Communication: let’s start with that We need to enhance our ability of getting a point across clearly. To articulate well is a skill imperative to career growth

What’s the most obvious thing a recruiter looks for? What matters most, despite a list of qualifications and impressive achievements? What comes across without even looking at a CV? Even as other skills (talent, ability, etc.,) are of course important, they take a seat behind communication. Look around among your peers, your colleagues, friends even, and try to narrow in on five excellent communicators who inspire you. Chances are that this is tough. It takes effort to become a good communicator but you can get there. Warren Buffett values communication skills higher than an MBA degree. Career counsellors, HR people, deans at top MBA institutes, all talk about communication skills being intertwined with leadership qualities. Employers look for this as effective communication is essential to the flow of work. When people talk and understand each other, it enables teams to work in concert. It’s a skill that never falls out of demand, regardless of futuristic workplaces and the advances of technology. What does it mean to communicate? You say something with the purpose of being understood, for your words to convey meaning. But if the person you’re speaking to looks confused, the purpose hasn’t been met. Your communication has failed. What went wrong? When you analyse this most-desiredattribute in employees, communication comes down to a bundle of skills: articulation, clarity of mind, saying something effectively, with confidence, and then enacting that

clear brief to facilitate progress. Muddled thoughts, unclear briefs, and a lack of communication are hazardous in not just the work sphere. All human interactions are premised on successful communication. Forming a thought properly in your head takes mental discipline that, like everything, is bettered with practice. Wide reading, selfawareness, reflection, checking yourself to remove redundant speech patterns, clichés of thought and speech are necessary to become a good communicator. All of us have conversations everyday, and all of us need to work on getting our point across clearly. Knowing your mind, i.e., knowing what to say, and saying it clearly, enunciating audibly, coherently are the foundation of any successful dialogue and exchange of ideas. This is crucial to grow and to flourish, so you may as well work on enhancing this skill, not least of all because an employer will notice it. ● Staff Writer

What families, forests, and cars have in common

Everything is connected and the world will benefit if Systems Thinking is taught from an early age

â—? Staff Writer

A man called Peter Senge nails it when he said, “It’s a crumby word, it’s a nonevocative word”. He was talking about his lifelong obsession with systems thinking. Families, cars, forests, the human body; all operate on the basis of systems thinking, which is nothing but stepping back and seeing an interconnected whole. “Even before I got to MIT as an undergraduate,” Senge said, “I studied engineering because it was a good way to learn about systems…” In his seventies, Senge is the founding chair of the Society for Organizational Learning, a senior lecturer at MIT, and the author of the classic text, The Fifth Discipline. He gets into the two colloquial meanings of the term system. “One is often when people express helplessness: ‘Hey, it’s not my fault, it’s the stupid system!’ The other common one is to refer to technology, as in, ‘Hey we got a problem, we need a systems expert to fix it’. None of which talks about systems thinking or systems understanding or particularly, systems education.” Systems Thinking, Senge says, really is about interdependence, how we embrace the extraordinary level of interconnectedness or interdependence that exists among the living. A forest is imponderable. No one can tell you how a forest works. It’s a profoundly complex system. Consider what another giant in the field Russell Ackoff had to say. The late American organisational theorist has two points of view at the core of his belief in systems thinking. One, he said, you can’t improve the performance of the parts of a system taken separately and assume that that will necessarily improve the performance of the whole. Think of a car. He writes [1*] that, “Doing so can destroy an organisation, as is apparent in an example I have used ad nauseum: Installing a Rolls Royce engine in a Hyundai can make it inoperable. This explains why benchmarking has almost always failed.”

