Artificial Intelligence Key to Thrive in a Disruptive World The students at the university level are opting for courses that provides them with AI knowledge to pursue career in new areas With the emergence of new technologies, the social and economic landscapes are changing dramatically. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come up as one of the most disrupting technology in today’s world that is transforming our professional and consumer lives forever beyond doubt. AI is integrated into our everyday lives with AI assistants like Siri, Alexa, Cortana and Google AI Assistant powering the popular applications that are part of our daily routine. It is difficult to imagine our life without them as they extract relevant information from the web, manage our home appliances, remind us on critical things, undertake communications at times, etc. Such machine learning assistants are constantly evolving leading to a high demand for talent with skills to manage and further develop them. In October 2017, the UAE became the first nation not just in the Middle east but the entire world to appoint a Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The first Bachelor’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI) was introduced in 2018 in UAE in the august presence of His Excellency Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, UAE. This underlines the growing importance of AI in all aspects – governance, economy, society and technology – in the region. But the big question is do we have enough talent and skills to undertake and drive AI? Perhaps not but the higher education sector is in an overdrive to plug-in this gap. AI is increasingly getting embedded into the higher education. The students at the university level are opting for courses that provides them with
EE2019.indb 2
AI knowledge to pursue career in emerging areas such as data science, machine learning, deep learning, advanced statistics, neural networks, software engineering, software development, research science, R&D engineering, business intelligence development and computer vision engineering, etc. Infact the conventional jobs such as information analyst, customer service, sales executives, HR & training, etc. are also getting augmented by AI, requiring acquisition of new skills to keep pace with the changing trends. As per a McKinsey analysis, AI will replace up to 800 million jobs by 2030. That’s a dramatic shift of the workforce and universities need to take cognizance of it to change their programmes accordingly to prepare the students for jobs demanding cutting-edge technology skills. The 2019 edition of GCC Education Guide provides a thorough insight into the executive education options in the GCC with a special focus on AI. ● By Akshay Bhatnagar

Shifting Paradigms Technology-integrated learning is metamorphosing the region’s higher education landscape, creating an environment of innovation and creativity for students to thrive and excel
Recently, a 10-year-old Saudi-based Syrian boy, Zayd Nashed, has been crowned as the Middle East regional winner of the 2018 “Micro:bit Global Challenge” for his entry “Doctor Robot,” a device for helping young asthma sufferers living in dusty regions such as the Arabian Peninsula. Zayd’s confidence in his ability to design complex technological projects, he told a Saudi-based newspaper, stemmed from his parents’ early introduction of tech into his education. It was his enthusiasm for robotics that led Zayd to enter the London-based competition. Such a pioneering invention of great socioeconomic significance being developed by a ten-year old boy speaks volumes about the potential of technologyintegrated learning in transforming the region’s education landscape and creating an

environment of innovation and creativity for students to excel and thrive. With the Fourth Industrial Revolution literally metamorphosing the world, educators cannot stay away from adapting their programmes to ensure children are equipped to meet halfway the world they are going to live. In a technology-driven and dynamic economy, higher education institutions must adapt to the rapidly changing requirements and demands of students, who are technology aware and more connected than ever before, and expect education to be the same. As the future moves rapidly towards digital

