UNC Wilmington The University of North Carolina Wilmington boasts of undergraduate learning opportunities second to none and professors whose commitment to knowledge is surpassed only by their dedication to students. It offers effective learning environments that integrate teaching and mentoring with research and service at a level that rivals exclusive research institutions of similar size. Students consistently praise the quality of their interactions with faculty and express a high degree of satisfaction with their overall educational experience. The faculty culture emphasizes teaching and mentoring, incorporating research as an important component of the undergraduate learning experience and an opportunity to have an impact on the state’s most pressing issues. International experiences are encouraged through study abroad programs and language and culture studies on campus. Recognized in recent years by several national publications as a top public undergraduate institution, UNCW continues its pursuit to soar to even greater heights. “The UNCW of today is a fantastic university,” said Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo. “The momentum that propels us to soar higher derives from our students’ achievements, faculty and staff accomplishments and strong support from alumni, friends, trustees, volunteer board members and other donors.” For 12 consecutive years UNCW has ranked in the top 10 of the best public regional universities in the South by U.S.News & World Report. For the sixth consecutive year, UNCW received the “Best in the Southeast” and “Best Value” designations by The Princeton Review. It is one of only four North Carolina public universities included in Peterson’s Competitive Colleges 2008: Top Colleges for Top Students. This year, UNCW joined the ranks of an exclusive group of higher education institutions included in the Fiske Guide to Colleges. Established as Wilmington College in 1947, the university is made up of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Cameron School of Business, the School of Nursing, the Watson School of Education and the Graduate School. UNC Wilmington offers bachelor’s degrees in 52 majors, 35 master’s degrees, a Ph.D. in marine biology and an Ed.D. in educational leadership and administration. Degree programs in the School of Nursing, Watson School of Education and Cameron School of Business are designed specifically to serve professional workforce needs in the region. The College of Arts and Sciences stresses applied learning experiences across the liberal arts disciplines to prepare its students to bridge the gap between the classroom and the complex problems of 21st century communities. UNCW’s strength in the natural sciences, especially biological sciences, chemistry, geological sciences and other disciplines that form the core of its internationally respected niche in marine science, is the result of decades of intentional focus and investment. In the arts and literature, UNCW’s high profile programs are film studies and creative writing. The Department of Film Studies takes advantage of the location of UNCW in Wilmington, N.C., the home of Screen Gems Studios, the largest full-service motion picture facility in the United States east of California. The Master of Fine Arts in creative writing is one of the most respected on the East Coast, cited as one of “Five Top Innovative/ Unique Programs in Creative Writing” in 2007 by Atlantic Monthly. The university has taken a leadership role in the long-term economic, environmental, educational, social and cultural health of the region. It has a strong commitment to adult learners and offers short, non-credit university courses, seminars, lectures, travel excursions and other educational opportunities. Overall, the university has an annual $500 million economic impact on the eight-county region. This represents 10 percent of total economic activity in the seven-county region.

UNCW Administration Rosemary DePaolo, Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo became chancellor and chief executive officer of the University of North Carolina Wilmington in July 2003. During her tenure, the university has attained national prominence as a model for teaching, research, and service. Chancellor DePaolo has led the university to greatness by developing strategies and processes to recruit and retain the highest quality of diverse faculty and staff, attract the highest quality of students, reduce faculty-to-student ratios, improve retention and graduation rates, provide the buildings necessary to support a world class campus environment, and encourage more private philanthropic support than ever. She has overseen the construction and renovation of $250 million in public and private supported projects resulting in 15 new or renovated buildings. A $30.1 million state-of-the art nursing building is under construction, and the third phase of new campus housing, as well as the first parking deck on campus, opened in August 2009. The additional housing brought UNCW to its goal of 40 percent of its undergraduate students living on campus. Private support has increased dramatically under her leadership. Generous supporters have allowed UNCW to set fundraising records for four years in a row. During this period, donors gave the university more than $30 million to support scholarships, professorships, academics, faculty research, athletics, student life experiences, and more, resulting in an increase in the university’s endowment by more than
50 percent. Under her guidance, UNCW achieved Millennial Campus designation of several sites to be used for public/private research ventures capitalizing on the university’s strengths in marine biotechnology, among others. She has encouraged the university community to work closely with government, health, education, non-profit and business leaders in the region through a number of formal and informal collaborations, including a recently established partnership with the Wilmington Housing Authority to provide educational services at one of their community centers. Chancellor DePaolo is actively involved in a wide range of civic activities, including service on a number of boards. These include serving on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the North Carolina Chamber, the state’s largest and most influential business group, Ex-officio member of the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Southeastern Advisory Committee for Biotechnology of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center and Executive Board of the North Carolina Campus Compact. A nationally recognized champion for higher education, Chancellor DePaolo served on a Higher Education Cabinet established by the New York Times and the Chronicle of Higher Education. She has served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and is also a current member of the Colonial Athletic Association’s Council of Presidents. UNCW has been praised by various publications for quality, affordability, and innovation. U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked the university as one of the top 10 public master’s universities in the South, and Forbes placed UNCW second among best public universities in North Carolina. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance listed UNCW as one of the top 25 “Best Values” among public universities in the nation and one of the top three in North Carolina. Before arriving in Wilmington, Chancellor DePaolo was president of Georgia College & State University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Queens College of the City University of New York and a master of arts and a doctorate in 18th century English literature from Rutgers University. A native of Long Island, N.Y, she is married to Fred Wharton, a retired professor of English.

