EDITOR’S NOTE

hat’s your earliest memory involving an exciting car experience? Mine was in the late ‘80s during a family holiday to Orlando, Florida. That trip marked the very first time I was ‘old enough’ to ride a go-kart all by myself. It was spectacular. The rush of adrenaline as I sped through the course, trying to beat as many others as I could to get to the finish line first. At the end of the race, I remember the operator telling my mother that I was a natural at it, and he was surprised that I didn’t crash once or run into any difficulties. I had always been hooked on cars – whether it was those little Matchbox toy models, or racing video games…etc. Go-karting just cemented my passion for it all. Decades on, I still get the same rush every time I visit a racetrack for a driving experience, or when I take a new model out for a test drive. So putting together EL’s Motoring Issue has definitely been a personal magazine highlight this year, and I can’t wait for you to read it. Our fantastic team brings you a comprehensive guide to everything from the latest models to what vehicles are coming up in the market. Plus, we spoke to the region’s leading motoring experts to give us their tips on what to look out for when buying. So whether you’re looking for a weekend Bentley or a practical weekday-friendly Audi, we’ve got all the details you need to make an informed decision. Obviously, we’ve still got all the usual sections that you’re used to. From high-end restaurants and exciting events to luxury fashion and travelling in style, there’s plenty to see and do this new season. Everyone is expected to get back into the full swing of things post Eid Al Adha (in mid-September), so enjoy that one last holiday and we hope you’re back feeling refreshed and ready to take on the cooler months – hopefully in brand spanking new car.

Enjoy the Executive Life...

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Motoring Issue

OSLO

AMALFI

My top three favourite road trips: 1) The back roads of Provence, France: Growing up, I spent all of my summer vacations in Provence. I have only good memories of these times and the car journeys we took. 2) Amalfi Coast, Italy: Deemed by UNESCO “an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape, with exceptional cultural and natural scenic values,” the coast was awarded a coveted spot on the World Heritage List in 1997 and is one of the many places I enjoy visiting. It is certainly Italy’s most scenic stretch of coastline to take in whilst driving. 3) Driving from Oslo to Nordkapp along the coast, Norway: I'd always had a yearning to travel to North Cape (Nordkapp) in Norway and was fortunate enough to do this a few years ago. This is a road trip that I will never forget. When we reached our final destination we were overwhelmed from the experiences we had along the way and the people that we met. Road trips on my bucket list: Road trips provide a great bonding opportunity and a much-needed respite from hectic city life. Not to mention that the laid-back pace and panoramic views are certainly additional perks of hitting the road. I would love for my family and I to take a road trip somewhere within the Middle East. Dibba, towards the UAE’s east coast, really appeals to me. It’s not often you drive by soaring mountains on one side and sea flowing on the other! The MINI model I prefer for road trips is: definitely the MINI Convertible. Under its tag line [‘Stay Open’], the new model represents a lifestyle packed with energy and emotions. The best way to describe it is enthusiastic,

open-minded, optimistic and outgoing. Life with the top down is animated, exciting and fresh. MINI is unique; it sets the agenda rather than follows one. It is also more than just a car, it’s a lifestyle. My perfect road trip music: always depends on my mood. I enjoy all different kinds of music, especially when the roof is down and it’s turned up to a high volume! When driving short distances, I enjoy listening to French music such as Daft Punk, David Guetta or Bob Sinclair; however, when I am heading off on a long road trip, I tend to play classics such as The Eagles’ Take it Easy or Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run. Our MINI importers across the Middle East frequently host events... whether it’s the launch of a new model or a fun and engaging rally drive around the city. AGMC, the MINI importer for Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, organises the MINI City Rally on a yearly basis which sees hundreds of MINI fans and owners from across the UAE head off on an exciting adventure across Dubai. The event usually finishes at the Dubai Kartdrome with some fun and engaging activations. We also recently hosted a series of Yalla MINI events across the region. Open to customers and fans, these roadshows see guests join in family fun activities involving our latest models available across the region. We are also very lucky to have the MINI Club Dubai here in the UAE. The local supporter group brings together a number of MINI aficionados from across the Emirates. The club frequently organises exciting road trips and days out around which are announced through its Facebook page [MINI Club Dubai]. Past events have included a cruise to Yas Island; a weekend camping trip to Fujairah; a Jebel Jais cruise, plus a road trip to Hatta.

Maserati Levante This is both Maserati’s first SUV and arguably its best new model in decades. It’s also a true Maserati. That means a lovely interior and handsome exterior, and an evocative soundtrack from the powerplant – though you won’t find a big-capacity V8 under the hood (yet). Instead, there’s a choice of Ferrari-built 350 and 430 hp twin-turbo V6 engines, the latter firing the Audi Q7-sized car to 100 km/h in just over five seconds. 50:50 weight distribution, a limited-slip rear differential and active 4x4 system allow it to fare surprisingly well off-road and in corners.

most, choosing the right model is essential. It has to fit the person’s lifestyle, be it a sports car, a sedan or an SUV. Gadgets can make life easier, so it pays to know what you like and test it out before making your choice. Whether you like safety systems such as adaptive cruise control or lane assist, or something sportier like sport seats, the world is your oyster.

In the GCC: Good air conditioning is essential here, but customers here usually also ask for a large sunroof, as well as larger rims for added street cred and personalisation. Having something exclusive is important here. People in Dubai and the UAE really know and love their cars! Colours for this season: In the UAE, white is always a sensible choice, but for those who like to stand out, why not get a colour that matches your style? Ruby

} Audi TT Since 1998 the Audi TT has drawn buyers with an alluring combination of low-slung looks, strong performance and practicality. This third-generation car is sharper looking and better to drive, and again offers a choice of front wheel-drive (230 hp) and four wheeldrive (310 hp) versions. However, the TT’s trump card is its interior, which moves the game on by replacing the conventional dials with a 12.3-inch colour ‘Virtual Cockpit’ display that also serves as sat-nav screen, and with clever details such as the heating and ventilation controls and mini-displays that are built into the centre of the air-vents. From AED 195,000.

red makes a strong impression and we just happen to have that available on our latest model, the Maserati Levante.

A lot of Maserati drivers are purists – they prefer to experience and control everything directly themselves. But say on the way to the office or even the school run, where convenience is key and time is tight, smart technologies just help to simplify life. Especially with our SUV model we are seeing greater demand for these types of features.

Torn between choosing two Maserati models? That’s going to be a difficult one! If you were struggling to decide between a Ghibli or Quattroporte or even a GranTurismo, we’ve now just thrown the Levante into the mix. With that you get the space and the functionality of an SUV while still driving a real Maserati. If in doubt, get them all!

