YOUR GUIDE TO THE HOTTEST 50 SPAS IN THE UAE

I

EDITOR’S NOTE

’ll be the first to admit that I am guilty of not taking good care of myself during working hours. When I’m not rushing from one meeting to the other, I’m busy at my desk sorting out assignments, writing articles, editing copy, planning events… the list goes on. As a result, I’ve fallen into the habit of skipping meals in favour of finishing a feature, for example. Or I’d rather get an email done than take a 5-minute break to go for a little walk or grab a coffee. Over the years, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve not found any food left at the nearby café or shop due to choosing to work during the lunch hour. My saving graces have been that I go running every weekday in the morning, weight train three times a week, and eat healthy, home-cooked food at home. But even I know that’s not good enough. According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth-leading risk factor for death of people all around the world, with studies showing that sedentary behaviour can lead to type 2 diabetes and other diseases, including cardiovascular problems, cancer and other chronic conditions. In the United States alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that in 2010, 86% of all health care spending was on individuals with one or more chronic medical conditions. And that’s probably why an increasing number of workplaces are incorporating wellness programmes into their structure. So what has all of this got to do with Executive Life, you ask? Well, January tends to be the month that everyone jumps on the health bandwagon, with the majority abandoning their efforts a few weeks later. But it’s okay, we’re all human – just don’t focus on the ‘bad’ attempts too much. So we’ve dedicated our February – March issue to all things health and wellness – from hitting the gym and taking part in Dubai’s newest yoga festival, to ordering healthier food and managing a better work-life balance. You can think of us as your post-January cheerleader to keep those new good habits in check. Enjoy the Executive Life...

Rachel McArthur p.s. Our apologies... In the December 2015 – January 2016 edition of Executive Life, we incorrectly referred to Mark McCarthy as the General Manager of Al Ghurair Arjaan and Al Ghurair Rayhaan Rotana. He is in fact the General Manager of Arjaan by Rotana, Dubai Media City. We apologise for any inconvenience we may have caused to Mr. McCarthy and the rest of the team at Rotana.

SUPERFOOD OF THE YEAR

They may not look that appealing on their own, but the humble bean and pulse have been dubbed the food to watch for in 2016

E

ating more plant foods, opting for smaller portions and bringing mindfulness to meal times are the top dietary trends for this year, according to Helen Dodd. The UAE-based master dietician’s trendwatch, written for the Enritsch.com, says that beans and pulses will be the preferred ’super foods’ of the coming year. “Beans and pulses are big news for 2016. They are filled with protein, fibre and release any carbohydrates they have slowly, they are bursting with nutrients, can actively help lower bad cholesterol and what’s more they are extremely comforting and satisfying,” said Dodd, who is recommending individuals base half of their lunch and dinners around plant foods. “Try them in soups and stews, and with chillies in salads or tossed on baked potatoes.”

FIND THEM ONLINE: Bean dish ideas Black bean breakfast burritos Lentil salad with roasted vegetables Golden red lentil dal Garbanzo bean brownies Egyptian koshari (to keep it healthy, just lower the amount of rice and macaroni used!)

Meal portion sizes is also something to be keeping a close eye on this year, according to Dodd. “This again is not sci-fi revolutionary information, but so many of us struggle to get it just right. Over the years portions have gotten bigger, plates have gotten bigger and it is now acceptable not to share a sharing bag of maltesers. We have forgotten how to stop.” Her portion guide to getting it right is to have one palm size of lean protein, one fist size of slow release carbohydrate and two outstretched ’hands’ of salad and vegetables for each meal. Fruit is two cupped hands, and nuts one small cupped hand. Two thumbs up for cheese and one index finger for the occasional chocolate. “If you do you’ll have energy, get all your nutrients and feel satisfied, no faddy diet needed,” she continued. Most impressive is the private, heated pool, which has been salinated to mimic the Dead Sea itself. jwmarriottmarquisdubailife.com/sarayspa

The spa specialises in world-class slimming and anti-ageing treatments to leave guests looking their best almost instantly. The Shrinking Violet is a body wrap that uses Lipolysis to melt fat – in just 90 minutes, you can lose anywhere between two and four inches all over – while the Margy’s Collagen 90-minute facial has a Botox-like effect on lines and wrinkles. Of course, there are treatments on offer for pure relaxation. Try the show-stopping salt-water floatation pool; just one hour in there is said to be the restful equivalent of eight hours of sleep. jumeirah.com

1. TALISE OTTOMAN SPA This spa needs no introduction. The award-winning spa is visually stunning – like something out of 1,001 Arabian Nights – and is home to the largest hammam facility in the Middle East. The World Travel Awards even named it the UAE’s Leading Spa Resort for three years in a row. If you only choose one treatment, make it the Royal Ottoman, an hour-long hammam treatment where you’ll be bathed, scrubbed, massaged and thoroughly pampered using traditional Arabic ingredients. At the same time, a spa therapist will administer a revitalising facial that will leave you glowing. Be sure to leave enough to lounge on the hotel’s stunning private beach. jumeirah.com

EL GUEST COLUMNIST

“MY DAILY YOGA PRACTICE IS A MUST”

A DAY IN MY LIFE 7am Wake up, snooze a few times, and then finally get up and pack my several bags for the day (yoga, work, teaching). 7.30am Head to yoga class at the Yoga Room in JLT; no breakfast to avoid any messy headstand situations! 9.30am By now I’ve finished my practice, had a quick shower and I’m off to open yApparel’s store in Jumeirah at 10am when I can finally grab a coffee and fruit cup from Costa.

