PVA graduates fly to LA, show work to community, inspire youth RYAN LAMBERT Arts@uncmirror.com Students in the College of Performing and Visual Arts must leave UNC to make a name for themselves in professions that demand creative talent. For example, from May 34, a group of 18 graduating acting and musical theatre majors explored the ins and outs of careers in LA for the School of Theatre Arts and Dance’s fifth annual LA Showcase. During the event, the students performed short skits and songs at the Falcon Theatre. Two theatre arts professors, David Grapes and Ken Womble, directed the

Grapes oversaw the event and said he believes that it serves as a means by which his students can network with established professionals.
“The students use the showcase as a springboard to transition from college to a career,” Grapes said. “It gives them contacts for the future.” The showcase did not only consist of acting, however. The participating stu-
but the LA Showcase is designed for students who want to act in films and television shows. If potential actors want careers in the entertainment capital of the world, they need agents. Students met with agents who have ties to CBS, Nickelodeon and Warner Bros. In past years, 40 UNC students have been signed to agents at the showcase. Above all else, however, the showcase illustrated to participants what life in Los Angeles is really like. “Some of the students need to get a feel for LA to see if they can live there,” Grapes said. The following students took part in the showcase: Ben Burch, Trysten Cain, Devin Crane, Heidi Cheek, Jason Clark, Lindsay Cook, Eric Eidson, Mehry Eslaminia, Brandon Garegnani, Leslie Hoxworth, Megan Krusleski, Tyler Ledon, Jamie Mills, Lynnsey Ooten, Michelle Payler, Angela Pettigrew, Erin Watkins and Devin Crane.
dents were able to audition for film and television roles and meet established actors and writers. Scott Sedita, the author of “The Guide to Making it to Hollywood: Three Steps to Success, Three Steps to Failure,” lectured to the students on how to establish themselves in film and television. Sedita’s book concerns his 25 years as an acting coach and the three things needed to be a successful actor: talent, confidence and perseverance. Additionally, University of Northern Colorado alumnus Steve Eastin, who played Eddie Cicotte in the Kevin Costner film “Field of Dreams,” also presented to students. The LA Showcase is a relatively new service PVA provides to its students. For 15 years, PVA has been sending students to New York for showcases, and, indeed, they sent a group of students this year on March 15. The New York Showcase is geared toward students pursuing careers in theater,

The School of Art and Design also recognized its students Thursday evening with a portfolio reception at Doug’s Hang Up, a former art gallery located off of 10th Street. At this event, graduating arts and design students were able to share their work with their colleagues. The portfolio reception was coordinated by Mark Fetkewicz, a professor of arts and design. “This is a great town event,” Fetkewicz said. “And it is a way for our graduating seniors to get their work out to the public.” Not all of PVA’s students want time in the spotlight, though. Some of them just want to influence another person’s life. One such student is Justine Naibauer, a senior art education major. Originally, Naibauer wanted to become a surgeon; she said she found proficiency in math and science and in having access to absolute answers. However, in 2008, when Naibauer was 20, she went on a skiing trip that dramatically changed her perspective on her existence. She collided with a tree, and the impact was so powerful that part of her brain slammed against her skull. After this accident, Naibauer spent three days in a coma and 20 days with severe amnesia. “I had some traumatic events, and art was really my only outlet,” she said. “It taught me to think for myself.” See Art Student, Page 12

UNC experiences prepare graduates for life after college SARA VAN CLEVE news@uncmirror.com The countless hours spent both in and out of the classroom studying, learning and working on assignments are paying off for the more than 1,400 UNC students celebrating commencement Friday and Saturday. The University of Northern Colorado is hosting its 121st spring graduate and undergraduate commencement May 6 and 7, respectively. During the graduate ceremony Friday at ButlerHancock Hall, 291 spring graduates received master’s, specialist and doctoral degrees and 188 summer graduates were recognized. During the undergraduate ceremony today at Nottingham Field, 1,127 spring graduates will receive their diplomas and 350 summer graduates will be recognized. The five most-awarded degrees are interdisciplinary studies, business administration, psychology, dietetics, and English language. One graduating senior, Stephanie Adams, will be receiving her bachelor’s degree in child psychology. Adams started her college career at Fort Lewis College in Durango, but transferred to UNC the second semester of her sophomore year. “It was fun and it was great, but I didn’t think I was getting the college experience I wanted,” Adams said. This summer, Heatherly will be in Washington, D.C. for an internship with the educa-
flexible and would allow her to bring her children to class. She said her children, now 10 and 12, are excited about school and planning on going to college because they saw the experiences Oakley had. Oakley said she has known that she wanted to work with children with special needs since high school, but when she got married and had children, her plans changed. Before she went back to school, Oakley was working at an elementary school as a special education paraprofessional. Within the last five years, Colorado has changed the requirement for special education teachers from a master’s to a bachelor’s degree, so Oakley decided it was her time to go back to college. “I have a little sister with special needs,” Oakley said. “I started at a young age. It was my compassion that made me believe they should be in the open, not hidden away.” Following graduation, Oakley said she plans on finding a job in either an elementary, middle or high school near Eaton and working with children and adolescents with special needs.