} McLaren 570GT This is the latest model in McLaren’s ‘Sport Series’, a range of cars that are more compact and more usable than their costlier stablemates. The 570GT is great for longer journeys as well, thanks to softer spring rates, a side-hinged glass rear hatch and panoramic sunroof. This is a supercar that passengers will love just as much as drivers – but it’s still fantastic to pilot, accelerating to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds thanks to its 570 hp twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8. It’s also lovely to look at, with less fussy detailing than its sister 540C and 570S models. From AED 825,000

My top tips for purchasing a car this year: First and fore-

ON THE COVER

NEIL SLADE

President Middle East & North Africa, Aston Martin

My top tips for purchasing a car this year: Customers will very likely choose a luxury car that fits their lifestyle and driving behaviour – should it be sport-focused or a more comfortable GT or saloon. It’s important to determine the needs and expected use of the car they are after; will it be a daily car or a weekend car that’s purchased only to deliver thrills? In terms of functionality, the crucial features to choose besides the satellite navigation and the Bluetooth are front/rear cameras – if not standard, as it varies from model to model. Ventilated seats for GT and saloon cars are a must as well, taking into consideration the year-round average temperature of the region.

In the GCC: Customers tend to experiment more with their car colour schemes, especially within the luxury automotive sector. In Europe and the UK, for example, you see lots of blacks, whites and greys. In the GCC you will still see many more reds, yellows, blues and beautiful custom-made colour options – and in the interior as well! With the Aston Martin Q team you can take the customisation of your car to whole new levels. Rose gold finishings or specially designed embroideries are just some examples of what has been done with Aston Martin in the GCC. Colours for this season: Shades of silver are usually

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Motoring Issue

sought-after within our clientele, as they blend very

well with their favourite interior colours, being variations of tan and red. White still remains popular, but we have also been witnessing a growing trend for black and blue since the past year. It is also lovely to see customers choose a convertible option for their sports car to truly enjoy the autumn breeze during this period.

Everyone enjoys listening to their favourite music while cruising along in their car. In an Aston Martin you can listen in top luxury via our exclusive partnership with Bang & Olufsen who provide the top-of-the-line sound systems used throughout the Aston Martin model range.

Each Aston Martin model has its own unique features and personality. So it all depends who on you want to be behind the wheel. The Vantage range is fun, quick and aggressive when asked. The Vanquish on the other hand is more refined, offering greater luxury with its hand-stitched quilted seats and its power – it is understated until you press the Sport button. Again, it all depends on your personal requirements.

My top tips for purchasing a car this year: I recommend the following features: comfortable seats (electrically adjustable, not racing bucket seats), hydraulic lifting system, rear view camera, glass engine cover, Bluetooth system and road tyres [avoid track tyres if you are not a frequent track visitor].

IN THE DRIVER’S S E AT

BASEL AL KHATIB Brand Manager, Lamborghini UAE

In the GCC: Avoid non-GCC specification cars as there are differences in the coolants and the AC and air intake systems. I would also advise avoiding the full Alcantara steering wheel due to the hot weather. Colours for this season: Bronze, yellow, blue and white.

In terms of smart technology? For such cars [as Lamborghinis] you should always be in a good mood, and there is nothing better than an upgraded sound system for doing that.

If I could choose one Lamborghini model for 2016, it would be: The

} Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition ‘America’s only sports car’, the Corvette has thrilled enthusiasts on the road and on the race track since 1953, and its exhaustive racing heritage is celebrated in the Z06 C7.R Edition. Brutally fast, with a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 up front that pushes out 650 hp, it comes with a host of additional exterior and interior equipment, including carbon ceramic brakes. Only 23 examples of the Z06 C7.R are being made available in the Middle East. It looks likely that the next generation of this icon will have its engine behind the driver, so this may be your last chance to own a classic-configuration Corvette. From AED 475,000

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Motoring Issue

Huracán LP 580-2 will be the fun car for this season.

14

ON THE COVER

In the GCC: Luxury car buyers around the world look for similar features, of course depending on the prevailing climate. In the GCC region, we do not necessarily see features only requested here. Colours for this season: Personalisation is key for luxury car customers, and our customers are never going to base their colour choice on the season. What our customers look for is the widest choice possible, and then from this they choose colours and colour combinations to suit their style and the type of car they drive. For a Continental GT Speed, a colour to reflect the powerful and sporting nature of the car may be chosen. For our flagship Mulsanne, a more subtle and reserved colour would more likely be chosen.

Traffic sign recognition, such as that used in the Bentayga, is great, as are Google Earth and Street Views and Apple CarPlay. Night vision brings a whole new level of both safety and engagement, as seen on the Bentayga. Smart technology is only smart if it is intuitive, and genuinely helps the driver on a regular basis.

Torn between choosing two Bentley models?

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Motoring Issue

My top tips for purchasing a car this year:

ROBIN PEEL

Head of Marketing and Communications – International, Bentley Motors

For an SUV, a hands-free tailgate opening mechanism is a must. Lane assist is a brilliant driver aid feature and is certainly a recommended feature. Features are really down to the lifestyle of the customer. Bentley has a growing number of younger customers, and features such as a tow bar for the jet-ski trailer, or a bike rack for the family, are being seen more frequently.

My suggestion would be the Continental GT V8 S. Its design creates a clear statement of intent. A recalibrated engine, revised stability control and an uprated chassis complete the picture, delivering the kind of thrilling drive you expect from a sports car with Bentley’s racing DNA. With enough space inside to comfortably seat four adults and a boot that can accommodate your entire luggage, the Continental GT V8 S remains the definitive British grand tourer. But it’s the fearsome combination of limitless power and exhilarating handling of this luxury coupé that gives it the edge.

Nissan 370Z Roadster

Bentley Continental GT V8 Every model has a sweet spot and in the case of the Conti GT, the ‘entry-level’ V8 version is perhaps the best. In place of the bragging rights that come with the more expensive W12 you get a lighter, more agile car that boasts the same handsome styling and sure-footed four wheel-drive drivetrain – and, of course, the wonderful plush interior with plentiful wood and leather that’s been lovingly shaped and stitched by true craftsmen. It’s still no slouch; the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine pumps out 507 hp but it’s the torque – up to 660 Nm of it – that makes the Bentley such a pleasure to drive.

It’s difficult to imagine now, but soon the weather will start to cool down, making top-down driving appealing again. And if driving’s what you enjoy, the Nissan 370Z Roadster offers grin-inducing fun in oldfashioned spades. There are no turbos here – just a great-sounding, muscular V6 that blasts the car to 100 km/h in less than 5.5 seconds. From your low-slung position in the well-equipped cabin, you’ll savour the chassis and steering, which are all about providing engaging handling and feedback. The best part’s the price, which makes the 370Z – even with its small boot and low refinement – a real bargain.

