Credentials
All requests for media credentials must be made as early as possible by contacting UNCW’s Sports Information Office. Credentials are issued only to accredited members of the working media. All requests are evaluated and prioritized by the SID. Credentials can be mailed if time allows. Otherwise, they may be picked up at the Will Call window at Trask Coliseum. Seating arrangements are determined by the SID. Requests are accepted from working members of the media only.
Press Row Seating
The press seating area at Trask Coliseum is located on the north end of the arena, directly opposite the official scorer’s table. All seats are designated prior to tip-off and are allotted to working media, radio personnel, scouts and university personnel as space permits. Children and other non‑workers are prohibited on press row.
Trask Coliseum Press Room
UNCW’s press room, located in the east hallway of Trask Coliseum, opens one hour prior to tip-off. Pre‑game information and materials on both teams, as well as refreshments, are available before tipoff. Game programs, cumulative statistics, starting lineups and game notes will be available prior to the start of each game. Only authorized game and media personnel are allowed in the press room.
Practice Interviews
Nearly all UNCW practices are open to the media. Interviews may be conducted before or after practice on the main floor. The recommended time slot for interviews is before practice. To confirm interviews, contact Joe Browning prior to arrival. During practice, members of the media are asked to clear the playing floor and observe practice from the upper arena. No interviews will be given on game day by the players or coaches, with the exception of the pre‑game radio show.

Press Parking
Limited parking is available for media covering the Seahawks. Parking passes are available for reserved spaces adjacent to Trask Coliseum. Requests for parking passes should be made in advance when reserving credentials.
Post-Game Press Conferences
Both coaches and selected players are available in the press room following the game. The visiting coach appears first in the press room within 10 minutes after completion of the game. UNCW Head Coach Benny Moss will then proceed to the media room. Requests for individual player interviews, other than those conducted in the media room, should be made through the respective SID.
Following a season rife with crippling injuries and other obstacles, Coach Benny Moss and the Seahawks are looking forward to what 2009-10 brings, including a full complement of players to tackle the rigors of NCAA Division I play. UNCW suited up an undermanned, undersized team for much of 2008-09, and the 7-25 overall record and 3-16 Colonial Athletic Association ledger defined a difficult season. But Seahawk faithful should be back in good spirits in 2009-10 since Moss has restocked the team for another run at the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Seahawks approach an ambitious schedule with five seniors, six juniors, one sophomore and three freshmen. UNCW returns its top three scorers and leading assist maker for the new campaign, including senior guard Johnny Wolf and junior stalwarts Chad Tomko and Dominque Lacy. Wolf joined the program last season after transferring from Xavier and provided an instant boost. He started 29 games and averaged 13.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists in his first year, scoring 20 or more points five times. Tomko enters his third season as UNCW’s starting playmaker. The Charlotte product led the club in scoring (15.6 ppg) and assists (4.6) Dominique en route to Third-Team All-CAA honors. In two seasons, the 5-foot-11, 165-pound dynamo has started 64-of-65 games and drained 126 triples. Lacy, meanwhile, also is primed for a big year. The 6-foot-7 jumping jack ranked third in scoring (10.4 ppg) and first in rebounding (5.9 rpg) with 16 double figure outings one year ago. He recorded four double-doubles in his second year on the squad. Joining Wolf and Tomko in a versatile backcourt will be seniors Darion Jeralds and Josh Sheets, and juniors Darryl Felder and Ahmad Grant. Jeralds, Sheets and Felder have combined to play in 241 games with 53 starts for the Seahawks, while Grant, a transfer from Olney Central Junior College, poured in 1,084 points in two seasons for the Knights. Unlike last year, Moss has plenty of options in the frontcourt, with size, versatility and athleticism back in the stable. Several players will compete for playing time as the Seahawks revitalize their inside game. Senior swing man Montez Downey returns for his final season in a Seahawk uniform. Downey has opened 26-of-72 games in three seasons and collected 8.5 points and 2.7 boards last year. Three transfers - John Fields, Jeremy Basnight and Trevor Deloach - should compete for playing time with redshirt freshman Will Ohuaregbe up front. Fields played two seasons at East Carolina and brings a shot blocking presence to the team. The 6-9, 230-pounder averaged 9.6 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Pirates in 2007-08, and led Conference USA in blocks during his freshman and sophomore seasons. Basnight and Deloach transfer in from Brunswick Community College and Chipola Junior College, respectively. Basnight averaged 11.0 points and 3.0 rebounds last season and Deloach appeared in 22 games for JUCO powerhouse Chipola. Ohuaregbe, classified as a freshman, could have the most impact of the newcomers. The 6-8 power forward suffered a knee injury early last season and spent most of the year learning the system from the sideline. The London native is back to full speed and should see extended playing time. Rising senior Daniel Mercer was the club’s most improved player last year after making the team as a walk-on and contributing down the stretch. Two freshman recruits, Keith Rendleman and Matt Wilson, will also battle for playing time. Rendleman is a raw talent who was the Chad Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference Player-of-the-Year as a junior and senior, while Wilson averaged 12.0 points and 8.0 rebounds at Ravenscroft High School, earning All-Conference honors twice.

