TAILBONE
OIL FINISH SHOT SHELL BAG
It might look like a fixed blade, but there’s more at play here. At first glance the Tailbone fixed-blade outdoor knife passes as an ordinary neck-knife with a paracord-wrapped handle. In hand is where it really comes to life. The machine-chain handle moves for superb ergonomics but remains perfectly rigid when cutting or slicing, making the blade highly usable and perfectly unexpected.
Filson’s tough Tin Cloth bag features a water-resistant oiled finish and accommodates up to four boxes of 12-gauge shells. It also has sturdy, lightweight, quick-drying nylon-webbing carry straps and webbing reinforcement. Two exterior stow pockets provide organization for small items and double-needle construction adds to the lifetime serviceability of this reliably rugged field bag.

Premium EDC Items UAG Monarch iPhone 12 Wandrd Camera Sling Pro Max Case Strap
22
NYA-EVO Fjord 26 Adventure Camera Backpack
MSRP: $60 URL: urbanarmorgear.com Our 2¢: After purchasing an ultra-expensive smartphone such as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the first thing would be to ensure its protection with a quality case. The UAG Monarch ticks all the boxes in this respect with its 2X MIL-STD drop test rating, five layers of protection, and traction grip. The case is lightweight and easy to install. It features a soft core and protective edges for the screen. The carbon fiber appearance is also a nice touch.
MSRP: $54 URL: wandrd.com Our 2¢: To help keep your camera safe, a quality strap will provide you with confidence and additional insurance from slippery hands. This durable strap can hold up to 100 pounds and its universal attachment system will work with just about any camera or mount. The strap’s length is highly adjustable and can be worn over your shoulder, neck, or across the body. We found the strap easy to use and comfortable, while its minimalist style keeps it discrete.
MSRP: $199 URL: nya-evo.com Our 2¢: The Fjord 26 is a compact, lightweight, and very user-friendly camera backpack loaded with features. It has a weather-resistant exterior and a clever customizable interior that keeps things organized and protected. The clean, modern styling doesn’t scream that it’s a camera bag, which helps deter would-be thieves. We found this pack to be extremely comfortable even when loaded thanks to its padded shoulder straps, sternum strap, and removable waist belt.
Pelican 2310 Flashlight
Peak Design Tripod
SOG Ultra XR
MSRP: $29 URL: pelican.com Our 2¢: This budget-friendly LED flashlight is just the right size for a glovebox, toolbox, backpack, or for clipping to a pocket. With an output of up to 350 lumens, 134 meters of max beam distance, and run time of up to 27 hours with two AA batteries, it provides ample illumination for most instances. It’s easy to use with work gloves and built tough to withstand the occasional drop.
MSRP: $600 URL: peakdesign.com Our 2¢: Weight and size can pose problems with typical tripods, becoming a hindrance while traveling. Peak Design addressed these two issues and created our all-time favorite tripod. From the adjustable legs to the ballhead, each part is thoughtfully considered and easy to use. It’s extremely portable and packs down to the size of a water bottle, yet retains the stability needed for most outdoor shoots.
MSRP: $125 URL: sogknives.com Our 2¢: Who says your EDC can’t function well and look good at the same time? One look at this carbon-and-gold blade and we were sold. At 6.5mm thick and weighing only 34 grams, the Ultra XR features slimline design with lightweight materials, including a CRYO CPM S35VN stainless steel blade and carbon fiber handle. The XR Lock enables smooth, ambidextrous single-handed opening and securely locks the blade open.

