LEADING THE WAY in preparing excellent nurses, the Scott & White College of Nursing provides real-world experiences built on a foundation of exceptional classroom training. Clinical labs, the newest technology, and a stateof-the-art hospital simulation area give our nursing students a decided advantage in their training to serve in a variety of health care contexts.
FRESHMAN SEMINAR is one of the unique ways UMHB ensures every student is pointed toward academic success. Students are grouped together with peers in their programs to practice the core academic skills necessary for college while also learning the ropes of campus life. From the outset, UMHB students learn to think critically, read effectively for real learning, and to engage their minds through discussion and writing.
DEMOS IN THE DARK takes chemistry out of the lab and into campus. Students engineer a series of controlled fires, explosions, and other experiments as a culmination of hands-on learning. And no one asks, “What use is any of this in real life?” when we serve up liquid nitrogen slushies after dazzling other students and children from the surrounding community.
Sarah has lived all over the U.S., and she visited and considered several large state schools and top-end private liberal arts colleges. “I plan on becoming a counselor, and what really sets UMHB apart for me is there isn’t one generic approach to teaching. Different professors have different styles— sometimes it’s the lectures and books and tests you anticipate, but sometimes they lead us in teambased styles of learning with lots of discussion and application-based learning. Our professors have the ability to know both their area of expertise and their students well and to adapt. For me, that means my academic experience is more directly engaged with the way my professional work will go one day.”

LUTHER MEMORIAL & BELL TOWER is a reminder of the UMHB legacy, paying tribute to Luther Hall, the first building on campus when UMHB moved from Independence, Texas, in 1886. Lots of important things happen here, including the ringing of the sophomore bell, the annual Easter Pageant, and the freshmen dubbing ceremony.
THERE’S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A CAMPUS TOUR.
BAWCOM STUDENT UNION The hub of campus life, Bawcom Student Union sets the standard for student-focused space, with lots of options for eating, the Campus Store, three floors of recreation and gathering spaces, and a great view inside Crusader Stadium.
Load the family SUV, grab mom and dad, and head to Belton where you’ll be treated like family. Get a tour of campus, meet with your admissions counselor, learn about financial aid, and see if UMHB is the right place for you. (And don’t leave town without getting some great Texas barbecue). We hope to see you on campus soon! Until then, visit umhb.edu/tour for a virtual tour.
The Parker Academic Center is home to the McLane College of Business and the College of Education. It includes modern classrooms, labs, offices, and gathering spaces.
The Christian Studies Center provides a unique space for religion classes and other events central to the spiritual life of the campus.
WALTON CHAPEL Twice a week we gather in W.W. Walton Chapel to re-center and reconnect. Walton also hosts fall and spring concerts, the Crusader Knights contest, and the Miss MHB Pageant.
MILLENNIUM OAKS PARK is a quiet refuge on campus that includes a pond, a gazebo, and a lighted trail for walking or running. QUAD The Quad is the beautiful heart of the UMHB campus. It not only offers a serene, open route through campus, but you’ll also find it a relaxing place to hang out, study, and just enjoy the sunshine.
MAYBORN CAMPUS CENTER The Frank and Sue Mayborn Campus Center offers another large student lounge, but the theme here is movement. It houses our exercise and fitness center, a five-lane swimming pool, a rec gym, Mayborn Arena, dressing rooms, and classrooms and labs for our health and physical education programs.
ISABELLE RUTHERFORD MEYER NURSING EDUCATION CENTER The new, state-of-the-art home for one of UMHB’s premier academic programs offers clinical labs, practice exam rooms, classrooms, and more. A unique hospital simulation area and innovative technology are part of the exceptional training for our nursing students.
Crusader Stadium is the home of the National Champion UMHB football team and seats over 7,500 fans for home games.
RESIDENCE LIFE Most UMHB students live in one of our seven residence halls or five apartmentstyle complexes on campus. Freshmen are clustered in the First Year Residential Experience program to acclimate to campus life. Later on, you’ll have the chance to move to one of the apartment complexes like Farris Hall, where apartments include a living room, a kitchen, and a laundry area, as well as private bedrooms and bathrooms.
BAUGH CENTER FOR VISUAL ARTS The Baugh Center for the Visual Arts is home to classrooms and studios for drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, as well as Mac labs and conference rooms for graphic design students. The Baugh Center also includes UMHB’s art gallery for displaying student work and other featured art.
The Intramural Field and tennis/volleyball courts are the “backyard” of the campus, where we play and compete in a host of traditional and made-up intramural sports.

WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT COLLEGE? I
n 10 years, what will you remember about your college experience? It may seem too soon to ask that question since that chapter hasn’t even started yet. But we think now is
the best time to ask what it will feel like to have an unforgettable experience—one that will shape who you are for the rest of your life. Our students say this again and again: “When I spent time here, I just knew I was home.” There’s something about the UMHB experience that is hard to describe, but it’s rooted in an atmosphere with the spirit and advantages of a big school in a familiar campus community. Your professors know your name, you see your friends every day,
Vonne: When I came to visit, it became clear that UMHB was home. And the longer I’m here, the more obvious it is that this is where I’m supposed to be. It’s hard not to have fun at UMHB, and the community I’ve experienced has changed my life.
but you’ll always have the opportunity to meet new people. You’re never lost in the crowd, never a number. But there is an uncommon energy that transcends a typical small school experience. This one is the experience of a lifetime.
MISS MHB A beauty pageant? Really? Well, yes and no. Yes, the Miss MHB pageant is a big deal, but no, it’s not your typical beauty pageant. It’s a unique event that is part performance, part advocacy,

INTRAMURALS Energy level: high. There are lots of ways to keep your body active alongside your mind, and intramurals and rec sports are some of the most fun. We play together and compete in all the best ways. Join or build your own team in all the usual sports—flag football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, and more—and in unique games like spikeball, dodgeball, or the Great Bed Race, a UMHB original.

WEL COME WEEK opportunity to immediately experience what real life will be
like in college. I feel like we come ready for an experience that
makes it clear we’re transitioning from high school to something bigger and better, and Welcome Week does that perfectly.”
Hailey arrived as a freshman from Arizona and didn’t know anyone in Texas, much less at UMHB. Welcome Week changed all of that. “To this day, all of my closest friends are people I met during Welcome Week. It just makes the transition from home to college so much easier. Everyone is in the same boat, and it takes this enormous weight off your shoulders before school even starts. You meet new people, have fun, and relax. But I also met professors who became my teachers, and they helped so much with the new academic challenges of college.”

Erin (middle) is a UMHB grad and a third grade teacher, but a few years ago she led Welcome Week on campus. “I am forever thankful for the opportunity I had to direct Welcome Week and to truly grow and learn real life skills that no textbook could have taught me. In my classroom, it is my job to effectively communicate with my students, parents, and coworkers. I have to manage my day down to the minute in the classroom, and I work with a team almost every day to collaborate on ideas. When I think about my work on Welcome Week, I realize that it helped me feel more confident and prepared in my job today.”

2016 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS The 2016 Crusader football team made history by winning the NCAA Division III National Championship. In a thrilling game decided by an interception with under a minute to play, UMHB sealed the top spot in the country. Hundreds of CRU fans who trekked over 1,200 miles cheered the team to its first national title.
Matt was a senior tight end on the national championship team, and his life was forever changed by his experience at UMHB. “I never thought I’d go to college—that wasn’t part of my plan. But God had different ideas, and UMHB was at the heart of His plan for my life. There is a spirit and a power on campus that just doesn’t compare to anywhere else. And yes, football was a big part of making me into the man I am. This team was committed to each other and to doing things the right way, and my teammates and coaches invested in me in ways that changed me. Obviously that paid off with a national championship, but it was bigger than winning games.”
“UP WITH THE PURPLE THE GOLD & THE WHITE” Turning out for Crusader athletic teams (the CRU) is one of the unifying traditions on campus, whether you’re a sports fan or not. It’s as much about UMHB spirit as anything else, and our teams bring us together over and over again.

FAITH IS OUR FOUNDATION, AND IT IS FIRM. Y
our college years should empower you to become the person you were created to be, not only academically and socially, but also spiritually. A
distinctly Christian approach to education and to life shapes every part of what we do at UMHB. For us, that’s about providing you endless opportunities to grow in your faith. To minister. To serve. To experience true community. To own your faith and find your way. Weekly chapel, regular worship gatherings, and campus groups like Baptist Student Ministries, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Cru for Life, and the Catholic Student Organization are central parts of the UMHB experience. Our students are involved in ministry on campus, in our community, across the nation, and around the world.
Sophie played Mary in the UMHB Easter Pageant, and it was a life-changing experience. “It is so different than anything I’ve ever participated in. I didn’t ever expect to do or enjoy something like this, but we get to physically put ourselves in the shoes of the people who knew and loved Jesus in person. Specifically playing Mary, I had never reflected on what it must have been like to go through what she did. Amazing experience. Simply amazing.”
REACHING OUT is a campus-wide missions opportunity for all UMHB students. “It’s a great chance to get into the community and make an impact,” Jon explains. “This year we took playhouses to families who really needed the help, and all of them were the families of veterans or of deployed soldiers. And like all of our ministries, real attention is paid to actual genuine personal growth. Service, yes, but also making sure you’re genuinely growing in your faith in Christ.”
REVIVAL WEEK Every year, we put up a big white tent on the quad and gather for Spring Revival.

We’re watching men and women grow into leaders who love God and people, ready to become healthy and productive in their communities and churches. IN SHORT: UMHB IS WORTH IT. There is no getting around the fact that college is more expensive than ever. The key is making sure every dollar you spend matters—that you aren’t just paying for a degree, but that you’re investing in an education that will carry you through life and an experience that will shape and propel you into your best future. We want you to be able to have that experience, which is why over 96% of UMHB freshmen receive financial assistance. “The financial aid opportunities were a major factor in Ryan selecting UMHB to continue his education. His academic honors in high school and selection as valedictorian of his class allowed Ryan to qualify for an academic scholarship through the university, and this was a huge financial burden lifted off our family. Without so much concern about how to pay for school, Ryan has been able to focus instead on the knowledge and skills passed on from his classes to prepare him for his career as an engineer. From the parent of a current student
