Barbecue begins post-graduation relationships UNC Alumni Association hosts outdoor banquet to congratulate graduates CARMEN BRADY news@uncmirror.com

The UNC Alumni Association hosted its fourth annual senior send-off barbecue Tuesday at the Judy Farr Center. The event provided dinner, drinks and was free to all graduating seniors. The ticket price was $5 for others. Entertainment was provided by a student band, which included members who are graduating. Alumni and graduating seniors also had the opportunity to have their photo taken with the alumni bear. About 500 seniors showed up to the barbecue, with 100 additional attendees. Michael Johnston, vice president of Alumni and Donor

We’re here to encourage alumni and graduates to get involved with the university.

— Randy Watkins, a board member and treasurer of the UNC Alumni Association Relations, said the event was mainly to welcome seniors to the alumni family of the university and to make them aware of the facilities provided by the association. “We try to create this home away from home atmosphere,” Johnston said. “That’s the purpose of trying to get the seniors to step into this — this place will

be a place they can get back together with their classmates and faculty members, just so they have a place to congregate.” The event, though geared toward seniors, had members of every class present. “We have student volunteers from every class, as well as alumni volunteers,” Johnston said. Randy Watkins, a board member and treasurer of the University of Northern Colorado Alumni Association, said he thinks it is important for graduates to be the aware of the opportunities present through the association. “We’re here to encourage alumni and graduates to get involved with the university,”

Watkins said. “We kind of act as ambassadors to the university. We support events for former graduates and are here as a resource to former graduates.” Andrew Dame, associate vice president of Alumni and Donations, also said he thought

it was necessary for the graduates to connect to the university post graduation. He said the program is very helpful in helping that bond last. “We just want to welcome everyone back and send them off in style,” Dame said.

Residence hall veteran leaves for graduate school JORDANE HARTBAUER news@uncmirror.com

At the end of this school year, the students of Lawrenson Hall will say goodbye to their current hall director, Shawn Brackett. Brackett has been the hall director of Lawrenson since August 2008. Brackett graduated from UNC in 2008 and became the hall director for Lawrenson that summer. After he leaves, he said he will take part in an Association of College and University Housing Officers International internship in Missouri. He then plans to attend graduate school at Compson University in South Carolina.

“One of my favorite t h i n g s about being the hall director of Lawrenson was seeing Shawn Brackett how people is a UNC alumgrow over nus and was the the course hall director of of a year in Lawrenson Hall a different for two years. way than a person does being a (resident assistant) because I think that by being an RA you see fewer people, and it is more hands-on.” Brackett said. “Being a hall director, you

see more people in a different way, so it is kind of nice to see them grow and change.” Brackett first became an RA in McCowen Hall. He said he enjoyed the two years he has spent at Lawrenson, and has many memories, be he said he thinks it is time for him to continue his education. One of the things he said he will miss the most is being able to get to know the students who live in the hall. He also said he has some good advice for the new hall director. “(He should) be open to the way that Lawrenson is,” he said. “It is a lot different than the traditional residence hall. There is

This was Shawn’s home — it wasn’t just his place of employment. Lawrenson was his home, and he made it feel like it was everybody else’s home, too.

— Justin Neuman, a senior finance major who lived in Lawrenson Hall an older, more diverse group of students, and it is just a different world in here. What may work in other communities

does not work in Lawrenson. Students of Lawrenson Hall said they will miss Brackett. The staff and Community Council threw him a surprise party to show their appreciation. “This was Shawn’s home — it wasn’t just his place of employment,” said Justin Neuman, a senior finance major, who lived in Brackett’s hall. “Lawrenson was his home, and he made it feel like it was everybody else’s home, too.” Jamie Newton, a sophomore psychology and political science major, was also a resident of Lawrenson this year. “Shawn has a way of kindling flames of passion,” Newton said. “He will be missed.”

