The world calls him Melo. He even calls himself Melo. He keeps us going through the day with his music, except for when he randomly plays Jaane Nahin Denge Tujhe from 3 Idiots. That’s Melo.

As a fashion photographer, Roshini Kumar’s main goal is to ditch the filter and with every picture, she unfolds a story that has a personal connection to her. This, in turn, makes every picture super raw and real! Through her pictures her aim is to represent body positivity, the LGBTQ community and to destroy gender roles. She’s hell bent on these ideologies and hence, doesn’t believe in using skin retouch in her pictures. She believes her consumers consume her work because of what it represents and neither does she associate with brands that expect her to be what she isn’t.

Fashion for Randy goes way back in time because she identifies as Trans and clothes were never made for the Trans community. Clothes were always made for a specific gender and that was either male or female. Which she strongly is against and is working towards taking gender away from fashion or rather, letting go of the connotation as a whole. Growing up, fashion was her escape. It let her be whoever she wanted to be and as she grew up pop culture became an inspiration. Fashion in a way was a way to express herself without giving a shit about the norms. Fashion is always changing and evolving and Randy too is always changing and evolving through fashion. As life passes there are so many changes and emotions she’s felt through the years and her approach to fashion and style has also changed depending on her mind space or physical space.

To Hkawnsan, everything in life is about looking good. She’s a makeup artist whose current style is avant-garde and minimalistic. To her, makeup is about bringing a picture to life. The ideal example would be if one day she decided to paint her models face blue and black, she or he wouldn’t necessarily look good based on your everyday beauty standards. As an artist, she has the liberty to create and deliver her art to the world and hence believes her art is a sign of empowerment. Sometimes, through this process of trial and error, she learns something new every day. Due to this her style constantly changes and once they are worn out, she goes out into the world looking for more inspiration.

French Braids + Bright Blue Tights

I grew up in the most happening country in the world, Kuwait. Just kidding it was an absolute snooze fest but, when it came to fashion, it was like the Milan Fashion Week, all day every day. So obviously my fashion sense was at its peak, NOT. I studied in an Indian school and like all Indian schools, mine too was very strict when it came to its uniform. From our pants and shirts perfectly ironed and tucked in to our hair being perfectly braided, the only way one could physically express themselves in school was maybe trying out a French braid instead of a regular braid. The only time I would make an effort with my clothes was when we either went to the beach (always a mess) or to the mall (I am a clumsy eater, so still a mess). But back then, it was 2013, the year of heavy eye makeup and Converse (thank you, Avril Lavigne, for bringing back the trend). Hence, nobody really bothered about what I wore. That changed when I got to Bangalore for my Undergrad. I joined a girls college and I wasn’t particularly excited about it. On my first day of college, I was convinced girls were bitches because I too got sucked into the girls college stereotypes, you know the “Girls are bitchy”, “Girls are always gossiping” and of course the “Girls are judgmental”. On day 1, I decided to keep my outfit simple, a white Kurti along with bright blue tights. I didn’t think much of my outfit because I genuinely put very little effort into it. As I walked in, I felt a couple of eyes on me (not that I am a stunner) and to my surprise I noticed a group of girls scan me from head to toe. I shook that “look” out of my head and proceeded to my class. But it still came back to me eventually because suddenly I looked at my clothes differently. I would wake up at 4 AM for an 8 AM class just to try on different outfits and styles so as to look on point, only to realise that my lifestyle choices started to mess with my sleep cycle and the fact that dark circles aren’t attractive for shit. dayum! | The Lost Thread

I walked into that classroom, palms sweating as my knees were filled with anxiety. Amidst this, I was also conveniently 10 minutes late. My punishment was simple, I walked in to 60 pairs of eyes just completely fixated on one thing; me. They knew nothing about me, I knew nothing about them, so what was I fearing? They didn’t know who I was and I didn’t know who they were but at the time, it seemed like that was enough to decide my fate amongst my peers or should I say, equals. I mean, the furthest they could’ve gone, was either judge me on how I looked (pretty stunning, I must say) or gauge my financial standing (pretty average, I must say), based off the clothes I wore. I was in awe of the people around me and the thoughts they had, the way they spoke and their sense of fashion were things I wanted to have for myself. I did exactly that, in the slightest hope that even I’d be accepted by this bunch of people I just met. My thoughts saw action as there was a significant change in the way I behaved and dressed in particular. Popular slangs to unnecessary habits to uncomfortable tight fit jeans, I did them all. Coming to think about it now, after multiple discussions with friends who went through something similar I’ve come to realize that it was just a cute yet vicious circle. While I wanted to be someone else, that someone was trying to be another and so on.