Two, he says, problems are not disciplinary in nature. He gives a great example in one of his talks about someone being faced with a problem of a slow elevator in an office building, that was testing the patience of employees, who had to wait for nearly three minutes after pressing the call button. How could these complaints be dealt with? The company consulted experts. An architect had a different solution than the engineer, who had a different solution from the electrician, and so on. But the best, simplest solution came from a kid not limited by thinking in terms of only one discipline. He figured it wasn’t a mechanical problem or a design flaw, and that employees were just bored waiting for the elevator. The problem would dissolve if mirrors were placed in waiting areas in front of the elevator so that people, in the time it took for the elevator to arrive, could look at themselves and others in the reflection. Time wouldn’t crawl, and the mirrors would cost a fraction of the estimate for upgrading elevators. This is what Ackoff meant when he said, “Effective research is not disciplinary, interdisciplinary, or multidisciplinary; it is transdisciplinary. Systems thinking is holistic; it attempts to derive understanding of parts from the behaviour and properties of wholes, rather than derive the behaviour and properties of wholes from those of their parts. Disciplines do not constitute different parts of reality; they are different aspects of reality. The whole can be understood only by viewing it from all the perspectives simultaneously.” These organisational theories are grasped even by 6-year-olds. If they’re taught it in schools, it would shape their approach to life. It’s important to think of the benefits of operating within a framework of systems thinking, teaching the future workforce to look at things from all angles, not just magnify one component of an issue. Coming back to Senge, in one of his

talks on ‘Systems Thinking in a Digital World’ [2*], he says something that most of us can agree with. “Family is often quite puzzling and difficult dynamic of a human or social system.” One of the most interesting fields in the last 20-30 years, he says, is Systems Family Therapy or Structural Family Therapy, which basically means, instead of looking at a problematic teenager, look at the larger momand-dad system, and how everyone reacts. It’s about embracing interdependence at all levels. Our lives have a huge interconnectedness with the rest of the world. Senge illustrates the systems worldview with an example of how our actions affect the planet. “Travel in northern India, you’ll see the river systems are dry all year around. Why is that? Didn’t used to be. Big canals don’t have water any time of the year. It’s important to think about this. All those river systems originate in the Himalayas, the Tibetan plateau. As the glaciers contract, the river systems become smaller. Why are those glaciers contracting? Global warming, yes, and why is that

happening? Because of burning coal.” He goes on to explain what coal has to do our cell phones. “You’re charging your sophisticated fancy devices. But the most common source of fuel for charging is coal. We don’t look at the whole system, we look at a small piece closest to us. How much of all our electricity is used to work all our devices, the internet? What is the electricity footprint of the internet? We spend much more money in terms of energy and fossil fuels to power our gadgets than to power our homes, and it’s growing much more rapidly. And that’s what it means to look at the entire system.” Senge went on to explain, “One more way the wealthy are imposing themselves on the poor. Who has dry river beds? It’s the 150 chronically dehydrated people. Northern India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and this causes social turmoil… how can we not think this is not relevant for education? It makes a big impact on how our society works. Water is the most acute problem in the world. By the year 2030, China and India will be unable to meet 50 percent of their water needs, according to figures provided by the World Health Organisation. It makes sense to train students early on to view the world through the complete lens. We’ve got to integrate approaches, not box disciplines, and keep them sequestered. As Senge says, it’s how we live that is the problem, not our innate capabilities.

◼ Q&A

The big college questions How to choose a course, a school, and the big one, a career

Ambuj Khare is the founder of ProEd DMCC, a career counselling organisation in Dubai. He spoke to us about what students need to bear in mind while selecting a college. Excerpts from a chat…

How much have things changed from the time when Indian/South Asian parents wanted their kids to become doctors, lawyers, engineers? Yes, the notion earlier was to opt for lucrative careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), but over the past few years, the Humanities stream has gained popularity. Universities now focus on developing students’ personality, both in and outside the classroom. This gives students a competitive advantage by the time they enter the workforce. And as far as careers go, are south Asian parents more open today if their kids want to study art or design or film? Yes, and parents even encourage them to gain experience in these areas before applying to universities. Over the past couple of years, we have worked with many Indian students to build their portfolios, assisting them in applying to schools such as University of the Arts London, The Arts School of Chicago, Parsons School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design, among others. When a student is unsure of what he or she wants to study, do you

