All-School Reunion 2012 set for Saturday, July 21, 2012 View a schedule of events on page ten, and find the registration form on page eleven. We invite you to return to Morris for a pleasant summer day of tours, reminiscing, and catching up with friends. While all alumni of the WCSA will be gathering, the classes of ’42, ’47, ’57, ’60, and ’62 have special events planned during the reunion, so we especially hope to see members of those classes on campus!

Higbies—bringing Caribou Coffee to an energized campus The University of Minnesota, Morris now boasts Caribou Coffee on campus! Higbies, opened in the Student Center in the fall of 2011, is an inviting space for students, faculty, staff, and the public to get a cup of classic Caribou Coffee, a variety of teas, or one of many specialty beverages. The establishment of Higbies on campus is the result of UMM negotiating an “upgrade” of dining facilities and options in its current contract with the dining services provider, Sodexo. Sodexo provided funding to build Higbies in conjunction with the remodeled information desk.

“Higbies dramatically changes the whole Student Center experience,” says David Swenson, director of student activities. “The welcoming aroma of brewing coffee and Higbies’ sophisticated appearance make a great first impression on visitors and prospective students, as well as providing a pleasant amenity for the campus community.”

Higbies is named in recognition of the West Central School of Agriculture’s first superintendent, E. C. Higbie. Higbie was noted for his humanistic approach in the study of education and development of pedagogy.

The connection to and respect for the land that was central to the WCSA’s mission is still celebrated at UMM with our commitment to furthering a sustainable education and way of life.

Weekday mornings find Higbies buzzing with students, especially during the times when numerous classes let out. Information Center workers have taken on the duties of crafting Caribou drinks with a smile.

Greetings from the Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving You have probably heard me say, on more than one occasion, that I enjoy working with “Aggies” on reunions or other projects because I admire the strong, almost familial bonds between them. Occasionally, I am asked by one or another of them if I can help them find a classmate who has been lost to them over the years. I am always happy to try to locate and contact the missing classmate regarding his or her friend’s inquiry, but it does happen that the person in question sometimes seems to have vanished. I mention this only to encourage all Aggies to always update their contact information with me if they move so that we don’t lose track of you.

We are busy planning for your return to campus this summer in July for the annual summer reunion.

Several special class reunions are being planned, including the classes of 1942, 1947, 1957, 1960, and 1962. Even if you aren’t a member of those classes, you are welcome to come back for the allschool summer reunion. For your convenience, a registration form is located on the last page of this issue and I encourage you to send it in.

The Student Center will again be the location for reunion day activities and I think you will enjoy seeing the new coffee bar, Higbie’s, that has been installed near Edson Auditorium. It’s a delightful nod to the history of the campus while dispensing coffee and treats in a sleek contemporary setting.

While on campus, I hope you will enjoy a stroll around the Mall and be sure to note the bronze plaques denoting the WCSA-era buildings; enjoy the beauty of the alumni garden; and visit the DeWall courtyard behind the Welcome Center (Engineering). These are all projects with a distinct WCSA footprint. The WCSA alumni board is again working with us on determining a suitable project for the second courtyard behind the Welcome Center.

University of Minnesota, Morris Happenings Campus accolades Forbes Morris ranked on Forbes magazine’s America’s Top Colleges and Best in the Midwest lists. The rankings are based on five general categories: post-graduate success, student satisfaction, debt, four-year graduation rate, and competitive awards. Morris also made The Forbes 100 Best Buy Colleges list, the only Minnesota college or university to make the list.

Kiplinger’s Kiplinger’s Personal Finance ranked Morris in the 100 Best Values in Public Colleges list. The Morris and Twin Cities campuses of the University of Minnesota were the only Minnesota institutions chosen for best value honors.

Prairie Gate Literary Festival The second annual Prairie Gate Literary Festival was held the weekend of March 29-31, 2012. The event celebrates literature through workshops, discussions, and readings that are diverse in subject, style, and medium. Guest authors were poets Ilya Kaminsky, Michael Dekel, and Simone Muench; graphic novelist team Anna Bratton and Brittney Sabo, creative non-fiction writer and musician Michael Perry, and fiction author Susan Power.

