Ammo Carrier Hoptic USA Longbow Quiver MSRP: $70 The Hoptic Longbow Quiver is a six-round spare ammo carrier that attaches to m-lok interfaces. It is seen here attached to the Chisel Machining stock, but it could easily live on MI’s m-lok handguard as well. It’s made to fit your choice of any of the common lever gun cartridges.
Buttstock Chisel Machining Marlin Aluminum Stock MSRP: $375 CNC-machined from solid 6061 billet aluminum, this stock features a fully ambidextrous and adjustable-height cheek piece, as well as an adjustableheight butt pad. It’s a great-looking and rigid stock with a decidedly modern look. What’s more, it allows you to convert your straight-grip rifle to a pistol-grip-style rifle with the right components.

MSRP: $400 Designed for Marlin 1895 rifles with a handguard cap, MI’s Extended Sight System includes a heavy duty ghost ring for fast target acquisition along with a steel rear aperture and front sight post. The sight features a wide windage and elevation adjustment range for use with different ammunition. An MI sight adjustment tool is conveniently included with the system. The m-lok equipped lightweight 6061 aluminum handguard is ultra-rigid and slim-feeling. The 13.625-inch-long handguard also includes a forward-mounted sling swivel for easy attachment of conventional hunting slings. Those who want to deck out their lever gun would be glad to know that this system features a fulllength top Picatinny rail for lights, lasers, or additional accessories.

umans as a species always seem to be fixated on finding the Next Big Thing. A pessimist might call it “Grass Is Greener”
syndrome. An optimist might point out that it’s just part of our desire to constantly improve and evolve. Both might argue it’s even coded into our DNA. In the firearms realm, at some point in the not-so-distant past, Glocks became the Next Big Thing. From the factory they weren’t much to look at, and certain people abhor them for this very reason. But they were and are tough, reliable, relatively lightweight, affordable, and come in a variety of different formats to suit different purposes. They became widely dispersed among both civilians and professionals, and it wasn’t long before the aftermarket noticed. So what might be the pistol camp’s Next Big Thing? Some think you’re looking at it—SIG Sauer’s P320 and its kin. The United States military thought so, and many in the firearms aftermarket who’ve thrown their chips into the SIG market believe this sector will only continue to grow. The P320 is referred to in SIG’s own literature as a “modular handgun series”—which, pardon us, we tend to read as “modify at will.” In fact, you can even commission SIG itself to build you your own custom version and have it shipped just the way you like it, direct from the factory. Of course if that were the case here, the story would be over. So that’s definitely not the case here. This P320 began life as a stripped XSeries Carry module—frame—that was built up for improved function, enhanced conceal- and carry-ability, and, of course, improved aesthetics. The owner/builder is Jay Canter, firearms enthusiast, photographer, manufacturer, consultant, and founder of Violent Art Firearms, where he builds guns of his own design for a growing customer base. This pistol is not a Violent Art Firearms branded build per se, but it is a good example of the cache a Canter/VAF brainstorm can bring to an otherwise “me too” kind of gun. “Everyone knows that when it comes to aftermarket parts and support for handguns, more companies make parts for Glockbased pistols over any other brand,” Canter says. “Slowly but surely, however, companies are seeing how great the P320 is for UN12mag.com

“It began life as a stripped P320 grip module—the frame—and was filled out with non-OEM aftermarket components.” GGP provided the slide, a GGP320 Compact Version 2. At first glance it may not seem a whole lot unlike a factory slide, but closer inspection reveals a cool knurled type of treatment on the raised sections of the front and rear serrations as well as along the flat surfaces of the slide’s length. It was originally supplied in a gray DLC finish, but we’ll get to that in a minute. The slide also comes with an RMR cut, which here hosts the progenitor of said cuts, a Trijicon RMR. This version is the HRS Type 2. The RMR is backed up with Trijicon HD night sight irons. These are not used as a cowitness mechanism and are employed only if Canter decides to remove the red dot. Finally, slung underneath the pistol’s business end and attached to the frame’s integrated rail sits a Streamlight TLR-7A, a compact 500-lumen weaponlight that fits nearly flush with the gun’s muzzle profile. The 7A also features two rear-switch configurations, offering a high or low set height to accommodate varying shooting styles. No truly custom build would be complete without some custom finishing, and this P320 has it in spades. The grip module was reworked by Walk the Plank Customs in a signature Delta style. Even though such work is typically filed under “stippling,” you might not really call it stippling in the traditional sense. It connects the textured areas on the factory SIG frame— side panels, backstrap, and the area under the second finger groove—and

