There’s a big mural near campus called “Michigan Wings.” Students love taking pictures in front of it. The wings are made up of a bunch of different Ann Arbor and U-M landmarks, like Burton Tower and the Michigan Union. I really like them because they remind me to think about why I’m here and where I’d like to go.

“Michigan Wings” was created by Kelsey Montague (@KelseyMontagueArt), an artist known internationally for her murals that invite audience participation.

you’ll love it here ...

where will your wings take you? Being a student at U-M unlocks a plethora of opportunities, no matter what year you’re in or what interests you have. There’s always a club, research lab, or class to ignite what could become a lifelong passion. Whether you’re completely undecided or firm in your major, there is a place for you to grow and explore new interests at Michigan. I ended up double majoring in history and women’s studies. I fell in love with the history department during my first semester. In women’s studies, I discovered an inspiring cohort of professors dedicated to social progress. I also had a little help along the way. The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts’ Honors Program was essential to my successful transition into college life. Having a tight-knit community from the first day on campus was comforting, and my peers and professors in the program are an amazing support system. This coming year, I’m excited to delve into my majors and begin thinking about my honors thesis. ESTRELLA SALGADO | Justice, IL History and Women’s Studies

Please note: Campus will be different this year. The images and copy included in this publication may not reflect what we hope are temporary changes due to COVID-19.

Where I come from, I have always been surrounded by thick forests and bodies of water. I love how North Campus has so many trees and natural areas. There’s also Fred’s Fountain and the Reflection Pool. Nichols Arboretum (The Arb) is nearby, too. It gives me a place to escape to when I need a place to unwind. It’s a little slice of home right here in Ann Arbor.

take flight Welcome to the University of Michigan, an exciting place filled with inspiration, opportunities, engaged minds, and a global campus community. discover your path As a first-generation student, U-M is giving me opportunities that I could only have dreamed of before. I grew up in an extremely rural area of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in a town that lacked diversity, so every day at Michigan has changed the way I see the world and other people. I love how I hear different languages spoken around me and how I am able to work, befriend, and learn from people of completely different identities and backgrounds than my own. I have also discovered that civil and environmental engineering allows me to explore the natural side of engineering while figuring out where human innovation fits into the ecosystems I care about deeply. It’s having this sense of community and passion for exploration that makes being a Wolverine such a unique and amazing experience for me. MAX LACOSSE | Rapid River, MI Civil Engineering

challenge yourself Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, because that is where the magic happens. Ann Arbor is a college town that fosters a strong link among students that would be challenging to find at other large city schools. The most important thing college students can do is surround themselves with smart, ambitious people who work together and encourage each other to strive for their best as they try new things — I think the University of Michigan is exactly that. Michigan is known for its passionate school spirit, and many would say that our loyalty and energy is unrivaled. Once you become part of the community, the Wolverine family will always be with you. JESSIE LI | Troy, MI Business

Picture yourself at Michigan #GoBlue

I am rather superstitious, so one of my favorite campus traditions is not stepping on the Block M that’s located in the middle of the Diag. Legend has it that if you do, you will fail your first blue book exam. If you watch for a while, you will see that a lot of people on campus walk around it. Most of them — other students, faculty, and staff — are well beyond their first blue book exam!

apply to U-M

admissions.umich.edu

All students must follow the same basic steps to apply to U-M (although there are variations for transfer and international students). First, fill out and submit the Common Application at commonapp.org or the Coalition Application at coalitionforcollegeaccess.org, as well as the University of Michigan Questions. Only one application is needed and no preference is given to either option. Your application for admission to U-M also serves as your application for most merit scholarships. The first-year application deadline is February 1, but consideration for admission depends on the space available in the individual school or college to which you apply. Submit your application as early as possible. We recommend applying by the Nov. 15 Early Action deadline (Dec. 1 for the School of Music, Theatre & Dance) to receive the most competitive merit scholarship consideration.

