We hope you know how big of an accomplishment it is to be admitted, and you should be proud of this achievement—we definitely are! Before you attend Orientation, please review the New Student Checklist to confirm all the items listed up to “after Orientation” are complete. This will assist in a smoother transition process.

REGISTER FOR PARENT ORIENTATION

Make sure your parent/family members review the Orientation Preview booklet, for a glance at the Parent Orientation experience.

We encourage all students to apply for financial aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students can submit the FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov and the priority deadline is February 1. We also recommend checking and accepting/declining your award packages through your MyView.UMSL.edu web portal. Click on Self Service>Financial Aid. Contact Financial Aid with questions about scholarships, loans or grants at 314-516-5526 or financialaid@umsl.edu.

ORIENTATION

Orientation is a required program that allows you to meet with other new students, learn about University resources, meet with an advisor to register and finalize your class schedule, and much more. Get ready to make some new friends, and learn how to navigate the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

WEEKS OF WELCOME August 21 - October 1, 2017. Make sure to pick up the WOW Booklet publication on Move-In Day or at the Help-A-Triton tables all around campus during the first two days of classes. The WOW booklet will include six weeks of programming and activities occurring on campus.

TRITON TAKE-OFF WEEKEND August 18-20, 2017. Watch for your email in early August for information on your Triton Take-Off Weekend team number. Current student leaders will be your guide through the 3-day weekend schedule of 15+ activities that occur prior to the first day of classes. GETTING READY FOR THE ORIENTATION EXPERIENCE - READ THIS GUIDE BOOKLET On behalf of the Division of Student Affairs, welcome to the University of Missouri-St. Louis community. With this booklet of information in your hands, you might be feeling any number of emotions: relief, excitement, anxiety or curiosity. There is a great deal to take in with this booklet. Please take your time and read through it. Share it with your family members as well. UMSL’s Orientation is an extensive program that will focus on academics, traditions, and community. Through formal and informal meetings with academic advisors and faculty members, programming around campus, and community building activities---Orientation commits that you will leave Orientation prepared to confidently begin your UMSL experience. Throughout your time during Orientation, there will be opportunities to have meaningful conversations and develop lasting friendships. Students who come to Orientation with an open mind and a willingness to engage with others are the ones who get the most out of the experience. The Orientation program aims to strengthen your connection to the university and provide you with a comprehensive set of personal and educational programs and resources that will assist you in making a successful transition to our vibrant community. We are here to help you capture new experiences and opportunities as you begin your UMSL journey. Ahead of you lay unlimited possibilities. In an effort to provide families with specific information about the university and campus resources available, a specific tailored parent program will be provided. REGISTER FOR ORIENTATION Students who have confirmed their enrollment, will be able to register for their specific Orientation date and pay their confirmation fee. The confirmation fee is a non-refundable $75 for freshman, and $50 for transfer students fee that must be paid in advance of the Orientation session. • Parent and Family Member Guest Orientation Fee • $25 – includes Orientation materials, and meals Please check the appropriate guest options on the online orientation registration site. *We recommend that parents and guests register at least 2-days prior to their Orientation session to allow for final preparation and a quicker check-in process.

DATES OF ORIENTATION SESSIONS Each of the Orientation sessions will accommodate approximately 300 new students and family members. Below is a list of all our orientation dates. When you registered online, you should have received an email confirmation with your date, guest numbers, map to campus, and parking pass. If you need to change your date, please re-login and complete this at least 2-days prior to your scheduled Orientation date.

EXTENDED ORIENTATION: TRITON TAKE-OFF WEEKEND As a student who has registered for an Orientation session, you are automatically registered to attend the Triton Take-Off Weekend: Friday, August 18-20, 2017. Attending Triton Take-Off Weekend is highly recommended as it is your ExtendedOrientation program that is three days prior to classes beginning. TRITON OVERNIGHT EXPERIENCE Admitted students starting their academic journey will have an opportunity to stay in an individual room in Oak Residence Hall the night before their Orientation session. The program will begin at 4:00 pm with check-in at Oak Hall. Triton Overnight Experience (Two Options): • Monday, June 5, 2017 • Friday, June 16, 2017 Students who participate in the overnight option will have an opportunity to meet other new students who you might live with once school begins, and will also be able to learn more about the UMSL on-campus living experience and meet with your Orientation Leaders. This will give you further opportunities to ask questions about the campus in the informal setting of the residence hall. The overnight component will allow you to relax the night before and be ready to wake up the next morning to complete and be engaged in your New Student Orientation session. There is a $25.00 fee for students to pay and register for this overnight program. This fee will cover linens and bedding provided in Oak Hall, dinner, and the entire overnight component. To sign up for the Triton Overnight Experience, please visit umsl.edu/confirm *This overnight experience is not mandatory if interested in attending the June 6 or June 17 NSO session date.