Pelican 14QT Personal Cooler
Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Mid
MSRP: $100 URL: pelican.com Our 2¢: This new personal-sized cooler does more than just keep things cold. It doubles as a dry box to safeguard items like wallets, keys, and smartphones. The cooler retains ice for up to 36 hours and integrates three zones for dry, cool/dry, and cold items. A removable inner tray can keep food cold, two cupholders are built into the lid, and the integrated bottle opener is magnetized to capture spent bottle caps. Perhaps most importantly, the storage space is ample enough to hold an entire six-pack.
MSRP: $170 URL: altrarunning.com Our 2¢: Known for incredible trail running shoes, Altra also produces boots that provide the same features with additional ankle support. These all-weather boots are the perfect outdoor companions to get you across varying terrain on the trail. Weighing a mere 15 ounces, they feature a soft and responsive midsole to provide all-day comfort. An ultra-grippy outsole provides traction on slick surfaces, and their waterresistant construction and materials ensure you arrive back at camp with dry feet.
VSSL JAVA
Hillsound BTR Stool
Wandrd Toiletry Bag
MSRP: $145 URL: vsslgear.com Our 2¢: For coffee aficionados who want versatility and portability, the JAVA is a premium, ultra-durable, portable hand coffee grinder with high-end construction. No detail was overlooked in its design, from the stainless steel burr to the carabiner-style handle that doubles as the grinder’s handle, which can connect to a pack to ensure the unit doesn’t get lost.
MSRP: $55 URL: hillsound.com Our 2¢: This is the lightest and most packable stool we’ve used. At about the size of a water bottle when stowed, it’s small enough to keep in a backpack or in a vehicle glovebox. Made from aluminum and a breathable nylon mesh, it’s lightweight and very comfortable. If you’re wondering what “BTR” stands for, it’s “Better Than a Rock”—which this stool definitely is.
MSRP: From $39 URL: wandrd.com Our 2¢: A good toiletry bag is often overlooked, but for those who’ve experienced one there’s no turning back. The Wandrd bag has a padded bottom to help it stand upright, and the spacious main compartment is accessed via a waterproof zipper. Inside, an elastic strap holds a toothbrush or razor in place, while two mesh pockets help organize additional toiletries. Two sizes are available along with an optional carry strap.
UN12 / Issue 012
AeroPress Go
MSRP: $32 URL: aeropress.com Our 2¢: Simple, easy, and effective were our thoughts after using the AeroPress Go for the first time. This extremely portable and lightweight coffee press can make espresso, American, and even cold-brew-style coffee drinks wherever you find yourself. Quick and easy cleaning and reassembly processes ensure no-fuss maintenance while traveling. The design incorporates all the tools needed to brew a cup, including a mug with lid, filters, chamber, plunger, filter cap and holder, stirrer, and scoop. The components pack compactly together when it’s time to move.

he second that Mossberg’s 590 Shockwave hit the market, we knew the company had a hit on its hands. The diminutive 14-inch-
barreled 12-gauge shotgun has a capacity of 5 plus 1 and measures just a hair over 26 inches long overall. It’s about as compact as you can get and still dishes out quite a wallop. The Shockwave’s “bird’s head” pistol grip is shaped to minimize felt recoil. Like other 590s, it features an ambidextrous safety, dual extractors, positive steel-to-steel lockup, twin action bars, and a smooth-operating, anti-jam elevator. What else would you need in a 12-gauge? It didn’t take long for the shotgun specialists at Mesa Tactical to heed the call and zero in on just what they thought could improve on the already-impressive

Accessory Rail The 18-inch-long, fulllength Picatinny rail can readily accept red dot sights, lights, or lasers. The aluminum top rail is a solid base on which to mount any manner of accessories.
AD: ATIBAL Precision Fit Like other Mesa Tactical rails, the Fallon Rail System is engineered for a precision fit and ease of installation, and it’s designed so it does not interfere with any of the shotgun’s controls.
The company’s latest creation is made specifically for shortlength shotguns like the 590 Shockwave, as well as Remington’s TAC-13 and TAC-14. Called the Fallon Rail System, the 6061T6 aluminum rail is designed to lend additional function to an already-solid foundation. The Fallon injects a whole lotta Mesa Tactical flavor by way of adding a full-length Picatinny rail along the shotgun’s spine, as well as a built-in shell carrier and m-lok accessory mounting points on either side of the muzzle end. Here we take a closer look at some of the specific details that make Mesa Tactical’s Fallon Rail System the default upgrade for compact scatterguns. [ UN12 ]

B&T’s APC line of firearms comes in a variety of calibers and sizes, but no matter which one you choose, all known for their soft-shooting characteristics. This is in part due to their use of B&T’s hydraulic buffer. B&T explains that just as shock absorbers dampen the felt vibration from rough roads inside a car, the force of recoil does not slam on any part of the gun but is instead sharply reduced by the hydraulic buffer. This reduction of recoil helps the user maintain tight shot groups and quick follow-up shots. The buffer also helps increase the service life of the weapon.