Head Coach Benny Moss Benny Moss enters his fourth season at the helm of the UNCW men’s basketball program with high expectations. After orchestrating one of the nation’s best turnarounds in 2007-08, Moss faced numerous injuries and obstacles in his third season on the bench. When it was over, the Seahawks wound up with a 7-25 overall ledger and a 3-15 mark in the CAA. In three seasons with the Seahawks, Moss has fashioned a 34-60 (.362) overall record and a 20-38 (.345) conference scorecard. After enduring a 7-22 debut in 2006-07, UNCW bounced back with a 20-13 record and second-place finish in the CAA in 2007-08. Moss finished second in the league’s Coach-of-the-Year balloting after piloting the Seahawks to their fifth 20-win season. The loss of several key players, however, stalled the rebuilding process in 2008-09, leaving Moss and his staff scrambling. Before being named the seventh head coach in UNCW history on April 20, 2006, the veteran coach assisted with programs at four different institutions. Moss, 39, joined the Seahawks after serving six seasons as the top aide for Bobby Lutz at UNC Charlotte, where the 49ers compiled a 114-69 record during his stay. Following a playing career at Pfeiffer and UNC Charlotte, Moss broke into the coaching profession at Pfeiffer in Misenheimer, N.C., and made stops at Phillips University in Enid, Okla., and Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark., before landing in the Queen City. Overall, he served 13 years as an assistant coach and helped four programs compile a 287-121 (.703) record. In his six years with the 49ers, UNCC won two league titles, posted three 20-win seasons and advanced to four NCAA Tournaments. The 49ers went 19-13 in 2005-06 and collected a post-season berth in the National Invitation Tournament. A 1992 graduate of UNCC, Moss lettered two years for the 49ers in 1990 and 1991 before transferring to Pfeiffer, where he played and later coached under Lutz. He was named to the 1990 Sun Belt Conference All-Freshman Team at UNCC, earned Academic All-American honors and was voted to the 1993 Carolinas Conference All-Tournament Team at Pfeiffer. Moss served as an assistant coach at Pfeiffer for three seasons as the Falcons went 71-22. Pfeiffer won a pair of conference titles, advanced to two NAIA National Tournaments and was national runner-up in 1995. In his final year with the Falcons in 1996, Pfeiffer moved to NCAA Division II, went 21-8 and appeared in the Top 25 poll. Moss then spent two years on the staff of Rand Chappell at Phillips and joined Chappell for two seasons at Henderson State. Phillips amassed a 55-12 record, and Henderson State carved out a 47-18 mark with Moss on the bench. Moss earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from UNCC in 1992 and completed his M.B.A. at Pfeiffer in 1994. He and his wife, Dee Dee, have a son, Duane (11), and a daughter, Courtney (7).

Justin Furr, one of the nation’s brightest young assistant coaches, enters his fourth season on Coach Benny Moss’ staff. Furr, 31, coached two seasons at High Point for Coach Bart Lundy before coming to UNCW. He previously served stints at St. Andrews, Wingate and Pfeiffer. A native of Stanfield, N.C., Furr played four seasons at Wingate, where he earned the Coach’s Award and served as team captain. He helped Wingate land an NCAA Division II Tournament berth his senior season. Furr began his coaching career at Pfeiffer and spent two years as an assistant for Dave Davis in Misenheimer, N.C. He helped the Falcons become the first team in Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) history to go undefeated with a perfect 18-0 mark. He then moved on to his alma mater and coached two years with Parker Laketa at Wingate. During his time, the Bulldogs made an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 2002 and shared the South Atlantic Conference regular season title in 2003. Furr served as associate head coach at St. Andrews under Rob Parron for one season in 2003-04 before making the move to High Point in 2004-05. Furr graduated from West Stanly High School in 1995 and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management from Wingate in 1999.

Assistant Coach Brooks Lee Brooks Lee, who grew up around roundball as a coach’s son before playing collegiate hoops and moving up to the coaching ranks, begins his third season on the men’s basketball staff at UNC Wilmington. Lee, 29, moved to the Port City following two seasons at UNC Greensboro. He was promoted to the second assistant’s slot at UNCG and served as recruiting coordinator for the Spartans. UNCW is Lee’s fourth stop in collegiate basketball, and he’s quickly building an impressive pedigree. He began his career as an assistant for Mike Young at Wofford in 2002-03 and was the Director of Basketball Operations at East Carolina in 2004-05 before moving to the Gate City. As a player, Lee began his collegiate career at High Point before transferring to Campbell to play for his father, Billy. The younger Lee played his final two years in Buies Creek, starting all 53 games and averaging 9.7 points and 4.3 assists. In only two seasons, he wound up sixth on Campbell’s career assist list with 254 helpers and ranks seventh all-time in 3-point field goal percentage with a 39.3 percent clip. Lee earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management in 2002 from Campbell and completed his Master’s Degree in Exercise Science at CU in 2003.