TAKE REQUIRED ALEKS MATH PLACEMENT EXAM All UMSL students must demonstrate appropriate math proficiency before registering for math classes. UMSL offers a convenient online math placement test called ALEKS to assess your math proficiency. DO I NEED TO TAKE THE ALEKS TEST? All undergraduate freshmen must take the ALEKS math placement test before orientation. All other students: before registering for a math class, you must demonstrate proficiency through an ALEKS math placement score or transfer credit for the appropriate course. REVIEW MATERIALS Free online study materials are available at www.aleks.com/umsl/ppl TAKING THE TEST ONLINE • Go to www.mygateway.umsl.edu • Enter your password and SSO ID • Go to “My Organization” • Click on “Student Math Placement” • Click the “Math Placement” link in the left-hand corner to begin the test The test is also available at: www.aleks.com/umsl/ppl (sign in with your SSO ID and password)

SSO ID In your admission letter, you received information about activating your SSO ID (single sign-on identification) and your Student Number. You will use your SSO ID to access your student accounts for logging into MyView, MyGateway, and other UMSL systems. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR SSO ID: Please visit: http://myview.umsl.edu and click the “Look Up My User ID (SSO ID)” link, type in your Student Number and click “Search”. Write down your SSO ID. *If you do not know your Student Number, please contact the Admissions Office. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR ACCOUNT PASSWORD: Please visit: http://myview.umsl.edu and click the “Forgot My Password” link. You will need to follow the instructions carefully to create a new password using this process. Be


mindful of the password requirements. When you have created your account password: WRITE IT DOWN AND KEEP SECURE! Remember, University passwords are case-sensitive. (If you are having any problems looking up your SSO ID or resetting your password contact the Technology Support Center at: (314) 516-6034.

TRITON EMAIL ACCOUNT SETUP As part of your admission to UMSL, you are given an email account for your use. All official University communication is directed through the UMSL email account. It is very important that you check this account regularly for important information regarding registration, University events and emergency notification. You can access your account through the MyGateway portal or directly at the UMSL website at www.umsl.edu. However, before you can access your account for the first time, you will need to change your password. If you have not set up your email account, please contact the Help Desk at: www.umsl.edu/technology/tsc/ or call 314-516-6034.

MYVIEW AND MYGATEWAY MyView is a self-service system which enables students to access campus finances, academic records, personal information and enrollment. MyGateway is a self-service site that consolidates many of the resources available to students, faculty, and staff. The site features single sign on, so you can use your UMSL SSO ID and password to sign-in once and access all of these services. From this portal, you’ll be able to: • Check grades and class schedule • Check your email • Participate in Blackboard classes • Access the Writing Lab and NetTutors • Participate in LiveText classes • View the campus calendar and job listings • Link to DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System)

WHAT TO BRING TO ORIENTATION ❏❏ Your e-confirmation packet and parking permit ❏❏ One of the following forms of identification: (will need this to check-in and receive TritonCard – UMSL’s official student identification card) • Valid state-issued driver’s license with photo • State-issued photo ID card • Passport with photo • Military ID card ❏❏ UMSL SSO (Single Sign-On) ID, Student Number and password ❏❏ A copy of unofficial transcripts, grades, course list, etc. from College Credit Plus or courses taken at another institution if you are currently enrolled in classes and have not yet submitted an official transcript to the Office of Admissions. ❏❏ A jacket or sweater (students often get cold inside the buildings) ❏❏ Spending money (if you want to buy UMSL gear or textbooks at the TritonStore) ❏❏ An Umbrella (in case it rains)

TRAVEL TO CAMPUS FOR ORIENTATION PARKING

When you arrive on campus, parking will be available anywhere in Lot E and overflow into our parking garage across from the Millennium Student Center (highlighted on the enclosed map). Please display your e-parking pass from your e-confirmation packet in your front window.

SMOKE-FREE UMSL

UMSL is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is not permitted on UMSL property. You may smoke in your personal vehicle with the windows up, only.

During Orientation, students will learn to navigate through these two portals presented by orientation leaders.

