“Alpha Chi’s been the group of girls I never had. All of my life, and my first year of college, I always hung out with the guys—I really only had a couple close girl friends. These sisters have shown me more love and acceptance than I’ve ever experienced and could have ever asked for, and for that I will be forever thankful!” —Sarah Wotus
“In a world where it is very easy to be lost, ADPi is my home away from home. Since joining ADPi, I have never felt alone because through every bad test, personal problem, or other typical college hiccups, My sisters support me, dance with me, and laugh with me, and that’s something that you will rarely find anywhere else.” —Maggie Clemens
“Alpha Phi means finding friends I’ll have for a lifetime! It’s where I found my family away from home and where I fit in. I also truly enjoy being in a chapter where we are able to establish our own traditions. No matter what is going on in my day, in my week, in my year, the moment I walk into that house and surround myself with the people that love this chapter, I’m able to confidently express myself.” —Alex Pare

Frequently Asked
Questions
1. What sororities are at UNC? There are 12 Panhellenic sororities here at UNC. 2. How and when do I join a sorority? Panhellenic sororities have two forms of Recruitment. Formal Recruitment takes place at the beginning of the fall semester. Registration is online. Panhellenic sororities also have informal recruitment in January, however, not all organizations participate. Panhellenic does host an informal session regarding Spring recruitment. The vast majority of women who join Panhellenic groups join in the Fall. National Panhellenic Council (NPHC) groups have their own forms of recruitment, called intake, later in the school year. The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life recommends that you join a sorority when it is most comfortable for you. 70% of women who participate in formal Recruitment are first-year students and upper-class women are encouraged to consider joining a sorority. 3. When will I get more information about sororities? Panhellenic Council booklets are e-mailed during the summer. The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life will also present an information session at each orientation. Representatives of the Greek councils will be on hand during the sessions with information regarding membership. 4. What are recommendations for sororities and are they required to participate in recruitment? The recommendations are letters from alumnae of a particular sorority, not necessarily those who graduated from Carolina, in support of the woman participating in recruitment. UNC Chapel Hill Panhellenic Council does not require recommendation letters in order to participate in recruitment. However, if you still prefer to have relatives or other friends send letters on your behalf, they may be sent directly to the chapter house, attach it to your application, or send it electronically to each chapter. 5. How much does it cost to join a sorority? The average cost for a new member living in a dorm ranges from $1,800-$3,000 per semester. This price includes local and national dues, building fund, liability insurance, one-time initiation fees, social dues, and a meal plan. Meal plans for sorority houses are required, but are based on and adjusted according to your current meal plan. Compared to living in a residence hall, Granville towers, or an apartment, living in a sorority house is the most economical option. 6. Do I have to live in a sorority house if I join? Sorority houses do not always require you to live in the house, but some do. Many women decide to move into their sorority house during their 2nd or 3rd year, although it is not required. This is a great question to ask the chapters during recruitment. 7. If I have a meal plan already, can I still eat meals at the sorority house? New members joining chapters that offer meal plans can take their bid card to the One Card office within the 1st week of receiving their bid to adjust their on-campus meal plan. There is a $50 processing fee at the time of cancellation. Note that Granville Towers meal plans cannot be canceled, but they can be reduced (or increased) at the start of the spring semester.

Questions

8. Will joining a sorority affect my grades? The GPA of fraternity and sorority members has been consistently higher than the non-Greek GPA, including for students who join in their first year at UNC. Roughly 33% of the Greek population achieves Dean’s List. 9. How can I learn more about individual sororities, in order to narrow down my selection? We suggest you register Panhellenic Recruitment online. The Fraternity and Sorority Semester Report ranks chapters by GPA and whether the group has had any violations of policies. We also suggest you look over the academic incentives groups offer their members. Most of the sororities on campus have websites that can be accessed from the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life website. The Fraternity and Sorority Semester Report ranks chapters by GPA and includes service level, the percentage of members involved at UNC, and whether the group has had any violations of policies. Most of the sororities on campus have websites that can be accessed from the Fraternity and Sorority Life website. 10. How long will I be a new member? All new members must be initiated within eight weeks of joining. Some groups have shorter new member periods. As a new member, you will attend an educational speaker sponsored by Fraternity and Sorority Life what it means to be a part of a sorority or a fraternity. 11. What about hazing? Hazing–defined as causing or permitting a person, incident to initiation into or membership into a society, club, or similar organized group, to participate in any activity that subjects that person or others to risks of physical injury, or mental distress or personal indignities of a highly offensive nature, whether or not such person has consented to participate in this activity–is a violation of Panhellenic rules, the campus code, and state law. Both individuals and organizations can be charged with hazing violations. The hazing policy specifically prohibits forced consumption of alcohol, calisthenics, paddling, road trips, line-ups, and running personal errands of members. The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life takes calls 24 hours a day at (919) 962-8298 to report any problems associated with being a new member – including allegations of hazing. The caller may be anonymous, but the group alleged to be hazing must be identified to initiate an investigation. 12. How safe are the houses? All Greek houses must have a working fire alarm and sprinkler system in order to be occupied. The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life provides an extensive fire safety program, in conjunction with the Chapel Hill Fire Department. The Office also has close partnerships with the Chapel Hill and UNC police departments. 13. Is there a dress code for formal recruitment? You will receive a white t-shirt with the Panhellenic Recruitment logo on it and will be required to wear it for Round 1.1 and Round 1.2. Outside of that, there is no specific dress code, as we want you to wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable. You should aim to show off your personal style (within reason). Chapter members will wear increasingly dressy clothes with each round. There will be a lot of walking, so make sure to wear (or bring) comofrtable shoes!

