The aim of this project is to determine how the cancer cells are dying and which drugs are the most effective. Dr. Reif will share the current progress of the project, which could open the door to novel cancer treatments in the future.
Why Representation Matters, Adria Goldman, Ph.D., associate professor of communication and digital studies
In this session, we will explore the significance of media representation of different types of people and its real-world implications on audiences and society at large. With a focus on depictions in television and streaming shows, we will have a
critical discussion of media and its relationship to identity and culture. Together, we will examine historical and contemporary representations, considering how they inform, reflect, and represent—or misrepresent—society.
Campus Civil War Walk, Michael Spencer ’03, associate professor of historic preservation
Mary Washington’s Fredericksburg campus has many Civil War relics still in place. Join Professor Spencer on a walking tour as he points out places on campus that hold the history of the Civil War.

Pieces of History: Student Voices from UMW Archives
, Angie White Kemp ’11, head of Special Collections & Digital Scholarship, and Sarah Appleby ’06, university archivist
Featuring the scrapbook collection and other notable artifacts contributed to the archives by students and alumni, the staff of UMW Special Collections & University Archives will share glimpses into life as a student throughout Mary
Washington’s 116-year history and how we work to preserve and build on those perspectives.
View, hear, and handle materials created by students as we examine how these items echo through our community and shape UMW’s institutional narrative.
Beyond Genius: A Journey Through the Characteristics and Legacies of Transformative Minds, Bulent Atalay, Ph.D., professor emeritus of physics, author, and artist
What happens when the objective, scientific part of the mind intersects with the subjective, artistic part? Learn how combining disparate passions can lead to amazing results. Understanding the patterns of creativity will provide an entirely new appreciation of the work of transformative geniuses—and perhaps that of others, too.
An Exploration of the City Cemetery
Andréa Livi Smith, Ph.D., professor of historic preservation
This walking tour will introduce alumni to the history of graves and burial grounds and
the tradition and artistry of headstones and monuments. Using the Fredericksburg City Cemetery as an example, we will see how symbols, locations, layout, materials, and wording change over time. We also will learn about the challenges in preserving these sites today.
Session 3 • 2 – 3:15 p.m.
Fifty Years on the Heights: The Lighter Side of My Half-Century at Mary Wash, William B. Crawley Jr., Ph.D., distinguished professor emeritus of history
From the perspective of five decades at Mary Washington, Dr. Crawley will look back at some of the most memorable (and often humorous) events he observed during his lengthy career. Included will be anecdotes about various people—students, faculty, administrators, and alumni—he encountered through the years.
Being (In)Consistently In Your Right Mind: Handedness and Psychology, Marcus Leppanen, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology
While handedness seems like a simple physical difference between people, research evidence
has demonstrated that our hand usage is related to the ways in which we think. This talk will explore some of the ways in which we measure handedness in the laboratory and how those measurements have been connected to aspects of our psychology. Dr. Leppanen will focus our discussion primarily on findings related to memory and personality.
SATURDAY, JUNE 1
Session 4 • 9 – 10:15 a.m.
Why College Newspapers Matter, Sushma Subramanian, Ph.D., associate professor of communication and digital studies
The U.S. spends billions of dollars on higher education every year, but media coverage of higher education news and institutions is dwindling as newsroom budgets are cut.
College journalists have stepped into this void, exposing issues from the mishandling of campus crimes to the mistreatment of athletes.
But these student journalists often don’t have the same protections as professionals.
Dr. Subramanian, adviser to UMW’s student newspaper (The Weekly Ringer ), will argue that
student journalists should not be censored and that they deserve stronger First Amendment protections. World’s Spiciest Beer?, Sarah Smith ’12, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of chemistry
Have you ever wondered how scientists determine how spicy something is? In this session, Dr. Smith will teach us what makes foods spicy, how we measure that spiciness, and how UMW students collaborated with the local Maltese Brewing Company to attempt a Guinness World Record for the world’s spiciest beer.
Biodiversity of the UMW Campus: Our Beautiful Trees, Alan B. Griffith, Ph.D., professor of biology
The first thing most people notice at UMW is the beauty of campus and its variety of trees.
Beginning in 2015, biology students assisted in developing a “tree map” to document our landscape. Join Dr. Griffith on a walk through campus highlighting some of the trees that contribute to its natural beauty.