Student writers organization celebrates annual publication SEAN PLAZA news@uncmirror.com

The United Students Literary Voices club ended a challenging and unique year with a barbecue on April 30 at the Garden Theatre

to celebrate the release of the annual student literary publication, The Crucible. Brenden McHenry, a junior theater education major and club president, said the barbecue was a first-time event for the club, one of

many new tactics the club employed this year. “Our goal this year was to show that literary arts had a place on this campus,” McHenry said. “We did a lot of things differently to show the student body that we exist.” The get-together consisted of readings by authors published in The Crucible and open mic events. McHenry said the idea was to celebrate the release of the publication by showcasing the author’s and their work in a public setting. Sarah Poole, a junior English major and club secretary, talked about the difficulties involved in putting an event like this together. “It took months of planning, since we started in January,” Poole said. “There was a lot of back-andforth communication between us and the Student Activities and Finance offices. Getting funding was key and, obviously, not easy.” She said despite the obstacles, the club members wanted to put this together to celebrate the maga-

zine being published before finals week — funding usually prevented this in previous years. McHenry and Poole both said they were overjoyed by the turnout and hope to make this event a tradition for the club. McHenry described how involved the creation process for the magazine was. “We usually take submissions

from the annual Rosenberry awards, and then ask for submissions from outside authors,” he said. “All eight members of the club then go through the submissions, and we vote on each one.” The basic layout was created by the club’s vice president, and the minutia of the layout was voted See Magazine, Page 11

Students enter real world with uncertainty, hope For many graduating students, today marks a time when they can finally say goodbye to wildly overpriced textbooks, painfully drawnout lectures and the epic crunch of finals week. However, the end of their academic careers also means it is time to say farewell to many friends, parental reliance and the comfort of knowing that there’s plenty of time to fully grow up. Many of them must shelve their affinities for procrastination and beer pong in the interest of preparing for “the real world” — a realm that is currently more competitive,

sumed by the marathon of part-time jobs, study groups and extracurricular activities knows that prioritizing and strong commitment are essential in accomplishing what the majority of the world will never achieve: earning a college degree. Though they may endure a grind of astronomical proportions, graduates should rest easy knowing they’re capable of attaining all of their goals and aspirations. They’ve made it this far; and although it may have taken four, five or six years to gain, that piece of paper will eventually pay off.

Optimism: scarce resource for those graduating this year Mitchell WOLL

is a far cry from campus life, where everyone was seemingly on the same playing field and bonded over the ups and downs of UNC living. But suddenly, the college bubble has popped, and young people are left wondering what to do with all of the pieces of themselves they have fused together over the years. For a lot of graduates, it will be a rough transition that will require a lot of optimism and patience; but perhaps the strongest weapon that will aide their battle in “the real world” is the knowledge they gained in college. fickle and unforgiving. Adapting to life after college in this difficult time can be testing, worrisome, excruciating and, above all, stressful. While some graduates will be lucky enough to quickly land jobs that are related to their field of study, others will have to rely on plan B or C … or D, E, F and G. Some people will leave the university and be coerced to move back in with their mothers and fathers and settle for jobs they are extremely over qualified for and turned down on jobs they are severely under qualified for. It’s a world that

actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome. However, it does not assert how tough this inclination is to come by for today’s college graduates. A lot of them leave school unemployed and without many prospects in an economy still suffering from the financial collapse of a couple years ago. Many, like me, will move back into their parents’ house to wander the post-

apocalyptic job market searching for some glimmering opportunity. A little optimism exists, though. The economy has rebounded. The gross domestic product rose 3.2 percent last quarter, 5.6 the fourth quarter of 2009 and 2.2 percent in the fifth quarter. Is this any indication that grads will have an easier time finding a job? As I learned while earning my minor, the answer to any economic question is always “it depends.” When an economy contracts, optimism can be a delusion. Sure, the numbers tell a feel-good story, but they don’t give all the details. What is more important are what industries are helping increase the GDP. I could list them, but that