ll the way back in UN12 issue 009 we featured a showcase of customized
Glock slides, wherein we contacted various slide customizers and asked them to provide us with a signature version of their work. In most cases all we were asked to do was provide the blank Glock slide and the customizer would graciously handle the rest. An old Marine we know volunteered one of those slides, and as luck would have it Zaffiri Precision out of West Florida, USA, got the tap to work on that particular unit. The old Devil Dog knew he’d be getting an RMR cut, but that’s all. Truth be told, we were loath to tell him that his slide would be receiving further work. It isn’t that we doubted ZP’s ability. We more doubted our Marine’s ability to embrace a customized Glock, a pistol he purchased strictly for it’s nononsense, no-frills utilitarianism. Our fears were unfounded. After asking about the slide for a solid four weeks (these things take time after all), he finally received it back. The pistol that wears that slide is now his favorite gun. We’ve caught him more than once handling it outside of the safe… not doing anything in particular, just admiring it. If that doesn’t speak to the inherent universal cool factor of Zaffiri Precision workmanship, it’s hard to know what does.

Beyond his knack for producing attractive custom designs, Zaffiri’s true genius has probably been taking that solid foundation and scaling it to industrial dimensions, which is more or less where Zaffiri Precision stands today. Company Profile
“It’s a steep learning curve, especially scaling to the volume we have now, but we have grown and adapted as necessary.” —Stephen Zaffiri
“We flourished during the pandemic,” Zaffiri says. “Because we make so much in-house we had very few supply-chain issues.” Left: In-house manufacturing of all salable components has enabled Zaffiri to scale his operation to industrial proportions.
Bottom: Zaffiri Precision’s manufacturing arm boasts more than 40 CNC machines, up from four just a few years ago.
He continues: “The increase in sales has definitely been a challenge. That’s a steep learning curve, especially scaling to the volume we have now, but we have grown and adapted as necessary.” As for the future, the company is again taking the next logical steps. Zaffiri Precision will soon produce its own branded firearms based on the Glock 17 and 19 platforms. At the time of this writing the company was producing a full pistol build using a Palmetto State Armory frame, but the forthcoming ZP17 and ZP19 will be built in a partnership with Nomad Defense and that company’s Nomad 9 enhanced frame. In fact, if you’re reading this with magazine (or tablet) in hand, the pistol should already be available for you to grab for yourself. At UN12 press time ZP was also in the final stages of developing its own suppressor, which again should be available by the time you read these words. Zaffiri Precision currently offers custom

barrels—threaded, fluted, crowned, whatever you like—for Glock 17, 17L, 19, 26, 34, 43, and 48 and slides for the same, as well as barrels and slides for SIG P365 and P320. Asked whether he plans on expanding into other markets or platforms, Zaffiri was more or less noncommittal but hasn’t completely ruled it out. For now the company is focused on maintaining volume—they currently move around 6,000 slides per month, the bulk of them individual orders—and creating a brick-andmortar dealer distribution network. “We would love to expand into other product lines but we just don’t have the capacity right now,” Zaffiri says. “We run 24 hours a day six days a week and are just barely keeping up.” Given what the company has accomplished so far, however, we wouldn’t put anything past them. Consider the fact that just two and a half years ago, at the end of 2019, the company was running just four CNCs. Today, they have more than 40. We’ll put nothing past them, and will be eagerly looking forward to what comes next. [ UN12 ]

AR500 steel targets are among the most popular attractions at the shooting ranges we frequent and it’s easy to understand why. Once set up, they do not require any taping up or replacement like paper and cardboard targets. They easily shrug off bullet strikes and are always ready for the next shot, right up until you call it a day.