APPLICATION DEADLINES NOVEMBER 15: Early Action DECEMBER 1: School of Music, Theatre & Dance FEBRUARY 1: Regular Decision APPLICATION FEE WAIVERS We may be able to waive your application fee. Make a request on the application or call 734-764-7433 for details. U-M will waive all Common Application or Coalition Application filing fees for students who qualify as tribalenrolled American Indian or Alaska Native applicants (Tribal Enrollment Number required). Applicants should check “Other Fee Waiver Request” and “American Indian or Alaska Native Tribal Enrollee” in the UM-specific portion of the application.

apply for financial aid finaid.umich.edu Given our academic strengths, high student retention and graduation rates, and the strong lifetime earning potential of our graduates, investing in a U-M education offers a bright future with many rewards. Please do not hesitate to contact Admissions and the Office of Financial Aid for help or more information. We’re here to help you Go Blue! U-M uses the information provided on both the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile to determine your eligibility for need-based grants and scholarships. This will help you figure out the amount that you will need to pay for your education. If you apply by our suggested filing date of Dec. 15, you will receive a preliminary financial aid package as soon as possible. You can fill out your application on these websites: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): fafsa.ed.gov Complete the FAFSA online as soon as possible after Oct. 1 to be considered for all need-based and non-need-based federal loans and Work-Study opportunities, as well as federal and state need-based grants and scholarships. learn how affordable a world-class university can be

Many students and families across the country are concerned about the rising cost of college. We encourage you to explore all of your financial aid options — grants, scholarships, Work-Study, and loans — so you can pursue your dreams at Michigan. Most of our students are pleasantly surprised by how much support is available.

FOR MICHIGAN RESIDENTS admissions.umich.edu/affordability For many in-state undergraduate students, attending U-M costs less today than it did a decade ago. Our Go Blue Guarantee free tuition offer covers the full cost of tuition for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study on the Ann Arbor campus for Michigan residents with a family income of $65,000 or less and assets of $50,000 or less. Some families earning more also receive tuition assistance. We are the only public university in Michigan to cover 100% of demonstrated financial need of in-state students, making Michigan the lowest-cost option for them.

need-based aid especially, “ With U-M is so generous. That’s such a fantastic opportunity that I never thought would happen to me.

MICHAEL MCMAIN | Warren, MI Economics, Philosophy, and Mathematical Sciences

goblueguarantee.umich.edu 32

FOR NON-RESIDENTS At U-M, demonstrated financial need is covered for many non-resident students from low- and moderate-income families. Scholarships from U-M schools and colleges or private sources can help cover costs. Many families also consider the Direct PLUS Loan for parents of dependent undergraduates, or private loans. Visit our family profiles to see examples of how other U-M students are paying for college:

“ Michigan offered me a generous

financial aid package made up of scholarships and grants which solidified my decision to study here. The Work-Study program is amazing. There are so many opportunities that have helped me grow and learn, from being a tour guide to doing independent research.

ESTRELLA SALGADO | Justice, IL History and Women’s Studies admissions.umich.edu | 33

To me, nothing compares to going to a football game in The Big House, but honestly my other favorite place on campus is the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). Generally, my life is taken over by science, so I really enjoy taking a break and challenging my mind with seeing the beauty and creativity in the art there. It’s also just an amazing building, and it’s easy to find a sense of peace there.

you’ll love it here

find your community I’m a member of the club sailing team, but I’m also a tour guide and in the Honors program. It’s really easy to find your community at U-M. My first year I got really close to the students in my hall, but I also found friends through the organizations I joined and the classes I took. The sailing team is a really close-knit community, so that’s a pretty big part of my life here.

34

I also love the fact that I am surrounded by a diverse and passionate student body with a wide variety of interests at U-M. It challenges me to be better, learn new things, and become a more well-rounded individual. The people here help me explore a ton of new things and ideas that have made me a better person. The University of Michigan is located on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe people. In 1817, the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodewadami Nations made the largest single gift to the early university, when they ceded land through the Treaty at the Foot of the Rapids so that their children could be educated. Through these words of acknowledgment, their ancestral and contemporary ties to the land and their contributions to the university are renewed and reaffirmed.