recommend a gap year? How comfortable are parents with the idea? Yes, in some cases, a gap year is the best option. Students who take a year travel or take up internships or courses that provide them with exposure they may not have got in high school. Parents used to think that a gap year was detrimental to their children’s future. Now they are more open because they can see the benefits it has on students and on their profiles when they apply to schools. What should students consider when looking at college rankings? It’s important that students look not only at overall university rankings, but program rankings as well. Some colleges may not be well-ranked in national university rankings, but are top ranked in particular programs. Students should also do their research on class size, study environment, and extracurricular activities outside the classroom. This helps a smooth transition period. What are your thoughts on jobs of the future? We are moving to a future where jobs are getting automated to reduce costs. However, machines do not possess creativity, personalised domain expertise, and other knowledge required to solve production problems. The future is going to be about skills that cannot be replicated by a machine: social skills, communication skills, social and emotional intelligence. Workers will also have to be adaptable and develop new skills as the job economy changes.

The old approach is not relevant in today’s classrooms Students are now taught differently from the chalk-and-duster era of the past. This is good news There was a time when memorisation played a big role in classrooms. A lesson was read out by the teacher and students had to pay attention and focus on recitation: repeating after the teacher. Understanding and absorbing the lesson taught were of little value. Preferences were never meant to be factored, and students had no choice but to memorise what was taught that day in

class. Homework was a chore. A student’s aptitude was rarely considered. The focus was report-card driven. Getting high marks was the goal. The old ways were anti-creative, a deterrent to curious, gifted minds. Teachers could get away with boring an entire generation of student

The focus used to be on “finishing the syllabus”, not improving a student’s understanding or nurturing his thirst for knowledge. Application, integration, engagement, interaction — these were unheard-of concepts

and permanently put them off learning. Think of the damning, far-reaching effects of this previous reality—unless you were lucky to have a few good teachers and were spared this fate. Unlike today, educators of the past, in the pre internet era, were not terribly concerned about the real world application of lessons taught in the classroom. It was of no concern that a chapter in a textbook bore no relation to the outside world. The focus was on “finishing the syllabus”, not improving the curriculum to enhance a student’s understanding or to nurture his thirst for knowledge, and hone his skills. Application, integration, engagement, interaction — these were yet unheard of concepts. For a long time, the fact that the staid

approach never worked didn’t bother educators, parents, students. Perhaps they knew no better. This was the norm. Students were bored and uninterested in the subjects for how they were taught. If you are over a certain age, you might be familiar with this blinkered approach to learning. The high cost of it is easy to glean. The damage it does to young minds when it turns them away, however inadvertently, from the pursuit of knowledge is immense and not easy to fix later in life. Think back to your time as a student. See if you remember any lesson that you were supposed to ‘mug up’, or learn by rote. If you can recall instances of having participated in a lively exchange of ideas in a classroom, consider yourself in a lucky minority. Was there much studentteacher participation in your time? How about a flow of feedback? All vital aspects to impart healthy well-rounded learning, and unfortunately, the absence of these comes at a high cost to the future labour force. Today, much has changed. The approach to education has been overhauled. A comparison between older methods of teaching and practices of today are