He adds: “I’m glad I snapped one up then; they’re even harder to get now and the price went up by $600.” MAWL in hand, he thought he’d install it on a carbine he used for night vision shooting, then the thought crept
The carbine featured here happens to be one of his more recent accessory-inspired builds. It was only a few years ago that the night-vision bug bit Harbour hard. He was a regular at the local range and took carbine classes whenever the time and budget allowed it. It was one of these classes that opened his eyes to low-light and no-light shooting and training. “A carbine class I was at ran longer than expected, and on top of that it got darker a lot quicker than we thought it would,” Harbour explains. “Thinking that the class was going to end short, I started packing up my gear and calling it a day. It was then that the instructor brought out his NODs for a bit of show and tell.” He goes on: “I previously only saw night vision online, in the news, in documentaries on TV, so it was my first time to get a peek into an actual set of PVS-14s. Viewing the night through a green glow was life-changing. While our class was indeed curtailed, the chance to handle and get a look though an NVD sent me down the path that I’m still walking today. “So a hot new infrared laser unit came out a few years ago called the MAWL. modification. The setscrew can be added in said detent hole in order to help keep the detent in place when the end plate is removed. Without this modification, it’s common that both detent and spring go flying when the end plate is taken off. The lower also comes fitted with an MI heavy duty quickdetach end plate for sling attachment, as well as a Magpul CTR buttstock and Magpul MOE grip. Rounding out the factory version of this rifle are a Mil-Spec trigger group and Mil-Spec-diameter buffer tube. This MI-15F weighs just under 6 pounds, which Harbour thought was the perfect lightweight platform to start his build on. Harbour fills us in on the modifications he’s made. “Since I got the MAWL in OD green, I figured that I’d go ahead and get my rifle coated in shades of green as well. My initial thought was to get it Cerakoted in Woodland M81 camo, but of course one link leads to another and I was soon looking at tons of pics online of camo jobs. Every Multitasker tool displays a level of ingenuity and thoughtfulness often lacking in other tools. It should come as no surprise that the one-man operation is owned and operated by a student of the gun who has obviously witnessed the need for such tools. And while many other companies make tools that accomplish the same things, Multitasker sets itself apart with its innovative execution. The ability to easily carry these tools with no noticeable additional weight or footprint is the real magic. As I’ve always said: Everything you carry should be interrogated for purposefulness. olosun’s Advanced Enclosed Micro Sight, or AEMS for
short, has rapidly made a name for itself in the 1x optic market since its introduction less than a year ago. Once we got our hands on one, it was easy to see why. AEMS is a compact, non-magnified optic that offers a host of features not found on most other comparable red dot sights. The optic’s most notable
“Notable features include solar power and multiple reticle choices.”
Holosun extends the optic’s runtime by including two of the company’s signature features, Solar Failsafe and Shake Awake. The solar panel located on AEMS’s topside is there to allow it to remain powered even when the battery fails. Solar Failsafe features automatic brightness adjustments, so when you’re under the sun you’ll have a bright reticle, but when you move indoors the

through two rubberized buttons found on the left side of the optic’s body. Power on and off, as well as brightness and cycling through reticles, can all be achieved through quick taps or longer presses of these two buttons. It only took us a couple of minutes to familiarize ourselves with its operation. An adjustment knob for windage is found on the left side of the optic’s housing; elevation is on the right side. These knobs are flat and require a tool to adjust. AEMS comes with a handy tool for zeroing the optic, although it can also be done with a small flathead screwdriver. Adjustment per click is 0.5 MOA and the travel range for each knob is +/-50 MOA. AEMS also comes with a 1/3 co-witness mount and a low mount is available separately for those who need the optic to sit lower on the rail. We mounted the optic to an AR-15 and found that it was not only lightweight and didn’t take much top rail space, but looked good doing it, too. Looks may not matter to some, but we do appreciate a product’s aesthetic design. We took it out for some range time and found that the reticle was bright enough for us even in bright summertime sunlight. The reticle is sharp, easy to visually pick up, and the sight picture is unobstructed. The mount was able to keep perfect zero even after we inadvertently banged the rifle against a barrier a few times. Our time with it wasn’t by any means a torture test, but we came away confident that it’s built to last. For us, AEMS checks plenty of boxes including features, size, weight, even looks. With a price tag of $470 for the red reticle model including a mount, we deem it a great value. AEMS is also available with a green reticle for a premium charge. If you’re in the market for a full-featured, non-magnified, red-dot-style optic, do yourself a favor and consider Holosun’s AEMS.