Writing for EL this month is Dina Ghandour, founder of yApparel, a homegrown yoga and activewear concept in Jumeirah, Dubai

A

s the owner of yApparel, I’m essentially responsible for every element of the business - from purchasing and merchandising, to running a large marketing campaigns, manning stalls at markets and keeping all of our admin in check. This month is busy in the UAE with many hip events, and we are actively participating in a few as well as creating some of our own to launch new brands and products. Super hectic, but all super fun! I’m also teaching yoga at the moment and trying to build up a little community through my classes as well. In February I’ll also be traveling to New York to discover new brands at some of a few prominent contemporary clothing exhibitions.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Wellness Issue

THIS MONTH, I’M LOVING The weather! These days it’s just incredible, and I try to make the most of it by being outdoors. I particularly love to go camping in the desert and be off my phone and the grid for a night or two, pitch up a tent and stargaze.

M Y 5 B U S I N E S S M U S T- H A V E S

① Yoga leggings: I know this sounds cheesy, but they’re essential because it means I can go from studio to street to meeting to market

with maximum ease and comfort. ② Instagram: yApparel generates a significant amount of traffic as well as sales to our store and website through this visual-centric social app. ③ Shopify: Our e-commerce platform is built on this. User friendly and incredible customer support, with an app to track real time sales. ④ Company stamp: In the UAE, this is basically more important thank your passport for logistics or business transactions. ⑤ iPhone: I can take great quality photos, design graphics, post status updates and pay bills on the go.

B E YO N D B U S I N E S S My daily yoga practice is a must to keep even-keeled and approach each day with a more balanced and fresh perspective. And then when I come home after a long day I love watching easy TV series like Friends, or listening to a nerdy podcast – I’m currently hooked on Radiolab, Freakonomics and This American Life. For more information on yApparel, visit yapparel.com or to book yoga classes with Dina, head to jivamuktiwithdina.com.

10am (until 2pm) I have my very own shift at my store, and I love meeting my customers – being their personal stylist and making them feel great inside and out. By 2pm I’m heading out of the store to pass by the post office and clear any shipments, deliveries or samples for our new collections. 4pm We keep some of stock on consignment at various studios around Dubai so at this point I’m usually replacing inventory and restocking a studio with a fresh collection for their customers. 5pm to 7pm Gobble down a very late lunch – usually a colourful salad with everything I can find in my fridge, and some peanut butter and rice cakes for that extra protein boost. Then I’m back on the computer corresponding with suppliers, customers… etc. 8pm Teach my twice-weekly group Jivamukti yoga class at Inspire Yoga + Pilates. 9.30pm Dinner time; usually it’s from my favourite Indian take-out restaurant Memsaab. I’m all about their chana masala. A movie or TV show is usually on in the background – these days I’m binging on Netflix. 11pm Ready, set, sleep.

“WHAT WE NEED IS TO GIVE OURSELVES A LITTLE BREAK EVEN IF IT’S JUST FOR 30 MINUTES A DAY”

In Dubai, we’re a little guilty of working too much and not having enough time for wellness, how do you strike that balance? You can come up with 1000 and 1 excuses but the truth of the matter is we all have time. What we need is to give ourselves a little break even if it’s just for 30 minutes a day to reflect on our body and give it what it deserves. Yoga certainly fits that criteria in many ways. I already spend about 10 minutes a day after waking up doing yoga and it can be as easy as breathing. For those new to the practice, what are the benefits of yoga? The benefits of yoga provide both instant gratification and lasting transformation, helping keep the body healthy, refreshed and the mind focused. Yoga is not just about working out, it’s about maintaining an all-embracing healthy lifestyle. Apart from yoga, in your free time, what do you like doing to unwind? I like to bike ride in the desert, take the kids

to the beach and spend quality time with friends and family. And what other sports/fitness methods do you enjoy? Other than yoga, I enjoy running, swimming and full body workouts. Having lived in the UAE all your life, what are your favorite things to do here? I am a foodie and therefore enjoy trying different cuisines, I keep up with fashion trends and spend time shopping for the latest must haves! I love being outdoors and traveling through the desert. Any favourite restaurants? I love Sumo Sushi. Where do you like to go for travel? I enjoy traveling to London, it’s a very vibrant city which has mastered the art of keeping its routes in heritage and culture. Finally, what else is coming up for XDubai in 2016? In additional to the Spartan Race and the Electric Run which is now in its second year, we have a line of exciting projects and events that we will be announcing shortly, including a video that is due to be released at the end of February. MY WORKPLACE