different in several regards: the methods of teaching, the syllabus that is taught, the parameters of assessment, even the physical environment of students is vastly different from just a decades ago, and in more ways that not, this is progress. Earlier, it was the norm for a student to struggle because the syllabus wasn’t integrated. Social sciences and history would have no common ground, a vastly different syllabus. Today, there is a focus on real world skills: creativity, time management, problem solving and critical thinking — concepts that were nowhere on the scene earlier. Today, there is an emphasis on the STEAM approach: integrating science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in one discipline. Assessment is project-based, and students are graded on their level of engagement. Computers have taken the place of blackboards. We live in a world of robotic teaching assistants. It’s no exaggeration to say that everything has changed. Assignments are uploaded. Students have the benefit of group study, workshops, teamwork and exchange of ideas. In Denmark, students can access the internet during exams, any site they like, including Facebook (no messaging or emails though). In the US, learning has become so personalised, students create their own schedules. South Korea has introduced digital textbooks so that students can learn anywhere. In Australia, kids are enabled with internships during school to get a broader real-world experience. All this is primarily to equip students with skills that are actually useful and in demand: communication, problem-solving, creativity, flexibility, and so on. Students graduating from high school today are hyper-connected. They need these skills. They leave school with of thousands of friends on social media and enter a world with diminishing resources. It is a good thing that the old ways of rote learning are left behind in the past. One aspect of old-school learning that should not be done away with is actual student-teacher interaction time, human contact. Computers may have entered the classroom, but they are no substitute for the guidance of a good, kind, competent trained professional who is invested in students’ futures and works to equip these kids with the sensibilities and skills that most needed to stay relevant and employable in the future. Let’s concentrate on the several beneficial advances of technology, but let’s keep the few aspects that were good about past methods, the human touch, to ready kids for the job market in the 21st century.

The MBA: making the right choice

The MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree is a general management qualification that equips students for a career in business management, helping them acquire broad perspectives across a wide range of areas that they need to understand in order to lead and operate effectively at a senior level. The MBA is highly valued by business people, entrepreneurs, and employers/recruiters.

● By Randa Bessiso - Director, Middle East of The University of Manchester Middle East Centre

The business world, the workplace and the nature of work are all changing at an amazing speed. As digital business transformation is now a necessity and a reality, business education has to embrace the transformations taking place, and make sense of the strategic management implications and challenges. But all of the business management processes are still applicable, even within a digital business environment — management and leadership, talent management, ICT, finance, operations, marketing and sales — as well as the corporate governance and ethical framework required to protect reputation and investors. The MBA remains the pre-eminent business qualification but it is changing to meet the changing nature of business. The three notable trends are the greater personalisation of content; shorter programmes attracting younger students and helping graduates achieve faster ROI; and a greater emphasis on entrepreneurial and soft skills to meet the increasing need to be agile in the face of industry transformation and disruption. Business education providers also have to respond to the demands of a younger ‘digital native’ population of students who expect learning to reflect their digital view and experience of the world around us. Who needs an MBA? The Middle East region will require additional skills and access to talent, and the leadership skills that successful digital transformation and rapid diversification of the economy will require. Talent comes in different forms and there is no doubt that soft skills are increasingly valued by business and these skills are easily transferable across industries — and not easily automated. LinkedIn Learning identified the soft skills companies need most in 2019, in which 57% of senior leaders said soft skills were more important than hard skills - especially Creativity, Persuasion, Collaboration, Adaptability, and Time Management.

The business world is transforming rapidly and the MBA programme helps students understand these fundamental shifts. Students benefit from new knowledge, tools and skills, career support and a professional network of contacts — all essential to maintaining long-term sustainable employability. Student motivations for studying an MBA vary from person to person but there is some common ground. In many multinational organisations, the MBA may be viewed as a pre-requisite for a career in senior management and providing candidates with a set of tools that makes them more effective in their roles while accelerating their careers. For other prospective students, the trigger may be a plan to switch careers, start a company, or move from a specialist role to general management. Today, there is a growing choice of MBA options in the region and candidates should look for the best fit in terms of programme content, opportunities to personalise and learning format. Choosing an MBA programme The MBA covers all the core functions of business and so the skills and tools are equally applicable to c-level executives and managers, heads of specialist functions in large enterprises, SMEs and entrepreneurs looking to start-up a new venture. Students can also further personalise the MBA programme with a range of electives to suit specific goals and interests. Choosing an MBA is a very personal decision but it should start with research - building an initial shortlist of candidate schools based on reputation and ranking