Slings— The Essentials Text & Images by CHARLES “CHIP” LASKY
S
lings have been attached to firearms for as long as firearms have been employed by humans. Whether for fighting,
hunting, or sport shooting, they have been utilized as methods to store, carry, and steady long arms. Soldiers used leather slings with shiny brass buckles and grommets to carry their muskets and rifles over their shoulders as they marched into battle. Hunters and trappers would fashion slings out animal hide, sometimes with beautiful hand-crafted leatherwork burnished into the surface, for their hunting arms. Cowboys of the Wild West carried their repeaters and shotguns slung across their backs while blazing the frontier. Fast forward to the 20th century and soldiers of World War II could be seen using a mix of leather and canvas slings. Canvas was able to hold up better to the freezing elements of Bastogne and did not rot as quickly in the jungles of the Philippines. But it wasn’t until more recent times and conflicts that the sling was evaluated as a tool for weapons handling and operational use rather than a way to simply carry a gun on your back. War has always sped innovation in every industry. The old saying goes: Necessity is the mother of invention. Well, nothing creates more necessity than life-or-death struggle. As the nature of war changed, so too did the warfighter’s personal gear. Before the GWOT, the longest protracted struggle the Western World faced was Vietnam. Soldiers’ load-carriage equipment saw some slight advancements, but nothing compared to the more modern battlefield where a huge focus on lethality and survivability was placed across the service branches. Somewhere between hellish close combat in Iraq and the austere firefights of Afghanistan, we learned how to run a gun less like a classic soldier and more like a modern gunfighter. The manual of arms of modern assault rifles combined with the modern armor and gear lead to some interesting sling concepts. Single-point, two-point, and three-point slings were all put into the mix. I tried them all with many different weapon types. If you are familiar with my previous articles, you have probably drawn the conclusion that I am major gear nerd. And while there have been some great advancements in sling technology, I have found the enhanced two-point sling to be the most universally superior option. An enhanced two-point sling is one that allows quick and easy adjustment of sling length for use in various activities. It allows me to use the sling as a tool every bit as important as any other accessory I have attached to the weapon. Enhanced two-point

from the ’70s through the end of the ’90s. It’s still in use today, though in much smaller numbers. The “why” to that is a completely different story. But the popularity of the platform translated into a lot of weapons handling scars being transferred to the M4. But it did not take long for most to figure out that the three-point sling was a no-go for the AR-15 family. The webbing completely interfered with the ability to operate the bolt release. But early enhanced two-point slings had some issues too. The original two-point slings had free “tails” that were used for sling-length adjustment. While the design was revolutionary, the tails often snagged on gear, wrapped around other sling webbing, and even got caught in the magwell during a reload, causing the magazine to stick halfway inserted and rendering the weapon inoperable until the magazine was pried out. As the enhanced two-point sling evolved, the tails were captured and this became a non-issue. But using older slings out of nostalgia may be problematic.

3. ALLOW ME TO EASILY ASSUME VARIOUS FIGHTING POSITIONS. While we often practice shooting standing, kneeling, and prone, I have often found myself in all sorts of hasty ad hoc positions while fighting. I need to be able to get into all these stances and postures without my sling limiting my mobility or choking me. Essentially, this means I need to ensure my sling is properly set up to begin with. I need enough slack to move the weapon around me when the sling is adjusted out. But I need it to get small enough for me to create tension for support when the sling is shored up. As mentioned above, keeping the sling around my neck during a fight rather than being fully “in” the sling will allow me to get into a firing position I choose. 4. ALLOW THE WEAPON TO BE SECURELY STOWED WHEN NOT IMMEDIATELY NEEDED. The battlefield may require me to secure my primary weapon while performing other tasks. I need to safely stow it where it will not hinder my movement while climbing ladders. It needs to be stowed out of reach of others if I need to go hands-on with a bad guy. Administrative carry would be a rear sling or front sling position. Rear sling allows me to leave the front of my person relatively unencumbered by the rifle. It provides me the opportunity to use my arms and hands for any number of tasks. I prefer to sling my weapon in a muzzle-down position. I can easily get into the rear sling position without ever covering anyone with my muzzle—a major benefit when working with a team or around non-combatants. Optics of muzzlesweeping aside, it’s also a safer position to stow the weapon when I do not have