EL meets Omar Al Duri, award-winning personal trainer, coach, nutritionist and founder of Platform 3 Fitness, who tells us more about his role and his favourite perks of the industry

My role: I’m a fitness contributor who has been involved in the industry for over a decade. Born and raised in the UK, I set out to expand my education and experience after attaining two degrees back home. Dubai has been a good platform for me and has been a great learning curve both professionally and personally. I’m also involved in football, having secured a role on the coaching staff for the International U20 Ghana football team, and I’ve recently returned from the FIFA u20 World Cup in New Zealand and the African Nations Cup in Senegal. I’m also fortunate to coach my own women’s football team in the UAE who are involved at high competitive levels regionally.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|At The Office

A typical day in my life: I practically move around with a bag which has my meal prep, coaching gear, boxing mitts and battery pack! Depending on the day of course I’ll normally have back-to-back clients from 7.30am to 3.30pm. I then get a chance to work on my own training for about an hour, then set up for coaching which can be either for an 11a-side team or 7-a-side team depending on the league. Once I’m home I’ll cover emails and programmes that I manage, especially ones abroad due to the time difference. For example, in the States clients like to be updated at breakfast on progress reports, meal plans… etc. If I could name three unique things about my workplace, they would be: Music, music and music! Did I mention music? Haha. I think it’s important in any environment to create your own surroundings and energy to be able to be productive. I’m fortunate enough to have several stations to work out of including football pitches across the UAE. Standout features of my office include: the

31

“THE KEY TO STICKING TO TRAINING IS HAVING A GOOD RAPPORT WITH YOUR TRAINER OR SPECIALIST”

And my top three must-haves for business are: a calendar, as I couldn’t move around without one. As crazy as it sounds when I don’t have access to that I’m not organised. Also, a good team that supports you and is on the same page, plus transparency with who you deal with, as sometimes matters may not be in your hands. But as long as you are true to yourself no-one can be a better version of you. Balancing good nutrition while being on the go is important: Five days a week I’m on meal prep and get my meals delivered to me by the Hangout Latino. This ensures that I don’t have to measure calories and have all the nutrition required to get me through that kind of day. Sometimes I’m more worried about missing meals than overeating. But I do have splurge days like everyone else: I make sure to enjoy my cheat meal and look forward to it all week! I love Italian food and enjoy a good burger once in awhile. Surf Café does a great sea bass and Wingsters do the best chicken wings in town! During my free-time you’ll find me doing: Refloxology and deep tissue massages, or watching live local bands like Abri and the Funk Radius. I also like to visit markets and new concepts. Anywhere with good energy and good people! As for my favourite sports, they are football, boxing and swimming. For execs who are always busy, the key to sticking to training: is having a good rapport

with your trainer or specialist, an understanding and a plan moving forward, as we lack incentive or goals sometimes to drive us on. If I could train any well-known figure at Platform 3, it would be: a few people who may not appear major celebrities to the world, but selfishly I would train them to feed off their energy. Nick Vujicic who is born with Rare Tetra Amelia Syndrome is an inspirational speaker from Australia. And despite being limbless – missing both arms at shoulder level, and having only one small foot with two toes protruding from his left thigh – he surfs, swims, and plays golf and football. The challenge of training someone like that entices me, because it’s far from the usual conditions we face every day. This would enable me to adapt, research and grow to a new challenge which all specialists require to further their education in the industry. The other obvious figures would be Nelson Mandela, Mike Tyson, Roger Federer and Giavanni Ruffin. As you can see I clearly haven’t dreamt about this question! Coming up this year: I am excited about working with more schools regarding the importance of fitness and nutrition and striking the right balance. I was delighted with the feedback and response from my Healthy Lunch Box menu which was supported by World Cup winner Mike Tindall. I’m also working on more collaborations with different specialists around the UAE to get involved with communities and charities. Finally a lot more writing and tips on nutrition and fitness for my website which I launched last year at omaralduri.com. Personal training and nutrition sessions at Platform 3 start from AED 350 per session with a full body assessment, consultation and report. For more information, visit p3dubai.com.

There’s no doubt that the new Bentley Mulsanne Speed is an eye-catching ride... but is it worth the AED 1.39 million price tag? | Megha Merani

 BENTLEY MULSANNE SPEED

A

much sought-after private island has just come on the market and you must jump on your jet immediately to go close the deal. There’s one seat on board and you have to choose whom to take along: the butler or the bouncer. That’s basically what it comes down to when deciding between the Bentley Mulsanne and the Mulsanne Speed. If you pick the latter, then you’ll likely want the beautiful beast that is the Speed.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Commute

THE CAR Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October, Bentley’s new 3,200 kg baby is striking. Unlike the gaping looks at Ferraris and McLarens, the Mulsanne Speed is so eye-catching (and intimidating) that people surreptitiously sneak a sideways glance because they don’t want to offend the chauffeured VIP that might be riding in it. A dark tint finish has been applied to the exterior stainless steel matrix grilles, lower bumper grilles and wing vents. The headlights and taillights showoff the same dark tint, making for a dramatic entry into driveways at night. The 21” wheels, available in painted, polished and dark tint with machined accent finishes, are individually machined from solid forged blanks, before being perfected by hand. Meanwhile, you can almost hear the twin rifled exhaust tailpipes on the reengineered powertrain, and the solid, polished stainless steel ’Speed’ badging on the front fender, quietly but powerfully warning other cars considering cutting past: ’Don’t even think about it.’