Mission Statement
Saturday, May 7, 2011
For starters, the soccer team finished fourth in the Big Sky and completed the regular season with 10 wins, most for the program since 2002, and featured 10 players named to all-conference teams, including Danielle Birdsall, who was named to the first team and took home the Big Sky Offensive MVP award. The swimming & diving team had four athletes named to all-conference teams and women’s golf finished third in the Big Sky last
week behind a stellar performance by Carleigh Silvers, who had a third-place individual finish. The wrestling team had two representatives, Justin Gaethje and Casey Cruz, at the NCAA Championships this season. The volleyball team finished second in the Big Sky and took the eventual champion to five games in the title match. Two volleyball players were named to the all-conference first team, and Amanda Arterburn was named the school’s first-ever Big Sky Libero of the Year winner. One win was all that kept the women’s basketball team from hosting the conference tournament, but to finish second in the Big Sky after being projected to finish eighth is very impressive. Head coach Jaime White was named cocoach of the year and had three players named to all-conference teams. Additionally, Courtney Stoermer and D’shara Strange were named, and rightfully so, the codefensive player of the year and
outstanding freshman, respectively. The football team now has a new football coach, Earnest Collins Jr., who many on campus, including myself, believe can help turn this program around. In the few times I’ve spoken with Collins, he exudes a passion for football and for coaching at his alma mater that hasn’t been seen in a while. It’s refreshing to have that kind of positivity, and I believe come next fall there will be a drastic change in the number of wins the football team has. New coaches Carl Iwasaki and Mark Montgomery have the baseball and softball teams, respectively, near the top of their conferences. Iwasaki, another UNC alumnus, has also shown his pride in being coach of the Bears, a positive sign in my mind of progress to come in future seasons. And you can’t forget the men’s basketball team, led by B.J. Hill, a first-year head coach who won coach of the year, and all the players who helped make it happen.
I’m sure I won’t be the only one who will never forget the team’s magical season and first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance. I was fortunate to be able to make the trip to Tucson, Ariz. and that experience will stay with me forever, as will this school year for all sports across the board. Such success can’t be measured easily, but taking into account how small of a school UNC is, athleticswise, that final measure is astronomical. The only way to repeat this success is to support our Bears more than ever next school year. They all gave us an athletic year to remember and we need to voice how thankful we are. So, let us raise our glass and honor these fine student-athletes, graduating or not, coaches and administrators. Say it with me now: Thank you, and go Bears! — Parker Cotton is a sophomore journalism and sociology major and the sports editor of The Mirror.

Professors clear offices, pack supplies, say goodbye to teaching at UNC BENJAMIN WELCH editor@uncmirror.com
As students pack their belongings and prepare to leave UNC after graduating, they can look forward to a future of new opportunities, excitement and the continual quest for knowledge. They are not the only ones leaving, though. Seven University of Northern Colorado professors are also cleaning out their offices and saying goodbye to the university. Bill Perrill, a criminal justice professor, is retiring after 10 years of teaching. Before coming to UNC, he spent 30 years in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. “A lot of what I brought to my teaching is my experience in prisons,” Perrill said. “My mark is that I can share realworld experience and apply it to criminal justice theory.” During his career in prisons, he served as a prison warden for 14 years in Duluth, Minn., Tucson, Ariz., Ray Brook, NY., Englewood, and SeaTac, Wash. He moved 22 times throughout his career. Perrill said his wife, who works for Poudre School District, is also retiring, and they plan to spend time scuba diving, fishing, remodeling their home and participating in volunteer work while considering whether to embark on a third career. Though the job market isn’t in the same state of economic success it once was, Perrill said helping students find their path in criminal justice was one of the most rewarding parts of the job. Hearing from former students who have found happiness and prosperity in the field was also a benefit. “If they like what they’re doing, it’s a success,” he said. Perrill was not only a
teacher, but said the life lessons students taught him made him a learner, as well. “Be patient to students, especially when they’re coming from the work world,” he said. “Your expectations may be too high, especially if they’re incoming freshmen or second-year students. Enjoy what they have to offer, because they’re a different generation.” Carolyn Edwards, who is the director of the School of Teacher Education this year, is also retiring after almost 15 years as a professor. Edwards also received her master’s and doctorate from UNC in 1989 and ‘96, respectively. Originally from Kansas, Edwards began teaching at Aims Community College, teaching reading and writing to students in a developmental services program, which measures the apti-
tude of incoming students to the college. Once she came to UNC, she frequently worked on national and state accreditation. In this year’s in-state accreditation, all areas of the university met all standards with no areas of concern, something Edwards said is unprecedented. “Accreditation, I think, has been my most serious contribution,” she said. During Edwards’ tenure, she also assisted in developing an electronic system for tracking candidates. Now, the state is implementing an identifying number for each teaching candidate to track their progress and how it is compared to those at other universities. The school recommends about 500 candidates each year. Edwards said she originally came to UNC to teach
because she lived in Greeley and found the school’s reading program a good fit. However, she said it’s now time to move on. “I haven’t had a lot of time for my family or grandkids, and they’re calling me, I hear that,” she said. During her tenure, Edwards also wrote numerous grants, something she said she enjoyed. One of her favorites was a partnership grant for developing math curriculum in elementary schools. “It helped me do my research, and I’m more about reading and writing, but I felt it was a real service to the community because we were able to serve about 100 kids in mathematics and tutoring in after-school programs,” she said. As a professional in the reading field, in which stu-
dents are currently seeing declining comprehension scores in standardized tests, Edwards offered advice to usher in a new era of reading and writing. Edwards said those working with developing students should remember that they are teaching to read and write as well as content and memorization, and this is a key to boosting English scores. “There are a lot of reading strategies that these teachers can teach to their kids to increase comprehension and teach them to be better writers,” she said. Edwards also works with incoming freshmen in preview days and new student orientations. She said UNC is a well-known institution for its teaching program, and students want to enroll to receive a high-quality education. “We don’t have to try
and sell our program,” she said. “People know we have the state mandate to be the provider of teacher preparation.” Barry Rothaus, a UNC history professor who has taught multiple generations of students, is retiring after 45 years. “When I was interviewed, I met the president (Darrell Holmes), and he said, ‘If you want to come to a university that is on the forefront of academic change, this is the place.’” Throughout his tenure, Rothaus said conversing with faculty and the camaraderie they shared was one of his favorite memories.