Another option for administrative carry is a front sling position. I always prefer to keep my firing hand positively on fire control whenever I have a long gun. Not only does it exude more confidence to those who may seek to start trouble, it allows me to 100% exert control over the safety selector. However, If I need to quickly use my hands and don’t want to put the gun on my back, I can turn my rifle inboard so it is “upside down” against my torso. The benefit of this maneuver is that my sling will run outboard of the weapon, effectively UN12 / Issue 017

I also like to attach my sling on opposite sides of the rifle. As a right-handed shooter, I will fix my rear sling stud to the right side (outside) of my stock and the front sling my handguard. This is a small detail, but an important one. First, the outside rear attachment helps “lock” the stock into my shoulder pocket or plate carrier when tension is applied to the sling. The tension is literally pulling the stock toward my body. Second, it allows me to switch hands and shoot lefty without getting choked out. It’s important to practice moving the weapon around your body (while wearing whatever kit you would normally find yourself wearing) after you initially set up and adjust your sling. You should be getting in and out of the sling in all the different positions so you can make sure it works for you. Sometimes letting an inch of webbing out or shoring it up can make all the difference. After setting it up to the proper length, secure any extra webbing with 100 mph tape. This article is about the benefits of enhanced two-point slings over other

designs. It’s not a buyer’s guide. I use a lot of different brands because there are a lot of great slings on the market. If the sling meets my checklist of requirements detailed above, it is probably good to go. The only thing I have not really touched on is pad versus nopad. Personally, I prefer a padded sling with soft material. But the reasons may not be what you think. 1. Padded slings can make all the difference when interacting with other mission critical gear such as balaclavas, collars, or other material that has a center seam running down the middle. During a long mobility exercise, a sling can really grind a seam into the neck if it’s not padded well. 2. Unless you have undergone laser hair rail removal or wax your neck on the daily—not judging—you will probably have some hair growing back on your neck after your last trip to the barber. These hairs act like Velcro and become extremely irritated from constant rubbing from webbing. A good, functional sling should be the first accessory on a rifle. From a functional perspective, an enhanced two-point sling is as much a tool for running the gun as it is a way to carry it. They have been the standard across military SOF units for many years. A well-built and properly set up enhanced two-point sling will increase the operational effectiveness of your weapon system. [ UN12 ]

he started seeing our Clone Life series of articles, and we’re glad he did. Dr. Jon, or just plain Jon as he likes to be called, is a surgeon in the Phoenix area who has a particular affinity for the M14 platform. His truly impressive collection of M14 rifles includes everything from an early type that was made in Devine, Texas, all the way to the elusive Troy Rock sopmod variant. It seems as if he currently has, or at least
has had, all of the specs in his collection at one time or another. When I asked Jon to pick just one for us to feature for this edition of Clone Life, he was quick to insist it be one of his M14 EBR builds. In the early 2000s, the United States government set out to build a medium-weight battle rifle to aid in more of a DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) role. After a couple years of development, the M14 EBR (Enhanced Battle Rifle) was designed. Without going into a “Forgotten Weapons” length history on the platform, the short form of this rifle’s history was that the then-current stock of surplus M14s would be upgraded to make them more accurate and user-friendly. Jon has a few M14 EBRs in inventory, but he selected his

