@antophilip A proud owner of the Google Pixel 3 and a great pair of headphones, he smirks whenever we watch something on our laptops. He’s quite literally a moving home theatre.

@theshreyansjain

He’s dived to the deep end of Netflix and is consuming Spanish shows as we speak! He hasn’t watched Brooklyn 99 yet and that’s something we’re internally investigating.

He usually begs everyone to watch comedy specials. He gets so excited when they finally do, that they stop watching just to avoid conversation with him. He knows this and feels bad.

@siddharth.mohandas Melo is one of the calmest people you know, but try spoiling any show for him. Just try. Oh, if you do, tell us. We’ll keep the popcorn ready.

She hasn’t watched Pulp Fiction, Fight Club or The Godfather. But she’s watched most of Bollywood’s greatest movies, so we haven’t fired her. Yet.

@ iamakbarfaisal Akbar binge watched Sabrina recently and he’s been ‘missing’ at midnight ever since. Coincidence? We think not.

We’re gonna put all of his favourite films in a sentence. Here goes. We wonder if he gets his Coco from the place that’s 3 billboards outside Ebbing Missouri.

@mansimishra1 Mansi specifically told us NOT to talk about her guilty love for Gilmore Girls. Oops.

and producers, but truth is, there are a lot more people behind the camera who make the movie what is is. Meet Saloni Jain, a costume stylist who has worked on movies like OK Jaanu, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Lust Stories and many many more!. You’d assume a stylist’s job is pretty easy considering all they have to do is make the actor look good, NOT. Saloni told us that reading the script is always the first step. From there a team will make pointers on the actor’s characters and create a characterisation through their style. It’s only after this are the DOP and Director approached, with a presentation showing various looks of the characters and after a few meetings, a trial round with hair and makeup is tested on the actor. Now, that’s a long process! But hold up! This is only for the basic idea. Once the idea and feel is approved, the styling team starts researching and sourcing. Moreover, the actor also needs to relate to the character he is playing and styling plays a huge part in that process. COSTUME STYLIST

Growing up around Bollywood movies did not just trigger the love for the movies but also triggered the love for fashion. For Saloni it helped her grow her imagination but never did she think a costume stylist would be on the cards. When it comes to the movie scene, we often talk about the directors, actors

We asked Saloni if she ever has the pressure of getting things wrong, to which her reply was “Pressure is my best friend”. She told us, in this industry you could have a Plan A and a Plan D but things could still go wrong. You might be killing it one minute only to realise you’ve failed another but she works best under pressure. It’s all about the end product. She told us that it’s all worth it when she sees her work on the big screen.

As far as she can remember, the film has always been an integral part of her life and someday she wants to try her hand in direction. She’s inspired by the best in the industry with the likes of D.B Weiss, Irwin Winkler, David Benioff and Ronnie Screwvala making her crave for more! Now, that’s a one helluva’ list. Considering the film industry isn’t easy to get into, Srinidhi told us that understanding the hierarchy and hustling your way up there is the only way to sustain yourself in such a demanding industry. Her tip for success in the film industry is to network and strengthen your chances to get into and stay in the industry. She ran us through the nitty-gritty of film production and started off by making one thing hella clear, “Nothing will happen without production”. Mental note, taken. If you ever are around a film set and see a person running around making sure everything is in place for the shoot, that, my friends are most probably one of the production folks.

PRODUCTION COORDINATOR We might as well say it, Srinidhi is an absolute baller! Currently working as the production coordinator for ‘Dhaka’, the upcoming Netflix project starring Chris Hemsworth, she’s also worked on the much anticipated ‘Brahmastra’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

From the initial stages of the film, producers manage everything from casting, location scouting, permissions for the shoot and makes sure everyone gets their food on time amongst a WHOLE LOTTA other things! Production is all about the hustle I guess. So, correction, Srinidhi is an absolute hustler!

jotting down notes. This was gonna be fun! And so, we started there; comedy. Vishak used to be a constant presence at open mics, comedy shows and improv gigs across Chennai, where he used to study. Oh, the things we’d give to see him do a stand-up routine.