16

(the Financial Times annual MBA ranking, for example) and accreditation (triple MBA ranking is the gold standard) is a good start. Prospective students may also want to look at global rankings for return on investment in various MBA programmes. Following this, candidates should look for the programmes that best suit their personal situations, learning objectives and interests — subjects, study formats (full-time or parttime/blended learning) amount of face to face contact time with peers and faculty, international network and exposure, alumni network, careers support, entry criteria and cost. Many business programmes are becoming more modular and flexible, offering a greater degree of personalisation and specialisation to meet specific learning objectives — for example through a range of elective courses. It is not just about customised content but also about content delivery. It is no coincidence that business education providers are delivering learning through channels and in a flexible format that reflects global business, with learners working remotely in self-study mode online, liaising and collaborating with fellow students through social and other media, and then spending short bursts of intense face to face study time with faculty and peers, while continuing to work and earn. This is the reality of working life for many young and mid-career executives today. The next stage is to go and meet the shortlisted schools — and students and alumni, if possible — for deeper insights into the learning and student experience, as well as different perspectives on the teaching styles, calibre of student peers, and careers support services. Sustainable employability The essential key for business educators is staying relevant and ahead of the wave of transformations that will no doubt continue to be a feature of business in the region, into the future. MBA content is having to be updated to reflect these rapid technological, social and workplace changes, with IOT, AI and Blockchain all part of an increasing

“The essential key for business educators is staying relevant and ahead of the wave of transformations that will no doubt continue to be a feature of business in the region, into the future.” technology emphasis in business education. Students can now choose to add electives on Big Data Analytics, Digital Marketing Strategy, Information Systems and Digital Strategy, Managing Disruptive Technologies, and the Digital Economy to their core MBA subjects. Students can develop their skills through consultancy style MBA projects rather than class based exercises, so this more closely mirrors the real business world. This also helps to build the soft skills and the confidence required to build a successful and sustainable career in business. The deeper trend in business education is lifelong learning as people need to refresh and learn skills constantly to maintain their employability. Business executives continue to return to the classroom and not just for the digital view of business, strategy and management, but also with an interest in building portfolio careers. At the heart of this is sustainable employability and the need to develop and sustain the transferable skills for the 21st century and a rapidly changing world. Ultimately, business people only study for an MBA once in their lives and so prospective students should choose the best school and programme available to them — it should prove to be a career- and life-transforming experience and a very good investment, whether you’re kick-starting a career or a new business startup.

◼ PROFILE

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi With stunning architecture and a rich history dating back to the 13th century, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is a multidisciplinary university that attracts high-calibre students from the UAE and around the world. Established in 2006, our state-of-theart campus operates under the academic leadership of Sorbonne University in Paris awarding degrees in the arts, humanities, sciences, law, management and economics. Following the ECTS system, all of our graduates receive globally certified French degrees accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education. To date, we have produced over 1700 graduates from more than 90 countries while forging a reputation for academic excellence and innovation. To ensure quality, we maintain small classes, enabling us to tailor our teaching methods to individual styles of learning. We also bring our faculty from Sorbonne Université in Paris, guaranteeing the same quality teaching present in our parent institution. In addition, our admissions process is highly selective, ensuring that individual talent benefits from collective excellence. With 10 bachelor programmes taught in French (except for our BA in Physics) and 12 master degrees taught in English (except for the Master in Teaching French as a Foreign Language), Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is also home to the Continuing

& Executive Education Department (CEED) for working professionals. Through a series of certificates and diplomas, the CEED provides lifelong learning programmes for professionals wishing to acquire new vocational skills. In support of the UAE’s vision of a knowledge-based economy, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi grants scholarships to students from all nationalities. Emirati students are eligible to apply for a scholarship towards their undergraduate fees for all three years of study, plus foundation years where applicable, following a grant by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. We have also introduced a new scholarship programme for the 2019-2020 academic year for international students, residents and non-residents of the UAE who wish to undertake our Diploma in Intensive French. Prof. Eric Fouache, Executive Director Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, said: “A degree from Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is much more than an academic achievement. It’s the culmination of a journey where students are continuously encouraged to think outside the norm and contribute to society as a whole. We equip our students with the knowledge and tools required to succeed in their chosen career paths, and contribute towards the UAE’s knowledge-based economy.”