From AED 840,000

From AED 134,000

My top tips for purchasing a car this year:For

CHRISTIAN SÖMMER Sales Director, Audi Middle East

luxurious comfort with safe and satisfying performance, I would look for a car with a spacious interior and seats that offer total adjustment. A luxury vehicle should offer innovative assistance and infotainment systems, efficient fuel consumption, selectable drive assist choices from comfort to performance depending on individual preference, smartphone connectivity through a multi-function steering wheel and a range of exclusive personalisation options.

In the GCC: Seat ventilation is a must in the heat, while off-road capabilities for the desert and on uneven roads - such as that delivered by Audi quattro technology - can make driving in the GCC a pleasure. Traffic safety features to protect the driver and passengers on the busy highways are also important, so I’d say adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist and cross-traffic assist in the rear. Colours for this season: Sepang Blue or Solar Orange are colours that look great.

In the cars of today, the Bang & Olufsen sound system features a new 3D sound. This exploits the spatial dimension of height and integrates 23 speakers to deliver 1,920 watts of sound so music sounds incredible. Audi tablets, which function as a versatile Rear Seat Entertainment system, are another amazing option. Another new feature for Audi is the optionally available MMI touch. Both driver and front passenger can write, pinch-tozoom, or scroll through lists on the system’s large glass surface.

For 2016/17 there are so many choices. I’d say, the Audi Q7 for comfort, performance and safety; the Audi S8 Plus for work; the new Audi A3 for everyday practicality and affordability; and the R8 for pure driver enjoyment and fun.

My top tips for purchasing a car this year: Before looking at features, I would suggest that you start by taking price stability and resale value into consideration. Access to an extensive range of individualisation options is also very important, as it goes a long way in making the car feel more luxurious and unique to the owner. With regards to key features, a high-end sound system is a must and can certainly bring the interior of a car to life during daily commutes. Electronically adjustable seats also come in handy for ensuring comfort.

In the GCC: It’s important not to overlook seat ventilation. It’s a great comfort feature, especially during the hot months where the temperature in a parked car can reach unbearable levels. This feature can help both driver and passenger settle in quicker once they commence their journey. Another key feature when taking into consideration the amount of highway driving that takes place in the region is cruise control. Colours for this season: The Porsche Miami

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Motoring Issue

Blue exterior colour certainly ranks high on my list. It’s a vibrant and unique colour that is guaranteed to turn heads all year round, especially when applied to a 911.

I’m a huge fan of in-car technology – and the more intuitive the better. For example, our new Porsche Communication Management system features handwriting recognition, allowing the operator to write the name of a destination with their finger, or they can also start the navigation system by voice. Even more exciting is the next generation of smart technology that we have in-store.

Our first all-electric sports car, the Mission E concept, features instruments which are operated by eye-tracking and gesture control, as well as via holograms, and will be highly orientated toward the driver by automatically adjusting the displays to the driver's seating position.

Looking for a car this season? I would suggest the all-new Porsche 718 Boxster – a fun and fantastic cabriolet model that is practical for the weekday commute and a weekend of fun driving. For those new to Porsche it is also a great way for them to get familiar with true sports car performance within a great design.

BRETT SOSO

Regional Director for Middle East and Africa, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Motoring Issue

My top tips for purchasing a car this year: It’s important to make sure that the technology you’re choosing is based on engineering prowess and is actually relevant to your everyday life and driving experience, rather than just a gimmick in the car. Also, when purchasing a luxury car, unique materials such as rare woods and leathers contribute to the car’s residual value, so make sure you are not spending your money on just steel and bolts – think of it as an investment.

In the GCC: Dropheads can be enjoyed, because apart from some of the hotter summer months, there’s fantastic sunny weather year-round without much rainfall. In other countries, there can be a lot of rain, snow, wind and generally cooler weather, which doesn’t allow you to enjoy a drophead throughout the year.

Colours for this season: We have over 44,000 colours available, so it’s difficult to choose specific trends! In general, customers in the GCC like to go with white a lot more than customers in other markets, but there are still a lot of vibrant colours being requested.

Audio is an important part of a driving experience, but many brands have been ignoring this and haven’t tried to improve it significantly. Rolls-Royce developed Bespoke Audio which we believe is the most advanced audio system found in any car in the world. It comprises of 18 speakers with microphones that constantly monitor ambient and exterior noises and will adjust the volume and tone settings automatically to ensure no external agents detract from the driver’s listening pleasure.

Choosing a car depends on your personality. Look at the models like suits for each occasion: the Phantom is more formal – a tuxedo; the Ghost is a bespoke business suit; the Wraith is a sports jacket; while the Dawn is a smart casual look.

19

Rolls-Royce Wraith Inspired by Music

BMW M2

The centrepiece here is the sound system – all 1300 Watts of it – which Bespoke Audio and Rolls-Royce engineers spent two years developing to be perfectly in tune with the car. The luxury carmaker says this special edition of its most sporting model reflects its long association with music and connections with stars of the industry, including Elvis Presley, John Lennon and Keith Moon. The copper finish of the speakers is carried over to other interior details and the ‘Lyrical Copper’ paint. However, like any Wraith, what’s most surprising is just how enjoyable this 632 hp coupé is to drive.

Don’t let the diminutive size of the M2 fool you. This is a seriously quick coupé, able to reach 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, thanks to its twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six engine that is not only powerful (370 hp) but also extremely flexible. And because of its compact size, the M2 changes direction just as swiftly. The usual ‘M’ addenda are here – large front airdam and air intakes, swollen wheelarches and four tailpipes – yet the M2 is all about the driving. Of all BMW’s sporting cars, this perhaps best encapsulates the original ‘M’ ethos – compact, responsive and keen to involve the driver.

My top tips for purchasing a car this year: With the heat index approaching 60°C, I’d start with making sure a new luxury vehicle has strong, reliable air conditioning, as well as functions for cooling and warming seats. Of course you’ll want to stay connected, so a great infotainment system is a must in order to access contacts, music and GPS on the go. The key, whether you’re in the vehicle or syncing to a smartphone, is to be safe, with hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

In the GCC: I’ve found lane change warning technology and adaptive cruise control to be very helpful; adaptive cruise control especially for potential distractions while driving. Don’t collect Pokémon while driving!