ACTOR It’s weird how Vishak got to where he is right now. His interest in film came way back in high school where he did a bunch of short films but it was never about being an actor. Vishak knew films was his calling but believed that it was behind the camera. Only when he reached college and was introduced to theatre did he realize his passion for acting. Is this what they mean by god’s calling? If yes, can somebody please tell me where ours is? He auditioned for the role of ‘Kuppi’ in the film ‘Anandam’ for the fuck of it and ever since he got it, he hasn’t looked back. “The Malayalam film industry has a very strong comedic influence.”

With a strong background in theatre, it’s safe to say that physical comedy is something that comes pretty naturally to him. Although, the Malayalam film industry had other demands. With Malayali audiences resonating to dialogue heavy sarcastic comedy, Vishak had to adapt. And that’s what he did. Although he still believes that visual humor hasn’t fully been explored in India, yet. After the success of ‘Anandam’, Vishak has been super busy with multiple other projects, his IG game and his own production house called ‘MadGenius Production’ which he runs with ‘Anandam’ director, Ganesh Raj. In the midst of the hustle, Vishak hasn’t had the time to go back to live performances as he thinks it’s a whole other ball-game in comparison to cinema. While it’s obvious he’s comfortable in a comedic role, he wants to go out there and try fitting all kinds of roles before even thinking of creating a niche for himself. He plays a variety of characters in his upcoming films. So guess who’s seeing more of Vishak Nair? ALL OF US!

The minute we heard that, we started

If you love documentaries like ‘Making a Murderer’ and ‘Serial’ this mockumentary series will definitely get you laughing your ass off. The show revolves around two guys, Peter and Sam as they document the horrible crimes committed in American schools. The first season follows a horrible prank that left faculty cars vandalized with graphic drawings of penises and the second season revolves around someone contaminating the cafeteria lemon juice with laxatives. If these two storylines aren’t enough to get you binging, then why do you have Netflix, bruh?

For all you horror movie buffs, here’s one that will send shivers down your back. Ghoul revolves around a dystopian India where a radical government is at its peak. Nina Rahim (Radhika Apte) is asked to interrogate a feared terrorist. That’s all we get to tell you cause spoiler alert: The show is pretty frightening.

This show was supposed to be here in the first edition of Dayum but just like you, we procrastinated and now, here we are telling you that the show was fucking insane! If you are someone that likes psychological dramas with a hint (lots, actually) of dark humor this show might just be a dream come true. It follows the lives of strangers, Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill) who connect during a pharmaceutical trial. Not exactly your everyday meet-cute isn’t it? dayum! | OMG Watch This!

Honestly, the film Gods blessed us with this one. The story revolves around a blind pianist trying to complete a musical piece he’s been working on. Of course, no blind man’s life is this simple but this movie has everything that would keep you on your toes that is, romance and murder. Pretty great, eh?

The most awaited movie of the year based on the infamous life of Freddie Mercury and his journey with British Rock band Queen. This movie is the perfect tribute to the legendary band and let’s just say Rami Malek is Freddie Mercury reborn.

America’s favorite immigrant is back! After ‘Afraid of The Dark’, The Daily Show Host, Trevor Noah talks about the first time he met Obama and how he didn’t particularly enjoy his vacation to Bali. With his extraordinary range of impressions and wit, he whips out his A-game to a sell-out auditorium in LA.

f you’ve not got the time to commit to an entire hour of jokes, head straight to Stand-ups on Netflix. With multiple comics performing for 30 mins each over 2 seasons, this is perfect. Now, our personal favorite is Mr. Nate Bargatze. His on-stage persona is goofy, tired and clumsy, hence he reaches out to our souls. He’s noted down observations from experiences such as performing in a jail to being stranded in a shady den with snakes, crocodiles and whole lotta children.