transformation, children are unaware of the jobs they may have. It is estimated that 85 per cent of today’s jobs will not exist by 2030. Technologies that are said to shape the near future are connected to artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, mobile solutions, the Internet of Things and cognitive computing. “Today worldwide innovation and creativity are the most important competencies that will make employees and organisation successful,” says Venkatesh PV, Principal Consultant & Business Head at Omanbased RAB. “Those competency needs to be developed with plentiful opportunities given to students to think out of box and do things which are innovative and creative.” “Technology is a part of our daily life, just like electricity, food or water,” Fadi Aloul, head of the computer science and engineering department at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), was quoted by the UK-based Arab Weekly. “Using it is no longer an option, it’s a mandate in every sector, whether education, health, utilities or transportation. The goal is to make our life better, more efficient and easier.” Aloul adds, “Technology can play a significant role in making it easier for students to get the content and apply it in practice. Universities and schools are moving from papers, books and pencils to electronic-books, files and material, with multiple chapters from different authors in one location.” DATA-DRIVEN ECONOMY
A recent PwC report titled ‘Building the Data Economies of the Future’, produced in conjunction with World Government Summit held in Dubai from February 10-12, maintains that every government in the region should promote the promise of data-driven economies. To achieve this, PwC’s research has found that involving young people must lie at the heart of the response. “Although governments have recognised the need to move towards innovative educational models, reforms generally do not go far enough in disrupting traditional
00_FEATURE 1.indd 6
education systems in preparation for a data economy or in providing all young people with the digital skills and opportunities to build and benefit from the data economies of the future,” says Mona Abou Hana, Government Consulting Partner at PwC Middle East. “The purpose of any government educational initiative or public/ private partnership should be to put young people in the driver’s seat, as shapers of their own digitised future. To this end, collaboration rather than competition between government, business and academia will bring mutual benefits.” The Middle East region, especially the GCC countries, has been quick to respond to this trend, as several universities in the region
are revamping their educational system to include an array of emerging technologies from e-books to artificial intelligence and robotics. The governments in the region have realized the importance of investing to build a knowledge-based economy and empower students with tools to transform the learning experience. The UAE has strongly focused on technology in education in the past years, including initiating an Innovation Hub by Oracle in Dubai, which allows students to pitch ideas in the hopes of developing technological breakthroughs. The use of virtual reality and augmented reality is proving very popular in schools and universities alike. These immersive technologies have immense potential to simulate real life experiences.

Opening New Vistas
A combination of the right skills, education and interest can help students find a rewarding and meaningful career in artificial intelligence (AI) The rapid expansion of technology and digital applications that characterises the ‘4th Industrial Revolution’, is changing the way we live, work – and learn. It’s a revolution driven by the fusion and amplification of emerging breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, automation and robotics, and multiplied by the far-reaching connectivity between billions of people with mobile devices that offer unprecedented access to data and knowledge. Autonomous vehicles, cloud computing, robotic nurses and surgeons, chat bots etc. are manifestations of this growing trend.

Online shopping, online games, email, social networking and media sites all have AI embedded into their applications, and the list of products and services continues to grow. Homes, cars, and financial and healthcare services are embracing machine learning to improve products and services. Education systems, teachers and curricula need to be responsive to these changes. The 4th IR creates a demand for new skills and competencies, while automation and AI puts jobs at risk. This then creates a need

to train and retrain people to utilise new technologies. National education systems have the opportunity to focus in on and hone inherently human competencies that are crucial in this rapidly shifting environment, such as problem solving, communication, critical thinking and collaboration. Technologies, such as AI, can be utilised to support formal education and lifelong learning by promoting the development of adaptive learning environments, with tools that are flexible, inclusive, personalised and engaging. Examples include blended learning spaces where digital technologies and traditional classroom activities complement each other, and personal AI tutors that can strengthen inclusiveness by providing intelligent support specifically tailored for each learner’s needs. However, AI tools lack the socio-emotional interactive communication skills that teachers can use to get the best out of their students. To maximise its potential, education systems must not get seduced by technology; the focus should be on learning.
CAREERS IN AI
A career in artificial intelligence can be realised within a variety of settings including private companies, public organisations, education, the arts, healthcare facilities, government agencies and the military. Examples of specific jobs held by AI professionals include - software analysts and developers, computer scientists and computer engineers, algorithm specialists; research scientists and engineering consultants; mechanical engineers and maintenance technicians; manufacturing and electrical engineers; surgical technicians working with robotic tools; Medical health

