Welcome to the University of Mary HardinͲ Baylor’s FiŌh Annual Scholars’ Day. Sponsored by the College of Sciences, Scholars’ Day showcases outstanding undergraduate and graduate reͲ search that has taken place on the UMHB camͲ pus during the academic year. Nearly 110 UMHB students have contributed to this year’s presentaƟons. We hope you enjoy meeƟng with them today and learning about their exciƟng research. Please Įll out a feedback survey and tell us how we can make Scholars’ Day even beƩer next year. (CompleƟng the survey also enters you to win one of four $50 iTunes giŌ cards!) SCHOLARS’ DAY GUEST SPEAKER 11:00 AM (Brindley Auditorium) Dr. Benjamin Pierce received a B.S. in Biology from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Colorado. In 2005, he joined the faculty at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX, where he is Professor of Biology and holder of the Lillian Nelson PraƩ Chair. His research interests focus on populaƟon geneƟcs, geneƟcs, evoluƟon, and ecology of amphibians and curriculum and course development, including mulƟdisciplinary science, community-based research, and geneƟcs instrucƟon. In 2012-2013 he also received the Exemplary Teaching Award at Southwestern University from the Board of Higher EducaƟon and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. On a lighter note, the geneƟcs class at UMHB is currently using the textbook he authored — “GeneƟcs: A Conceptual Approach”.
Ecology and Natural History of the Georgetown Salamander, Eurycea naufragia
Abstract: The Georgetown salamander, Eurycea naufragia, is a springͲ and caveͲdwelling salamander that is known from only 15 sites in central Texas. Rapid urbanizaƟon throughout its range puts all known populaƟons at risk and the species is currently being considered for lisƟng under the Endangered Species Act. LiƩle is known about its natural history or ecology. Over the past six years, undergraduate students at Southwestern University and I have conducted ecological studies of the Georgetown salaͲ mander at two sites. Our results suggest that populaƟons of the salamander are relaƟvely small, that adults breed primarily in winter and early spring, and that movement of salamanders within a spring is limited. These studies provide basic ecological informaƟon that can be used to develop a longͲterm conservaͲ Ɵon plan for the species.