AT THE WHEEL Bentley’s mighty 6.75-litre twin-turbo V8, propels the Mulsanne Speed to 100 kilometres per hour in 4.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 305 kilometres per hour. The 25 extra horses more than the Mulsanne, at 530 horsepower, are matched by markedly improved efficiency; a 13% gain means a range extended by 80 kilometres. The new engine is paired with a recalibrated gearbox optimised for a higher wave of torque, delivering instant torque on throttle application. The gear changes in all modes (Comfort, Sport and with paddle shifters) are barely a whisper. Of course Sport mode is what you’re going to drive in to get to your jet and make it to your meeting on time. Why else did you buy the Speed? In Sport mode, this Mulsanne feels much like an angry 5.5 metre crocodile ready to pounce forward towards its prey thanks to the huge 811 lb ft torque. Driving in ’Sport’ mode is a sort of anxious excitement where the car growls at you because it needs to accelerate. A new ’S’ gear mode gives the driver even more control, and maintains the engine speed above 2,000 rpm so the turbochargers are always ready to deliver instantaneous performance, making it even more aggressive. That said, it’s willing to be conquered and waiting to be told what to do. You don’t have to try too hard at turns and corners either. The steering is elegant, responsive, and at times when it can’t decide whether to be on the heavier or lighter side, it agrees to disagree and doesn’t assault the driver with any sudden changes in steering feel.

SPECIFICATIONS VEHICLE: Four-door sedan Bentley Mulsanne Speed ENGINE: 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V8; rear-wheel drive POWER: 530 bhp @ 4200 rpm TORQUE: 811 lb ft @ 1750 rpm ACCELERATION: 0-100km/h in 4.9 sec MAXIMUM SPEED: 305km/h TRANSMISSION: ZF 8-speed automatic with Quickshift, Block Shifting and wheel-mounted paddleshift STARTING PRICE: From AED 1.39 million

Overall, the handling is sublime for a car this size. Stopping power is gentle, (passengers will never fear of whiplash) and it respectfully glides to a halt. The ride, despite the driving mode, is serene and much like gliding along on a magic carpet that hovers over the highway.

INSIDE A CABIN OF LUXURY

VERDICT Funnily enough, for an aggressive auto the Bentley Mulsanne Speed has an impeccably polite honk. It’s still a well-mannered Bentley after all - with a kick to it. It’s the one you’ll love driving and being driven in. Choose the bouncer, if you dare to tame the beast in him.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Commute

But settle into the back on diamond quilted seats embroidered with Bentley emblems that recline and offer massages and you’ll wonder: ’Why would I ever want to drive this car?’ To create a modern two-tone feel, a new and unique colour split is available, with new stitch lines, that balances diamond quilted light-colour hide with darker, smooth hide. A new technical veneer option is available, with Piano Black veneer panels now including expertly handcrafted carbon fibre inlays. A 2,200 watt Naim for Bentley premium audio system expands on the standard 14speaker system. There’s charms such as the frosted glass bottle cooler with bespoke crystal flutes, electrically operated foldout tables with recesses and connections for iPads and matching keyboards. A 60 GB on-board hard drive can store music and films, while on-board Wi-Fi through a dedicated router keeps the car connected on the go.

Investing Stateside Looking to own a holiday home stateside? Then you’re in luck. It is the first of its kind to offer VIP shopping experiences combined with a private three-day tour of luxury homes and properties that are currently on the market for private purchase. The tailored inspection tours are conducted by Sotheby’s Real Estate, and holiday packages are available through local GCC right now.

Why the OC? This county is ideally located in the heart of Southern California with less than 45 minutes to Los Angeles and an hour to San Diego. As such, in addition to having access to some of the world’s best beaches, shopping, and family entertainment attractions, from beach-fronted luxury resorts visitors can enjoy all the lifestyle pleasures that the OC has to offer as well as make day trips to urban attractions in San Diego and Los Angeles, without the traffic hassles that Los Angeles is renowned for.

EAT, DRINK CLEAN

Eat, drink clean Because abs are made in the kitchen, don't you know? Here are five healthy eating plans to get into this month

EXECUTIVE LIFE|Self

Jessica Williams

LOVE FOOD ME

KOLD PRESS JUICE KOMPANY

In a nutshell: Customised meal plans with an emphasis on high quality ingredients.

In a nutshell: Dubai’s newest cold pressed juice company promotes a healthy lifestyle rather than a quick fix.

