FAL L 2011

welcome HONOR Thank you for supporting Mary Hardin-Baylor. With cooler weather finally upon us and the end of 2011 quickly approaching, it is important to look back and acknowledge the people whose generosity fueled another extraordinary year at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Your contributions provided invaluable support to the university. Whether you gave to support scholarships, enhance academic programs, or construct needed facilities, you can rest assured that your gift is influencing the lives of countless young people. I am also pleased to announce the formation of the President’s Leadership Circle (listed beginning on page 10). This new initiative allows me, as president, to personally recognize those who are making a positive impact though giving $1,000 or more each year. We are grateful for your faithfulness and demonstrated leadership in giving. Let me take this opportunity to thank all of our donors, on behalf of our entire university community, for your continuing dedication to the university’s mission and its students. Mary Hardin-Baylor is stronger because of your support.

DR. CLIFFA FOSTER F A C U LT Y / S TA F F G I V I N G

For professor Dr. Cliffa Foster, giving back to UMHB is evidence of her life coming full-circle. As an undergraduate student at a small Baptist college in northern Mississippi, Foster received an endowed scholarship established by a faculty member. “Because she gave back to the university in which she taught, it afforded me an opportunity,” Foster said. “I feel like it was paid forward for me, and I can’t help but feel that it is now my calling to do the same as which was done for me.” Foster, who has worked at Mary Hardin-Baylor for 21 years, was first introduced to the university when she was working as a high school volleyball coach in Athens, Texas. “At that time, one of my former classmates was the UMHB volleyball coach. I was trying to help my team’s senior setter get a scholarship, so I brought her down to Belton for a visit, and the coach gave her a scholarship.” That senior setter’s name? Julie Wheeler O’Rear ’90, who would go on to become the current first lady of UMHB. “Visiting the campus with Julie left an impression on me because of my own experience as a student at a small Baptist college. Christian higher education was very familiar to me and had made a huge impact on my life,” Foster said. And now, Foster gives so that she can influence her students’ lives, just as, years ago, her professor’s gift influenced hers. “It’s not huge what I give, but I trust that God uses it the same as he did the widow’s mite. He blesses the little things and uses them to influence people in big ways. Giving can impact a student’s lifelong journey and help them then pay it forward to those they come in contact with. I think that is the greatest gift any of us can give someone.”

DOUG & CAROL ROWALD PRESIDENT’S LEADERSHIP CIRCLE

Local business owners Doug and Carol Rowald watched their landscaping business grow from a small start-up in 1989 to a thriving company of over 100 employees today. In that same period, the Heart of Texas Landscaping founders witnessed the same kind of expansion at Mary Hardin-Baylor. “It’s just amazing to see the university growth after we started getting involved with giving in the early ’90s. We are very proud to be a part of it,” Doug said. Carol said they were drawn to support Mary Hardin-Baylor because of its commitment to Christian education. “The university doesn’t just help local people, it helps people from other areas get an education and then go back to their hometowns and contribute there. We love seeing the results of young adults leaving this environment with an education that prepares them to go out into the world and serve God,” she said, adding that she and her husband consider it a privilege to support such a mission. “We are blessed to be able to contribute to this university. It’s a gift to us that Mary Hardin-Baylor is here and continues to thrive in the community, because it is something we are all proud of. “ 6

ROY & JEAN POTTS LEGACY SOCIETY

If it wasn’t for Mary Hardin-Baylor, it is likely Jean and Roy Potts would have never met. As a young man growing up in Belton, Roy frequently ran errands for Burt Hall dorm mother Mrs. C. A. Dahnke. “I had an old car that had been my grandfather’s, so I was always running errands when Mrs. Dahnke needed stamps or to mail letters, because she didn’t have a car. One day I asked her to find me a date, and this is what she came up with,” Roy said, laughing as he motioned toward his wife. Jean Gray Potts ’49 was a Mary Hardin-Baylor student who lived in Burt Hall at that time. And, as they say, the rest is history. Over the years, the Potts have felt it was important to continue supporting the school that first brought them together. As owners of Cochran, Blair and Potts, the state’s oldest department store, located in downtown Belton, the couple has seen the positive impact the university has on community businesses. “We’ve always wanted to give back to our community, and giving to the school is a good way to do it. We hope our gifts will help the university grow. It helps the community to have Mary Hardin-Baylor.”

DENNIS & ANN TURK LIFETIME GIVING

As a child, Belton native Ann Turk lived just a few blocks from the Mary Hardin-Baylor campus. She remembers riding her bicycle up to the school for piano lessons in Presser Hall as a little girl. Later, when she went off to college at the University of Texas, she would return home in the summers to attend classes at UMHB. “We go back a long way with Mary Hardin-Baylor,” Ann said. “It is a great school, both academically and because they make it a priority to really take care of their students. It’s been exciting to watch it grow and change over the years.” She and her husband, Dennis, have faithfully supported the university for over 15 years. Prior to retirement, Dennis worked as an engineer at Mobil Chemical, which matches their charitable gifts through the Mobil Education Foundation. “It is clear that the university is growing, and with that growth comes the need for scholarships,” he said. “We’re dedicated to making sure that the funds that I am allotted through the Mobil Foundation are used fully in the community. We continue to give to UMHB every year because we know our money is going to a very appropriate place.” PHILANTHROPY | FALL 2011

JERRY CALDWELL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

After meeting through Mary Hardin-Baylor’s nursing program, Jerry Caldwell ’73 and his wife Janice ’79 devoted their lives to nursing. Both spent their careers working at Scott and White Hospital in Temple—Janice as manager of the post-anesthesia care unit, and Jerry as coordinator of the hospital’s response system for myocardial infarction patients. So when Janice passed away at the age of 52 from sudden cardiac arrest, Jerry felt it was only fitting to establish an endowed scholarship for nursing students in his wife’s honor. “Janice and I had talked about establishing a scholarship for years. The hospital has been good to us and, if you do a good job, you’ll make good money. We were planning to establish this scholarship when we retired, so when Janice suddenly died it was a natural transition for me to just do it,” he said. Jerry established the Janice Muehlstein Caldwell Endowed Scholarship in 2009, and friends and coworkers helped build the fund with their memorial gifts. Last year, Jerry had the opportunity to meet the scholarship’s first recipient. “It was a great experience to be able to meet Dana and see how this scholarship is directly impacting her life,” he said. Jerry, who was one of the first two male nursing graduates after the university officially went coeducational, said he has witnessed first-hand how the training UMHB nursing students receive sets them apart once they enter the workforce. “You won’t find a UMHB nurse that doesn’t know how to take care of patients when they get out of school,” he said. “It is not only the importance placed on the education, but also the clinical training that really equips them for success. I can’t think of a better way to carry on Janice’s legacy than to provide that level of quality education for future nursing students.” PHILANTHROPY | FALL 2011