British humor is unique in its own way innit? Russell Howard is in your face with his energy, pace and absolutely beautiful rendition of life and what it’s worth. This is a must watch in our humble - you better watch it - opinion. dayum! | OMG Watch This!

Documentaries can often get boring but here’s one that will grab your attention by the balls; so make sure the popcorn’s poppin’. Wild Wild Country is about Guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh who was also known as Osho. Many know him for his controversial ways but very few know about Rajneeshpuram, a community he started in Oregon, USA. The documentary explores the effects of Adderall through a series of interviews with patients, doctors, students, athletes, and more. The ADHD prescribed drug is popular among students to enhance their performance. An interesting angle the documentary takes is interviewing those who’ve stopped taking the drug along with tracing the drug’s history.

One of our favorite news websites sheds light on several topics that have an impact on our day to day lives. From talking about the female orgasm to Marijuana and even the depths of something as simple as the exclamation mark, this is the equivalent of “a good read”. dayum! | OMG Watch This!

The film follows events that occur in Aruvi’s life. She’s a rebellious girl trying to bring out the misogynistic nature her society lives by but also trying to find meaning to her life. An existential crisis will always find its way around life. The movie came out almost a year ago but it’s still something that is being talked about FUN FACT: The movie’s budget was 1 Cr and it made about 35 Cr in the box office!

This is another movie that was released a year ago but still needed a mention. Lady Bird is a coming of age movie that follows Christine McPherson and her rocky relationship with her mother. The movie shows her growth and her relationship with her family, as well as the struggles she faced when it came to finding ‘the one’. In between all of this, she tries to achieve her one big dream (i.e) to go to New York to study. If there’s one thing life has taught us, it’s that, if you want something hard enough, you’ll probably get it. dayum! | OMG Watch This!

dayum! | A Parallel Universe

dayum! | A Parallel Universe

Intense. It’s safe to say storytelling makes or breaks a film. While the art of storytelling is crucial for every single thing that hits the screen, when it comes to shared universes, the stakes are just a lil’ bit higher. The idea of depicting a shared universe on the big screen has become exponentially popular across the globe. The likes of Star Wars, Fast & Furious and of course, the Marvel franchise are setting the box office on absolute fire.

Marvel mastered the art of storytelling on screen with a plan that was supposed to last years.

Hold up, what is a shared universe? Well, you know how Tony Stark and Spiderman are both from New York and have been fighting crime side by side without knowing of their existence until they met in Civil War? Yeah, that. Basically, when one film or character is based in the same world as other films or characters is when a shared universe is created. These films and characters are set in the same universe and have independent storylines of their own running simultaneously which may or may not meet with one another.

dayum! | A Parallel Universe

The initial Avengers (i.e) Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk apart from Hawk-Eye (Jeremy Renner) and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) all got stand-alone film/s before they met in the ‘Avengers’ in 2012. It all began way back in 2008 with Iron Man when people had doubts about how Robert Downey Jr would be the perfect fit to play the genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist. Oh, they were so, so wrong. While we all thought that these films would just pass have its own sequels and become individual franchisee’s, Marvel had other ideas. These films served a very strong purpose, which was to reestablish our favorite superheroes back in the limelight. All the stand-alone films before the ‘Avengers’ (Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor & Captain America: First Avenger) had one thing in common: All of them were background stories depicting who these people were as humans (or Gods) before the superpowers and its fair share of responsibilities arrived. Their characterization in these movies were critical to how the universe and what lay ahead of them panned out.