to acquire the correct Nightforce 2.5-10x24mm scope that would make it an even more accurate clone. “I have been looking for this scope forever,” he told us. “Nightforce did a limited run of scopes in 2015, but unfortunately I missed out. commercial semi-automatic M14 style receivers and grafted an original USGI M14 heel onto the firearm. This allowed the receiver to have a correct roll mark and look almost identical to the real thing. He sent it out to LRB Arms to have an 18-inch Criterion barrel installed and headspaced to a USGI bolt. “Most of this project I could do,” he says. “But torquing a barrel down and lapping a bolt was outside of my comfort zone.” From there, it was just a matter of collecting the parts. The Sage EBR chassis system for the M1A/ M14 has had many forms and colors over the years. Finding the exact one that was used to fulfill this niche contract was not easy. Some had the right color but wrong top cover. Others had the wrong stock assembly. After about a year of hunting he finally found the right one for this build. I asked about the SureFire suppressor mounted on it. His reply: “That’s my multi-tasker. I only have one can so it bounces between this rifle, my .308 bolt gun, and my LMT .308. It’s not the correct color for the build, but I might have it Cerakoted later.” Jon is fortunate enough to have been collecting M14s and parts well before prices got truly crazy. His stockpile of spare parts ensures he will have many more builds to come. When asked about the next M14 project he has in the works, he said he has been searching for his Holy Grail gun—a LaFrance M14K. We wish him the best of luck in that search, and hopefully we might see another firearm out of his collection in a future edition of UN12’s Clone Life.

most of my professional career I’ve worked in
the shooting sports industry. For years I’ve been loading my guns, gear, ammo, and targets into every nook and cranny of small cars to varying degrees of success. In 2020 I finally decided it
was time to move into a more off-road-capable vehicle with improved storage solutions for my firearms.
The story of this FJ build starts with the 1992
4Runner 4x4 V6 that I purchased from a friend
of mine in December 2020. It sat on his driveway for years, decaying, ever since he abandoned
the project. The thing that drew me to this vehicle
was its five-speed manual transmission. I bought it for $2,000, changed the tires and fluids, and set off to visit my dad in Idaho for Christmas.
The 4Runner did great—but it was extremely
underpowered and slow. Maintaining 70 mph
uphill with a headwind was virtually impossible.
I knew this vehicle would be doing 80% of its job on the highway and only 20% off-road, so within the first month of owning it I had already started looking at alternatives.
This put me in an interesting position because
I am a manual elitist. In fact, I have only ever

that the FJ was offered with a six-speed manual. I checked Autotrader every day and read up

information, and learned that since I had the budget I should only be looking at the 2010
and later model years in order to avoid some
issues with the early-model cars. After weeks
of shopping online I found a few candidates that would fit the bill, but none of them really “spoke” to me.

One day I opened up Craigslist
and, lo and behold, there it was,
about 50 miles from my house: a
super-clean 2012 FJ Cruiser with
117,000 miles, manual transmission, off-road package with OEM Bilstein shocks and rear locker, listed for
$28,500. It had been listed for 23
days and I thought for sure it was sold already. As it turned out, the
owner texted me back confirming it was still available.
The ad was very descriptive, with
a lot of photos, and I was getting a
positive vibe from the owner, which is what prompted me to make him
an offer sight unseen. I offered him
$23,000. He countered at $24,000, to which I agreed. Later that day I went
to close the deal. The FJ was exactly

friends when I have the opportunity, so I already knew I was getting the
brand’s AK-1 wheels before I even
bought the FJ. Tire-wise, I decided to go with Nitto Terra Grappler G2 305/70/17s. I considered going
full-send into 35-inch tires, but I
tried to strike a balance between
capability and weight. I saved about
9 pounds per wheel with the Titan7s
compared to stock alloy wheels, and even though the tires are heavier,
my net weight increase per corner
was about 11 pounds. The change
in driving dynamics with this setup is barely noticeable.