David Jandrew begins his second season as UNC Wilmington’s Director of Men’s Basketball Operations and assists the coaching staff with scheduling, travel and many of the day-to-day activities in the Seahawk basketball program. Jandrew, 35, joined the UNCW staff after serving two years as an assistant coach at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Va. He also worked previously at UNC Charlotte, where UNCW Head Coach Benny Moss played and coached prior to taking over the Seahawk program in 2006-07. Jandrew taught and coached at three North Carolina high schools (Newton-Conover, Newton, N.C.; Fred T. Foard High School, Newton, N.C.; Vance High School, Charlotte, N.C.) before moving to the collegiate ranks. He worked as Western Carolina’s Director of Basketball Operations during the 2002-03 season before returning to his alma mater as UNCC’s video coordinator and athletic academic advisor for three seasons from 2004-06. The Hickory, N.C., native earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Secondary Education from UNCC in 1996 and completed his Master of Science Degree in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University in 1998. Pat Murphy enters his third year as UNCW’s head strength and conditioning coach after serving as the program’s assistant strength and conditioning coach for three seasons. A certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Murphy works with all 19 varsity intercollegiate programs and has played a key part in the development of eight NSCA Strength and Conditioning All-Americans since 2005. Murphy, a native of Goldsboro, N.C., was a member of the baseball program from 2000-04, helping the Seahawks make their first NCAA Regional appearance in 2003 and capture the school’s first Colonial Athletic Association baseball crown in 2004. Murphy earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing at UNCW in 2004.
Carol Stevens enters her 10th year as an administrative assistant in the men’s basketball office. Stevens handles all secretarial duties for the coaching staff. She answers and directs all telephone calls, works with all areas of correspondence, assists with camp operations and helps with recruiting endeavors, campus visits and team travel. A native of Madison, Conn., Stevens joined the UNCW athletic department in 1997, following two years as Coordinator of the Defensive Driving Program at Cape Fear Community College. Stevens’ husband, John, is a registered nurse. He is a nursing instructor at Cape Fear Community College and also teaches anatomy and physiology at CFCC. Their son, Rob, is a 2007 graduate of Queens University in Charlotte and is an Account Executive in Commerical Surety for the Travelers Insurance Company.
A veteran of 27 years in collegiate athletics, Joe Browning oversees all of UNCW’s athletic communications efforts. The native Kansan joined the department in August of 1986 and manages UNCW’s athlteic media relations, publications, statistics and photography components, as well as its radio, television and internet properties. Browning founded the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame and served as the first president of the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. He also has received awards from the Virginia and Idaho Press Associations and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for his work. A senior member of the department, Browning serves as the sports supervisor for the men’s soccer and women’s soccer programs, and also manages the program’s Strength & Conditioning area. In the summer of 2009, he became only the fifth North Carolinian in the 63-year history of CoSIDA to serve on the organization's National Board of Directors.

UNCW’s Coaches Through The Years Bill Brooks 21 Seasons/1952-72 Record: 256-228
Brooks originated the UNC Wilmington basketball program in 1951-52 at Wilmington College. He directed UNCW to a 12-4 record in its first campaign in 1951-52, and enjoyed four straight 20-win seasons in the late 50’s and early 60’s. Brooks took the Seahawks to six straight conference championships and two appearances in the National JUCO Tournament.
Mel Gibson 14 Seasons/1973-86 Record: 194-180
Gibson, a former player for the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers, carried the Seahawks into the NCAA Division I era. Gibson’s first four Division I teams compiled a record of 73-35, including three consecutive 19win seasons from 1978-80. He recruited all-time leading rebounder Brian Rowsom for the Seahawk program and was named to UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame.
Robert McPherson 4 Seasons/1987-90 Record: 57-60
UNCW’s third cage mentor came from Sam Houston State University and piloted the Seahawks to a pair of championship games in the CAA Tournament. McPherson’s first team lost to Navy and David Robinson, 53-50, in the title clash and his third club in 1988-89 dropped a 78-72 overtime count to George Mason in the championship game.
Kevin Eastman 4 Seasons/1991-94 Record: 59-53
A former college basketball standout, Eastman took over in 199091 and immediately steered it in the right direction. After a pair of fifth place finishes in 1990-91 and 1991-92, the Seahawks won 17 games and finished third in the CAA in 1992-93. In Eastman’s final season in 1993-94, UNCW won two tournament titles, finishing with an 18-10 record.