She played a key role on KU’s fundraising team that has racked up $19 million in facility improvements in three years. In addition, she helped the Jayhawks increase their annual giving in athletics from $5 million in 2003 to $12 million. Mehrtens has truly been an advocate of the student-athlete. She developed KU’s Student-Athlete Development/Leadership Program and worked with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to raise $1 million to help fund women’s sports facilities. Season Outlooks The Seahawk men enter the 2009-10 season with one goal and one goal only, and that is to win their ninth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title. With 23 returning letterwinners from last year’s championship squad, head coach Dave Allen will again look to senior leadership to make its mark. “We are fortunate in that last year’s juniors were able to step up and contribute and it was a definite boost for us at the CAA Championships’” said Allen. “We’re very balanced again this year and that’s important when championships come around.” Sprints/Freestyle Senior Rob Anderson enters his final season with the Seahawks looking to conclude what has been a solid career with the Seahawks. While Anderson heads a solid freestyle corps, he’ll be aided by juniors Bobby Guntoro, who is in his first season of full eligibility, Tucker Waldron and sophomore Alex Aguilar. “Alex had a very good spring and summer and has come back a different swimmer. His hard work will help us strengthen our sprints. Freshmen Michael Williams and Robbie Munch are expected to help provide depth early in the season and improve in both the 50 and 100 Free as the season progresses. Middle & Distance/Freestyle “We’re very fortunate to return a group that did a lot for us last year.” Returning for the Seahawks are juniors Luke Murphy, Scott Royal, Justin Eldridge and sophomore Gavin Spake. All four scored valuable points at the Championships, including Murphy who set a trio of school records in the 500, 1000 and 1650 Freestyle. UNCW added a solid transfer in the form of sophomore Mike Smiechowski, who set a pair of Niagara school records in the 1000 and 1650 Freestyles. “Mike already has proven that he can compete on this level and we look for him to contribute immediately.” Butterfly Sophomore Brandon Hicks leads an impressive list of returners for the Seahawks in the Fly events. As a freshman, Hick broke a school record in the 200 Fly that stood since 1982. Waldron, Guntoro, Spake and senior Pete Humphries will give UNCW solid efforts in both the 100 and 200 Fly again this season. Backstroke Going into the 2008-09 season the Seahawks knew they were deep in the Backstroke, but weren’t sure if it would be an event that they could score enough points. Well those fears were put aside as seniors Andrew Rogers (CAA 100 Backstroke champion) and Pete Humphries and sophomores David Thayer, Aidan Akkari (200 Backstroke Champion) and Guntoro were able to step up and score valuable points. Rogers set a school record in the 100 while Akkari did the same in the 200. Adding to the quality depth that UNCW has built is freshman Daniel Crow, who can help immediately. Breaststroke Breaststroke was another area of concern for the Seahawks last season, but senior Bennett Rainey moved over from another event and gave the Seahawks a spark by setting a school record in the 200. Junior Tim Mann and sophomore Bo Fethe also came on strong in the later parts of the season, showing they would be able to plug any holes this season. Also moving over and bolstering the Breaststroke was Anderson, who set a school record in the 100. With the arrival of Ray McGorry, the event has become a strength for UNCW. IM “This may be our deepest and most talented event we have. We have a multitude of swimmers who are more than capable to swim either the 200 or 400 or both if needed.” Rainey, Eldridge, Murphy, Hicks, Thayer, Spake, Chris Clark and Guntoro and newcomer Ray McGorry also will have an opportunity to get their swims in the IMs.