or many, the Pelican brand has become synonymous with peace-of-
mind protection. The company’s collection of protective cases can be found just about anywhere, from the firing range to the insides of first-responder vehicles and on professional photo and video shoots protecting valuable equipment and gear. With many Pelican customers using these cases for vehicle storage and travel, it was a natural transition for the brand to create a dedicated assortment of cases designed to mount in the beds of trucks, on roof racks, and inside the cargo areas of cars and SUVs. Pelican Cargo products were built with adventure in mind. With more people looking to travel and hit the open road in their personal vehicles and with the rising popularity of overlanding, the timing for the product could not have been better. Overlanding’s roots lie deep in travel over extended periods of time, often spanning months or years and across international boundaries. This type of travel relies heavily on the durability and dependability of products to ensure a successful journey, and with this in mind Pelican sought to create a line of cases that would satisfy the most demanding road warriors. Both long-term and short-term travel requires plenty of planning and preparedness. Storage is one of the most important factors when planning a trip. Regardless of the length of time of the escape, whether it’s for months at a time or even over the course of a weekend, Pelican Cargo provides options to help organize and store your gear, dry food, and

Length Matters Magazine length is strictly regulated by many shooting competition organizations. Both IPSC and USPSA require you to measure the length of long magazines in their Open divisions. The cartridge on the right is a standard 9mm round; the longer one on the left is a 9 Major. What’s the difference? If you’re looking to get into competitive shooting, you will undoubtedly run into something called Power Factor (PF). Those who understand how to use PF to their advantage can use it to find an ammo load that will allow their pistol to run in a manner that is most advantageous to their shooting preference. Some like softer-shooting loads for reduced recoil while others like a quicker, snappier recoil so they can get back on target faster.
PF is a calculation that covers ammunition power levels and is commonly used by many shooting organizations to determine which gun division or classification a shooter can compete in. PF can affect match scoring, too. Calculating the PF for an ammo load is done by multiplying the bullet’s weight by its velocity, divided by 1,000. If the result meets or surpasses the required minimum PF for the division, then it’s good to go. Competition-orientated pistols like the Titan Imperium are made to accept elongated 9 Major rounds that are
loaded longer than the 9mm’s normal maximum overall length of 1.169 inches. A cartridge with a longer overall length reduces chamber pressure while still meeting the minimum PF. This can result in a softer-shooting round, which can lend a competitive advantage. If you’re going to get serious in competition shooting, prepare to do your math and start customizing your loads. If that’s not your thing, give the team at Titan Ballistics a call.

A Brief History of the Shark The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was probably the airplane that made the “shark’s mouth” or “shark’s face” combat marking famous, but it wasn’t the only airplane to use the motif. Or even the first. The earliest known example of the stylized maw applied to the nose of an airplane, another combat aircraft no less, is a WWI-era German Roland C.II. The Luftwaffe brought the shark’s mouth into WWII, where it
reappeared on ZG 76 ME 110s flying out of Norway during the Battle of Britain. After encountering these airplanes, the Royal Air Force copied the motif and applied it to the Curtiss P-40, whose pronounced, open-airintake nose design was particularly suited to it. Shark-faced P-40s first saw action over North Africa in the war’s Western Theater as part of the RAF’s No. 112 Squadron. The shark face became an icon when it was adopted by the American Volunteer Group, a unit of the Chinese Air Force comprised of pilots from the U.S. Army Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps. Also known as the Flying Tigers, the AVG was instrumental in
wresting air superiority from the Japanese in the war’s Eastern Theater. Outnumbered by ratios sometimes as high as 10 to 1, their exploits became the stuff of legend and the shark face became ingrained in our post-war collective consciousness While it never really left that consciousness, the Flying Tigers shark face got a pop-culture boost when Japanese clothing company BAPE (shorthand for A Bathing Ape) applied the motif to a hooded sweatshirt in the early 1990s—essentially reestablishing it as an icon of graphic design. As luck would have it, just as Jay Canter was conceiving this AR pistol build, SD Tactical Arms introduced its own riff on the shark’s mouth in the form of a new custom handguard—fittingly nicknamed “WWII.”

