Head Coach

Hans Olsen First Season Charleston Southern, ‘92

Hans Olsen, who has guided tennis programs at three different NCAA Division I institutions to a combined eight NCAA Tournament appearances, was named the 13th head women’s tennis coach in UNCW history on July 8, 2015. Olsen was Interim Head Coach at North Carolina Central in 2014-15 after heading up the programs at N.C. State (2001-14) and Charleston Southern (1996-2001). He steps into the position after John Ware worked as interim head coach last spring. “We’re very excited about Hans joining the Seahawk family,” said Jimmy Bass, UNCW’s athletic director. “He brings extensive NCAA Division I head coaching experience to a program that has tremendous potential. He has excellent teaching credentials and a terrific recruiting network that will be highly beneficial as our program continues to grow and prosper.” Olsen brings a wealth of experience to the coast, with four conference championships, eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 280 match wins under his belt in 19 seasons as a head coach. He boasts the highest winning percentage as a head coach at both N.C. State and CSU. “I am very excited to join the Seahawk family,” said Olsen. “I would like to thank Jimmy Bass and Deputy A.D. Adrienne Swinney for this incredible opportunity. “It’s an honor to be chosen to lead a program that has tremendous potential. The supportive atmosphere, beautiful campus, strong academics and ideal location for tennis development will allow us to achieve a healthy balance of academic success and highly competitive tennis. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to take a competitive program to new heights.” A native of Atlanta, Olsen was a four-year standout at Charleston Southern from 1988-92, earning two-time All-Big South honors as the Buccaneers’ top player. The two-time MVP completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from CSU in 1992. Olsen returned to his alma mater in 1997 as head men’s and women’s tennis coach. He directed CSU’s men to four consecutive Big South Conference championships (1997-2000) and three NCAA Tournament berths (1998-2000). He was selected BSC Coach-of-the-Year four times (1997-2000). Olsen then moved up to Raleigh, where he headed up the women’s tennis program at N.C. State for 13 seasons. During his time with the Wolfpack, the team made five trips to the NCAA Tournament (2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013). The string included the school’s first NCAA Tournament victory, a 4-3 win over No. 24 William & Mary in 2006, and the Wolfpack climbed to as high as No. 25 in the ITA rankings in 2011. Last season, Olsen took over as interim head coach at N.C. Central and led the Eagles to a 9-15 overall record. NCCU finished 3-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and 4-2 in home matches. The Eagles advanced to the MEAC Tournament semifinals by upsetting Howard, the top seed in the North Division, in the quarterfinals.

John Ware 16th Season

Georgia, ‘95

Veteran coach John Ware begins his 16th year of association with the women’s tennis program in 2015-16. Ware, who served as interim head coach during the 2014-15 campaign, arrived in 2000 and has now worked under Jenny Garrity, Evan Clark and Hans Olsen. During Ware’s tenure with the Seahawks, UNCW has placed 50 players on All-Conference squads in the Colonial Athletic Association, including former standouts Lindsey Hess and Christina Lee, who were honored on five different occasions by the CAA’s coaches. With the late-summer departure of Clark to Illinois, Ware headed up the program in 2014-15 and led the Seahawks to a 9-9 finish. Senior Alyssa Ritchie was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Women’s At-Large Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and honored by the CAA as the league’s Women’s Tennis Scholar Athlete-of-theYear for 2014-15. Ritchie was also one of two nominees from the CAA for the NCAA’s prestigious Woman-of-the-Year Award. The Seahawks enjoyed a spectacular season in 2014 that saw the team capture the school’s first conference title and earn the league’s automatic NCAA berth. UNCW compiled a sparkling 17-4 record in 2013-14 and nailed down the No. 1 seed at the CAA Tournament for the first time. The Seahawks defeated Charleston, 4-3, for the school’s first women’s crown. Senior Angie Sekely earned 2014 CAA Player-of-the-Year honors and five Seahawks collected All-CAA recognition. In 2012-13, six different players earned All-CAA honors as the Seahawks went 14-7 and advanced to the championship match of the CAA Tournament for the first time. In 2011-12, the Seahawks reached the semifinals of the CAA championship tournament for the fourth time since Ware’s arrival. UNCW also knocked off 38th-ranked Georgia State early in the season, the program’s top win against a ranked team. The win propelled the Seahawks into the national rankings at 67th, matching the program’s previous high mark set in 2010-11. Alyssa Ritchie became UNCW’s first CAA Rookie-of-the-Year in 2012, when she shared the award with Aleksandra Mitrovska of Old Dominion. Ritchie led the Seahawks with a 17-3 record as a freshman. Ware has extensive playing and coaching experience. He competed collegiately for Valdosta State’s top-20 team from 1989-90 and has served on the staffs at the Athens (Ga.) Country Club and Jennings Mills Country Club. The 44-year-old native of Athens began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach with the Kentucky Wildcats in 1999-00 and was involved with all aspects of the UK program before moving to Wilmington. Ware completed his bachelor’s degree in Finance from Georgia in 1995. He also earned a degree in Liberal Studies from UNCW in 2011.