Love Food ME offers meal plans that can be customised according to your personal goals, with an emphasis on high-quality, nutrient dense ingredients rather than calorie counting. The meal plans are divided into three categories: Vitality, Lifestyle and Power. If you’re watching your weight, opt for Vitality: this plan is free from added sugar, nutrient dense and low GI. Think salmon with cauliflower rice or lean beef with sweet potato. The Lifestyle plan is for those following a Paleo diet - it's gluten and dairy-free, with no refined sugar, and all the meat you’ll eat is grass fed and free range. It’s a great one for weight loss. Finally, the Power plan is a protein-heavy diet designed for active clients who want to lose fat while building lean muscle. Plans last six days a week (Friday is your off day) and the day’s food comprising two to three meals and two snacks, are delivered to your door by 8am. From AED 759 per week | lovefoodme.com

The newly launched Kold Press Juice Kompany might offer juicing programmes, but their cleanses are less about a quick fix and more about incorporating juices into your daily routine. Before you order your juices you’ll consult with the company’s nutritionist to create a programme to suit your goal, whether it’s to have greater energy, sustained and healthy weight loss or support an active lifestyle. Co-founder Wesley Gregor is a passionate cook and takes a chef’s approach to each recipe, incorporating unusual ingredient combinations such as sweet potato, orange and chilli or beetroot and fennel. Most juices have a low sugar content, using just one or two fruits, making them even healthier than the average green juice. Super foods such as coconut oil, activated charcoal and chia seeds also feature on the menu. Currently KPJK has a small kitchen in Al Quoz and a pop-up juice and coffee bar at Capital D studio with plans to branch out. Prices available on request | koldpressjuiceko.ae

DETOX DELIGHT In a nutshell: Delicious juice, soup and meal plans for customising your cleanse. Detox Delight is one of the most reputable juice companies in the business, with a wide range of products and cleanses that you can customise according to your own needs. Everything is raw, vegan, and free of gluten, dairy and refined sugar. Plus, the food is genuinely tasty. From AED 450 per day for the Eat Clean Delight | detox-delight.ae

WILD AND THE MOON In a nutshell: A hip juice company that uses local, organic, ethically sourced ingredients. This Dubai food and juice company describes itself as ‘slow food set to an urban beat’; their manifesto is that food should be “good for you, for the environment and above all, delicious”. There’s a hip, edgy energy to Wild and the Moon, from its stylish owl logo to the tongue-in-cheek titles on its menu – Hang Over Cure (coconut, pineapple, carrot and coconut oil) or OMG! (mango, carrot and coconut oil), for instance. But the quality of the products speaks for itself, as all ingredients are sourced locally and are free of gluten and refined sugar. Cleanses can last for one to seven days, depending on your preference and consist of four cold pressed juices, one nut milk, and two ‘elixirs’ – vitality shots containing powerful, quick acting ingredients such as cayenne pepper, ginger and turmeric. From AED 330 for one day to AED 1,990 for one week | wildandthemoon.com

Kite Beach is set to become a food and fitness hub this month, when the Beach Canteen returns to Umm Suqeim as part of the Dubai Food Festival. Alongside 15 delicious home-grown restaurant concepts and celebrity chef appearances, Beach Canteen will serve up all-new features such as fitness classes, open-mic nights, storytelling by the sea, a farmer’s market and fashion market, as well as local bands, DJs, children’s activities and beach sports. “This year, we have taken Beach Canteen to the next level with its new look and programme to create an exciting hub that will inspire visitors to sample our incredible range of events across the city,” said Laila Mohammed Suhail, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) that organises Dubai Food Festival. “The Beach Canteen has stood out amongst the city’s residents, visitors and tourists as a Festival favourite over the past two years with its festive buzz and vibrant atmosphere.” As diners indulge in the best of Dubai’s food scene throughout the Festival, the Beach Canteen hub will help them enjoy the festival guilt-free with complimentary fitness classes. In partnership with community gyms, different classes will be offered each day, such as HITT (High Intensity Training); morning, sunset and full moon beach yoga; and beach Pilates. dubaifoodfestival.com

In a nutshell: Raw, vegan meal plans supplemented with cold pressed juice. This home-grown brand was one of the first cold press juice companies in the UAE, and are known for their three-day and five-day juice cleanse programmes. Recently, they’ve launched Essentially Food, a raw, vegan food menu designed by holistic nutritionist Kristin Fraser. The plan is completely free of dairy, gluten and refined sugar, without compromising on taste. Think vegetable soups, noodles made of spiralised zucchini, crackers made of dehydrated onions instead of wheat, creamy cashew nut dressings and chocolate brownies full of good-for-you ingredients such as nuts, coconut oil and cacao powder. A typical day on the plan includes three meals supplemented with Essentially’s trademark cold pressed juices. Just a few days on the meal plan will leave you full of energy, free of digestive woes and glowing with vitality. From AED 1,495 for five days | essentially.ae