Colours for this season: Lighter colours are always nice all year round and white is very popular throughout the luxury segment. Your go-to colours shouldn’t be about a trend, but about the colour that you identify with the most. Favorite colours are very powerful and are subconsciously part of our personalities. I have to have GPS in Dubai or I’ll get hopelessly lost. My wife has a great sense of direction and drives more than I do, so she’s made enough wrong turns in Dubai, inadvertently heading to Abu Dhabi, to know her way around. My motor for this season is: The all-new Ford Edge SUV. It’s a mid-size SUV that looks great, is very capable and fun to drive, and is packed full of smart tech. And it goes without saying that the new Ford GT supercar should be on everyone’s list… sadly we’re only making 250 a year, so they will be hard to come by.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé The SUV-coupé is proof that manufacturers will always find new niches to fill, and the GLC Coupé is the latest model in this subsegment. Its proportions are very different to the ‘regular’ GLC – it’s 8 cm longer and 4 cm lower – and details such as the single-bar grille and wide strip rear lights emphasise the squatter appearance. Standard sports suspension and more direct steering than its GLC brother mean the Coupé is more enjoyable to drive, and the usual raft of safety and comfort equipment you’d expect from the three-pointed star is also present.

WORTH THE WAIT BUGATTI CHIRON The Chiron is the follow-up to the car that rewrote the supercar rulebook – the Bugatti Veyron. If you were expecting a small step forwards, think again: power of the reworked four-turbo 8.0-litre 16-cylinder engine is now an astonishing 1,500 hp. That means 100 km/h comes up in less than 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of 420 km/h. It’s likely that these cars will be bought as much for their ‘collectability’ as their performance – a shame, as the cabin is a sensational celebration of other-world luxury and nicer to look at than the exterior, which is imposingly efficient rather than beautiful.

HONDA NSX The original Honda/Acura NSX showed that supercars can be reliable, roomy and easy to drive. Its successor has had a 10-year gestation, and the global recession resulted in the V10 being replaced by a clever 550 hp hybrid powertrain combining a twinturbo V6 with three electric motors, nine-speed automatic gearbox and four wheel-drive. The aluminium, composite and steel body is exotic and alluring: sharp creases and stubby overhangs give it a distinctive and aggressive look. First drives in Europe and the US suggest this NSX is – like the original – a blast to drive, so let’s hope it makes it to the UAE.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY The current Discovery (or LR4 in this part of the world) is already 12 years old yet stills sell strongly, thanks to its rugged looks and ability to shrug off rough terrain as readily as a full load of people and their paraphernalia. The Discovery 5 is due out in 2017 and is expected to be lighter and lower, yet as flexible and as capable as today’s much-loved model. Expect seven seats, touchscreen media system and the familiar rotary drive mode selector. The styling will likely combine Discovery Sport and existing LR4 elements.

The C-Class Cabriolet will be the cheapest way to get into a car that has four seats, a soft-top and the famous three-pointed star on its grille. Smart features will include AIRCAP, which reduces buffeting by deflecting air over occupants’ heads, and AIRSCARF, which enhances comfort by pumping warm air from the headrests. Powertrain options are likely to mirror those of the C-Class Coupé – in the UAE that should mean a choice of 184 hp (C200) or 245 hp (C300) four-cylinder models, or the C63 AMG, powered by a 476 hp turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 that propels it to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds.

It’ll also sport the same four wheel-drive system as the RS3 hatch, plus super-fast gear changes from the DSG double-clutch gearbox and vivid acceleration. HYUNDAI GENESIS G90 Here’s an interesting concept: a Hyundai as big a MercedesBenz S-Class and packed full of even more equipment. Early reports suggest excellent build quality and a genuine premium feel. There’s no word on engines (or even models) in this part of the world, though the 311 hp 3.8litre V6, 365 hp twin-turbo 3.3litre V6 and 420 hp 5.0 V8 all deliver solid performance.

bout me: I was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany but I have lived and worked in Denmark and the UK before moving to the UAE in 2011. My work experience lies mostly in marketing with a specialisation in brand management and rejuvenation – the transition of brands into their next phase in growth through domestic and international marketing campaigns. I worked for almost a decade in fashion marketing and management, before being appointed Head of Marketing & Communications for Mercedes-Benz Cars in the Middle East. In this role, I am privileged to contribute to the continuous success of our brand. Today, the designers at Mercedes-Benz reconcile tradition and modernity in designing the cars of the future. Their creative efforts focus on sensuous clarity as the definition of modern luxury. This expresses a fundamental aspect of the brand – the dynamic alchemy of intelligence and emotion. Linking the two aspects of intelligence and emotion is what I consider the most interesting and rewarding challenge in marketing.

O N -T R A C K D R I V I N G I S A PA S S I O N . . . I cannot get enough of the Yas Marina Circuit – one of the most impressive F1 GP tracks in

the world. Contrary to this modern race track are the two iconic tracks in Portimao in Portugal and the Circuito Ascari in Spain – both of which are demanding circuits that are challenging for any driver.

MY WORK PLACE EL meets Ralph Debbas, CEO of W Motors, the Middle East’s very first manufacturer of luxury supercars

W Motors certainly has an interesting history. Tell us about how it all started out. It started simply as a dream; since I was a child I imagined building the perfect car myself, and this never left my mind while growing up. It was once I finished my Master’s degree in Automotive Design at Coventry University that I decided it was time to put my hands to work, starting this venture and establishing a reliable network of partnerships. A few years later and after much work we achieved our first creation: the Lykan HyperSport. First shown at the Qatar International Motor Show back in 2013, the hypercar has gathered an incredible amount of attention and enthusiasts behind it. Since then everything else unrolled: we toured the world with the Lykan, showing it to automotive enthusiasts, clients and fans; had an incredible feature in Furious 7, and created a second model for our lineup. Now, everything is coming together with plans for new models, showrooms around the world and our own manufacturing plant in Dubai. We were the first ones to establish a luxury car brand in the region and undoubtfully we lead the way for all the other brands to come in the future.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|At The Office

How did the idea of your cars come about? What did you feel the industry was missing? It was an idea that evolved in my mind over the years that ultimately culminated in the creation of our first hypercar. With only a handful of boutique car companies in the market, our goals with the Lykan HyperSport and the Fenyr SuperSport were to create something different: we kept it extremely exclusive, included an incredibly intricate level of customisation, never-seen-before technology – such as the holographic display on the Lykan – embedded our unique design DNA and worked with the most respected partners in the automotive industry to ensure the car’s reliability and performance. While W Motors has been around for a while, it really made its mark after the release of the Furious 7 movie. How did that collaboration come about? I have to say it was an incredible experience to work with Universal Studios on the seventh instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise. While the team was researching for the movie and looking for a car