alludes to whether these industries align with college graduates’ degrees. OK, here’s one: pornography. I didn’t think so. When I was offered to write a column for the graduation issue of The Mirror, I was excited to get the chance. But, I’m not writing this simply to be a buzz kill. Actually, I want to point out there exists a stark realism in graduating from school. Students are no longer in the cozy buffer stage between their teenage years and adulthood, a.k.a. the real world. What’s real is optimism will be a scarce resource for most grads during the next few weeks or even months. Guaranteed, they will be discouraged. Yet, today, during these moments of graduation, graduates’ inclination to put the

most favorable construction upon actions and events, and their anticipation of the best possible outcome is gushing. Despite moving back into Mom’s and Dad’s and scouring the economic wasteland, my message to the grads is to put all your worries aside for now. Truly enjoy this day. Now is a golden moment in your lifetime. When I was offered to write this column, I loathed the idea of it being another cliché graduation motif. Like another one of those “oh, the places you’ll go” type things. Nevertheless, here’s another cliché. Consider this my bittersweet carpe diem speech. Congratulations Class of 2010. Thanks for reading. — Mitchell Woll is a senior journalism major and a sports reporter for The Mirror.

Student body president reflects on time at UNC, bids farewell to campus Justin PUCKETT

news@uncmirror.com

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you already mastered, you will never grow. — Ronald E. Osborn This is a quote I have tried to live every day of my college career. I first want to thank everyone at UNC for contributing to my amazing college experiences for the past four years. I have seen, done and experienced so much during my time at UNC, from a 17-year-old Hawaiian student with no expectation of becoming Student Body President. Someone once told me, “A person is only as great as the average of their five closest friends. So, I attribute most of my success to the

people around me who supported me throughout my college experience. I would like to thank my parents, Fuku and Julie; brothers, Brandon and Mason; mentors, Evan Welch, Raul Cardenas and Jeremy Walsleben; and peers, Kindal Konechne, Ross Jennings and many others I don’t have room to mention. I also want to recognize the different organizations which have helped me become who I am today: Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, UNC Men’s Club Soccer Team, Asian Pacific American Student Services, Delta Sigma Pi, SRC/Student Senate and the Hawaii Club. Through all the people and organizations I have been involved in, the University of Northern Colorado has truly brought education to life for me during my time at UNC; and, if you allow it, it can for you, as well.

I am sad to see this chapter in my life end, but I am brimming with excitement to begin the next. I will miss the friendships and relationships I have formed at UNC, but know they will last forever regardless of where the blue and gold road takes me in the future. UNC has changed so much in the past four years with the building of the new resident halls on West Campus and the development of UNC Bear Pride. I have gained inspiration from the students at UNC. I am excited by the potential I see in all of my peers as the future leaders of Colorado and America. It has been an honor to be your representative of the university this past year. I will always remember this life changing experience. Before I leave my home at UNC, I want to leave you all with a little advice. Make it a point to always push yourself to achieve new

heights and utilize all of the resources you have around you. College is a place where what you get out of it is equal to what you put in to it, you have one life to live so make the most of it, work hard and

play harder. Always remember where you came from and what came of you in your fruitful years of being a Bear. — Justin Puckett will be graduating today with a degree in business.

Seniors carry influence on, off court JORDAN FREEMYER sports@uncmirror.com

Senior guards Will Figures and Yahosh Bonner have taken different paths to and through the UNC men’s basketball program, but both have left their mark on the team’s future. Figures has been with the program for the past four seasons. He as seen the Bears build from a 4-24 season his freshman year to a 25-8 record this season. “I came here because I wanted to be a part of the changing of a program,” Figures said during the season. University of Northern Colorado head coach B.J. Hill said Figures was a big reason for the team’s improvement. “Will’s been here since the beginning,” Hill said. “He’s been a big part of the total evolution of the program, we couldn’t have done it without him.”