yet inextricably linked, color schemes. The patterns were applied in tandem by Koted Arms in Mesa, Arizona (Gibbz Arms’ partnered Cerakote applier, incidentally). One of them represents the standard BAPE shark hoodie color scheme—red mouth, white eyes and teeth on a black background—while the other incorporates a “frog skin” camo overlay that adds yet another dimension to this multilayered build. The attention to detail is impeccable.
“The Cerakote patterns were applied together in a deliberate, highly detailed way—separate, yet inextricably linked.”
BAPE today does similar animal print designs on contemporary versions of the shark hoodie. Canter briefly explains the creative spark for this project. “I pull inspiration from many sources,” he says. “Fashion, shoes, watches, the auto industry or motorsports, food, you name it. I’ve followed BAPE for years. Before they became popular they would create ultra-limited clothing items—typically only a few hundred shirts for worldwide distribution. That made the products highly sought-after, and that’s one reason I wanted to pay homage to their creativity. No matter what you’re into collecting, everyone wants those pieces that make the statement, ‘Nobody else on Earth has this.’” [ UN12 ]

companies in the modern suppressor market, Wanorek has a lifelong association with and love for firearms— which makes all the more sense given where he hangs his hat. He has spent much of his adult life working in the oil and gas industry in Texas to help pay the bills, but he also owned his own custom gun shop for years before helping get Torrent Suppressors off the ground circa 2015. This particular gun is actually part of what he calls a “twins” project, which was in fact conceived—without his own prior knowledge, as it turns out—by Wanorek’s business partner and the other Torrent Suppressors principal—co-founder and co-owner, as well as company CEO, Trey Trosclair. Wanorek and Trosclair, who grew up in the area where Wanorek currently calls home, were introduced by a mutual friend in the industry. Trosclair was also running a gun-building enterprise and the two merged operations—mainly putting together black rifles with the occasional custom job thrown in the mix. “This specific gun was purchased by Trey,” Wanorek tells us. “When it came in, I was oohing and aahing over it.” Little did he know that there were in fact two of them, one of them purchased for him and trailing the same raft of custom modifications as documented here. All that was really left for him to decide was settling on a custom Cerakote scheme to finish it off.

Torrent in 2021 In preparing this story, we got a little bit of insight into the company and its plans for the upcoming year. Torrent recently teamed up with Joe Gaddini of SWR, patent holder for one of the most effective suppressor designs in U.S. history. Through this alliance Torrent hopes to shake up the status quo and re-inject world-class performance into the suppressor market. The first offering from the collaboration is the Torrent SWR 30 Series, a full Grade 5 titanium-housed suppressor. It uses an endcap insert that may be swapped in and out to allow the user to shoot multiple calibers; one for 5.56, one for 6.5 Creedmoor, and so on. On the rear there’s a multi-mount adapter that allows the user to adapt to varying thread pitch. As Don Wanorek says, “Buy one and you’re done.” Also in the offing is a new Orthrus suppressor for .22, allowing
users to switch between .22 LR, .22 Magnum, .22 HMR and back again. A new serviceable 9mm pistol can is also in the works, which will release under the working name Trident 9. The subject of the accompanying story, Torrent’s Orthrus for .45, is available through an exclusive partnership with Rainier Arms. As with much of the industry, the future is looking bright in spite of a hard year for many in 2020. “Business was slow through the whole Covid scenario, but now it’s really picking up,” Wanorek says. “We’ve got all our sales guys out in the field and they’re currently placing some really big orders.” For more information, visit torrentsuppressors.com.

is especially true with many aspects of the gun world, where it’s not uncommon to see a strange mix of old and new technologies coexisting. Some things stay the same for over a hundred years while others feel like they change every few months. Take a pistol like the 1911 or any number of ammunition cartridges. The origins of the 1911 can be traced back more than a century, and some ammo even longer, yet they are still used today seemingly little changed from when they were first conceived. At the same time, there have been many improvements that have propelled these same