professionals working with artificial limbs, prosthetics, hearing aids and vision restoration devices; military and aviation electricians working with flight simulators, drones and armaments; graphic art designers, digital musicians, entertainment producers, textile manufacturers and architects; post-secondary professors at technical and trade schools, vocational centers and universities.
SKILL REQUIRED FOR AI
Automation, robotics and the use of sophisticated computer software and programs characterise a career in artificial intelligence. Candidates interested in pursuing jobs in this field require specific education based on foundations of mathematics, technology, logic and engineering perspectives. Written and verbal communication skills are also important to convey how AI tools and services are effectively employed within industry settings. To acquire these skills, those with an interest in an AI career should investigate the various career choices available within the field. The most successful AI professionals often share common characteristics that enable them to succeed and advance in their careers. Working with artificial intelligence requires an analytical thought process and the ability to solve problems with cost-effective, efficient solutions. It also requires foresight about technological innovations that translate to state-of-the-art programs that allow businesses to remain competitive. Additionally, AI specialists need technical skills to design, maintain and repair technology and software programs. Finally, AI professionals must learn how to translate highly technical information in

ways that others can understand in order to carry out their jobs. This requires good communication and the ability to work with colleagues on a team. So what are the educational requirements that students need to look at for a career in Artificial Intelligence? Basic computer technology and a background in mathematics form the backbone of most artificial intelligence programs. Entry level positions require at least a bachelor’s degree while positions entailing supervision, leadership or administrative roles frequently require masters or doctoral degrees. An AI coursework involves the study of the following: WW Physics, engineering and robotics WW Computer science, programming languages and coding WW Cognitive science theory WW Mathematics including probability, statistics, algebra, calculus, logic and algorithms WW Bayesian networking or graphical modeling, including neural nets
Candidates can find degree programs that offer specific majors in AI or pursue an AI specialisation from within majors such as computer science, health informatics, graphic design, information technology or engineering. AI and machine learning involve software

The skills to translate digital bits of information into meaningful human experiences will find a career in artificial intelligence to be sustaining and rewarding. that has been programmed to interact with the world in ways that would otherwise be thought of as human. AI depends on knowledge about the world as well as programs or algorithms to intelligently process that knowledge. Today, most AI programs are specifically coded to do one task. This sparks fears of the ‘singularity’ of AI, where the technology will be able to redesign and improve itself, or design more powerful AI, a popular theme in sciencefiction books and films, such as Terminator, I, Robot, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ethical questions are raised, not only around how we utilise AI, but the ethics of such technologies. One fear is that these technologies will centralise power, deepening inequality. Depending on how AI has been programmed, it may analyse a situation and implement solutions detrimental to people or the environment. Since AI is a reflection of its creators and those who have programmed it, we need to make sure that these technologies are aligned with our moral and ethical values. Despite these concerns, AI holds immense potential for students for an interesting and rewarding career. From its inception in the 1950’s through the present day, artificial intelligence continues to advance and improve the quality of life across multiple industry settings. As a result, those with the skills to translate digital bits of information into meaningful human experiences will find a career in artificial intelligence to be sustaining and rewarding.

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi
y
G
S
With stunning architecture and a rich history dating back to the 13th century, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is a multidisciplinary university that attracts highcalibre students from the UAE and around the world. Established in 2006, our state-of-theart campus operates under the academic leadership of Sorbonne University in Paris awarding degrees in the arts, humanities, sciences, law, management and economics. Following the ECTS system, all of our graduates receive globally certified French degrees accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education. To date, we have produced over 1700 graduates from more than 90 countries while forging a reputation for academic excellence and innovation. To ensure quality, we maintain small classes, enabling us to tailor our teaching methods to individual styles of learning. We also bring our faculty from Sorbonne Université in Paris, guaranteeing the same quality teaching present in our parent institution. In addition, our admissions process is highly selective, ensuring that individual talent benefits from collective excellence. With nine bachelor programmes taught in French (except for our BA in Physics) and 13 master degrees taught in English (except for the Master in Teaching French as a Foreign Language), Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi
is also home to the Continuing Education Center (CEC) for working professionals. Through a series of certificates and diplomas, the CEC provides lifelong learning programmes for professionals wishing to acquire new vocational skills. In support of the UAE’s vision of a knowledge-based economy, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi grants scholarships to students from all nationalities. Emirati students are eligible to apply for a scholarship towards their undergraduate fees for all three years of study, plus foundation years where applicable, following a grant by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. We have also introduced a new scholarship programme for the 2019-2020 academic year for international students, residents and non-residents of the UAE who wish to undertake our Diploma in Intensive French. Prof. Eric Fouache, Executive Director Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, said: “A degree from Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is much more than an academic achievement. It’s the culmination of a journey where students are continuously encouraged to think outside the norm and contribute to society as a whole. We equip our students with the knowledge and tools required to succeed in their chosen career paths, and contribute towards the UAE’s knowledge-based economy.”