Figures led UNC in scoring as a senior with 16.6 points per game, including a career-high 33 in a loss at Weber State. Figures tied for the team lead in scoring with 12.1 points per game as a junior. Bonner came to UNC after spending a year at Cochise College in Arizona and one at Salt Lake Community College in Utah. “I really feel like I have a kind of family here at UNC. I’ve felt really welcome,” Bonner said. Bonner arrived on campus two years ago after being recruited by Hill, who was an assistant under former head coach Tad Boyle at the time. “Coach (Boyle) called me and said, ‘Go find a point guard, we need one,’” Hill said. As a senior, Bonner was named the Big Sky Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year after holding the league’s top scorers in check throughout the season. “What he brought was that

defensive mindset that we as a staff have tried to implement,” Hill said. Bonner said he has a job lined up after graduation at Wells Fargo Financial in Littleton, but that he wants to explore his options to play professionally overseas, as his former UNC teammate Jabril Banks is doing with Sport Plaza Casablanca in Morocco. Hill said Bonner and Figures also contributed to the team off the court, spending time with recruits during campus visits. “They’ve been great recruiters for us,” Hill said. “Great ambassadors for our program in the community.” Hill said the team will miss both the consistence and effort provided by Bonner and Figures. “With both of those guys, you knew what you were going to get,” Hill said. “Very coachable, hard workers and great teammates; that’s hard to replace.”

Wrestler looks to future in coaching MITCHELL WOLL sports@uncmirror.com

UNC senior wrestler Tony Mustari, right, takes on Oklahoma State’s Chris Notte in a bout earlier this year. Mustari is looking forward to a career in coaching after graduation.

For most, putting together a decent résumé consists of working several jobs, but for senior Tony Mustari, putting together a good résumé consisted of pins and wins. The 125-pound wrestler graduates from the University of Northern Colorado today with a bachelor’s degree in sport and exercise science and will have a deep well of collegiate wrestling experience to draw from. Mustari, a Greeley native, started wrestling for UNC in

2005 as a redshirt freshman. He was recruited to UNC from Greeley Central High School by former UNC head wrestling coach Jack Maughan. “He was a top guy in the state as a senior in high school,” said Maughan, who is now the associate director of development for athletics at UNC. “He took a chance on us in the transition from Division II to Division I. It was important to us to sign that marquee guy.” Marquee indeed, as Mustari left his mark on UNC’s wrestling program, totaling 90 actual wins — excluding victories from for-

feits — enough to place him ninth among UNC wrestlers with the most wins, just past Lanny Paulson (1980-’83). He also made three straight trips to the NCAA National Championships. Yet, with his collegiate wrestling career at an end, Mustari had an eye toward his future. He wants to become a coach, but like most seniors, Mustari’s post-graduation plans are fairly uncertain. He had a few options lined up, like coaching at a camp in See Wrestler, Page 10

Coaches see doors open for graduating grappler Wrestler from Page 9 Fort Collins. Nonetheless, the team captain has also speculated on returning to UNC as a graduate student and an assistant coach. “Depending on the coaching situation here, he could come back as a grad assistant,” UNC head wrestling coach Ben Cherrington said. “I’m sure there’s a lot of places across the nation that wouldn’t mind having him on staff.” Coaching comes somewhat naturally, Mustari said about himself. At any given UNC wrestling match this year,

Tony Mustari said he may return to UNC next season as an assistant coach.

Mustari could be seen next to his coach, stalking the m a t ’ s perimeter, observing his teamm a t e s ’ b o u t s , shouting and gestur-

ing technical advice. “(It) makes me happy to show somebody technique and then to see them succeed using the stuff that they’ve learned,” Mustari

said. “I’ve always felt like I could connect with people really good, like, coaching-wise. Even guys on the team, I feel like I can help them a lot, too. Sometimes — through the experiences I’ve had and the situations I’ve been in — I feel like it’s an ability that comes somewhat natural to me.” Wherever Mustari ends up coaching — whether it’s at the collegiate or the high school level — his natural desire for coaching will certainly compliment his knowledge and understanding of wrestling. “I see a bright future for him in coaching,” Maughan said.