dayum! | A Parallel Universe

We’ve all dreamt of waking up with a spider hickey on our neck, haven’t we? Hoping that the next time we rolled our fists, we’d be spitting web to save the universe. Or at least, open the door while sitting on the sofa. With so many characters involved in a shared universe, each character has a distinct characteristic which differentiates them from one another Apart from their superpowers, of course. Marvel absolutely slayed this game! They took full advantage of the fact that they had a lot of time to show each character’s personality trait. With independent films for their lead characters and even for their supporting cast, each character got ample amount of screen time to evolve into the characters that we love so much. While Marvel’s characters are completely fictional (we think), they’re still very fucking relatable. Each one of them have characteristics that we see in ourselves and that’s why we they always hit home. They made us believe that even superheroes have flaws and villains might just have a heart (If you didn’t cry when Thanos pushed Gamora off the cliff, your heart is made of stone). For example, Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008) is seen as the arrogant rich kid with access to whatever he wanted and whenever he wanted it. He had no feelings and no respect for the people around him.

He eventually grows into dating Pepper in Iron Man 2 and is seen bonding with Spiderman as if he were his own son. We kinda miss the arrogant son of a bitch. The last time we saw him in Infinity Wars, he’s seen discussing the thought of a family with Pepper which is something you’d never expect from the Tony Stark of old. Another remarkable scenario is the growth of Thor. Initially perceived to be a person who’s serious, uptight with a mighty sense of pride and honour, we see a complete turnaround in Thor: Ragnarok (2017). He’s let loose and we finally see past the massive muscles for the soft-hearted cutie that he is! Especially in the famous scene “He’s a friend from work”. While the film usually revolves around different ways superheroes save the day, the conflicts set in these films go way deeper. They are more humane than they seem to be, hence hitting the right chord with us. For example, in Civil War, Captain America has to choose between Iron Man, a friend who’s trying to avenge his parent’s death and Bucky, his long-lost friend who killed Iron Man’s parents. Even Captain America had a really tough decision to make. Either choose to stand for what’s right or stand by a friend. They nailed this emotion in Black Panther (2018) as well. While the villain’s methods may have been radical, many people walked out of cinemas strongly believing in the ideals of Killmonger over Black Panther.

dayum! | A Parallel Universe

Hell, we fucking are! Across the world, queues filled with anticipation and excitement just keeps getting larger and larger. The love for cinematic universes is unreal! A bunch of theatrical releases doesn’t suffice the love it’s received over the years. Their culture is now ours, people of earth. Point in case? Marvel. (Duh, bruh) Marvel’s significance began way before the films were ever released, with comic books celebrated by many but, the Marvel cinematic universe has just taken it to the next level. With hundreds of comic cons happening each year, thousands of cosplays happening every day and millions of fan theories written every hour, we’ve kinda lost our shit over these fictional characters. With the fan base growing each day, there isn’t any looking back. Guess the guy who pitched to you was right, it had revolutionized the way cinema is looked at. Money well spent, I guess.

Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar are growing immensely. With new pieces of content dropping every month and subscription prices being super affordable (okay, kinda), there is a growing trend on picking ‘Netflix and Chill’ over ‘Dinner and a Movie’. As millennials who work on convenience rather than effort, we often wonder if this is the reason streaming services are as successful as it is now. When new movies hit the theatre every Friday, we often tend to shrug it off because, let’s be real for a second, we know it’s on its way to Netflix or Amazon Prime real soon. Let’s look at the Pros and Cons now shall we?

PROS:

PROS:

• You have access to thousands of shows and movies with a monthly subscription.

• The big screen is exciting.

• You are in the comfort of your home (we mean bed).

• The sound system is to die for.

• Wanna watch a movie at 3 AM? Hell yes, time can totally be your bitch.

• The seats are suuuuupper comfy.

• Still fascinates us with 3D, 4D.. 7D! CONS:

CONS:

• Tickets are expensive.

• Subscriptions can be pricey

• Snacks are even more expensive (How, just how?) • Must stick to a time (otherwise, you’ll miss a good set of trailers.. or depending on your sense of time, the movie itself!)

• The wait for a new movie or show to hit the streaming services can be a pain. • The joy of watching movies at a theatre exists otherwise, your nearest INOX and PVR would have probably shut down. • Then again, binge watching a show for 2 days straight also seems like the ultimate life goal. Not forgetting the fact the fact that there are beer cans in your fridge *wink wink*.