Jazz Fest The 34th annual Morris Jazz Festival made a splash the weekend of April 12–14, 2012. The West Central All-Stars, a festival favorite, opened the show. The Morris Jazz Fest offers young musicians the chance to work with and experience some of the most talented jazz performers in the country. Fans enjoy concerts by the Morris jazz ensembles and guest artists. Drummer Dennis Mackrel and saxophonist Gary Smulyan played alongside Morris’ Jazz Ensembles at the performances, and conducted Jazz Clinics during the day with invited high school and college students. Vocal jazz group Northern Colorado Voices added a fresh new sound to the musical palette this year. page 2

Greetings from the Alumni Association President It’s reunion time again, and I invite you to return to the campus, even if it is not your five year class year.

Full details of the events are carried elsewhere in this paper. We had a delightful time February 6 in Mesa, Arizona, when 79 people, 49 of them Aggies, gathered to reminisce about our years at ‘the Ag School.’

Those who have never lived at a boarding school, like WCSA, can’t realize how close we got to each other, and the mischief some of us got into. It is an experience none of us would forego, and most wish our children and grandchildren could experience the same. We also agreed that for those of us who served in the military had an easier time than those who had never lived together, such as we did at WCSA. I also hear the reunion in Texas went well, and everyone there enjoyed the day.

The Alumni Board meets in June, and if you’d like to add a comment about what the Alumni Association should do, contact Carla Riley.

Among the discussions will be what to do with the area behind the Welcome Center, which we know as the Engineering Building. A sculpture garden has been mentioned, along with lots of other ideas, but nothing has been decided.

Welcome Center rated Gold The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating to the Welcome Center (Engineering building).

LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED certification offers third-party validation of a project’s green features and verifies that the building is operating the way it was designed.

LEED certification is a system in which building projects earn points for satisfying specific green building criteria. Within each LEED credit category a building project must satisfy particular prerequisites to earn points. Categories include Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality.

An additional category, Innovation in Design, addresses sustainable building expertise and design.

A LEED Gold rating project needs to earn between 60 and 79 points out of 100. The Welcome Center earned credits in areas such as water efficient landscaping, water use reduction, optimal energy performance, site selection, building reuse, recycled content, and innovation in design.

In addition to the LEED Gold rating, the Welcome Center has previously been awarded the 2011 Preservation Alliance of Minnesota’s Sustainable Design Award and the 2011 Minnesota Construction Association Award.

Originally built in 1915, the Welcome Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its renovation was completed in February 2010.

Class News Wesley Anderson ’37, Dawson, passed away in September 2011. He is survived by his wife Myrtle and three children.

Genevieve C. Nielsen Dosdall ’41, Hancock, died in January 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband Glen and son Larry. She is survived by four children, ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Julia Van Oterloo Bouma ’37, Hancock, passed away in April 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond. She is survived by her three daughters, one son, 11 grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren. She and Raymond farmed near Hancock. She worked as a receptionist for Dr. Eide’s office in Hancock, and at the Morris Medical Center until her retirement in 1986.

Ada Koons ’42, Brainerd, passed away in February 2012. Ada worked as a nurse’s assistant and nurse. She is the aunt of Jim and Gladys Henricks, former WCSA staff member.

Eldon A. Peterson, ’43, Granite Falls, passed away on August 14, 2011. Survivors include wife of 65 years Betty Kennel Peterson ’42, two sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Maurice Underwood ’38, San Diego, California, passed away in September 2011.

Lloyd A. Brandt ’39, Donnelly, died in February 2012.

He was retired from the University of Minnesota, Morris, where he worked as a custodian. He served as a Sunday school teacher at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, where he sang with the men’s quartet and the choir. He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma.

Glenn L. Bennett ’44, Lowry, passed away in October 2011. He milked Holstein cows until 1975 and farmed until just a few years ago. He is survived by his five children and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Elaine in 1996.