Chinos + T-Shirt + Slip Ons We were told to count from 1-3 and were split into groups depending on the number we yelled. Immediately, you’d see a reshuffle in the order. We’d do the math just to be able to stick to our so called own. To me that’s what second year of college was all about. Finding your own. It’s a gradual yet eye-opening journey of sorts, isn’t it? Like multiple conversations and situations, you put yourself in with that person and if they finally pass the test, they’ve made it. Again, that could’ve just been me. Acceptance into the group that I was a part of was relatively easier than the rest and that was why I was here, I guess. Like-minded people and all of that. Although, I’d still pick things off these people. I still wasn’t willing to be comfortable enough to be myself around these people. Amongst this bigger circle I found myself in, I sensed multiple commonalities with a smaller set of people. They’d think the way I think, their interest matched mine and so on. I didn’t need to filter my thoughts just because maybe they weren’t ‘cool’.

Zara Pants + High Heels I didn’t have a bad sense of style. I dressed pretty well and I looked good but on most days as Shaggy would say it, it wasn’t me. I would see girls in my college and my friend circle wear them classic “Zara pants” and lord, trust me when I say this but that trend was insane. Being the plus size girl I am, that trend was not my favourite. I would usually dress my body type but there were days (okay, months) I didn’t. I too felt conditioned to wear those pants even though they were so uncomfortable to wear but hey, my butt looked great. Like all college kids, I too started going out a lot more karaoke nights, ladies night, Saturday nights, happy hours, you name it! I gave my attendance everywhere but what they don’t tell you about partying so much is the amount of clothes you require or rather, don’t. I never showed a lot of skin when it came to what I wore as it mostly came from the fact that people with my body type barely flaunted it. My friends on the other hand weren’t curvy girls. So when I saw them put on a short skirt or a crop top, I too felt that the only way I could look good (or sexy) was if I too wore the same. There was no one else close to my body type to take inspiration off. So the skirts got shorter and the heels got higher, only to realise that the constant adjusting of the skirt and bruised feet weren’t worth it.

Sarees + Vans

I slowly started to find myself through my clothes. I started following a lot of fashion bloggers on my Instagram who matched my body type as well. I genuinely started enjoying wearing ethnic clothes (though I have a love/hate relationship with sarees). A fitted kurti with a low back along with a bindi made me feel amazing, empowered if I must. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t ditch the skirts or dresses. Instead, I wore a layer of confidence first and then put on my clothes. I was more aware of my body and what made me feel comfortable around this time. So automatically, whatever I wore made me feel nice and pretty. I realised the only reason I complained about my clothes earlier was cause of the lack of confidence and hence pulling it off was an absolute disaster (in my head). Though I did ditch my heels for a pair of Vans (God bless whatever material they are made out off). There’s so much I can wear in order to express myself and who I am. But the truth is, I could be wearing a watermelon and walking down the streets. Sure, I would get a few (A LOT) of stares but if I wore it with confidence, who do you think would stop me?

Chinos + T-Shirt + slippers The 60 pairs of eyes staring at me when I’d walk in late was amusing to say the least, mostly because I realized that I kind of thrived off the attention I’d get (Yes, I’m an attention seeking human like that). There was a slight difference this time round though as I knew where I sat and I knew who sat around me. My circle was definitely smaller. There was a sense of comfort with the people around me. The cycle had changed, we were all accepting of one another. I’d see someone and be accepting of the differences we shared and be okay with it. They’d do the same with someone else and so on. Just as we stopped the hunt for approval we finally were accepted for the people that we were. That’s what college was to me. It’s all about you learning with everyone else and from everyone else and in the midst of all of this, you kind of become yourself.

future
What do we wanna wear in the future? Over the years, fashion has been an ever existing entity in our lives. The beauty of this term and what it stands for is how one it’s understanding is flexible from one mind to the other. Today, fashion is used to display and discuss characteristics and the issues that lie in the underbelly of our society. While clearly, the both of us have opposing ideologies when it comes to fashion, we believe that everyone should be able to be comfortable in whatever they’re wearing and that on the list of priorities is numero uno.
Shibi Shetty:
Nothing but boxers and a T-shirt if society was more accepting of hairy legs.
Sreelekshmi Prithviraj:
Hopefully she can pull off an animal printed shirt but then again, we know she’ll never be caught dead in that pattern.