Jerry Wainwright 8 Seasons/1995-2002 Record: 136-103
In eight seasons with the program, Jerry Wainwright compiled a legacy of success that included four post-season berths, a pair of CAA titles and the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory. Wainwright piloted UNCW to NCAA berths in 2000 and 2002 and NIT appearances in 1998 and 2001. He was named CAA Coach-of-the-Year in both 1998 and 2001. In Wainwright’s final year with the program in 2001-02, the Seahawks captured their second CAA crown, upset fourth-seeded Southern Cal in the NCAA Tournament and collected a then-school record 23 victories.
Brad Brownell 4 Seasons/2003-06 Record: 83-40
After an eight-year stint as an assistant coach on Jerry Wainwright’s staff, Brad Brownell took over the helm of the program in 2002-03, and it didn’t skip a beat. He piloted the Seahawks to a 24-7 record in his first season and added 19 wins in 2004-05 and a 25-8 campaign in 2005-06. Along the way, he led the Seahawks to a pair of CAA titles, two NCAA Tournament berths and was named CAA Coachof-the-Year in 2003 and 2006.

Seahawk Trio Honored On CAA's Silver Anniversary All-time greats Brian Rowsom, Brett Blizzard and John Goldsberry have been selected to the Colonial Athletic Association’s Silver Anniversary Team as part of the league’s 25th anniversary celebration. Rowsom, a versatile power forward from Columbia, N.C., was the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder for 15 years and enjoyed several historic battles with Navy star David Robinson. Rowsom was a three-time All-CAA selection, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors in 1987. The crafty Blizzard, who hailed from Tallahassee, Fla., powered the Seahawks to three NCAA Tournament appearances and an NIT berth during his ultra-successful career from 2000-03. He is the only player in the history of the CAA to earn First-Team honors four consecutive years and was selected the circuit’s Player-ofthe-Year in 2002 and 2003. He is also the only player to collect CAA Tournament MVP honors three times and closed out his career with a school-best 2,144 points and remains the CAA’s career 3-point leader with 371 treys. Goldsberry was a two-time AllCAA selection who earned Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors in 2004-05. Hoops History Dec. 3, 1951: In his first game as head coach of Wilmington Junior College, Bill Brooks leads the Seahawks to 47-42 victory over Atlantic Christian College junior varsity. Mar. 20-24, 1962: The Seahawks, Region 10 champions, earn their first bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament, completing the regular season with their fourth straight 20-win year under Bill Brooks at 21-6. Mar. 19-23, 1963: Bill Brooks leads the Seahawks to a sixth place finish in the NCJAA Tournament after winning his sixth consecutive and final conference championship. Gene Bogash is named to the All-Tournament team for the second straight year and is also voted the event’s top player. The Seahawks join the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) at the conclusion of the season. Dec. 3, 1963: Now a four-year school, Wilmington College plays its first NAIA game, an 83-63 loss to Valdosta State. Dec. 12, 1963: Wilmington College posts its first NAIA victory over Methodist, 100-52. Dec. 1, 1969: The Seahawks, now part of the University of North Carolina system, play their first game as UNC Wilmington and fall short in a 77-90 loss to Guilford College.
Bill Brooks started UNCW’s program and piloted the Seahawks to six straight conference titles and two appearances in the National JUCO Tournament.
Feb. 26, 1972: Bill Brooks coaches his final basketball game for UNCW and directs the Seahawks to an 82-67 victory over Appalachian State. After 21 years, Brooks compiles a record of 258-229 (.529) on the hardwood.
Nov. 29, 1976: UNC Wilmington drops an 80-67 decision to East Tennessee State in its NCAA Division I debut.
Nov. 25, 1972: Mel Gibson, a former assistant under Brooks, directs UNCW to a 74-66 win over Hampton in his first game as head coach of the Seahawks.
Dec. 4, 1976: The Seahawks earn their first victory since moving to Division I status, a 110-89 romp over Baptist College. Dec. 29, 1976: Bill Martin pumps in 18 points as the Seahawks claim their first victory over an NCAA Divison I school with a 67-65 triumph at Maine. Nov. 26, 1977: In the premier game at Trask Coliseum, the Seahawks drop a 83-79 decision to nationally-ranked Wake Forest. The game also marks the first televised game in UNCW history when the game is aired locally on WECT- TV 6. Dec. 7, 1977: UNC Wilmington earns its first victory in Trask Coliseum, an 82-63 win over Campbell. Sept. 1, 1984: UNC Wilmington and American join six members of the ECAC South to form the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). June 6, 1985: The formation of the Colonial Athletic Association is officially announced at a press conference, with each of the eight charter members signing a proclamation establishing the new league. Jan. 4, 1986: The Seahawks lose to Navy, 76-61, in their first CAA regular season contest. Jan. 11, 1986: UNCW registers its first CAA triumph, a 73-56 victory over William and Mary. Mar. 3, 1986: Mel Gibson coaches his final game for the Seahawks, a 62-60 loss to Navy in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament. Gibson resigns to become Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities. April 14, 1986: Robert McPherson is named head basketball coach by Chancellor William H. Wagoner. McPherson comes to UNCW from Sam Houston State University. Nov. 29, 1986: In his first game as head coach, Robert McPherson guides the Seahawks to a 61-47 victory over Army at Trask Coliseum.