Harold W. Fahl ’45, Morris, died in December 2011.

After he graduated from WCSA he attended Gustavus Adolphus College and North Dakota State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering. He served for 25 years as superintendent of plant services at the University of Minnesota, Morris, retiring in 1993. He is survived by his wife Marion Wilberg Fahl ’47, two children, and two grandchildren.

UMM. She reported on the strides made in the areas of ecology, future development, resources, and progress.

She also spoke of the University’s mission and needs for its up and coming young minds in order to achieve their potential and goals. Michela Brevig, granddaughter of Andrew Brevig ’47, will attend the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities this fall in engineering.”

Orval Cawelti ’51 passed away in January 2012. He is survived by two daughters, his sister Ardith Sehldon, and sister-in-law Arabelle Cawelti. He was predeceased by brother Leon Cawelti ’45.

Jerry Ricks ’45 writes, “I am getting so old even my grand kids are getting old—but the wife and I are in good health. Greetings to all my former classmates and would love to get together again. We have retired in Alexandria—if you’re in town give us a shout—we are in the phone book. To all: good luck, and God bless.”

Arthur Bailey ’48, Alexandria, died in December 2011. Art served in the Korean War before returning to farm. He also helped start a drainage contracting company known as MBC Drainage. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha and is survived by two children and four grandchildren.

Arloa Zahrbock Knutson Larson ’48 went on a cruise to the Caribbean in March. She writes that she and her husband were joined by Vivian and Howard Janssen.

Ruth Brevig West ’49 Fort Myers, Florida, reports that “Mr. and Mrs. Omar Metaweh attended the alumni dinner hosted by Chancellor Jacqueline Johnson of

Dave Schmit ’51, writes, “My wife Chris and I are now Arizona residents living in Scottsdale. We have a home in the north part of the city, near the McDowell Mountains, which we love. This past November we sold our townhome in Minnesota. We still plan on spending some summer months there visiting family. I still work part time selling floor covering for a company called Direct Carpet One Floor and Home. I also play some golf. We can be reached at 480-563-1136 or my cell 480-529-9685.”

Don Glimsdal ’54 lives in Saint Peter with wife Jan. He is active as an on site volunteer building supervisor for the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. He writes, “Our small chapter is able to build one house a year from foundation to completion.”

Report from the field: Loren Shoquist ’55 Loren sends this report: Who would have thought this shy young farm boy would one day travel the world representing the Gideons International distributing Scriptures?

After graduating from WCSA I went on to graduate from college. I spent many years in the insurance business, but it was also during this time that God called me into the ministry of the Gideons International. That was 34 years ago.

It has been during the past nine years that I have served on an international level. During this time I have had the opportunity to represent the Gideons in 20 different countries (30 trips) in the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. I typically travel by myself and rely on the local Gideons in their respective countries to transport me to the different locations. At the writing of this article I am making preparations for my trip to Cambodia.

Gordie Swanson ’56 writes, “I have finished my second and last Bearman book. It’s the last because I have told everything I can tell. The name of the book is Bearman, the rest of the story. Again I painted the cover for it, and a friend of mine, Charles Denault, who is a very successful wildlife artist painted the back cover. Right now the editor has it, and when she is done it gets printed fast!”

Connie Lundstrom, wife of Reverend Lowell O. Lundstrom ’57, died in December 2011. Connie was cofounder of Lowell Lundstrom Ministries and Celebration Church.

Jerry Koosman ’60, UMM ’64 was featured in the film “Kooz,” the story of his highlight career season with the 1969 New York Mets, and later life.

Dave Mecklenburg ’61 wishes to thank his classmates from the Class of 1961 for the thoughts and prayers extended to him and his family upon the passing of his wife, Marjorie, who passed away last summer after losing her battle with cancer. Patricia Lesmeister Nelson ’61 and all WCSA alumni join in extending their sympathies to Dave and his family.

