When alumni return to Mary Hardin-Baylor after being away for some time, it is fun to watch their reactions: they always tell me, “I can’t believe how much the campus has changed!” And when I stop and think about it, I feel the same way. With the addition of Cummins Field House, Baugh Center for the Visual Arts, Isabelle Rutherford Meyer Nursing Education Center, J.W. Williams Service Center, Crusader Stadium, Bawcom Student Union, and the renovations of Hardy Hall and Mabee Student Success Center—all in the last four years—our campus has undergone dramatic changes that have opened amazing new opportunities for our students. What is less visible but equally important is the number of new scholarships that are being awarded to students. Each fall in the last decade has brought in a record-breaking number of students to UMHB. As the number of students has grown, so has the need for scholarships, and I am proud of the way that so many people have stepped forward to help make the UMHB experience affordable for students in need. All of this has been made possible by donors like you, who care about providing the finest in Christian higher education for our students. Through the generosity and faithfulness of the alumni and friends listed on these pages, UMHB is opening new pathways for young men and women to prepare for Christian leadership around the world. Thank you for making this progress possible!

CAROLYN OWENS| L I F E T I M E

GIVING

Carolyn Owens understands the importance of scholarships. As a senior at Holland High School, she was offered a scholarship to attend Mary HardinBaylor in 1958. She was awarded the coveted Wilsonart scholarship, sponsored by Temple business man Ralph Wilson. “It paid for everything— tuition, room and board, books, plus $100 spending money per semester,” she recalls. “When I graduated, I didn’t owe anything!” Owens’ degree in home economics education opened the door to a teaching career that eventually brought her back to UMHB. After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Riley Owens, and went to work teaching home economics; after several moves around Texas, she and Riley moved to Academy, and she taught remedial reading in Holland. A subsequent stint teaching special education in Temple ISD led to her being hired to teach in the UMHB education department in 1975. For the next 39 years, she prepared countless young teachers for careers in the classroom. Following her retirement in August 2014, the UMHB Board of Trustees honored her outstanding service to the university by awarding her the rank of Professor Emeritus. It was during those years on the faculty that the Owens began making regular gifts to the university. Carolyn recalls that the death of her father in January 1981 prompted her to focus particularly on scholarships. “I remember being at the cemetery after the funeral and seeing all the beautiful flowers on his grave. A few days later, I returned and found the flowers scattered all over the cemetery. I decided I wanted to do something that was lasting to honor my parents. So Riley and I set up two endowed scholarships, one in memory of his parents and the other in memory of mine.” The scholarships bring her joy, because she knows they will help future students, like she and Riley were helped years ago. “UMHB gave so much to me as a student and to Riley as a campus boy. The professors gave me the nurturing and knowledge I needed to have a good career in teaching. Our gifts will be used to help other students like me, and for that I am grateful.”

BRUCE & RENEE MATOUS P A R E N T G I V I N G As longtime residents of the Temple/Belton area, Bruce and Renee Matous knew about Mary Hardin-Baylor and even brought their young daughters to the campus for music lessons and summer swimming lessons. Their relationship with the university became more personal, though, when their daughter Morgan decided to enroll at UMHB. “When she was a student at Holy Trinity High School, Morgan took some dual credit courses at UMHB, and she fell in love with the place,” Bruce recalls. “When the time came to apply to colleges, she didn’t want to apply to any school but UMHB.” As Morgan began working toward her degree in social work, Bruce and Renee were impressed with what a positive experience she was having, and they decided they wanted to be a part of what UMHB was doing for young people. “Renee and I believe in faith-based education,” Bruce said. “When you couple faith-based education with excellence in academics, you are building the Christian leaders of tomorrow. “We need employees who are well grounded in their faith to lead our businesses. We need community leaders, nurses, technicians, educators, and coaches who have received a faithbased education, one that they can build upon as they start their careers. And we see that students are getting this kind of foundation at UMHB,” he said. “We view our support of UMHB as an investment in Christian higher education, one that yields dividends that bring us great satisfaction.”

VINCE & BARBARA BANKS TRUSTEE GIVING When Vince Banks came to UMHB in 1982, it never occurred to him that he would one day serve on the university’s board of trustees. Having finished his associate degree at Jacksonville Baptist College, he was looking for a school where he could complete a bachelor’s degree in business administration and maybe continue playing collegiate basketball for another couple of years. A native of nearby Rockdale, Texas, he found that Mary Hardin-Baylor offered what he was looking for in a degree program, and his tryout for Crusader basketball netted him a place on the team. Vince did well in his studies and, along the way, met a pretty Belton girl named Barbara who stole his heart. He graduated in 1984, married Barbara in 1985, and went to work for Walmart. Today they live in Round Rock, and Vince supervises more than a dozen stores in Central Texas as a Walmart Market Manager, serving as an interface between the corporate home office and managers at the individual stores. “My degree from UMHB helped me progress in my career in ways I didn’t expect,” Vince says. “When I went to work for Walmart, a degree was not required for movement into management. But as the years went by, it became a preferred qualification, and having the degree put me in a better position to advance with the company.” His experience playing Crusader basketball became a tie that kept him involved with UMHB. “I made good friendships with the guys I played with, and I always tried to come back to play in the annual alumni basketball game,” Vince says. “It has been amazing to see the growth and change in the school through the years! When the opportunity came to serve on the board of trustees, I was happy to accept. “We have been fortunate, and God has provided many blessings in our lives. We want to be good stewards with His gifts, and giving to UMHB is a great way to do that.”

DON & PAT JACKSON|L E G A C Y

GIVING

Pat Jackson came to UMHB in 1981 as a non-traditional student. “I was thirty years old, and I needed to complete my college degree. I went to the financial aid office and said, ‘I have no money. Can you help me go to college?’ They sat me down and found a way.” Working full time while she took classes, she finished her BBA degree the next year and went to work doing media relations and marketing in the non-profit sector. Don Jackson grew up in Bell County and worked for 50 years in road construction, starting out “on a shovel” and moving up to the position of construction superintendent. He remembers being on the UMHB campus when his crew was hired to help construct the Sanderford Complex and parts of Independence Village. Throughout their careers, the Jacksons lived what they termed a “normal” life. “We came from humble beginnings,” says Pat. “Our parents worked hard and taught us to save. So when we married, we were frugal with our money. We lived on Don’s salary, and we took my earnings and set them aside in savings.” Though their contact with UMHB had been minimal in the 30 years after Pat’s graduation, the Jacksons found after retirement that they enjoyed attending Crusader football games. As their involvement with the school grew, they felt a growing conviction that they should include the university in their estate plans. “We believe it is important to give back,” Pat says. “You realize as you get older that the things you have achieved have been done with the help of others.” “And you can’t do any of it without the assistance of the Lord,” Don adds. So the Jacksons established an endowed scholarship, to be funded through their estate, and asked that it be awarded to female students in the McLane College of Business in the years to come. “I think the students who come here are marvelous,” says Pat. “They are bright and engaging, and they make UMHB a special place to be. So it makes us happy to know we are making a way for students to attend UMHB, just as others did for me.”