35

You’re out on the road at the moment with your American Tour - how important are foreign markets for you? And apart from the GCC, which countries have taken a large interest in what W Motors is doing? Foreign markets are fundamental for W Motors. Even though there is a huge interest in the GCC, our primary markets are foreign. I have to say our most important external markets are China and the USA without any doubt. You also have your flagship showroom in Dubai coming up - what can visitors expect from it? Visitors can expect an experience different from any other showroom they have been to so far. We are creating a space that not only showcases our cars but also lounge areas and a fine selection of art pieces gathered from around the world. In this space, visitors will also have access to exclusive products developed with companies from around the world that share our values and aesthetics. We have some more surprises to be unveiled as well, but we will keep these a secret until

fit for an Arab prince, they came around the Lykan and completely fell in love with it. From that moment, they reached us and the collaboration became a reality. Months after we had produced ten replicas of the Lykan HyperSport to be driven off buildings, across sets filled with props and again across glass windows. To create the scene seen in the movie, nine out of the ten replicas were completely destroyed in the shooting. The W Motors team was always present during all major shoots and of course for the world premiere of the movie where the Lykan was on tour with the actors around the world to promote the release on a global level. What’s the starting price of your vehicles and how long does it take from order to delivery? The first car we presented, the Lykan HyperSport, had a price starting at $3.45 million – but since it was introduced all the seven units were spoken for. The Fenyr SuperSport, our second creation, has a significantly lower starting price of $1.85 million. All vehicles need between 10 to 12 months from order confirmation to delivery, depending on customisation and availability in our production schedule. What features does the Fenyr have that are unlike any others found in other luxury vehicles? Besides its unique origins and unique design language, the Fenyr SuperSport hides an array of technological features not seen in any other car. These features are being unveiled one by

we get closer to the official opening. So where is your HQ for now? Is your office in Dubai? Currently, we are based in Dubai and our headquarters are in JLT. It is here where our management and creative team head the operations for the rest of the world. What are your plans for 2017? Where would you like to see W Motors? We expect 2017 to be an even greater year for W Motors than 2016 has been until today. Next year you will see the Fenyr SuperSport prototype zero driving on the streets around the world, as well as the introduction of a new SUV concept sporting the W Motors DNA. These are only some of the highlights of a year that will see the opening of more showroom locations around the world and the construction of our manufacturing facility here in Dubai. Finally – a car such as the Fenyr isn’t for everyone, and obviously it’s not your average everyday car. Who is this ultimately suited to in the region? The Fenyr SuperSport is a racing machine. We developed it around the idea of a track car for the streets - keeping the speed without sacrificing comfort. Because of this, our client is someone looking for a thrilling experience and a boost of adrenaline; someone who is looking for something unique that is entirely different from everything else in his garage.

EL takes a first look at the stunning new residences scheduled to launch right next to Dubai Opera in Downtown Dubai

Emaar Properties has unveiled an exclusive collection of residences located adjacent to Dubai Opera, the soonto-be iconic centerpiece of the upcoming Opera District in Downtown Dubai. The all-new ‘Act One | Act Two’ residences – which open to views of Burj Khalifa and Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard – are seated in exceptionally designed 52- and 46-storey towers that take their façade design cues from the rhythmic sway of The Dubai Fountain. Aptly named to capture the dynamism of living right where all the action is, the complex will feature just 718 residential units including one, two, and three bedrooms, and a limited collection of penthouses located on the highest two levels. A dedicated promenade opens to the majestic view of the Dubai Opera with high-end retail and exclusive cafes, and rich amenities including a health club, spa, infinity pools and swimming pools. “Act One | Act Two are truly a defining destination of choice for anyone culturally inclined, as they now have the unique value proposition of living right next door to Dubai Opera,” said Ahmad Al Matrooshi,

DUBAI OPERA: FUN FACTS ① This 2,000 capacity venue will include 31 premium boxes that can accommodate up to 184 people. ④ With the building predominantly made of glass, for the purpose of making it as illuminated as possible, Dubai Opera’s main chandelier weighs a staggering 5000 kg, and contains 2900 LEDs. ③ Spanish tenor Placido Domingo – AKA the 'King of Opera' – will launch Dubai Opera on 31 August.

Managing Director of Emaar Properties. “A premium development that celebrates the vibrant cultural lifestyle of the city, the residences bring a one-of-a-kind lifestyle choice to the city. “The international launch of the project underlines the strong demand from discerning investors who cherish the inspired way of life that Act One | Act Two brings.” This launch follows earlier investor interest in the Dubai Grand and Forte residences in The Opera District, a destination that will feature luxury hotels, designer homes, a retail plaza, waterfront promenades and parks. In addition to the spacious, well-lit design of the residences, Act One | Act will have world-class fixtures, says the developer, as well as a wide range of services including 24-hour concierge and security. Scheduled to open August 31, Dubai Opera will be a magnet for arts and cultural enthusiasts from across the world. For more details, contact +971 4 366 1688

The Residences Adjacent to the Nikki Beach Resort & Spa, the residences will offer 63 branded apartments, varying from one- to four-bedroom units. The residences will also include six townhouses and one penthouse. Each unit comes with its own allocated parking space. According to the developer, the apartment buildings will remain true to the Nikki Beach brand guidelines, offering a modern, minimalist fresh resort feel through the use of natural

materials. Residents will also have access to a gym and multiple F&B outlets. The highlight, however, is the property's close proximity to the 400-metre shoreline stretch spread across the resort.

Design “What truly sets us apart as a brand is the design of the property, with a seamless transition between inside and outside spaces,” explains Sary Arab, Executive Vice President Nikki Beach EMEA Hotels & Resorts Ltd. “We have created areas that are very gentle to the senses. Every part of the project is a new discovery, but we also focused on maintaining a level of coherence throughout the property.” The design of the rooms, villas and common

areas features the signature white theme of the Nikki Beach brand, complemented by elements inspired by the beach, sea and sky. “Nikki Beach is all about keeping the look natural and simple. There’s nothing synthetic or over the top. It was the natural look combined with soft sophistication in all white fabrics and free-flowing white curtains that made the essence of our Nikki Beach design,” says Nikki Beach Founder, Jack Penrod.

Market Comparison

To Let, or Not to Let?

According to Propertyfinder.ae, a one-bedroom apartment at Nikki Beach costs an estimated 64% more than the average onebedroom apartment in the Jumeirah area. Meanwhile, it is 0.97% bigger than the average one-bedroom apartment in Jumeirah.

The website estimates that a one-bedroom apartment could fetch an annual rent of AED 110,000.