Marshall Hamilton, above, was a force for the Seahawks in their early days. At 6-6, the Washington, D.C., product wrapped up his career in 1965-66 and went on to compile an outstanding career as a high school coach and administrator.
Dec. 12, 1986: Brian Rowsom scores 35 points in a 73-72 loss to Indiana in a first-round game of the Indiana Classic in Bloomington, Ind. Rowsom scores 36 points the following night in an 86-85 loss to Southern Illinois and becomes the first and only non-Indiana player to be named Most Valuable Player of the Indiana Classic. Dec. 13, 1986: UNCW loses to Southern Illinois, 86-85, before 14,125 fans in the consolation game of the Indiana Classic.

Feb. 19, 1990: Robert McPherson resigns as the third coach in UNCW basketball history, citing a desire to pursue other interests. A national search begins immediately to find a replacement.
Jan. 17, 1987: Brian Rowson sets a school record for single game scoring with 39 points in an 85-70 victory over East Carolina.
April 18, 1990: University of Tulsa assistant coach Kevin Eastman is introduced as head coach of the Seahawk basketball program at a news conference in the Golden Hawk Room of the William P. Nixon, Jr., Athletic Annex.
Mar. 2, 1987: In an exciting end to his first season as head coach, Robert McPherson leads the Seahawks to the CAA Tournament championship game, a 53-50 loss to Navy. The game marks the 110th and final start for Brian Rowsom, an all-time UNCW record. June 22, 1987: Brian Rowsom is drafted by the Indiana Pacers as the 11th pick in the 2nd round (34th overall) during the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft. He is the fourth UNCW player, along with Jay Neary (1966), Denny Fields (1978) and Danny Davis (1981), to be drafted. Nov. 2, 1988: Brian Rowsom returns home to the Tar Heel State after signing with the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA. He is a member of the first team for the new expansion franchise in the NBA. Dec. 17, 1988: The Seahawks post their 100th victory in Trask Coliseum by claiming a 73-61 win over Campbell. Mar. 6, 1989: For the second time in three years, the Seahawks reach the championship game of the CAA Tournament before succumbing in a 78-72 overtime loss to George Mason at the Hampton Coliseum. Greg Bender plays in his 118th and final game, an all-time UNCW record. Oct. 20, 1989: The first professional basketball game is played in Trask Coliseum between the Charlotte Hornets and New Jersey Nets. The Nets defeat the Hornets, 98-86, in the exhibition game before 5,546 fans. Dec. 30, 1989: Led by the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Brannon Lan caster, the Seahawks nip Texas-Arlington in overtime, 66-64, to capture the championship of the Medical Value Plan Holiday Classic at the University of Toledo’s Savage Hall.
April 27, 1990: Kevin Eastman tabs Jeff Reynolds, an assistant coach at Winthrop College, as the first aide on his newly formed staff. May 26, 1990: Senior guard Brannon Lancaster travels to Yugoslavia as part of a tour featuring players from the CAA. Athletic Director Bill Brooks serves as head of the delegation. May 29, 1990: Kevin Eastman selects the second assistant coach, Frank Haith, for his new staff. Haith comes to UNCW after a stint at Wake Forest. Aug. 1, 1990: The new coaching staff is completed with the hiring of Byron Samuels, who comes to Wilmington with Kevin Eastman from Tulsa. Feb. 16, 1991: UNC Wilmington entertains conference rival Richmond in the 1,000th game in the school’s history. Chancellor James R. Leutze presents the game ball to Athletic Director William J. Brooks to commemorate the occasion. Mar. 2, 1991: The curtain on Kevin Eastman’s inaugural season closes with an 8773 loss to George Mason in the CAA Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. April 26, 1991: Part-time assistant coach Byron Samuels accepts a full-time post under new head coach Ron Bradley at Radford University. Aug. 19, 1991: Jeff Maher, a graduate assistant coach for three seasons at Duquense, fills the slot vacated by Byron Samuels. Dec. 30, 1991: Sherif El-Sanadily, a power forward from Cairo, Egypt, becomes the first foreign player to see action for the Seahawks when he scores two points and grabs four rebounds in an 87-70 verdict over Queens. Jan. 20, 1992: Senior center Matt Fish sets a new single game rebounding record with 20 boards in a 98-97 triple overtime loss at American. Mar. 6, 1992: Matt Fish becomes UNCW’s fourth first-team All-Conference selection when the Colonial Athletic Association honors its players at the CAA Tournament banquet. Apr. 8-11, 1992: Matt Fish is invited to compete in the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational Basketball Tournament for collegiate seniors. Apr. 21, 1992: The Philadelphia Spirit of the United States Basketball League selects Matt Fish as its No. 1 pick in the spring draft. Fish is the last pick of the first round in the summer league’s draft. Lakers, scoring 10 points. Mar. 27, 1996: The Denver Nuggetts, after earlier signing Matt Fish to a pair of 10-day contacts, ink the former Seahawk cager for the remainder of the season. Mar. 4, 