DURING ORIENTATION Orientation programs will be held in the Millennium Student Center. You will receive all Orientation materials at this time. NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION (NSO) NSO is a full day on campus program REQUIRED for all newly admitted first year students. Orientation is mandatory for all first time college students and transfer students. It is required to stay for the full day program that will conclude at 5:00 pm. The main program will begin at 8:30 a.m. If you are interested in taking a tour of Oak Residence Hall or University Meadows, there are tours promptly at 8:00 a.m. at the housing locations. TRANSFER STUDENT ORIENTATION As an incoming transfer student, we understand that you may have previous college experience. All transfer students who have accumulated more than 24 college credit hours must complete one of the Orientation options: TSO or Online Orientation.

*Academic Advising is not scheduled during your TSO. Due to the varied advising needs and availability, transfer students need to contact your academic unit to schedule a separate appointment (see page 15). At Orientation, we will acquaint you with the online registration process that you will use during your career at UMSL. Students are encouraged to be advised prior to Orientation. TRANSFER ONLINE ORIENTATION In an effort to assist you in learning the UMSL resources and information there is an online tutorial. The Online Orientation can be accessed in your e-confirmation email with directions on how to complete. Once you complete the Online Orientation, you can turn in the completion page in the Office of New Student Programs in 366 Millennium Student Center to obtain a Triton Manual, lanyard, Weeks of Welcome booklet and a free t-shirt. The New Student Programs Office will also be informed of your completion of the Online Orientation to recall the Orientation hold off your account.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION (ISO) ISO is a three-day program for newly admitted international students with 24 or fewer U.S. college credit hours. Visaholding international students are required to attend ISO August 14-16, 2017. On the first day of Orientation, bring your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, St. Louis address, and emergency contact information for yourself and any dependents. ISO will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at UMSL as an international student. You will meet other new international students and current students who will help you transition smoothly to life in St. Louis.

PARENT AND FAMILY ORIENTATION EXPERIENCE Orientation is designed to help both families and students understand resources, opportunities, policies, and offices that will guide you for the next few years. The support and encouragement you provide will be enhanced if you have a clear understanding of the educational and social opportunities here at UMSL and your role during this important time of self-discovery for your student. Many of the activities offered during the Orientation session are open to both families and students. A separate schedule includes several informational sessions for family members only, while the individual academic advising session and small group discussions are for students only. For many, this will be your first experience enrolling a child in college, while others are “seasoned” veterans. Regardless, the interaction among families during Orientation continues to be a favorite UMSL memory.

DURING ORIENTATION STUDENT ID CARD

EMPLOYMENT ON CAMPUS Visit studentjobs.umsl.edu for a variety of ways to work on campus. They are constant updates and posting every day, so make sure to keep looking for the perfect opportunity.

The TritonCard is used for: • UMSL Student Identification • Access to dining meal plans • Checking out books from the library • Access to the Recreation & Wellness Center • Attending UMSL athletic events FREE • Charging purchases at the TritonStore to your student account • Access to residence halls • Check-in for appointments with advisors

TUITION AND FEES

During your Orientation session, you must bring a government-issued photo ID to receive your TritionCard (i.e. a driver’s license, state I.D., passport, etc.).

During your Orientation session, you will finalize your course registration and class schedule, and attend a Money Matters session. During this session, the Cashier’s Office will highlight the responsibilities and general payment information for your tuition and fees, discuss the process on how to pay and set up an Additional Authorized Access, and navigate through the MyView portal to preview a summary of the financial charges. The charges will represent the cost of the hours in which you have enrolled, room and board, and additional services (e.g., financial aid, scholarships, and any additional fees). The Money Matters session will provide valuable information and access to staff members from Financial Aid and the Cashier’s Office. The goal is to help provide students and their families a greater understanding of the financial landscape as they navigate their college career.

SUMMARY OF CHARGES

TritonCard photographs will be taken at Orientation, or you can submit your own photo to use on your TritonCard prior to Orientation by visiting umsl.edu/tritoncard and click on Photo Upload. Pay close attention to the photo requirements!

