Introduction
The University of Missouri- St. Louis recognizes the need for increasing the capacity of individuals to take leadership roles in all professions and sectors while on campus and beyond. The Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate is a co-curricular certification available to students at the University of Missouri—St. Louis who are interested in enhancing their leadership knowledge, application and skills through a variety of leadership opportunities. Grounded in the Student Leadership Competencies, the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate assists students in developing 60 leadership competencies, divided into eight categories, which reflect: • • • •
Knowledge - Understanding of the competency Value - Believing that the competency is important Ability - Motivation or skills to engage in a certain behavior Behavior - Effectively engaging in the competency
The Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate is a self-paced, comprehensive, leadership development program designed to encourage and recognize student leadership, education, and experiences at UMSL. Prior involvement activities can also apply, as long as they occurred on UMSL’s campus. Community service done prior to starting the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate will not count towards the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate. Students will be added to the Office of Student Involvement Leadership Programs portal in TritonSync and will be classified as a Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate candidate. This will provide access to the necessary forms and allow the Office of Student Involvement staff to track their progress.
Qualifications
To be considered for the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate, a student must: • Be a currently-enrolled, degree seeking student at UMSL in good standing • Maintain cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher throughout the duration of the certificate • Have an in interest in improving leadership skills and abilities

Steps to successfully complete the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate: 1. Complete the Statement of Intent Form 2. Complete the online Student Leadership Competencies Assessment 3. Mentorship
This component of the program provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their leadership development. It also enables students to articulate how their experiences have enhanced their time at UMSL and have better prepared them for a successful future. The mentoring relationship is one of the most critical aspects of the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership 9
Certificate. As its foundation, the purpose of a leadership mentor is to help guide students through the process of obtaining their co-curricular certification. Participants are expected to meet with their mentor at least four (4) times while enrolled in the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate program. a. You must notify the Office of Student Involvement of your mentor. We will send them a Mentor
Manual. If you do not have a mentor, the Office of Student Involvement will work with you to find a mentor.
b. Your leadership mentor can be a faculty member, staff member, advisor to your organization, or a community leader who is willing to discuss your development as a leader.
c. You should meet with your leadership mentor at least four (4) times for one (1) hour at a time. The session should follow this format:
Session 1: Introduction—Discuss your current leadership and involvement experiences. Start brainstorming Leadership Legacy goals. Discuss the Student Leadership Competencies you are strong in and areas of growth. Develop an action plan for the Student Leadership Competencies in which you would like to develop. Session 2: Leadership Philosophy- Discuss your leadership philosophy, as well as how to apply these concepts to your future goals. Revisit Leadership Legacy progress. Session 3: Revisit the action plan developed for growth among the Student Leadership Competencies. Complete a resume review and start developing an e-portfolio. Share updates on Leadership Legacy development. Session 4: Work together on crafting your leadership legacy and finessing e-portfolio.
d. Submit a mentor reflection form after each meeting.
The student’s mentor must write a recommendation letter to be showcased in the student’s e-portfolio.
Leadership Legacy
Leadership is about leaving a legacy—something that will live on after you leave the UMSL community. In lieu of a capstone project, participants will develop a Leadership Legacy. The Leadership Legacy represents an opportunity to make a lasting, significant contribution to a student organization and/or the UMSL community. This could be demonstrated through the following: • Significant contribution to the success of a student organization through providing a lasting impact on it and/or the UMSL community in the implementation of a new and successful program/event, strengthening and improving an existing program(s)/event(s), and/or execution of new initiatives. • Collaboration with others in the successful implementation of programs, events, initiatives, etc. that will leave a lasting impact on a student organization and/or the UMSL community. • Crafting and proposing a new/revised campus policy • Examples: Walls of Intolerance, Relay for Life, ABC Step Show, Drag Show, etc.
Students must first submit a Leadership Legacy Proposal Form to ensure that their legacy qualifies. Once approved, the student must submit a reflection form which requires five (5) letters of recommendation that can speak to their legacy: • Three (3) from peers • Two (2) from faculty/staff/administrator or • One (1) from faculty/staff/ administrator and one (1) from a community leader

Exit Presentation
Once participants have completed all requirements for the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate, they must complete an Exit Presentation in which they will present their e-portfolio that showcases a reference from their mentor, and an overview of their Leadership Legacy and leadership philosophy, as well as what they have learned throughout the certificate program at the end of the year reception held each semester.
Frequently Asked Questions Who is eligible to enroll in this program? Students must be in good academic standing to participate in the program and degree seeking. Otherwise, any UMSL students—whether full time or part-time—undergraduate or graduate level—is welcomed to participate. How long does it take to finish the program? The Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate is a self-paced program. It is highly recommended that students allow at least four (4) semesters to dedicate to the program and complete all the requirements to experience the full benefits. How do I get certified? Certification is achieved by obtaining a total of 200 points of documented leadership engagement and community service, meeting with a leadership mentor at least four times throughout the program, developing a Leadership Legacy and completing an exit presentation. Can I use previous experience to go towards the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate requirements? Yes, prior campus engagement and education activities that occurred on UMSL’s campus can be applied towards your point requirements, as long as appropriate reflection documentation is provided in TritonSync. Community service done prior to starting the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate will not count towards the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate requirements. I have a leadership experience that is not listed; can I count it towards my requirements? If you held/are holding a leadership position not listed and/or completed a leadership program not listed, contact the Coordinator of Leadership Education. Each inquiry will be handled on a case-bycase basis. Who are the mentors that students are paired with? Can I pick my own mentor? What is a Leadership Legacy? The Leadership Legacy is the final step in completing the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate. The Leadership Legacy represents an opportunity to make a lasting, significant contribution to a student organization and/or the UMSL community. This could be demonstrated through the following: • Significant contribution to the success of a student organization through providing a lasting

Does the certificate go on my transcript? No, the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate is a recognition program, but is not one that will go on your official university transcript. However, students who complete the program may add the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certificate to their co-curricular transcript if they wish. Participants that complete the program will be awarded a certificate along with cords to wear at Commencement. Why should an employer or graduate school value the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certification? Most employers and graduate schools seek individuals who have proven to be leaders, have demonstrated their leadership abilities, and have been actively involved on their campus and in the local community. Students who complete the Chancellor’s Engaged Leadership Certification have participated in a comprehensive, leadership development program which exceeds the quality of the typical college student experience.