1996: The Seahawks lead at the half before falling to heavily favored Virginia Commonwealth, 46-43, in the championship game of the CAA Tournament in Richmond, Va. Dec. 28, 1996: The Seahawks rally from eight points down at halftime to capture the championship of the Bow Tie Classic with a 71-64 decision over host Mount St. Mary’s. Feb. 28, 1997: UNCW reaps a host of honors at the CAA’s post-season banquet. Mar. 9, 1998: UNCW collects its first post-season berth when National Invitation Tournament (NIT) officials inform the Seahawks of their inclusion in the 32-team field. Mar. 12, 1998: In a tightly contested game, Wake Forest slides by UNCW, 56-52, in a first-round game of the NIT at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Coach Mel Gibson was inducted into the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006 after coaching the Seahawks for 14 seasons from 1973-86 and elevating the program into the NCAA Division I ranks. He was also named to the CAA Legends list at the 2008 CAA Tournament. Dec. 19, 1992: Led by tournament most valuable player Tim Shaw, UNCW captures the title of the first USAir East Coast Basketball Classic with a 91-80 upset of Auburn at Trask Coliseum. Shaw scores 33 points and grabs seven rebounds to spark the Seahawks. Mar. 6, 1993: Reggie Veney pumps in 24 points as the Seahawks defeat Richmond, 71-58, in a first-round game of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at the Richmond Coliseum. It is Dick Tarrant’s final game with the Spiders after a stellar career at Richmond. Dec. 4, 1993: Paced by tournament most valuable player Corey Stewart, the Seahawks capture the championship of the Golden Panther Invitational with a 46-44 victory over host Florida International in Miami, Fla. Dec. 18, 1993: Chris Meighen pours in 18 points as the Seahawks claim the title of the USAir East Coast Classic with a 70-62 verdict over Metro Conference member South Florida. Mar. 5, 1994: In one of the best games in tournament history, the Seahawks outlast George Mason, 100-97, in three overtimes at the Richmond Coliseum. Darren Moore’s 22 points and 16 rebounds lead the way for UNCW. May 8, 1994: Kevin Eastman resigns as head coach to accept the top position at Pac-10 Conference member Washington State. June 6, 1994: Jerry Wainwright, an assistant coach for nine seasons at Wake Forest, is named to direct the Seahawks. He becomes the fifth coach in the history of the program. Nov. 2, 1994: Former Seahawk standout Matt Fish makes his debut in the NBA as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers. He plays 26 games for the Clippers, averaging 4.7 ppg and 3.2 rpg. Dec. 3, 1994: Led by Preston McGriff’s 25 points and 12 rebounds, UNCW blows past Murray State, 81-73, to collect its third consecutive USAir East Coast Basketball Classic. Mar. 3, 1995: Senior guard Ganon Baker receives the inaugural Dean Ehlers Leadership Award at the CAA’s post-season banquet, recognizing the popular player for his academic success and leadership qualities.
Feb. 25, 1999: Seniors Stan Simmons and Billy Donlon are honored at the season-ending CAA Basketball Banquet with honors. Simmons is selected first-team All-CAA, while Donlon is presented the prestigious Dean Ehlers Leadership Award. Mar. 3, 2000: Newcomer Brett Blizzard of Tallahassee, Fla, becomes UNCW’s first CAA Rookie-of-the-Year and the first freshman in the history of the league to earn first-team All-Conference honors at the league’s post-season banquet. Mar. 6, 2000: With a national television audience witnessing on ESPN2, the Seahawks make a furious comeback in the second half to whip Richmond, 57-47, in the championship game of the CAA Tournament, setting off a wild celebration on the floor of the Richmond Coliseum. Mar. 17, 2000: The Seahawks make their first NCAA Tournament appearance in the South Regional, losing to highly-ranked Cincinnati, 64-47, at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tenn. May 3, 2000: Freshman Brett Blizzard is named the recipient of the Edward S. Steitz Award as the nation’s top 3-point shooter by the Basketball Hall of Fame. Dec. 16, 2000: Barron Thelmon’s 3-pointer in the waning seconds lifted the Seahawks to a 53-48 victory over Butler, snapping an 18-game winning streak at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse for the Bulldogs. Mar. 4, 2002: The Seahawks complete a dominating run in the CAA Tournament by whipping Virginia Commonwealth, 66-51, in the CAA Championship Game at the Richmond Coliseum. Mar. 14, 2002: UNCW stuns No. 4 seeded Southern California, 93-89, in overtime in a first-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament at Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif. The 13th-seeded Seahawks pull off the biggest upset of the opening round. Mar. 16, 2002: National finalist Indiana ends UNCW’s Cinderella Run with a 76-67 verdict over the Seahawks in an NCAA Second Round pairing at Arco Arena. Apr. 24, 2002: Associate Head Coach Brad Brownell is named to direct the program following the resignation of eight-year skipper Jerry Wainwright. Mar. 7, 2003: Brad Brownell is named CAA Coach-of-the-Year and Brett Blizzard