Strathclyde Business School

al g
One of the oldest, largest and most respected business schools in the UK, the University of Strathclyde Business School has consistently been ranked in the top 10 B-schools in the UK in terms of both research and teaching quality. Strathclyde Business School is one of an elite group of only 88 B-schools in the world (2018) which hold triple international accreditation (AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB), and the Strathclyde MBA programme is also accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (CAA). Throughout the course of its history, Strathclyde Business School’s pioneering and innovative outlook has led to a number of firsts including being the first UK B-school to offer a one year full-time MBA programme in 1966, and the first to offer a part-time MBA programme at its international centres (launched in SouthEast Asia in 1988). The Strathclyde Executive MBA is offered at seven international centres; Dubai, Oman, Bahrain, Singapore, Malaysia, Greece and Switzerland and is taught part time over two years. With the exception of the mode of study, it is identical to the full-time MBA in the UK – the same entry criteria, programme content, assessment and core learning materials, and it is taught by the same Strathclyde academics who teach in Glasgow. Teaching and learning is highly experiential
and based on collaboration and teamwork. Through class discussions, presentations and group assignments, students share their varied work experiences, knowledge, understanding and skills.” A particular strength of the programme is strategic management with three interrelated courses that culminate in a three-day Strategic Consulting in Practice workshop, where students undertake a real-life strategy assignment for a client. Entrepreneurship is also in focus, with a core course on Entrepreneurial Management and Leadership and elective options, such as New Venture Creation, providing the essential skills to enhance the abilities of people working for themselves or about to set up in business. There are also options for international study. With a wide range of specialist departments in the business school, Strathclyde offers over 20 different electives, and students can opt to take elective subjects at the Summer School in Glasgow or at any of the school’s international centres. The Strathclyde MBA is a generalist MBA and students can expect to graduate with a broad understanding of the fundamentals of business and management issues, advanced management skills and techniques, selfawareness as a manager and leader and with increased confidence in all areas of business

Building New Bridges in Education The idea of a bridge has always served as a powerful model for education. As a concept it anchors the ideals of education in something less intangible, more achievable. According to UNESCO, the role of education is twofold: to empower individuals “to become active participants in the transformation of their societies”; to enable these individuals “to live together in a world characterized by diversity and pluralism.” It is in this very real sense that education functions as a bridge. By promoting certain values and attitudes it opens dialogue and fosters relationships, allowing experiences to be shared, common concerns to be communicated and mutual recognition to be reached. This role of education in building bridges between people and places has particular resonance in the UAE, which is celebrating 2019 as a year of tolerance. The analogy is also at the heart of a growing demand for executive education programs in the Gulf