Former Indian National Yoga champion, Sumit Manev speaks about his new Dubai studio, and how he’s keen to bring it back to basics | Glenn Saitch

Dubai might not be the first place that you’d go looking for inner-peace, but it’s here that you’ll find former Indian National Yoga Champion Sumit Manev and his new studio, Lifestyle Yoga Dubai. “It’s important to understand that yoga is my life!” From the moment the interview begins Sumit speaks with passion that’s almost jarring with how at ease he seems. “It’s not just my job, but an escape to selfrealisation and peacefulness.” He talks at length about how his mother ignited his passion for yoga at a young age, her care and guidance leading him to one of traditional yoga’s best schools – Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya. He speaks so fondly of his experiences in India that I wonder why he’d move away. “There’s a great cultural diversity in this part of the world.” His answer feels much less like a sales pitch than I had anticipated, “I felt that there was a need to introduce authentic yoga to Dubai.”

Sumit is clearly concerned by the lack of authenticity in modern yoga practices, and if you’ve ever witnessed a yoga rave you might agree with him. “If you don’t learn the basics of yoga, you’ll never experience the real essence of it.” He reflects on previous students that have wanted to dive straight into learning more glamorous yoga poses, “but without a strong base you can’t build a house.” At Lifestyle Yoga Dubai he works tirelessly, teaching a combination of authentic, powerful yoga practices like Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga and Kriya Yoga in the same way that he was taught by his master in the Himalayas. I ask if he’s worried that authentic yoga might seem a little out of touch in the 21st Century. “It’s still extremely important.” His answer is accompanied by a chuckle; I don’t doubt it’s a question he’s been asked before. “21st-Century life is full of stress, and authentic yoga helps us get rid of those burdens,

it gives us insight into who we truly are.” Sumit speaks plenty of sense. Life in modern-day Dubai moves fast and the challenges of corporate life certainly take their toll, particularly for executives. “Many of our practices focus on Hatha Yoga.” He explains why Lifestyle Yoga Dubai is trying to open a pathway to yoga for people in high-pressure jobs, “which is highly recommended for stress management because of its slower pace, ease of movement and meditative qualities.” Studies have shown that even just a 10minute yoga practice on a daily basis can help fight against stress and other mental illnesses. I ask Sumit if many people are contacting Lifestyle Yoga Dubai looking for a natural way to combat illnesses. “There is still a common misconception about yoga. perhaps because of the presence of too few male yoga instructors.” Sumit answers with a deep, sad sigh. “There is this false cultural belief that men are only supposed to perform “manly” exercises, such as

football or weightlifting.” But the strength on show during Sumit’s sessions is on par with any gym. Bench-pressing your own body weight is nothing compared to the strength and balance it takes to settle in a picture-perfect Crow pose. “You can see that their strength is improved.” Sumit notes that the men he teaches aren’t just cultivating physical strength, “but as they gain control over their bodies they also gain control of their emotions and their lives.” “Yoga is a mind and body practice; that’s why we can consider it an integrative health approach.” Sumit tries to explain to me how he puts together individual training programmes but it’s a fruitless exercise and I shamefully have to admit that it’s gone over my head! “Don’t worry, there’s a smart science behind it that most people can’t understand at first.” He rattles off a list of diseases and disorders that yoga has proven effective at treating – anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, heart disease and even some forms of cancer. “There are actually key yoga poses that help to reduce blood glucose levels.” Sumit is confident that yoga can help treat a growing health problem in the UAE. “Yoga can help our bodies to become more responsive to insulin, which would be effective in treating the diabetes epidemic!” It amazes me that a practice based on teachings from centuries ago can be so successful in combating modern day problems. I feel like Sumit and I could happily talk for hours about the benefits of authentic yoga but sadly I’ve only got time for one last question. I ask if he’s got any advice for people thinking of taking up yoga. “It’s never too late, and never too hard,” he answers, and I genuinely believe him. “You’d be surprised by what you can reach within a very little amount of time.” Visit lifestyleyogadubai.com

#ELREVIEWS As India celebrated the 70th anniversary of its independence on 15 August, EL tries out Dubai’s finest sub continental restaurant. We also review a fancy London import

TRESIND

EXECUTIVE LIFE|Time Out

Nassima Royal Hotel, Dubai The restaurant: Home-grown Tresind describes itself as serving postmodern Indian food. What that means is that chef Himanshu Saini serves up dishes from across the subcontinent in unusual ways, using everything from molecular gastronomy to fusion techniques to refine the flavours associated with this encyclopaedic cuisine. His efforts, combined with the tableside service and a fine dining environment, have made the restaurant a firm favourite among the UAE’s Indian community to celebrate special occasions. The menu: The comprehensive selection can seem daunting, with what appear to be classic dishes enumerated across a number of pages. There’s something for everyone, from red meat to fish and vegetarian options. The tasting menu is a good choice for first-timers, and features several of the restaurant’s now wellknown highlights. What we ordered: Any first-time visitor must try the chaat trolley and the mushroom ‘tea’. Chaat is a street-side snack akin to Bombay Mix, and must be blended and served fresh. At Tresind it’s prepared at the table, complete with liquid nitrogen and Jackson Pollock-style saucing. The final composition has many

textures and flavours and leaves the tongue tingling: a single spoonful is crisp, soft, sweet, spicy and sour. The tea meanwhile, really is a mushroom consommé the colour of a light brew. Served in a tiny cup with dried morels to serve as tea leaves and powdered truffle oil as the sugar, it’s the most glorious mushroom soup you’ve ever had and will definitely leave you wanting more. Other highlights are a fantastic salad of chicken tikka carpaccio, served on a bed of apple smoke, a lip-smacking vinegary Goan sauce, akin to Vindaloo but nowhere near as fiery as the British version, and among the desserts, an airy goldflecked puff of delicate creamy foam called Daulat ki chaat, a Delhi winter staple recreated so it’s sweet and light. What’s right with it: Order the tasting menu and you could be sitting there for the better part of three hours. So unless you’re investing in a relationship (or a client), gently prompt your guests to order the standard three courses. What’s wrong with it: It’s a little difficult to find. So I guess they need to clarify their address online. Total bill: AED 1,200 for two, inclusive of beverages Rating: 4.5/5 Info: Open from noon to 3.30pm and from 6.30pm to 11.30pm. Reserve at 04 308 0440.