The Seahawk women are eager to continue where they left off last year at the CAA Championships as they rose up the standings to rally for a third place finish behind strong efforts from a deep junior class that is excited to bring a championship back to UNCW. “We’ve addressed several areas where depth hurt us last year and will be stronger and more balanced this year. We have numbers both in depth and quality. This year’s seniors are as strong as we’ve had recently.” Sprints/Freestyle There is no secret in the CAA who will key that senior group as senior Caitlin Kirsteier, who owns UNCW’s records in the 50 and 100, returns. Joining Kirsteier are sophomores Anna Munger and Mattie Riley, who both made an impact last season. “Both Munger and Riley were nice surprises as they quickly adapted to the collegiate level.” Looking to make a similar move will be freshmen Carly Tanner and Nicole Miller, who will grow with experience. Middle & Distance/Freestyle The loss of school record holder Danielle Mortenson will hurt, but Allen is excited with what he’s seen from freshman Rachel Wilson. “Rachel has been tremendous in preseason workouts and we feel she will be able to step in quickly.” Also looking to ease the loss of Mortensen will be the combination of junior Sabina Sinksa, senior Meredith Banks and Anna Tommerdahl and sophomores Kasey Richardson, Libby Mayock and Alden Dyer. Butterfly Perhaps UNCW’s strongest event is the Butterfly. Kirsteier is the reigning three-time CAA Champion in the 100 Fly. Sinksa also will contribute in both the 100 and 200 as will sophomore Caroline Little. “We were able to add quality depth in freshmen Marissa McJunkin and Ellen Velte. Both are very capable to make an immediate impact on our team.” Backstroke The Backstroke also will be a source of strength for the Seahawks with the return of seniors Michelle Baric and Laura Chinni, both of whom posted good results at the CAA Championships. Senior Chantal Woodard and sophomores Hilary Fritz, Dyer, Caroline Little and Stephanie Florenza are joined by freshmen Kathryn Yarbrough and Nicole Miller in making UNCW even tougher in the Backstroke events. Breaststroke Sophomores Caroline Huber and Kasey Richards were able to help in the Breaststroke events. Freshman Carly Tanner has shown that she too will be able to make splash as a rookie for the Seahawks and has looked good in early season workouts. IM The women should be able to draw strength and show versatility in the IM events. Chinni, Huber, Baric, Dyer and Woodard gave strong swims last year and with the addition of McJunkin, UNCW will continue to post solid outings in both the 200 and 400. Diving UNCW returns all three letterwinners from last year in junior Julia Newbold and sophomores Kristin Harris and Meg Gildea. “Diving will be an improved area for us this season. All of our returners gain invaluable experience last year and we were able to add some talented newcomers to the lineup this year.” Joining Seahawk Diving are freshmen Amanda MacCreery and Alexa McCarthy.
Diving Junior Kobi Salinas looks to return to his freshman form after a disappointing sophomore season. As a freshman, he was the CAA Diver-of-the-Year. Senior Matt Arb posted a pair of top-10 finishes in the 1-and 3-meter boards at the CAA Championships. Rounding out the Seahawks on the board is sophomore Robbie McNeill, who sat out last season following back surgery, and freshman Peter Waters.
Senior Caitlin Kirsteier is the reigning three-time CAA Champion in the 100 Butterfly.