WAKAME Sofitel Dubai Downtown The restaurant: Considering His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai’s recent visit to Wakame, there’s no doubt that this restaurant is the place to be. Frequented by executives, VIPs and socialites, there’s a lot of hype surrounding this restaurant at the Sofitel Dubai Downtown. Thankfully, the food lives up to the hype. The menu: The menu is a feast of contemporary Asian-inspired cuisine with a bit of an edge, and best of all, Wakame’s friendly team is happy to give you the lowdown on what to order and/or what to expect from the dishes, which is very refreshing. We were recommended a number of things to try, ranging from small starters and samplers to larger plates and dessert. What we ordered: Prawn, scallop and mushroom siu mai (dim sum); mini lobster tacos; wagyu mini burgers; salmon sashimi with jalapeno dressing, mango, celeriac, pickled kumquat and ponzu jelly; grilled asparagus; grilled wagyu sirloin steak with black pepper truffle sauce; chocolate filled mini doughnuts. What’s right with it: The food, food and the food! The lobster tacos, which came dressed with yuzu guacamole and salsa were outstanding… each

bite melting in your mouth. The wagyu burgers were another highlight – the truffle sauce takes it to the next level. The bread absorbed the sauce and the wagyu beef’s juices just right. But the best dish had to be the grilled wagyu main course. Regularly, with a typical dish you tend to enjoy the first couple of bites the most, but this is different. Why? Because you have an assortment of dips to choose from and so every mouthful can be accompanied with a different flavour or texture. As for the doughnuts, from the look of it, I thought it was going to be quite Arabian; however, the chocolate filled was pleasantly surprising. What really stood out during the whole experience is that the temperature of the dishes was in harmony, which I think is very important because it affects the taste. What’s wrong with it: It’s very hard to find anything wrong with this place. If I were being tremendously picky, then I would say that the dim sum offering seemed standard to compared to similar restaurants. I would probably skip that next time. FROM EARLY BEGINNINGS TO 2016 Established in 1964 with solid shareholders and strong dollar-based equity; AAIB is Egypt's only private-sector bank with a full-fledged presence in the Gulf Region. Enacting its vision to become a leading financial group extending its services to the entire region, AAIB has established five subsidiaries: Arab African Investment Holding (AAIH), Arab African Investment Management (AAIM), Arab African International Securities (AAIS), Arab African International Mortgage Finance (AAIMF) and Arab African International Leasing (AAIL). These subsidiaries have transformed AAIB from a just a bank to a fully-fledged financial group. Furthermore, we’re in the process of establishing a microfinance company shortly. AAIB has raised the bar for banking in Egypt. Its history has been galvanised by its established attribute as a trendsetter in the industry, and it has set the record for fast-paced dynamic growth, becoming Egypt's fastest growing bank in terms of size and profitability over a decade since 2004. These growth rates have substantiated AAIB's vision to become the leading financial group in Egypt, providing innovative services with a strong regional presence while establishing itself as the gateway for international business into the region. AAIB revolutionised the notion of growth beyond the single bottom line. The bank follows an aggressive growth strategy in every possible way that is expressed not only in achieving profits but also in adding value to all stakeholders.

CHECK-IN: THE NILE RITZ-CARLTON, CAIRO

EXECUTIVE LIFE|Business Class

Downtown Cairo recently welcomed one of Egypt’s most anticipated hotel launches. But has this luxury property been worth the wait? | Rachel McArthur

HIGHLIGHTS

Things to see and do

NEW BEGINNINGS Almost nearly five years on, and the Nile Ritz-Carlton finally opened in October 2015. Has it been worth the wait? Definitely. It’s just a shame that it has taken so long for it to finally debut. First things first, despite the travel warnings and worries associated with the North African country, Egypt remains widely safe, and some would argue that security risks are similar to those of the majority of countries around the world. So at the end of the day, it’s down to the individual as to whether or not they want to visit. But the capital remains a massive hub, not only for tourism, but for business as well, which makes this luxurious hotel a fantastic location for those jetting in for meetings or corporate events. The Nile Ritz-Carlton, Cairo is a stone’s throw away from Tahrir Square, which almost looks unrecognisable compared to the images of 2011, due to renovation of the site. The hotel is very secure – the building is not only manned by security 24/7, it’s also surrounded by barriers that ensure only guests are allowed in. Thankfully, it doesn’t compromise on the view – the signature ’City View’ rooms offer a splendid sight of the square and the iconic Egyptian museum.

ESSENTIALS Getting there: This hotel, which is an hour’s drive from Cairo International Airport, overlooks the beautiful River Nile, and is close to landmarks including Tahrir Square and Cairo Tower. Location: 1113 Corniche El Nil Street, Cairo, Egypt Prices: This month, rooms start from AED 1,175 per night Booking info: Via ritzcarlton.com or call 800 4789

A PIECE OF HISTORY As previously mentioned, Ritz-Carlton has been careful to retain the heritage of the property, and signs of this are apparent as soon as you walk in. In the lobby hangs two 100% authentic pharaonic tablos that apparently already existed in the building prior to launch.