is selected CAA Player-of-the-Year at the league’s post-season banquet in Richmond, Va. Mar. 10, 2003: The Seahawks put the finishing touches on a dominating season in the league by downing Drexel, 72-60, in the championship game of the CAA Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. UNCW closes out the year with an 18-3 record in the CAA, winning its last nine games against conference foes. Mar. 21, 2003: Defending national champion Maryland overcomes a record-setiting performance by UNCW freshman John Goldsberry to edge the Seahawks, 73-75, in a first-round game of the NCAA Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. Goldsberry hits all eight of his 3-point field goal attempts, but Drew Nicholas drains a desperation trey at the buzzer to help the Terps escape UNCW’s upset bid. Mar. 4, 2005: Junior John Goldsberry becomes the first player in UNCW history to be named CAA Defensive Player-of-the-Year. The Vandalia, Ohio, guard is also named First-Team All-CAA and is recognized on the All-Defensive and AllAcademic Teams. Nov. 15, 2006: Led by Tournament MVP John Goldsberry, UNCW wins the Black Coaches Association Invitational championship with a 56-48 victory over Northwestern at Wyoming’s Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo. Mar. 2, 2006: Senior playmaker John Goldsberry is named UNCW’s fourth recipient of the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award at the CAA post-season awards banquet. Goldsberry is also named Second-Team All-CAA and selected to the All-Defensive and All-Academic teams. In addition, Brad Brownell is selected CAA Coach-ofthe-Year for the second time in four seasons at the helm.

Mar. 6, 2006: Top-seeded UNCW trims Hofstra, 77-68, for its fourth CAA title at the Richmond Coliseum behind T.J. Carter’s 23 points. Carter is named CAA Tourney MVP after pouring in 12 of his game-high total in the final 2:51 to key UNCW’s win over the Pride. Mar. 16, 2006: George Washington rallies late to turn back UNCW’s upset bid with an 88-85 victory over the Seahawks in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament’s Atlanta Regional at the Greensboro Coliseum. The No. 8 seeded Colonials overcome an 18-point second half deficit to stun the No. 9 Seahawks before 22,642 fans. Trask Coliseum Facts Name: Trask Coliseum is named for the late Raiford G. Trask, Sr., a prominent businessman and primary benefactor of the university. Date Opened: Nov. 26, 1977 (Wake Forest 83, UNCW 79). Largest Crowd: There have been 41 sellouts in the history of the arena, including a record 10 sellouts in 2003-04 Surface: A new maple surface was installed in September of 2001, replacing the original floor. Events: Trask Coliseum also serves as the host site for women’s basketball games, concerts, conventions, lectures and graduation ceremonies.
The Raiford G. Trask Coliseum ranks as one of the most beautiful on-campus basketball arenas in the nation. The popular facility seats 6,100 fans for basketball events, with the capacity evenly divided between permanent theater-type seating above the playing floor and bleacher seating on the ground level. The arena was officially dedicated on Nov. 26, 1977, when the Seahawks entertained nationally-ranked Wake Forest before a sellout crowd. It was also the site of UNCW’s first CAA victory on Jan. 5, 1985, when the Seahawks trimmed George Mason, 66-64. Overall, the Seahawks have enjoyed a favorable home court advantage at Trask. The men’s team has won 71.5 percent of its games in the arena, compiling a 286-114 record in 32 seasons, including 29 winning seasons and 41 sellouts. The 1997-98 team posted the only undefeated home season in the program’s history when it sailed through with an unblemished 9-0 record. The main building of the complex contains four general classrooms, a physical measurements laboratory, a computer lab, five racquetball courts and faculty and administrative offices. The complex also includes the Seahawk Natatorium, a spacious eight-lane, 25X20-yard pool, and the William P. Nixon, Jr., Athletic Annex. The annex, a 4,000-square foot building located adjacent to the coliseum on the south side, houses the main offices for the athletic department, along with the Seahawk Club’s Golden Hawk Room. Eight CAA titles have been decided at the facility. The 1986 women’s basketball championship was staged at UNCW, along with the 1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1995 Swimming and Diving Championships and the 1996 Volleyball Championship. Numerous concert and stage performers also have appeared in the facility, including Bill Cosby, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, The Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Charlie Daniels, Paul Anka, Dionne Warwick, Barbara Mandrell, The Righteous Brothers, The Beach Boys, The Four Tops, Willie Nelson, Gladys Knight, Rich Little, Destiny’s Child, Jessica Simpson, David Cook and Kellie Pickler. The arena was also the site of a Fed Cup tennis semifinal match between the United States and France. Several of the world’s top-ranked women’s professional players convened on Wilmington for the event that was televised on ESPN2.

