested in me.”

MICHAEL COOK | E N D O W E D

SCHOLARSHIP

After serving six years as a medic in the U.S. Air Force, Michael Cook knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life helping people. After earning his bachelor’s degree in nursing from Incarnate Word University and his master’s from the University of Texas at Austin, he moved to Temple in 1982 to begin his career as a critical care nurse at one of Scott & White’s intensive care units. At Scott & White, Michael became friends with UMHB alumni Jerry Caldwell ’73 and Janice Caldwell ’79. “They are my heroes,” Michael said. “Janice was my mentor when I was younger. She supported me and helped guide me through my first years of adapting in the workplace.” More than 30 years later, Michael still works in the ICU. Reflecting on the influence that the Caldwells have had on his life, Michael established an endowed scholarship to help nursing students. “I have worked with lots of people from UMHB—both students and faculty—and everybody has been so nice to me,” Michael said. “The people at Mary Hardin-Baylor touch my heart.” Michael has gradually become more involved with Crusader culture. As a passionate basketball fan, he has been attending Cru women’s games for nearly 15 years. “One game per year I buy the players roses to show my gratitude for the great job they do on the court,” Michael said. “Whether they win or lose, they support each other, and that lifts my spirits.” Michael’s ties to UMHB have grown in other ways, too. In 2012 Michael became an adjunct faculty member in UMHB’s Scott & White College of Nursing, and this year he joined the Legacy Society by including the university in his will. “I consider UMHB my home,” Michael said. “There’s a spirit about the people that’s different than anywhere else.”

BRENT & DEBBIE MCKINNEY LEGACY SOCIETY Having traveled to Honduras, Germany, Hawaii, and Kuwait, Brent McKinney ’08 was not your traditional Crusader student when he first enrolled at UMHB. “I’d experienced the world—both the good and the bad that humanity can do,” Brent said. After high school, Brent enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was accepted into flight school and became a medical evacuation pilot. After finishing his service, McKinney settled into Belton and enrolled at UMHB. Living off campus with his wife and managing a full-time job, Brent had his hands full. But that didn’t stop him from truly experiencing all UMHB could offer. “I had many ‘Ah-ha’ moments working on my chemistry degree,” Brent said. “Some of those instances were science-related, but others were about faith.” He noted, “It was because of UMHB that I gained a better understanding of what my purpose is. I was challenged with questions like, ‘What am I here for?’ and ‘What am I going to leave behind?’” After graduating, Brent became a consultant for a nuclear power facilities company, and he now works in cyber security. He believes so much in the value of an education that he and his wife, Debbie, fund an annual named scholarship for veterans studying science and technology. “I want to be able to give my experience at UMHB to someone else,” he said. “I wouldn’t be here without the help I received.” The couple has also set up a planned gift through their estate. “We can’t have children, so for us, this is our legacy,” Debbie said. “We spend our lives doing what’s right by others, so with our deaths we want to do the same thing. We want to have something to be remembered by when we leave this world.”