THREE OF THE BEST… Summer Evenings

Indie DIFC Urban and edgy, this little hideaway above Gaucho restaurant has a nice edgy vibe that bridges work and play with tapas-style sharing platters and quirky mixed drinks. Try: The Spicy Rock chicken, or yoghurtmarinated crispy chicken strips, and the Peruvian-inspired Super Corn Salad. Emaill: reserve@indiedifc.com

Pure Sky Lounge With sweeping views of the coast and the Palm islands, this rooftop escape on the 35th floor of the Hilton Jumeirah Beach is perfect to host out-oftowners. There’s 35 per cent off on food all summer, with cocktails at AED 35 each. From 5pm on weekdays. Try: The braised beetroot and watermelon salad is a winner, but for something a little more substantial, go for the triple-cooked salmon and pea mash. Call: 04 374 7888

Sheraton Grand Hotel, Dubai The menu: As is increasingly the norm, this brunch is part buffet and part table service. You get your own appetisers and dessert, but you can also order one soup, starter, main course and side. A sort of marketplace serves up exotic fare such as Kamchatka king crab claws, Japanese scallops and Portuguese sea bream – done to your liking but for an extra price. What we ordered: We started with miso soup, a beautifully balanced bowl of goodness, with floating bits of silky tofu and almost gelatinous seaweed. A starter of Wagyu beef tacos was crunchy and buttery with a spicy finish, but a duck version didn’t impress. Black cod in a yuzu-miso sauce was perfectly flaky, falling apart at the first touch, though not as good as Zuma, and a lovely side of gluten-free noodles was a hit with my clean-eating companion. Of the buffet, the sashimi didn’t wow, but the yakitori was very moist, particularly a

savoury shiitake skewer with teriyaki sauce. The dim sum was excellent, too – with the shiitake faring best here too. What’s right with it: The service. This venue has been slated for its waiting staff’s lackadaisical approach, but not only were our bubbles topped up before our glasses was empty, the multinational crew had a helpful, friendly attitude – and got our orders right first time. They took extra care with my gluten-free companion, recommending a tom yam soup for her flu [she declined because she wasn’t up to the spice] and a chocolate fondant for dessert. What’s wrong with it: The add-ons. Next to the city’s many all-you-can-eat [and drink!] concepts, upselling a brunch that’s already priced near the top of the market seems a bit cheeky. One king crab claw alone is AED 280, and although it’s a chance to try exotic fare, we’re not convinced. Total bill: AED 1090 for two, for the bubbly brunch alone. Rating: 3/5 Info: Friday brunch runs from noon to 4pm. Reserve at 04 388 8744.

Vault Gilded and glittering, this Business Bay venue at the JW Marriott Marquis is the place to see and be seen by night. Early in the evening, it’s quiet and intimate, with happy hour from 5pm. A view of the Dubai Canal works is a bonus. Try: The gold-flecked sushi - this is Dubai, after all. And yes, it tastes as good as it looks. Call: 04 414 3000

HIGHLIGHTS

Things to see and do

 ESSENTIALS

AT A GLANCE:

Fast forward to 2016 and W Dubai Al Habtoor City is finally here. Currently in soft launch phase, we jumped at the chance to take advantage of the introductory rates and spend a weekend there. A bit about the property. Comprising 356 rooms, W Dubai is also home to two restaurants and two lounges, an outdoor pool and gym, as well as a business centre. With its convenient location and offerings, the hotel has pretty much everything you need for a business stay.

EASE OF CHECK-IN:

Heads up – considering Al Habtoor City is still under construction, it is a little tricky finding your way to the entrance. This has been confirmed by a few friends who have ordered a taxi to the hotel, only to be taken to the JW Marriott instead. So keep your GPS/Google Maps handy. Upon arriving in the early evening, we were escorted to the 30th floor to check-in, and I must admit that I found the reception area a little odd. With low, nightclub-style lighting and thumping, dance music, I struggled to hear most of the things the lovely staff member was trying to explain to me. It actually doesn’t give the best first impression of the hotel. After all, loud music is probably one of the last things you want after a long-haul flight?

ference here is that the Marvellous room is bigger in size, plus it is located on a higher floor. We were also informed that it offered a sea view, but to be honest, all we could see was the Dubai Canal project construction. But who cares about the view? This is not why we were here. We loved our room – everything from the trendy decor and furniture to the open concept bathroom. Things like an iPod player with proper connector (not the old one like most hotels have), espresso machine and motorised curtains rounded up the offering nicely.

FEED ME BRUNCH @ LEVEL SEVEN If you’re there on a Friday, then don’t miss out on the fantastic Feed Me brunch (12.30pm-4.30pm). Here, Level Seven features seven live stations, serving up everything from seafood to pasta. Plus, there’s a private dessert room! We loved the fruit ‘tacos’ (pictured).

BLISS AMENITIES Usually we don’t get this excited about the sinkside amenities, but we make an exception for the W brand. After all, who can say no to some Bliss fun-size samples? Don’t believe us? Try Bliss’s refreshing Lemon + Sage body butter and you’ll be a convert in no time.

BEST FEATURE:

If we’re only choosing one, then it is without a doubt the staff. Every single W Dubai member we met and dealt with was exceptional without being overbearing, and that really makes a difference to a stay.

W E W E R E N ’ T A FA N O F :

As mentioned

before, the check-in area.

S L E E P Q UA L I T Y :

Excellent. We could have stayed in that amazing bed all day. But sadly, it was time to leave.

NAMU For a spot of dinner, Namu is the place to be. This Japanese-Korean restaurant excels in fresh sushi on ice, as well as grilled specialties, such as Korean Lamb Chops Yang Galbi (ssamjang-marinated lamb chops) and Hot Belly Song Aji Sam Gyup Sal (milked veal belly).

WHAT BUSINESS TRAVELLERS ARE S AY I N G O N L I N E : “I travel at least twice

ROOMS: Our booking was for a ‘Spectacular’

a month all year and always stay in fivestar hotels across the world. During all those years the staff at the W Dubai stood out as the best people.” – Mohammad, Booking.com “We organised a large corporate event when the hotel had just opened. Everything went perfectly! The staff is great, professional, alert to everyone’s needs and ready to assist.” – Alain H, TripAdvisor.com

room, but much to our surprise (and delight), we were given a free upgrade to the ‘Marvellous’ room. Comparing descriptions, the dif-

EL books and pays for UAE hotel stays reviewed in this publication.

ROOM SERVICE If you can’t be bothered to leave your room during your stay, then that’s perfectly fine, because the room service here is A+. For us, good room service = an excellent cheeseburger, and W Dubai’s does not disappoint. One of the best in-room dining burgers we’ve had in Dubai.

C

onfession time. I have been waiting for Dubai’s very first W hotel for a very long time. Having experienced the wonderful brand in destinations such as Doha, Istanbul and New York City, it felt somewhat strange that Dubai – home to some of the best hotels in the world, and arguably the most popular holiday destination in the Middle East – had yet to have its own W. Thankfully, that changed a few years ago when it was announced that Al Habtoor City – which was to be built in place of the Metropolitan Hotel complex along Sheikh Zayed Road – would feature a cluster of Starwood hotels, including – hooray! you guessed it – Dubai’s first W.