UNCW’s student-athletes are in good hands with the Seahawk Sports Medicine team of Scott Hill, Stephanie Leimbach, Stacy Downar, Julie Francis, Aldo Plata and Margery Ellis. The Almkuist-Nixon Sports Medicine Complex and George Diab Sports Medicine Center provide outstanding care for UNCW’s 350 student-athletes. The two facilities are designed to keep the Seahawks in top physical condition. Included in the impressive Almkuist-Nixon complex is an athletic training room, examination room, technology-equipped classroom, coaching offices, and locker rooms for men’s soccer, women’s soccer and softball. The 2,600-square foot training room is equipped with the latest electrical modalities and equipment. The hydrotherapy room has two plunge pools (hot and cold) as well a therapy pool with a treadmill built into the bottom (Hydroworx 500 series pool). Also available is a full line of Life Fitness cardio equipment, including a stair master, lifecycle, treadmill, and elliptical machine, a Life Fitness Dual Adjustable Pulley machine and Magnum Fitness Combo Leg Extension/ Curl and Multi-Hip machines. UNCW’s student-athletes also benefit from the 1,732-square foot George Diab Sports Medicine Center, a training facility that was opened in 1993 and named for longtime benefactors George and Kitty Diab. Radio/TV Coverage The increasing popularity of UNCW’s men’s basketball program can be seen in the expansion of its television, radio and internet properties via the Sehawk Sports Network. Several Seahawk basketball games will be aired on ESPN's family of networks, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) and Comcast SportsNet throughout the 200910 campaign. Fans also may tune in to “The Benny Moss Show,” a 30-minute weekly production of WWAY-TV 3 that includes weekly highlights, player interviews, insights and other special features. Radio coverage of Seahawk hoops begins 30 minutes prior to tip-off, with the pre-game show featuring Head Coach Benny Moss. A 30-minute post-game show wraps up the game and provides an inside look at the matchup and future opponents. Handling play-by-play duties will be Vaccaro, who begins his sixth season with the program after working as Campbell University’s Director of Broadcasting for six years. He will be joined on press row by Joseph Cardile, a Long Island native who begins his 21st year in the broadcasting business.
Television Partners Combine To Help Seahawks Increase National Exposure UNCW’s regional and national television coverage will be complemented once again by the Seahawk TV Network, which begins its eighth year of operation in 2009-10. The Seahawks signed a multi-year agreement with the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) two years ago to televise numerous games this season. The pact will ensure UNCW's basketball team gains maximum exposure in the region and nation, placing the Seahawks in a front of a live television audience several times this season. Veteran broadcasters Patrick Johnson and Billy Lee will work the telecasts for UNCW's MASN package in 200910.

Colonial Athletic Association The Colonial Athletic Association celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2009-10 with memories of a proud and storied past and visions of an exciting future. Regarded as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences, the CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television Tom Yeager CAA Commissioner homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in 2007 and women’s rowing in 2009. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Historic Wilmington affords visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy a bustling seaport rich in shopping, dining, culture and the arts, while being only minutes away from barrier islands, broad beaches and the intracoastal waterway. The 200-block Historic District highlighting the downtown area opens into a scenic riverfront park that overlooks the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. A beautifully restored battleship, the USS North Carolina was considered the greatest sea weapon in the world when commissioned in 1941. During World War II, “The Showboat” earned 15 battlestars and participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. A memorial since 1961, the battleship is dedicated to the men and women of all U.S. military services who defended our country during WWII. One of Wilmington’s most unique features is the city’s status as the leading entertainment production center in the Southeast. The city’s evolution into “Hollywood East” began when Dino DeLaurentis shot Stephen King’s “Firestarter” in 1984. One year later, Dino DeLaurentis constructed a studio facility in the Port City and the complex, now owned by EUE/Screen Gems, is the largest production studio east of Hollywood, offering nine sound stages on a 32-acre site near the Wilmington International Airport. Numerous movies, television series and commericals have been filmed in Wilmington. The popular show, “Dawson’s Creek,” was produced in Wilmington and shot frequently on the UNCW campus as well as Warner Bros. hit “One Tree Hill.” A film-friendly community, Wilmington residents have embraced the industry, often appearing as “extras” in movies. It’s not uncommon for celebrities the likes of Sandra Bullock, Nick Nolte, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise and Dennis Hopper to be seen dining at a restaurant, shopping at the mall or just simply walking along the shore. Wrightsville Beach, just minutes away from Wilmington’s downtown area, is a year-round island resort. Wide, uncrowded beaches, full service marinas and a variety of accommodations are complemented by excellent seafood restaurants, specialty shops and exciting nightlife.