Seahawk Natatorium The home of the Seahawks is the spacious Seahawk Natatorium, site of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships six times. Opened in the fall of 1977, the facility is one of the finest in the collegiate ranks, featuring eight lanes that span the 25x20 yard pool where the Seahawks stage all of their intercollegiate meets. The main pool holds 185,000 gallons of water. A separate diving well, containing 250,000 gallons, descends 17 feet, giving the team an all-around facility. The diving area measures 45 x 60 feet and includes two three-meter and a pair of one-meter boards. Divers benefit from two cheese boards and two maxi-flex boards. The facility has been utilized extensively for prominent aquatic events. Several regional United States Swimming (USS) meets have been staged at the natatorium, making it the center for swimming events in southeastern North Carolina. Balcony seating for more than 400 fans provides an excellent view of the action. The facility is a favorite of the CAA. The conference meet was staged in the Seahawk Natatorium in 1986, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1995. Recent upgrades have kept the facility among the nation’s best. A new air-conditioning system has been installed, accoustical tiles have been added and an eight-lane printout Colorado scoreboard now displays times.

Aquahawks Continue To Boost Program With Support
The mission of the Aquahawk Club is to provide supplemental financial support for the men’s and women’s swimming & diving program through scholarship support, endowed scholarships and other operational expenditures not normally funded by the Department of Athletics. This support is under the guidance of the UNCW Student Aid Association and in compliance with all rules and regulations related to this support by the university, the Colonial Athletic Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. By providing financial support, the primary goal of the Aquahawks Club is to develop the competitive nature of UNC Wilmington swimming and diving, both in the CAA and also on the national level. “The Aquahawks began as a group of alumni who wanted to continue to contribute to the program,” said veteran coach Dave Allen. “While they do help us financially, their main contribution has been the unification of our past and present swimmers. We consider them to be active members of our program and allow our swimmers to have ties to our past successes. “Thanks to the Aquahawks, we have a beautiful record board on display in the Natatorium and a sound system for our home events. Aquahawk funds will be used to strengthen our scholarship budget.” 22 • 2009-10 Media Guide
UNCW Athletics Hall of Fame Four former swimming and diving standouts - Sam O’Leary, Janet Johnson, Burak Erdem and Amy Lewis Holland - have been enshrined into the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame, the school’s highest honor for former student-athletes, administrators and contributors.
Sam O’Leary - Inducted 1998
As UNC Wilmington’s first NCAA Division I All-America in swimming, Sam O’Leary’s legacy is a strong one. The Williamsville, N.Y., native became the school’s first NCAA Division I AllAmerican in 1982 when he finished 11th nationally in the 100-yard Butterfly. He was also a three-time Easterns champion in the Butterfly in 1980 and 1982. O’Leary still owns the school records in the 100 and 200-yard Butterfly, testimony to his dominance in the pool. He received a fellow award from the National Recreation and Parks Association in 1992, and has been very active with UNCW’s Onslow County Alumni Association since his graduation in 1983. O’Leary currently serves as director of the community services branch of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Janet Johnson - Inducted 1998
Janet Johnson, who achieved All-American status 13 times during her four-year career with the Seahawks, was one of the pioneers of women’s swimming at UNC Wilmington. The breaststroke specialist from Fayetteville, N.C., served notice immediately that she would be a key contributor to the program in 1980 when she earned AllAmerica designation in the 50-yard Breaststroke, 100-yard Breaststroke, 200-yard Breaststroke and 200-yard Medley Relay at the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Championships. She was an AIAW All-American again as a sophomore and junior before picking up National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-America honors in six events in 1984. Johnson, or “J.J.” as she is affectionately known, was an early member of the school’s ROTC program. She served as Cadet Commander of the ROTC Corps of Cadets and won the George Catlett Marshall ROTC Award in 1983. She was named to the 1983 edition of both Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities and Outstanding Young Women of America. Today, Johnson serves with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Florida, working on a white collar crime squad that concentrates on health care fraud.
Former Seahawk swimming standouts Janet Johnson, left, and Sam O’Leary, second from left, were among the six individuals inducted into the inaugural class of the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
Burak Erdem - Inducted 2002
One of the all-time greats in the swimming program’s history, Burak Erdem left an indelible mark following a remarkable career from 1992-95. A native of Ankara, Turkey, Erdem was a four-time conference champion in the 200 Backstroke and left as the school record holder in nine events. He still holds the record in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Backstroke, 400 Freestyle Relay and 400 Medley Relay. Erdem earned the Sam O’Leary Outstanding Swimmer Award during his junior and senior years as the top performer in the men’s program. He also was singled out as the school’s top student-athlete for the 1995-96 school year as recipient of the Thomas V. Moseley Award following his senior year. Erdem also ranks as the school’s only three-time Easterns champion, winning the 200 Individual Medley in 1993, the 100 Backstroke in 1995 and the 200 Backstroke in 1995. Moreover, Erdem was an NCAA “B” qualifier in the 200 Backstroke during the 1994 season. A resident of Irving, Texas, Erdem works for Sovana, Inc., a marketing firm, as international sales coordinator.