◼ PROFILE

University of Strathclyde One of the oldest, largest and most respected business schools in the UK, the University of Strathclyde Business School has consistently been ranked in the top 10 B-schools in the UK in terms of both research and teaching quality. Strathclyde Business School is one of an elite group of business schools which hold triple international accreditation (AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB), and the Strathclyde MBA programme is also accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (CAA). Throughout the course of its history, Strathclyde Business School’s pioneering and innovative outlook has led to a number of firsts including being the first UK B-school to offer a one year full-time MBA programme in 1966, and the first to offer a part-time MBA programme at its international centres (launched in SouthEast Asia in 1988). The Strathclyde Executive MBA is offered at seven international centres; Dubai, Oman, Bahrain, Singapore, Malaysia, Greece and Switzerland and is taught part time over two years. With the exception of the mode of study, it is identical to the full-time MBA in the UK – the same entry criteria, programme content, assessment and core learning materials, and it is taught by the same Strathclyde academics who teach in Glasgow. Teaching and learning is highly experiential

and based on collaboration and teamwork. Through class discussions, presentations and group assignments, students share their varied work experiences, knowledge, understanding and skills.” A particular strength of the programme is strategic management with three interrelated courses that culminate in a three-day Strategic Consulting in Practice workshop, where students undertake a real-life strategy assignment for a client. Entrepreneurship is also in focus, with a core course on Entrepreneurial Management and Leadership and elective options, such as New Venture Creation, providing the essential skills to enhance the abilities of people working for themselves or about to set up in business. There are also options for international study. With a wide range of specialist departments in the business school, Strathclyde offers over 20 different electives, and students can opt to take elective subjects at the Summer School in Glasgow or at any of the school’s international centres. The Strathclyde MBA is a generalist MBA and students can expect to graduate with a broad understanding of the fundamentals of business and management issues, advanced management skills and techniques, selfawareness as a manager and leader and with increased confidence in all areas of business.

It may give you an edge, but an MBA doesn’t make you invincible An MBA opens doors and can boost your career, but you’ve got to keep learning 32

Most people agree that an MBA gives you a certain advantage in life, a bargaining chip, better prospects, an upper hand in an organisation. But the advantage shrinks when everyone else has one too. The edge gets lost. So is an MBA really beneficial? How so? Flip through these pages and you will find representatives of prestigious institutes in the Middle East talking about the many ways in which an MBA helps careers get that extra push. But let’s also consider voices from beyond the Gulf. There are lots of benefits of getting a business education, according to Thomas Cooley, former Dean of NYU Stern School of Business and Paganelli Bull Professor of Economics. “But typically, people choose to get an MBA for that extra boost to their career. Not only does it give specific skills in areas of finance and accounting, but it also teaches broader perspectives on leadership and managing organisations and those sorts of things”. Even though he said this years ago (there’s a clip dated 2012 on the YouTube channel

BigThink), it’s still pertinent. “A business education is not about a vocation,” he believes. “It’s about developing the ability to think analytically, historically, ethically, more than what you would get from an apprenticeship model. The best MBA programmes offer broader perspectives about the place of business in society. MBA grads, he says, are “enriched by being educated at places where new knowledge is being created.” The best MBA programmes, he says, combine research and academic focus with real world experience. In his books, an MBA is still a good investment as returns on human capital are “very, very high”. Another pro-MBA voice is the dean of Wharton, Geoffrey Garrett, who talks of the “amazing range of innovation and entrepreneurship activities” they have on campus. The host of a show on CNN asked Garrett in 2015 about the value on an MBA in the

prevailing economy, and if it was worth as need to keep enrolling for courses, putting in much as a decade ago. Garrett was confident those extra hours, after work, on weekends about the proof being in the pudding.