BAB EL-SHARQ

THE ROOMS But if you were to stay here, my recommendation would be to go for a ’Nile View’ room. It may cost a little extra, but the gorgeous view of the River Nile along with the historic Cairo Tower really is priceless. And this is the main attraction of the building – its status and close proximity to various business hubs in Downtown Cairo. Rooms and service is everything you would expect from a Ritz-Carlton hotel. Staff is incredibly welcoming and friendly, while the rooms are spacious with all the right amenities. Upgrade to Club Lounge level and take advantage of services including priority check-in and dedicated concierge, food and drink throughout the day and free highspeed Wi-Fi. The hotel is home to a lavish spa and fitness centre, and in addition to the already existing F&B outlets, two nightlife venues – NOX and Out of the NOX – are set to open later on this month.

Feel the breeze off the Nile at Bab El-Sharq, where lush greenery adorns the interior and garden. Immerse yourself in a traditional Arabic dining experience with grilled and baked dishes from the wood-fired oven and flavorful shisha.

ALF LEILA WA LEILA Not only does the Nile Ritz-Carlton feature a number of meeting rooms perfect for business, the hotel is also home to the renowned Alf Leila Wa Leila ballroom which has hosted the nuptials of Egypt’s most famous couples over the past half-century.

R E A DY F O R B U S I N E S S For those looking to organize a round-table or conference, the Nile Ritz-Carlton offers a number of meeting rooms. There are eight in total: the newly built Al Qahira ballroom – the largest in the downtown area at 1,700 square metres - Alf Leila Wa Leila (see the right column for more information), plus six others.

RITZ BAR Open daily until 1am, the intimate and elegant Ritz Bar offers local beverages and specialty cocktails created by the hotel’s creative mixologists. Light snacks are also available throughout the evening, while some days also feature live music.

onsidering its history, it would be very hard to miss the location of the new Nile Ritz-Carlton in Cairo. The luxury property’s iconic building was once home to the Nile Hilton – arguably the Egyptian capital’s most famous hotel – which hosted politicians and legendary celebrities, including Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor. In fact, at the time of its opening in 1959, it was considered the antipode to the grand Mena House in the city’s ’outskirts’ of Giza, near the Pyramids. That hotel is in operation to this very day. In 2009, Ritz-Carlton Hotels acquired the Nile Hilton, with a plan to renovate and reopen the five-star property within two years. Then the ’January 25 Revolution’ happened – the series of protests in Tahrir Square, Downtown Cairo between January and February 2011 that saw the now former president Hosni Mubarak being ousted from office. Unsurprisingly, tourism – one of the biggest income sources for the country – quickly declined.

BRILLIANT BARCELONA | GET FIT FOR LIFE... ON VACATION

brilliant barcelona Barcelona may be Spain’s second city, but there’s nothing second-rate about it. EL headed to the home of stunning architecture, delicious cuisine, and one of the biggest football teams in the world | Andrea Anastasiou

T

he capital of Catalonia pulsates with life – world-class art museums, designer restaurants, exclusive bars and designer shops are all here, in a setting that boasts some of the world’s most iconic architecture. During my visit, I found myself repeatedly mesmerised by everything the city has to offer: the extraordinary La Sagrada Família, which makes you marvel at the things humans can create; the winding streets of the Gothic Quarter, which invite you to get lost there for hours; the lively La Rambla boulevard, which teems with street vendors and activity. With a population of more than 1.5 million and neighbourhoods upon neighbourhoods to explore, it is impossible to even scratch the surface during a short visit. I did, however, try my best. Here is my selection of must-do experiences while in town:

EXPLORE THE CENTREPIECE OF BARCELONA No, I’m not talking about La Sagrada Família, but Camp Nou – the home of FC Barcelona (fcbarcelona.com). Any football fan worth his or her salt makes this one of their first stops in the city, and I was no exception. With a capacity for almost 100,000 fans, the stadium is the largest in Europe and holds a certain legendary status for lovers of the beautiful game. The VIP tour gives you behind-the-scene access to areas of the stadium and is led by an official guide from the club. This is all topped off with a glass of bubbly in a VIP area, and the pièce de résistance: a photo of you taken on the pitch.

MARVEL AT GAUDÍ’S CITY Gaudí is one of the many creative geniuses that have left their mark on Barcelona – in fact, everywhere you turn you are reminded of the influence he has on the city, from the tatty La Sagrada Família replicas sold in tourist kiosks, to the Gaudí-esque benches that you find dotted around the centre of town. No visit to the city is complete without marvelling at some of his masterpieces such as Casa Batlló. A great way of getting around and seeing Gaudí’s buildings in all their glory is through a Brightside private guided tour (brightsidetours.com) – you have the opportunity to customise your itinerary so that you visit the sights that you want to see, and

WHILE AWAY THE HOURS IN GRÀCIA If you’re looking to get away from the touristy areas, head to Gràcia – a distinctly Catalan neighbourhood that was a town of its own before it got absorbed into Barcelona’s urban sprawl. The joy of visiting this area lies in wandering the tiny streets and exploring the many sunny squares, cafés, restaurants, and boutique stores that are on offer. The best time of year to visit is in August when the area plays host to the Festa Major de Gràcia festival. Locals compete to have the best-decorated street and the whole neighbourhood has a carnival atmosphere complete with live music, loads of dancing, fireworks, and food and drink. It really is a magical time to be there.