Frequently Asked
Questions
14. What do I need to know before recruitment? If you know a woman in a sorority, great! Please stick to general questions about the Panhellenic system - do not ask her specific questions about her chapter. To keep the recruitment process fair for everyone, sorority women will not be allowed to be in contact with you during recruitment. Panhellenic recruitment takes place during IFC (fraternity) recruitment. Do not attend any IFC recruitment events - women are not allowed. Remember that recruitment is an alcohol-free period for all chapter members and potential new members so we are able to focus on recruitment. 15. How does recruitment work? Recruitment is based on a mutual selection process based on preferences of the houses and the potential new member (PNM). After each round, you will preference the houses you have visited that day. You will find out the houses you will visit the next day at the start of that next round.
16. What happens during a round? UNC Panhellenic is excited to participate in values-based recruitment. Therefore, you should focus on finding the best match between your values and chapter values. Additionally, each round has a theme, so chapter members will tell you what their chapter does for sisterhood events or for philanthropy. Round 1 is a short open house round that focuses on introductions. Round 2 is a philanthropy-focused round; each chapter has a unique national charity and annual events to tell you about. Round 3 focuses on house tours and sisterhood. And finally, round 4 (“preference round) gives you a taste of chapter ritual. This round should have the longest and deepest conversations as you decide where you would like to join. The main thing to remember is to be yourself, show your values, and be polite to chapter members. Remember that chapter members have even longer days than you! Disrespect to any chapter or chapter members will not be tolerated and will be addressed directly by the Vice President of Standards. 17. Who will be helping me through this process? Your main point of contact will be your Gamma Chi recruitment counselors. You will be placed into a group with about twenty other potential new members and two Gamma Chis. These counselors are sorority members who have disaffiliated to help you through the recruitment process. They are impartial leaders who will walk you to rounds, answer your questions, and help input your preferences after each round. You will also meet a member of the Panhellenic Judicial Board outside of each chapter house. She is also disaffiliated from her chapter and will help line you up and check you in before each round. It is incredibly important to listen to her instructions and make sure you are checked in on time. 18. What not to do during recruitment. DO NOT SKIP ROUNDS. You will not be able to continue with recruitment if you skip any round without an excuse approved by the Panhellenic council. Classes are excused so DO NOT SKIP CLASS. Do not be disrespectful to any chapter or chapter members under any circumstances. You may be dismissed from recruitment due to severe disrespect. Follow the instruction of Gamma Chi recruitment counselors and Panhellenic Judicial Board members. Do not be late to rounds. Please walk/run as quickly as you can between rounds. Tardiness will disrupt the round and does not create a good first impression.Do not ask other women what chapters they like or dislike. The recruitment process only works when each woman makes her own decision based on which houses she feels her values fit best with.

What is The Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement is the contract you sign the last day of recruitment to choose which sorority you want to join. We are going to break it down for MRABA? you to understand what you are signing!
You are willing to join any of the sororities you are listing on this agreement. If you place all of the chapters down on this agreement, you are able to get a bid. This bid may not be to your number 1 chapter. If you only place one sorority down, you are not guaranteed a bid. You can't change the chapter rankings once you complete this agreement. If you don't get a bid, you can join in spring recruitment or join a chapter still recruiting in the fall. If you don't fit into the chapters you visited, you don't need to complete this form.
If you get a bid from any of your preferences below and say no to it, you can't join any chapter till fall recruitment.
Make sure you rank the chapter in the order of preference. You can only list chapters you visited on preference round.