Gary W. Dehne, DVM ’62 writes “I live in Washington, DC. I’m a veterinarian. After graduation, I went to David Anderson, ’57, Litchfield, passed away in College of Veterinary Medicine, served in the army, February 2012. He is predeceased by wife Linda. ended up in the Washington, DC area, and never made it back home. My goal in life has been to have fun. I’m Virgil Nielsen ’57, Lake Benton, died in March 2012. pleased to announce that it’s pretty much worked out.

Carol Pederson Meyer ’60 writes that she continues to enjoy an active retirement with volunteer activities and family. She has worked the past six years at a free Tax Clinic for low income families and finds it most interesting and the majority of the time rewarding. She enjoys following the second generation of swimmers in her family and is planning a trip to Omaha, Nebraska to watch her grandson compete in the Olympic Trials in Dorm living NOW! Remembering Harriet Vaala Payne, WCSA Class of 1960 Many of you know the alumni garden as a beautiful and favored spot for many on the Morris campus. It freely exudes a lovely calming presence to anyone who passes by. In much the same way, I remember Harriet Payne, who used to help plant that garden each spring. Harriet lost her life in an automobile accident on November 17, 2011, but her warm and beautiful spirit, which she freely shared with everyone, will never be forgotten.

I worked with Harriet for many years as she held a seat on the WCSA Alumni Board of Directors. Harriet had a quiet disposition, but according to her husband Tom ’60, that was a bit deceiving as she had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. Tom also told me that Harriet had a lot of common sense, and while she respected other people’s opinions, she also maintained a strong sense of her own values and views.

In my working with her, Harriet never disappointed me on any level.

Her generosity of spirit meant that she would never not do what she said she would do, and she said she would do a lot! Even after her term on the board ended, she continued to help with garden planting and remained active in the alumni association. Harriet’s life was full of service to others. She was an active member of Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church in Grace Township and Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo. She was also an active member of the Flying Geese Quilting Club, Minnesota Valley Community Concert Association Board of Directors, and Chippewa Valley Cruisers Car Club. She served as a 4-H Leader, fair judge, and election judge. She volunteered at Luther Haven, Ag in the Classroom, and at the Women’s Activity Building at the Chippewa County Fair. She was also a member of the Flying Farmers, serving as a chapter officer and queen.

Harriet and Tom celebrated 50 years of marriage on September 30, 2011. Together they raised three children, Chad, Byron and Jan. Harriet was adored by eight grandchildren: Jenna, Brennan, Devon, Tatum, Tommy, Gavin, Samantha, and Alice. All who knew her benefited from her loving care and support as many of her hobbies and interests, such as sewing and baking, involved service to others. Dancing at the Lakeside Dance Club was also a favored activity for Harriet.

If you look up Harriet Vaala in the 1960 Moccasin, you will note that her nickname was “Cooky.” Sweetly appropriate. You will also note that it says “She looks like an angel; you can never tell what angels will do.” I hope Harriet is dancing today with the other angels in heaven until Tom can one day be her partner again.

Harriet lived a good and joyful life and we can all look to her as a model for our own living.

Class announcements for All-School Reunion Class of 1962—50th Reunion The class of 1962 is planning its 50th year reunion to coincide with the All-School Reunion on the weekend of July 21–22, 2012. All-School Reunion parking and free shuttle service

2012 All-School Reunion Tentative Schedule of Events

During the All-School Reunion, complimentary golf cart shuttle service will be provided from the North and West Lots on the University of Minnesota, Morris campus to the Student Center where the 2011 All-School Reunion will be held. All parking is free on the Morris campus during the reunion.

RV Parking RVs may be parked at Pomme de Terre Park on a firstcome, first-served basis. Prices are $15 per night without electricity and $20 per night with electricity. Bathrooms and water, but no water hookups available. Please register at the registration stand in the park.

Free parking for self-contained recreational vehicles is available in all of the University of Minnesota, Morris campus parking lots. The East Lot has the most shade and is the largest, quietest area. No water or electrical hookups are available.

On-campus Apartments On-campus apartments, which sleep four, are available at $50 per night. Linens will be provided free or you may bring your own. It is recommended that you bring a fan.