See and be seen at: Tickets For those who enjoy the exclusivity of dining in restaurants that have lengthy waiting lists, Tickets (ticketsbar.es) is the answer. Owned and run by chef Ferran Adrià – the name behind elBulli, the most famous restaurant in the world – Tickets serves up a similar concept but with a gentler price tag. Molecular gastronomy (see picture on the far left) is the name of the game here but in a fun, cabaretlike atmosphere. The waiting list reflects the unwavering popularity of the place – you’re looking at two to three months of waiting time. So book a table well in advance. Getting There All major airlines operating in the GCC – such as Etihad Airways, Emirates and Qatar Airways offer business class flights to Barcelona El Prat Airport (flight time is approximately 7 hours).

you do it all in style in your very own stylish motorcycle sidecar. Away from Gaudí, you’ll also get loads of valuable food tips, as well as the chance to visit the Gothic Quarter.

Check-in: Hotel DO, Plaça Reial Hotel DO is a unique, gastronomic boutique hotel that is housed in a historic building that dates from 1856. Renovated in 2011, the luxury hotel now offers only 18 rooms, most of which have views over the Plaça Reial – a popular tourist spot, especially at night. The rooms are elegant and comfortable, and the personal service that you receive is second to none – little goodies are left in your room every evening for you to enjoy, and you can even have breakfast in bed at no extra charge. The restaurants are also outstanding and offer carefully selected gastronomic menus based on seasonal produce and authentic local dishes. hoteldoreial.com

RETIRING IN GOOD HEALTH

INVEST IN YOUR HEALTH FOR GOOD RETIREMENT The latest HSBC Future of Retirement survey has revealed that nearly half of working age people believe that poor health will make saving for their retirement more difficult. So here’s how to prepare better for the future.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|Wealth

T

he majority of UAE residents are facing the risk of going into retirement with health issues that could prevent them from fulfilling the aspirations they have for later life. This is according to the latest HSBC ‘Future of Retirement’ report that reveals that nearly eight out of ten pre-retirees in the UAE (78%) say that lack of free time (37%) and work commitments (34%) are preventing them from leading a healthier lifestyle. As a result of which, almost half (46%) of the working age population believe that poor health will make saving for their retirement more difficult. With over half of UAE pre-retirees (61%) unable to predict how much they are likely to spend on healthcare in retirement, the study reveals that unless working age people take practical steps to improve their wellbeing, they risk being financially unprepared for a comfortable retirement, especially with other life events coming in the way. ‘Future of Retirement: Healthy New beginnings’ surveyed more than 18,200 people across 17 countries and territories including more than 1,000 in the UAE, with this year’s research revealing that people in the UAE may not be able to experience “a retirement bounce”; an improvement in their health during early retirement. In fact, even with more time to spend on healthy living, UAE is the only country among the 17 countries surveyed, where the difference between respondents rating their health as good for their age is lowest for retirees than pre-retirees.

THE DESIRE TO RETIRE It is no surprise that 29% of pre-retirees aged

above 45 years would like to retire in the next five years in order to spend more time with their family (54%), enjoy the freedom to travel or pursue other interests (42%), or join their partner in retirement (18%), among other reasons. Despite this desire, 22% believe that they will not be able to retire in the next five years due to financial commitments and other life events. “While previous reports showed that pre-retirees find life events, such as buying a home, one of the biggest barriers to retiring, the new findings show that there is more to that,” said Gifford Nakajima, head of wealth development, UAE and MENA, retail banking and wealth management at HSBC Bank Middle East Limited. “A bigger concern that working age people do not seem to identify with, but is increasingly prevalent among retirees, is that healthcare costs and issues will have a significant impact on their hopes to live a comfortable retirement. To put it simply, by starting to save for retirement as early as possible, working age people can improve their chances of retiring when they want.” He continues: “With enough reason, a period of improved health can be an unexpected advantage of retirement for many people. However, working age people should not wait until they have left their jobs to take active steps to improve their health; instead, they should make use of the country’s excellent infrastructure of medical and healthy living services to pursue a healthier lifestyle.”

Five ways to prepare for retirement ① Know your retirement needs. According to experts, most individuals will need 70% of their preretirement income to maintain their standard of living once they stop working. ② Start saving now. Try and put away at least 10% of your salary every month. ③ Open a separate saving account. Avoid temptation by sending the money to another account or get involved with a scheme such as National Bonds. ④ Consider basic investment principles. Get in touch with your bank or financial advisor for more information on how you can diversify your portfolio. ⑤ Open a retirement account abroad. Much like contributing to a separate savings account, an account abroad will also make you less likely to tap into it for funds.