Photo shoot organizers aim to freeze intolerance End Hate begins national campaign to end violence against LGBT community KRISTEN MARTIN news@uncmirror.com

UNC students jump started awareness for equality for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community across America by an inspiring photo-shoot Monday in the University Center. Mike Manning, a senior business major, worked with In and Out, the LGBT on-campus club, to help raise awareness of the prejudice against homosexuality and gender, as well as help support the club financially. “Hate has silenced the people in the LGBT community in society, and this photo-shoot signifies the end of being silent,” Manning said. Manning said his reason to raise awareness of the issue was for an older brother of a friend. “He was a father of two and divorced his wife and then came out,” he said. “His father could not handle it, and it resulted in him committing suicide.” Manning also said there are eight other universities that have picked up on this idea and will be doing this event next semester. “The more people who join in, the more exposure there is of our reaction to the discrimination,” he

said. “A photo is simple, and you do not have to be experts. It’s a great way to let the world know your passion about equality.” Manning also invited candidate for United States Senate, Andrew Romanoff, to come speak to the students of the LGBT community for inspiration and information. Romanoff said he thinks gay rights are just as important as civil rights passed in 1964. Students were able to create a poster with phrases to encourage others. Eddie Sheehy, a senior secondary education major, said he has struggled for five years with being gay and a Christian. His sign read, “I end hate because ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ shouldn’t come with stipulations.” “My sign covers sexism, racism and hate against sexuality,” Sheehy said. “I went through three ministries to try to convince myself I was straight, which didn’t work because when I was 18 years old, I came out to my parents, and I could not stand them not looking me in the eye.” Olivia Farinelli, a sophomore vocal performance major, made a sign that read, “I end hate because God loves everyone.”

Pages turn for literary club Magazine from Page 3 on by the club members. The magazine publishes everything from poetry and art, to fiction and non-fiction. In addition to the barbecue and the early publication of the magazine, the USLV did one more thing differently this year: They published a separate magazine in February. “It was a magazine designed to

take the best of The Crucible’s 20year history and put it out there for the masses,” Poole said. Drew Brendel, a UNC alumnus and one of the authors published in this year’s Crucible, said he enjoyed the barbecue and described why he wanted to submit his pieces. “It was my first time submitting anything for publication, and it was a skill I wanted to learn sooner rather than later,” Brendel said.

Farinelli said she found out about the event via her sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha. “I thought I’d come spread a little love,” Farinelli said. “God made these people in their own way and loves them for it. Plus, hate is a really wasted emotion.” President of In and Out Veronica Collins a senior history and secondary education major, said the club has about 80 members. “Gay rights is a really important issue, and these students are paying to come support us,” Collins said. “It’s a really good feeling to see that. So far, we have done a lot of educational events to help get the community integrated.” The club members said they also plan to attend Pride Fest in Denver, as well as the AIDS walk. Children’s carnival to promote literacy, entertain RUBY WHITE news@uncmirror.com In celebration of Children’s Day, the men of Nu Alpha Kappa fraternity will host their third annual Nakland, a children’s carnival, from noon to 4 p.m., May 16, at UNC’s Garden Theatre. The carnival, which was originally scheduled for April 25, will feature a variety of games, inflatable houses and slides, food, face painting and book giveaways. The event will be free and open to the public. In addition to the free fun, live entertainment will also be provided. Dance performances from Danza Azteca and Mexican Baile Folklorico will take place at the Garden Theatre’s stage. Community members are encouraged to bring children of any age to the carnival. The inaugural Nakland took

place in spring of 2008, and each year since, attendance to the event seems to have grown. Men of the fraternity said the event is put on each year to show appreciation to the children in our community and to promote literacy within the future leaders of our world. Nelson Rodriguez, the president of Nu Alpha Kappa fraternity and a senior sociology and political science major, said the organization brings Nakland to the University of Northern Colorado’s campus for the

unification of the campus and the Greeley community. Organizations from UNC and community centers come to support the event by volunteering for set up, event facilities and clean-up. Last year, hundreds of children, community members, students and faculty came to the carnival. The men of Nu Alpha Kappa said they hope for another great turnout this year. They said they predict nice weather on the day of the event so many children can come and enjoy the free carnival in their own backyard.