The UMSL Triton Store is located on the second floor of the Millennium Student Center and serves as the campus headquarters for course materials, technology, supplies, and officially licensed UMSL and Triton spirit wear! They offer the largest selection of discounted used, new, and rental books. They also have an early bird reservation program. Residential Life & Housing and University Meadows are excited to welcome you to campus and become your new home! Living on campus your first year is an amazing experience, and we are here to help you in that transition. UMSL has many housing options that complement your major, academic goals, or interests. Wondering what Oak Hall and University Meadows oncampus living options look like? Arrive early to Orientation and participate in a tour of our South Campus on-campus living options. Take time to see the facilities, programs, amenities, and learn from current residents and staff about the unbeatable benefits of what living on campus can offer our students. MENIGITIS IMMUNIZATIONS All students residing in on-campus housing must have received the meningococcal vaccine unless a signed statement of medical or religious exemption is submitted to the University Health Services. Missouri legislation requires students in University owned housing to either 1) show documentation of meningococcal vaccine received or 2) sign a waiver that indicates they have been provided educational materials, but have chosen not to receive the vaccine at this time. To obtain the waiver for meningococcal vaccine, the form may be downloaded and printed from: umsystem.edu/media/fa/management/records/forms/other/ um55.pdf

LIVING AND LEARNING COMMUNITIES (LLC) Here at UMSL, first-year students have the opportunity to reside in living and learning communities (LLCs). By living in an LLC, you will discover an avenue for making friends and connecting with the campus community. These communities are the perfect place to embrace your sense of adventure, broaden your horizons, and make the most of your college years. HOW TO APPLY

Sign a Housing Contract online at www.umsl.edu/reslife When filling out your housing contract, be sure to select which LLC aligns with your academic field of study. The Living and Learning Communities are on a first come-first served basis and will fill up quickly. We recommend applying and finalizing your housing contract before June 1, 2017.

OTHER INFO TO KNOW VETERANS & SERVICE MEMBERS UMSL has a strong military heritage and is proud to have graduated thousands of veterans. The Department of Military and Veterans Studies was created in 2013 to improve on our already-great tradition. Our mission is to enable success for current and future veterans on campus and to create a researched-based curriculum for students who are interested in studying the veteran experience.

Ask your academic advisor about our veterans-only orientation course! The Veterans Transition class (MVS 1100) is one-meeting-aweek, 1-credit hour elective that is designed for incoming freshmen and transfer student veterans. The purpose is to introduce students to campus, veteran-specific resources, develop study skills, and explore major and career options. This class is covered by GI Bill Benefits and can be taken in place of other first-year experience or university studies courses. Visit us online at umsl.edu/~mvs/ for more information. UMSL VETERANS CENTER The UMSL Veterans Center (211 Clark Hall) is a one-stop resource center, staffed by student veterans and full-time personnel, committed to facilitating and coordinating the overall integration of veterans into the UMSL academic community. AFTER ORIENTATION TRITON TAKE-OFF WEEKEND: AUG 18-20, 2017

NOT ANYMORE PROGRAM Not Anymore is an online, interpersonal violence prevention program that provides critical information about: consent, bystander intervention, sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, stalking, and much more. To succssfully complete the program, you will need to earn at least 80% on the post-test, which you may retake until you achieve this score. The training will take about one hour. All UMSL students are required to complete

Triton Take-Off Weekend includes a series of events designed to act as an extension of the new student orientation process, and to welcome all new students the days leading up to their first week of classes. The events will allow new students to meet fellow peers and learn even more about life at UMSL and how to have a successful transition. Take the Training: • Log-on to Not Anymore through the UMSL portal at studentsuccess.org/SP/umsl • Enter your UMSL SSO username and password. • You will be taken to the Not AnymoreAccount Setup Page. Follow the instructions provided. To leave and reenter the program where you left off, simply repeat the instructions above. • If you run into problems with the program, do not start over. Contact us through the HELP button, or at terrylynn.pearlman@studentsuccess.org, and we will assist you. • You will retain access to the porgram until at least May. You also will receive follow-up contacts from Student Success™ highlighting key program information.

Weeks of Welcome is another way to connect incoming students with the University throughout the first six weeks. Our office partners with other offices and organizations on campus to provide out-of-classroom programs and developmental opportunities to meet the transitional needs of first year students, transfer, and commuter students. More than 100 events are held just for students in the fall and spring semesters including movies, picnics, departmental programs, lots of free food and traditions.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR ADVISOR All student new to UMSL will need to meet with an academic advisor to register for courses. To schedule an appointment with an advisor please reference your specific college or school listed below. You are encouraged to take a look at the Schedule of Classes on MyView (myview.umsl.edu) as well as the 4 year plan for your major in the Bulletin (bulletin.umsl.edu) prior to your appointment. Your advisors look forward to working with you to create your academic plan at UMSL! NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION All new freshmen will meet with an academic advisor in person on their Orientation date. TRANSFER STUDENT ORIENTATION AND ONLINE STUDENT ORIENTATION Transfer students are encouraged to make advising appointments as soon as possible upon completion of their Enrollment Confirmation.
