The Emerging Leaders program, a semester-long leadership training, providing an opportunity for students to develop introductory student leadership skills, network with other student leaders and administration on campus, and engage in campus and community involvement. The Advanced Leaders program provides a unique opportunity for participants to network with executives in the St. Louis area. This year’s program is the first year that we incorporated leadership theory into the curriculum. Based on Kolb’s Experiential Leadership Theory, participants went through a cycle of concrete experiences consisting of workshops, site visits and a mock interview and resume critique with career services, active observations through weekly reflections, abstract conceptualization through the development of an

action plan, and active experimentation by applying these skills within their organizations and the presentation of their leadership portfolios. The UMSL Chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success developed an executive board, finalized a constitution and completed all steps to become a registered student organization on campus. The Leadership Discovery Summit was an interactive, one-day conference focused on engaging and educating students in the areas of diversity and social justice. Future conferences will be based on the Social Change Model. In fall 2015, the Office of Student Life, in conjunction with departments across campus, implemented and launched the inaugural Women’s Leadership Institute—a one-day conference designed to address a range of leadership challenges faced by women, including networking, career advancement, moving beyond perceptions of women in the workforce, and thriving in diverse cultures.

New Student Programs received strategic planning funds in 2014 to pilot the Triton Overnight Experience. For the second year, this summer New Student Programs hosted two Summer Orientation dates provided the opportunity for new students attending the program to stay on campus in Oak Hall the evening beforehand. Triton Overnight Experience allows students the opportunity to become more familiar with our on-campus housing facilities, to interact with other new students, and to build meaningful connections with our Orientation Leaders. Get Plugged In Live Webinar Series New Student Programs launched a new webinar series this summer to offer more detailed information to student and continue staying connected in the month of July. In collaboration with other offices including Sorority and Fraternity Life, Career Services, Student Life and Residential Life and Housing, we debuted four live 45-minute webinars that were live feed for participants to ask questions in person, and also view a recordable video on our website for an additional resource.
