UMW is a place where students can find an intellectual home that values diversity, immerses students in applied learning experiences, promotes service and community engagement and delivers all students with rich opportunities for developing their digital and technological skills. Here, you’ll find students serious about their college education. Faculty who love teaching above all else. Memorable experiences far beyond the classroom and campus. Game-changing opportunities in our nation’s capital and the capital of our Commonwealth, both just down the road. The right size. The right setting. The right value. We’re the right place to make things happen. The world’s got problems. Let’s find solutions. The future’s unclear. Let’s put it in focus. Life’s a series of questions. Let’s find the answers. The path’s not paved. Let’s go off-roading. Together.

Programs At this school, learn is an action verb. We encourage and support the passionate, curious minds at work here. Our students and professors are fearless explorers – and creators – of knowledge. They work together to turn values into vision and ideas into action. You’ll be a great fit at UMW if you’re looking for the following:
Tough, rewarding academics If we didn’t push you, we wouldn’t be doing you any favors.
Small, interactive classes Long, droning lectures? Not here. Most classes are small enough that everyone can join the conversation. Get ready to jump in.
Brilliant, approachable faculty Your professors teach the classes, not TAs. They may be award-winning experts, but they know and care about you, too.
Real, meaningful support Here’s what a 13:1 student/faculty ratio actually means: your professors and advisors have time for you. Their doors are open.
Exciting, useful experiences We’ll help you find your passion – and pursue it. In the classroom, the research lab, the workplace, the community and the world.
Honor System We hold each other accountable at UMW. Students run our honor system, and it’s simple: No lying. No cheating. No stealing. Period.
Pick your passion. A college education is an engine. It will drive any career you choose — and you have many choices at UMW. Majors

DISTINCTIVE OPPORTUNITIES First-Year Seminars
Hurley Convergence Center
“Is Trying to be Happier as Futile as Trying to be Taller?” There are all kinds of diverse, fascinating topics to tackle in your first-year seminar. It’s basically a road trip for your brain. With no more than 15 students per course, it’s designed to be small in size – but big on discussion. You’ll learn a ton, make friends and walk away a better writer and presenter.
Knowledge of all things digital is a 21st-century skill set. The LEED Silver certified Convergence Center is an “academic commons” with 24/7 access for group studying or hanging out with friends. The 75,000 sq. ft. Jepson Science Center received a $22 million makeover and a three-story, 40,000 sq. ft. addition. Classrooms, labs, lecture halls and computer labs, all equipped for today’s STEM needs. It’s also green in more ways than one: designed to be LEED Silver certified, with solar panels and sustainable technologies, and equipped with a green wall of native vegetation on College Ave.
James Farmer Multicultural Center We believe in the dignity and worth of every person at UMW. The value of a community rich in diversity, too. But understanding and appreciation of diversity – in race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, age or culture – doesn’t just happen. The James Farmer Multicultural Center helps educate us on diversity issues, build relationships and create a supportive, welcoming environment for all, especially underrepresented students. It’s named for Dr. James L. Farmer, Jr., a key leader of the Civil Rights movement and a Distinguished Professor of History and American Studies here for more than a decade. We’re committed to honoring his legacy by striving to be more empathetic, engaged, well-rounded citizens of the world. That means open minds, new ideas, honest conversation – and poetry, theater, music, food, literature, and dance, as well.

Proximity We’ve got the perfect blend of “tucked away” and “close to everything.” You don’t have to choose at UMW. Here, you get a beautiful, traditional college campus. An environment designed for learning, safe and sheltered from the distractions of the hectic world around us. You get Fredericksburg, a city that celebrates a rich history while growing in the modern world. And, you get a gateway to anywhere else you want to go – from D.C. to Dubai.
CLOSE TO OPPORTUNITY Beauty and brains make a great combination. If you enjoy tree-lined walkways and stately Georgian architecture – think lots of brick, grand entrances and ornate columns – you’ll love exploring UMW. It has that classic collegiate feel. And, it’s full of Instagram and Snap-worthy shots at every turn. Within these picturesque buildings, of course, you’ll find brilliant people doing groundbreaking work. A century’s worth of academic legacy. What this beautiful campus really represents is opportunity.