region. For professionals seeking to gain a competitive advantage in international business, a broad knowledge base and flexible skill set is essential. In traditional management education, ‘bridge building’ has become a specialized business strategy. The globalized nature of business environments means that individuals must now be able to cross “the cultural divide” through effective, contextualized communication techniques. With the rapid developments in technology, there is also an increasing need to overcome “the digital divide” through more advanced technical knowledge. In response to these demands, universities have had to adopt a ‘bridge building’ approach to education. Today’s complex problems require multifaceted solutions. Multi/inter-disciplinary frameworks that allow students to supplement traditional skills with new tools have become the norm. It is in line with this model, for example, that universities are integrating digital business strategies into their established curricula. In recent years, however, the challenges facing business professionals have become increasingly complex. The existing educational framework appears outmoded and ineffective because it no longer reflects the reality facing students in the 21st century. In August 2017, the Harvard Business Review released an issue entitled “The Truth about Globalization”, which details a retreat from a global, international outlook into localized markets and mentalities. To navigate this new environment, a new set of skills is required. Basic knowledge of the global business world, an ability to bridge cultural boundaries, is no longer a sufficient response to today’s changing international climate. There is now a need for a deeper understanding of the complexities and contradictions of globalization, an awareness that bridges that bring proximity can also introduce distance and separation. The same is true of the digital divide. The growing number of mental health complaints among students (discussed
EE2019.indb 31
in the March edition of this magazine) suggests that the digital skills gap is more complex than first believed. Research now shows that technology and social media promote feelings of isolation and anxiety. In making the world more connected these platforms also cuts individuals adrift. As a bridge, they bring people together while also keeping them apart. Filling the digital skills gap is therefore no longer a simple question of acquiring new technical knowledge. What employers require, paradoxically, are improved social skills: versatility, social intelligence, selfawareness. With privacy concerns, data security and disinformation threats now the top corporate priorities, companies need individuals to analyze, and not just consume, technological data. Digital competences must come hand in hand with an ability to adopt a critical, disengaged position. To respond to these issues, the education sector needs to re-think how it employs the concept of a bridge in delivering knowledge. In light of the demands now placed on professionals, the traditional inter-disciplinary approach appears limited. In practice, the convergence of multiple viewpoints can lead to a narrowing of perspectives, as each discipline becomes more rooted in a particularized area of expertise. This model connects different fields but, in doing so, it also keeps them separate. How, then, can we adapt the notion of the bridge to address these challenges? In Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, where the motto is “a bridge between civilizations”, a new direction becomes possible. SUAD is unique in that it embodies the very ideals it represents. As a bridge between countries and cultures, it creates mobility and proximity between places and people. As a meeting point between Paris and
31

32
Abu Dhabi, it connects a long-standing tradition in academic achievement with a commitment to innovation and excellence. In SUAD, tolerance is not just an idea but an everyday reality. With a student body spanning over 80 nationalities, it is a symbol of the UAE’s commitment to diversity and intercultural exchange. In this very practical sense, SUAD offers a new way of defining the role of education in the 21st century. By putting principles into practice, it forces us to re-think the bridge not as something connecting separate locations, but as the point where alternative perspective are transformed into a single collective. For these reasons, SUAD provides a hub for innovation in research and teaching practice. As a faculty member, I have spent the last two years exploring the possibilities of adapting curricula and methodology in line with a new concept of ‘bridge building’. In my research, I am developing an alternative form of disciplinary exchange that moves beyond the limitations of the traditional approach. Rather than offer different modules in isolation (mutualisé), this new approach maximizes the potential of the classroom as a space where separate fields directly overlap (à la croisée). The idea is not just to bridge fields that remain at a distance (“inter-disciplinarity”) but to allow subjects to directly converge, in such a way that they are taught simultaneously (what I term “infra-disciplinarity”). At a practical level, traditional curricula are not simply supplemented with alternative approaches; instead, new tools and methods are acquired on the basis of pre-established knowledge. I am currently implementing this model in an executive education program entitled “Business for English, English for Business”. Building on the ‘dual’ status
00_FEATURE 3.indd 32
of the Bachelors degree in Applied Foreign Languages, the course combines knowledge in business related subjects (Marketing, Economics, Finance, etc) with the practical application of linguistic tools. Unlike other ‘mixed majors’, however, these areas are not studied separately but simultaneously, as two distinct but interconnected perspectives. First, traditional business knowledge is used to develop more effective communication skills; next, these models of analysis allow for a more rigorous approach to business practices and a more acute level of technological awareness. In the process of deepening their knowledge, students acquire the tools needed to confront the real problems now facing professionals. For this digitally engaged, multi-tasking generation, the goal is not simply to look at a problem from different perspectives but to recognize how these different perspectives themselves overlap. This ability to shift quickly between alternative viewpoints creates a heightened level of critical (dis)engagement and, ultimately, a creative mindset more attune to the trends and opportunities that exist in the global economy. For this new generation of bridge builders, uncertainty becomes the source of possibility and the fear associated with risk is replaced by a courage to adapt, experiment and innovate. Only this type of entrepreneurial spirit, one that grasps the true complexities of building bridges, can rise to meet the challenges of today.