UNC leads athlete graduation rates PARKER COTTON sports@uncmirror.com
UNC student-athletes have made it a trend to graduate on time, evidenced by a yearly report published by the athletic department, and this year is no different. About 60 UNC student-athletes will graduate today, further boosting UNC’s already notable graduation rates for athletes. The 2010 Graduation Success Rate report, published in the fall, compares UNC’s athletes to those of the other eight Big Sky Conference universities even though only 11 of UNC’s 17 athletic teams compete in the Big Sky. Of the 11, UNC either leads or is tied for the lead in graduation success rate in five sports — men’s basketball (92 percent), football (72) and tennis (100), and women’s soccer (96) and tennis (100). UNC also leads the Big Sky as a whole with an 82 percent success rate for all sports, four percentage points higher than the next closest conference team (Eastern Washington) and three points higher than the NCAA Division I average. Jaime White, UNC’s women’s basketball coach, said recruiting intelligent and responsible players to the school has been the key for the university to achieving high team GPAs and graduation rates, specifically for the women’s basketball team.

“I think most of the time, most of the reflection on that good of a score comes from recruiting and recruiting kids that are committed, academically,” White said. White also said the women’s basketball team was 10th in NCAA Division I in team GPA three years ago, 18th last year, and she expects the team to be in the top 10 again this season. First-year football coach Earnest Collins Jr. said since he has gotten the position, he has made academics a focal point in how he runs the team. “First minute I got here, first meeting I had
with the players I talked about the importance of academics and what it means to me,” Collins said. “I tell the guys all the time that about 99.9 percent of them won’t make it to the NFL, so you better focus on getting that degree.” UNC Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Success Jimmy Henderson said the high success rate of athletes is not by accident. “I think the reason we’re top in the conference and above the NCAA average is largely because we have a staff, including our administration and our coaching staffs and pretty much everybody
here, that has the same focus,” Henderson said. “And that focus is that these are students here to play their sport.” Because the members of the athletic department have been adamant in making sure academics play an important part in the athletes’ college experience, Henderson said that mentality rubs off on the students. “I think it’s just that environment that’s created that allows this to happen because everyone buys into it,” Henderson said. “So when you have a coaching staff that believes in this, the students believe in graduation.”
Thus, Naibauer found a new love for life’s grandeur — something, she feels, is best represented in artistic expression. The blossoming artist wanted to show young people that art can be more powerful than scientific theorems, so she decided to become an educator. “Right now, in the school system, it’s all about ‘A plus B equals C’… but I think it’s important that students learn to think for themselves; knowledge of art can do that,” Naibauer said. “I encourage critical thinking with my students.” Out of 1,200 art students at UNC, six were selected by their respective professors
for the Angie Southard Award, which recognizes academic excellence and also comes with a financial stipend. “She is very creative, talented and, yes, a big dreamer,” said T.S. Berger, an arts and design professor. Naibauer said she felt honored and blessed to have been given the award. She also said she was grateful to the professors who nominated her. Naibauer recently finished student teaching at both Butler Elementary School in Fort Lupton and Greeley West High School. Shortly after her student teaching, she was offered a position at Yuma High School.