Community Engagement Students will have the opportunity both in and outside the classroom to work collaboratively with partners to make our communities better. Students will volunteer at organizations around Fredericksburg, conduct research to benefit local institutions, take study abroad trips to learn about a new community, and promote voter education and engagement.
Digital Knowledge Students must complete one digital intensive course. This will ensure every student develops digital fluency skills and capabilities, with the ability to adapt to the inevitable changes in the digital landscape.
Experiential Learning All students must complete at least one faculty-supervised experience challenging them to go outside the bounds of the typical classroom. Think internships, research, community service or study abroad.
Research
In 2019, over 200 students participated in Into the Streets, one of six annual events hosted by UMW’s COAR (Community Outreach and Resources). The goal is to encourage students to explore community service, get to know more about the area, and to give back to the community.
Education should extend beyond the classroom. It’s important to us that you get hands-on experience in the areas that interest you. UMW invests more than $275,000 each in a typical year to support student research, fieldwork, travel and scholarships. You can conduct research in any area of study – it’s not all lab coats and microscopes (though our scanning electron microscope is pretty cool). Your work might just make a splash beyond campus, too. Many students present their work both to their peers and at conferences.
Life After Mary Washington Mary Wash seeks to prepare students for life after UMW by connecting the liberal arts to career success by preparing undergraduates to succeed in the transition from college to career and to thrive in the dynamic and ever-changing 21st century world of work. Students will leave with the skills and competencies that are valued by employers.

CAMPUS = HOME It’s a time-honored tradition: going off to college, living on campus. At UMW, we add a twist. You’ll be part of a Living Learning Community (LLC), clustered in the residence halls. It’s based on your first-year seminar. You’ll have something in common with your neighbors, and you’ll share experiences in and out of the classroom. As an upperclassman, you’ll have a lot of housing choices – on campus or in the neighborhoods around us. They’re all part of the community. Of course, off campus you might not find choices your favorite home improvement shows would gush over, like: • Soaring, 12-foot ceilings, hardwood floors and sweeping staircases (Ball Hall) • Sophisticated apartments with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances (Eagle Landing) • State-of-the-art modern living and collaborative spaces housed in a historically preserved building in the heart of our campus (Willard Hall)

Bench Sitting Our way of saying “people-watching, a little friendly eavesdropping and occasional squirrel-watching while sitting along the campus walk.” Even the Urban Dictionary defines bench sitting as a uniquely UMW activity.

Spirit Week/Homecoming Games, lip sync contests, concerts, food, prizes, and varsity athletic contests ramp up Eagle pride and excitement before we welcome alumni back for Homecoming Weekend.
Multicultural Fair Attracting 4,000 to 5,000 people each year, the Multicultural Fair is a big deal, for us and the whole community. It’s a day of multicultural entertainment, international and American food, children’s activities and ethnic craft vendors.
Spring Formal One of the grandest events of the year, spring formal typically includes an elegant dinner and dancing. There’s an element of surprise, too – students learn the location only once they’re on the buses heading over.
Step Show Competition Members of colleges’ and universities’ various Greek-letter organizations around the state, as well as local high school step teams, participate in this high-energy, entertaining competition where the dance form uses the entire body to resonate complex rhythmic beats and sounds.
Devil/Goat Day One of the oldest traditions at UMW, held right before the last day of spring classes. Even graduation years are “Goats.” Odd graduation years are “Devils.” Students unwind at a spring carnival with games, inflatables, food and a DJ. Devils and Goats compete for prizes and bragging rights.

Price Cost and value are not the same – but UMW delivers on both. The investment you make in college is no small thing. Here’s our promise: we will invest right back in you every day. Beyond our financial aid, scholarship and grant programs – which are generous – it’s about the experience you have here. It’s personal. It’s always passing friends on campus. It’s professors who know you well enough to put real stories in their recommendation letters. It’s the support that gives you courage to go after everything you want in life. UMW feels more like a private school than a public school. Until you see the price tag, that is. The opposite of sticker shock is seeing your investment pay off, over and over again.