• And did someone say ‘National Anthem’? Wasn’t me.

dayum! | It’s a Dream Stream

According to a survey conducted by National CineMedia, 50% our generation watch movies out of passion. Which isn’t surprising considering a lot of movies are worth watching on the big screen rather than waiting for it to show up on streaming services. Moreover, streaming services also let you watch what you want on demand and because of this a lot of old shows and movies have come back into the light. In India especially, content on streaming services stand out. There is no genre that does not have Indian content under it and it is easy to access an unlimited amount of content for a monthly service. Moreover, the censorship laws in India are quite an inconvenience which online streaming services don’t need to give a fuck about. So you won’t hear a *Beep* or a see a random jump cut while watching whatever you’re watching. Sacred Games, Inside Edge or Mirzapur, would haven’t been the same if it was aired on Indian Television. Thanks to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar all of these shows are shown the way they should be.

For a country like India, downloading content on “Torrentz” was like giving candy to a child. You would keep wanting more! You couldn’t stop yourself, even though it was a virus to your life (in this case, your laptop). Considering now you can jump onto ANY streaming service at affordable rates. It’s all about convenience, really. Streaming services not only provide you with content that has been aired earlier, but they also produce a huge amount of original content including stand-up specials. YES PLEASE! Comedy specials, all day everyday. Towards the end of the day, we’ve come to realise millennials just depend on convenience. They don’t have the patience to wait for a movie to come on Netflix and neither do they have the patience to download a show off any Torrents website. So, they still go to the movies and pay their streaming bills monthly.

Netflix is one of the highest revenue earners in India. However unlike the other streaming services Netflix runs Ad-free and that’s mainly because they are focusing on testing new forms of content on its platform. dayum! | It’s a Dream Stream

Celebrating film this month we thought we’d leave this section out and add more films for y’all to watch, only to realize that there have been some insanely great movies based on books. Sure, the famous saying ‘The book was better’ exists but here are some books that y’all might have not read cause the ‘movie was better’ but we are here to prove you wrong.

The story is set in New York post World War II, revolving around the Corleone family and the mob war they are fighting with 4 other mafia families. The initial release of the book was in 1969 and the film adaptation starring Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, James Caan and many more came out in 1972. The movie has 7 Oscar nominations and won 3 Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Mario Puzo also assisted with the writing of the screenplay. The book was on The New York Times Best Seller list for almost 67 weeks and sold over 9 million copies in 2 years.

Set in Kabul during the fall of the Afghanistan monarchy through the Soviet military intervention, The Kite Runner is a story about Amir, his father and his best friend Hassan. It’s actually more than just their lives, it’s also the rise of the Taliban regime and Amir’s growth as a young man with a sad past. The story is told to us by Amir and one of the main themes explored in this book is guilt and redemption. We see this when he talks about Hassan and his father, both relationships he blames himself for having ruined. The intensity of Hosseini’s words is something you cannot get from the eponymous movie but please do grab a pillow and some tissues, it’s going to be a sob fest and you’ve been warned. dayum! | OMG Read This!

The Help revolves around African-Americans working in white households in the early 1960s. The story is told to us by 3 women - Aibileen Clark, Minny Jackson, and Eugenia Phelan. All in a first-person narrative. They talk about the racism, the hate and even the violence they faced while working for the uppermiddle-class white folk. The book was on New York Times Best Seller list for over 100 weeks!

Movie making is an art. We often get lost in the world created on screen but we forget the magic and effort put off-screen. This Facebook page is honestly the best find when it came to the art of scripting. Don’t get us wrong, they don’t give you a 10 minute tutorial on how to write a script but what they do show you is a split screen that has a scene from a movie along with the script to that scene. We see how every word is transformed visually and if you don’t get goosebumps after checking the page out, you my friend, might have to get checked out. dayum! | OMG Read This!