Burak Erdem, middle, is joined by his family and Coach Dave Allen following the 2002 UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Amy Lewis Holland - Inducted 2006
Amy Lewis helped establish a strong foundation for the women’s swimming & diving program during a remarkable four-year run in the early 1990’s. From 1990-93, Lewis set seven school records and captured the Eastern Championship in the 200 Freestyle in 1990. She was selected UNCW’s Outstanding Swimmer Award four straight years, a distinction no one else holds. Lewis, who also set six freshman marks in her first season in 1990, completed a degree in education in 1993. She was honored with the “Sallie Mae Teacher-ofthe-Year Award” from the Mecklenburg County school system in 1995 and was a Harris-Teeter “Teacher-of-the-Year” nominee the following year. Amy Lewis Holland, left, along with fellow 2006 Hal of Fame inductees, Bill Mayew, Mel Gibson and Eddie Booth.

CHAMPS/Life Skills Meets Student-Athlete Needs
To prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field, UNCW and the NCAA team up in the popular CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. UNCW is currently one of 664 institutions involved in the popular program. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is designed to provide student-athletes with the education and the experiences to assist them in bridging the gap between college life and professional life in the work world and to make meaningful contributions to their communities. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program focuses on five commitment areas viewed as critical to personal growth: (1) Academic Excellence - to support the academic progress of the studentathlete toward intellectual development and graduation. (2) Athletic Excellence - to build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete. (3) Personal Development - to support the development of a wellbalanced lifestyle for the student-athlete, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills. (4) Career Development - to encourage each student-athlete to develop and pursue their career and life goals. (5) Service - to engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities. The NCAA has worked with its member institutions and educational consultants to create instructional materials and program models to address the needs of today’s student-athletes. Topics such as diversity education, developing sexual responsibility, nutrition, eating disorder prevention and awareness, time management, community service and career development are just some of the areas covered within the curriculum. A freshman seminar course is designed to assist student-athletes in making the transition to college, this seminar focuses on college-level study skills, time management, awareness of available university services, etc. It is open only to entering freshmen and generates two hours of elective credit toward graduation.

Historic Wilmington affords visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy a bustling seaport rich in shopping, dining, culture and the arts, while being only minutes away from barrier islands, broad beaches and the intracoastal waterway. The 200-block Historic District highlighting the downtown area opens into a scenic riverfront park that overlooks the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. A beautifully restored battleship, the USS North Carolina was considered the greatest sea weapon in the world when commissioned in 1941. During World War II, “The Showboat” earned 15 battlestars and participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. A memorial since 1961, the battleship is dedicated to the men and women of all U.S. military services who defended our country during WWII. One of Wilmington’s most unique features is the city’s status as the leading entertainment production center in the Southeast. The city’s evolution into “Hollywood East” began when Dino DeLaurentis shot Stephen King’s Firestarter in 1984. One year later, Dino DeLaurentis constructed a studio facility in the Port City and the complex, now owned by EUE/Screen Gems, is the largest production studio east of Hollywood, offering nine sound stages on a 32-acre site near the Wilmington International Airport. Numerous movies, television series and commericals have been filmed in Wilmington. The popular show, “Dawson’s Creek,” was produced in Wilmington and shot frequently on the UNCW campus as well as Warner Bros. hit “One Tree Hill.” A film-friendly community, Wilmington residents have embraced the industry, often appearing as “extras” in movies. It’s not uncommon for celebrities the likes of Sandra Bullock, Nick Nolte, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise and Dennis Hopper to be seen dining at a restaurant, shopping at the mall or just simply walking along the shore. Wrightsville Beach, just minutes away from Wilmington’s downtown area, is a year-round island resort. Wide, uncrowded beaches, full service marinas and a variety of accommodations are complemented by excellent seafood restaurants, specialty shops and exciting nightlife.