Getting there: This hotel, which is a 25-minute drive from Dubai International Airport, is in the heart of the Downtown Dubai area, popular with residents and tourists. Nearby landmarks include the St.Regis Dubai, The Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. Location: Al Habtoor City, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai Prices: During September, rooms start from AED 850 per night Info: wdubaialhabtoorcity.com

rexit. The Chinese share market crash. Oil price capitulation. We’ve barely gone past the halfway point of 2016, and yet, each of these market-shaking events has already happened. And each time events like this occur, literally billions of dollars are wiped from the value of equity, currency and bond markets worldwide. In fact, pretty much every traditional financial asset takes a battering in the kind of volatile, news-driven investing environment that we find ourselves in. With that kind of uncertainty around, it is no surprise that investors have started casting the

net much wider than ever before in search of investments that are less buffeted by the winds of volatility. Enter alternative investing.

FORGET TRADITIONAL AND BORING The factors that send nervous investors in search of more stable places to allocate their capital has seen a rise of truly ‘alternative’ investments. The asset prices of things like designer handbags and artwork – both featured in previous issues of Executive Life – have all been steadily rising over the last decade. Further along the spectrum of novelty investing, rock and sports memorabilia, historical

stock certificates and even part ownership of herds of prime cattle have been found by innovative investors willing to look further afield for market beating returns. But is there a better alternative to all of these?

A BETTER PLACE TO PARK CAPITAL

A PODIUM FINISH The reason that classic and vintage cars have proven to be such a successful investment for many over the last decade – apart from their undeniable ‘cool factor’ – is that the cold, hard investing returns stack up favourably against most asset classes. For example, the Historic Automobile Group Index, which tracks the collector’s car market, shows a highly favourable comparison with almost every global stock exchange over a tenyear period. Over the decade, the Automobile Index was up well over 500%, while the S&P 500, a diversified collection of some of the largest and most recognisable businesses in the world, grew a comparatively anaemic 60%. This kind of performance is undoubtedly the reason that some of the most prominent businesspeople and celebrities in the world have been attracted to investing in cars.

Investing in cars doesn’t only have to be for the super-rich and famous. The principles to successfully investing in a car are the same as successful investing generally. Finding a car that is rare and of high quality is a good place to start. In addition, if it is desirable, timelessly fashionable or in possession of a good story or a unique place in history, then chances are you are onto a winner. Unlike stocks or bonds, cars are something that you can truly get excited about investing in, and based on the returns on offer for discerning choices, they can prove to be fantastic investments.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|Wealth

Common wisdom is that the price of a car peaks at the moment before its first owner drives it off the car yard lot. For most of us, cars have always been a necessary but relentlessly depreciating asset. However, there is one number that you should keep in mind that may help change this preconception: $242 million. That is the value of just a few hundred cars that were part of one of the largest auctions of its kind earlier this year in the United States. That headline number actually masks the truly stellar returns on offer if you can identify, buy and hold on to a truly rare and soughtafter model such as the iconic Ferrari 250 GTO from the early 1960s. A particularly well-preserved example of this model has sold for in excess of $38 million. That’s not an aberration either. A Packard Twelve 1108 Dietrich from the early 1930s has earned $3.6 million at auction, while a more recent supercar, the McLaren F1, changed hands for $13.75 million recently.

lectors in the United States. The popular late night talk show host has a garage that was formerly an aircraft hangar. And just as well, because the car-crazy comedian has an estimated pool of over 130 cars, from a vintage 1906 Stanley Steamer Cup Racer, to a modern supercar in the form of a McLaren P1. A man whom Leno has interviewed, Floyd Mayweather, also has no shortage of options for rides to transport him to and from fights. It is estimated the world-beating boxer has spent over $7 million amassing his collection, with a leaning towards modern sports cars like the Bugatti Veyron and Lamborghini Murcielago. Jerry Seinfeld, of Seinfeld fame, is also a noted car enthusiast, and even parlayed that passion into a hit Internet show called ‘Comedians in Cars’. The concept involved Seinfeld and a guest taking a classic car for a spin, while a camera in the car recorded their conversation. Notable guests included Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jim Carrey and, in one amazing episode, President Barack Obama. Seinfeld’s personal collection features a plethora of Porsches, including several Carreras and 911s, with a Boxster or two thrown in for good measure. Representing British males with discerning taste in cars, James May is the former Top Gear presenter who has the collection that is most likely to appreciate in value over time. His taste leans towards the classical or unique, which are both favourable factors that contribute towards rising values. Notable parts of his collection are a 1971 Rolls Royce Corniche and a Ferrari F430, as well as some less well-known but unique offerings from former Eastern European manufacturers that have long since gone out of business.

It may not feel like it right now, but the cooler months are right around the corner, which means the return of the off-road season. Hooray! And Arctic Trucks has just unveiled its brand new calendar, scheduled to kick off in October. Following the success of their first expedition to Iceland earlier this year and previous collaborations with off-roading clubs in the UAE, the company – which specialises in 4WD vehicle modification – has a new line-up for drivers looking to take on a variety of terrains, with activities in Dubai, Oman and even trips to Iceland. “We are looking to further build interest for off-roading in the region, bringing the Arctic Trucks experience to everyone who owns a 4x4 or wants to transform their vehicle to drive in any terrain around the world,” said general manager, Hjalti Hjaltason. “Our collaboration with The Guide Oman is one of many where we offer the desert experience of off-roading and in 2017 we welcome guests back to our homeland, Iceland.” Activities will begin in October with Arctic Trucks’ very own Off Road Club, where Hjalti and his team will welcome a group of enthusiasts of all levels into the Dubai/Abu

Dhabi desert. The club takes place once per month on a Friday morning and is free to join. Crossing the border, meanwhile, The Guide Oman will also have guides and highly trained professionals to provide assistance along the entire trip. The ultimate highlight, however, will no doubt be the Iceland adventure. The 2017 tour will cover most of the picturesque areas of Iceland – starting from Haukadalur, home of the great Geysir hot spring; visiting the Gullfoss waterfall, and taking the highland road of Kjölurall up to Kerlingarfjöll mountain hut. Here, the group will be able to explore some hot springs around the Kerlingafjöll area. From there, adventurers will head to Hveravellir where they can bathe in the natural hot springs. Aiming to include more adventures in the snow, the team plans to take the Kjölur mountain road back down from the highlands, depending on the weather conditions and head to the Langjökull Glacier – Iceland’s second largest glacier – for snowmobiling adventures. Prices TBC. For more information on how to book, email info@arctictrucks.ae.