hen talk turns to AR-15 ammunition, a debate inevitably arises as to the adequacy (or lack thereof)
of the standard 5.56x45 NATO cartridge. While great for plinking or turning out a large volume of output, some (or many, depending on who you ask) feel that it isn’t ideal when it comes to overall stopping power, e.g., in a home defense situation, or even when hunting large game. When talking about the perceived inadequacy of 5.56, conversation seems to inevitably turn to the so-called “Big Boy” rounds. Setting aside .308, which is a different platform altogether, these include the Big Three—.450 Bushmaster, .458 socom, .50 Beowulf. The barrel used here is one such cut, 8.25 inches with a 1:6 twist. “I chose it to go with the Battle Arms Development 6.7-inch Rigidrail,” Canter says. “It being a shorter setup, I simply wanted an extra inch on the barrel for that extra powder burn.” The aforementioned rail is sheathed in a piece of genuine French walnut. This is part of Battle Arms’ two-piece wood furniture kit. Essentially an ergonomically carved rail cover, it is designed specifically for BAD Rigidrail and Workhorse rail systems. The front end cut on the slide, which teases the gold barrel with its functional yet aesthetically pleasing top ports, makes the pistol almost too pretty to shoot, but I promise this thing sees lots of range time. I paired the ZPS.4 slide with a ZP upper parts kit (UPK). The ZP UPK is manufactured in the USA so I was not worried about its quality and

reliability. I also added a Rook Tactical Smooth Operator guide rod for its improved mechanics over stock rods. Rook’s guide rod is machined from 17-4 stainless steel and has a radius at the tip where it interacts with the slide to prevent snagging and provide a “smoother” overall operation. It is an uncaptured spring system, so if Future Me ever wanted to tune the pistol, I have that option. The guide rod comes with one of the best recoil springs on the market, a Wolff spring in 18 pounds, enough said.

rounds and gives me a good place to grip if I ever needed to rip the mag out during a reload. I looked to add even more capacity with Strike Industries’ recently released aluminum Extended Magazine Plates (EMP) for G17. The extensions take the standard 17 round mag count up to 22 rounds. I also have 15-round G19 mags, but of course I paired them up with Strike’s polymer version of the EMP extensions for a total round count of 20. For the price, quality and durability, I cannot say anything else but that these mag extensions are good to go. I’ve used them for years on many different pistols and they’re simply the best bang for your buck. What began as an Internet search for a top end to mate with a nonfactory Glock frame quickly became a self-appointed challenge to find quality non-Glock factory components to assemble a Glock clone pistol. I quickly found out that the aftermarket was ready and made the task rather easy. Armed with enough style and performance for a good time at the range and for some sick Instagram pictures, this non-Glock pistol has earned a place in my range bag and pistol rotation at my local fun weeknight matches. more coils in the spring) and thereby smoothing out the inherent violence of the gas system. What is the secret sauce? The inside of the buffer contains a wide spring to aid in consistent placement of the weights. We liken it to using weights to balance a vehicle’s tire. This internal spring also aids in mitigating bolt bounce. Add it all together and it makes us wonder if those crazy BCM kids were thinking about future military upgrades, or if they just love those of us who live in the commercial market. Interestingly, BCM is producing more than one or two options for buffer weights. They start with the MOD1-T0, which weighs 3.8 ounces, and offer five total options ending with the MOD1-T4, which hits the fat boys’ scales at 7.4 ounces. For quick reference, the standard AR-15 H buffer is 3.8 ounces, and the H3 is around 5.2 ounces. The complete BCM MK2 kit contains all the necessary parts to mount to your Mil-Spec dimension stock assembly to your Mil-Spec lower receiver.

The problem with this thinking is that for those who have ever been overseas, or in any type of fight for that matter, you can often find yourself in situations outside of what many would call ideal.

COURSE OF FIRE Begin each course of fire with 2 rounds in your rifle (one in chamber, one in the magazine) and a second magazine of at least 2 rounds. This exercise will require 20 rounds—4 rounds per string. The target will be an IPSC target with a 3x5-inch index card as an enlarged head “A-Zone” and a half sheet of printer paper as a reduced “A-Zone” (8.5” x 5.5”). Shots taken from the close shooting positions (P1, P2, P3) will be to the head “A-Zone.” Shots taken from the far shooting positions (P4, P5, P6) will be to the reduced center mass “A-Zone.” After each string, record your time and reset for the next.