Lucky Blue Smith
He was a model who was discovered at a young age and has been around all things fashion. So one would assume finding your own style would be quite hard, but he wasn’t lost in that department. Blessed with his perfect genetics, his style is also a very modern day James Dean. From well tailored suits to dazzled bomber jackets and eye catching prints, Smith has played with it all.
This singer/songwriter’s style was never in the dark (see what we did there?). From head to toe she’s all modern day goth-chic. According to us her signature will always be her dark lipstick. We mean, if she’s slayin’, why question it? Her unconventional style has definitely made heads turn when she entered the industry and since then making statements through her songs and fashion choices have been loud and clear.

Alia Bhatt The 17 year old definitely made people stop what they were doing when he walked in. The current youth culture in the US currently revolves around him ever since he featured in Kanye West’s Adidas collection show. If you think Kanye is the only big name he’s worked for, you’re wrong. Luka is also one among the #DGMillenials starring in the new Dolce and Gabbana Ads. His style is super urban and highend. Also, how can we forget his boyish looks?
From movies to her personal styling, everything she’s got has always been on point. She isn’t afraid to take fashion risks and doesn’t think twice before walking out of the house with a bare face. The young actress has come a long way with her style and has definitely made the red carpet sizzle multiple times. May it be in a saree and high heels or wearing denim on denim with a pair of white sneakers, her style has always been worn with confidence and elegance.

Her music isn’t the only thing to watch out for. With every Instagram picture she drops, our jaws do as well. Her bold sense of style is a game changer when compared to our Bollywood Divas. Her hipster silhouettes and Indie vibes only make us want more and lets not forget the amazing hairstyles she can pull off!
Monica Dogra’s sense of style is what our industry needs right now. She isn’t in the game to play it safe but rather she’s in it to make your jaws drop and heads turn. Lets be honest, when we look at her from head to toe we definetly do wonder why the rest of our industry isn’t as bold as she is. From all the must haves of this season, Monica is definetly rocking the experimental and boho chic look! Her free spirit is portrayed on the outside perfectly.

#my first ramp walk by Niveda Baddula
I woke up one morning with this immediate urge to contemplate which direction I would like to spin my life towards. I told myself that I’d try the first thing that popped into my head and so, in a blink of an eye, I decided to make modelling my personal goal. So, I went for it. I spent 10 days with the renowned Prasad Bidapa Model Management agency, where I picked up my trade. Regardless of the fact that I was pretty confident with my skill sets, the pressure of walking on the ramp for the very first time got to me. The music, the lights, the murmur of the audience made me tremble with fear as i was prepping backstage due to which, the voices in my head started playing. I started doubting myself, thoughts like “maybe if I was taller I’d have had a better chance” rang in the back of my head. But, as I was about to walk out on stage for the very first time, I replayed every single compliment I had ever received. With that confidence, I walked out on stage with my head held high and ever since, I have never even bothered looking back. IG: @nivu14

Artidote Tour We at Under 25 believe that mental health needs far more attention and conversations about it are supremely important. So here’s what we did. Last February, we got Jova Ferreyra, the curator of the renowned Instagram page The Artidote down to India for a 3 city tour, to spread some love, positivity and awareness amongst the youth of our country. After the tour’s incredible success, we brought The Artidote down to India. AGAIN! This time for a 6 city tour across Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi and Jaipur! Our community did not let us down either! With intimate moments across these cities, our community came flocking towards the gates as The Artidote spoke about everything mental health. The response we received across the country was heartwarming to say the least. With people coming, listening and sharing their dealings with mental health, we believe we may have made just a tiny impact in the generation of mental health awareness. For more on what actually went down at the The Artidote Tour 2018, check out our YouTube channel- Under 25. To good health all day erryday, because mental health over every damn thing!
