WELCOME // OLLIE DEVON Hello and a warm welcome to the magazine of the Athletic Union, Undod! This issue aims to give those of you who are perhaps new to Cardiff an insight into the amazing array of sporting activity the AU organises and hopefully upon reading this you too will want to get involved and become a member of an AU club! There really is something for everyone, so make sure you join a club online or browse the 60 clubs that will be showcasing their unique activities at the Sports Fayre on the 28th of September! If you are already a member of a club, why not send the Undod team your stories, photos and results and we will do our best to feature you in the magazine. We are also looking for willing volunteers to join our Undod team this year so if you fancy getting more involved with the AU pop up to the Third Floor and let me know you are interested!

The Athletic Union is the body that supports all sporting activity at Cardiff University. We support students that run over 60 sports clubs including individual and team sports, outdoor and water sports and martial arts. Cardiff University’s sporting successes are widely recognised, with high-performing teams, over 60 clubs, and a record finish of 12th place in BUCS 2010-2011. There really is something for everyone whether you are looking to keep fit, compete, learn something new, or just enjoy yourself. The AU also runs the largest Inter Mural Games league in the country, a number of recreational sporting leagues including 11-a-side football, 7-a-side football and netball, providing weekly fixtures for teams from your course, halls or society.

What is img? Want to get involved in regular sports with teams from across the University? Then you need to get involved in the Intra Mural Games (IMG). There are three very active leagues playing weekly fixtures:

11 a side football 7 a side football netball Teams are made up of groups from various courses, departments, or just groups of mates. They play each other throughout the year to decide which tops the league. You can either get a group of friends together to form a team, or you can look at joining one of the existing teams - many are keen to take new players on board.

how to register a team If you want to get a new team together, entry and registration costs £250 for 11-aside football, £55 for 7-a-side football and £120 for netball. Registration opens on Monday the 26th of September and the deadline is the 10th of October. Freshers, why not form a team with your new flatmates?

AU Events varsity

au's got talent

The annual clash between Cardiff and Swansea is the AU’s biggest and best event. A day of fierce competition in an array of sports ends with the big one: the rugby match at the Millennium Stadium. Crack out the facepaint and show your Cardiff pride - this year’s Varsity on the 2nd of May is seriously not to be missed.

Cardiff AU’s own unique take on Britain’s Got Talent is without a doubt one of the greatest nights of the AU calendar. Laughs, nudity, and some surprisingly professional dance moves are all to be expected. Each team has 3 minutes of music to impress the pane l of judges and in a final fiercer than BUCS, winning is everything.

charity calendar

Au awards

Every year clubs and teams aim to raise as much money as possible – by wearing as little as possible. The semiinfamous charity calendar captures the AU’s finest in a variety of tasteful (and less so) gatherings, one for every month of the year. You’ll never look at a foam finger in quite the same way again.

The year ends with the AU Awards Ball, celebrating the successes of clubs, teams and individuals over the past year. After lots of wine and a 3-course meal, colours and club honours are presented, and the awards themselves. These include fresher and club of the year, and the AU President’s Outstanding Achievement award.

dodgeball

The hugely popular Dodgeball Tournament returns for its third year. Teams must have between 5 and 10 players, and it costs £15 to register a team. Teams play at least 5 games, plus some massive last man standing matches, with prizes for the winners. Team fancy dress is always appreciated so get creative, and imaginative team names are more than welcome!

varsity// 09

VARSITY The 2nd of May sees a grudge match of epic proportions play out across Cardiff. Varsity sees Wales’ two premier universities clash in over 20 sporting events to find the deserving winner of the Varsity Shield. This symbol of all-round sporting excellence has never been lost by Cardiff – and this year will | be no exception.

CARDIFF // VS // SWANSEA 2nd may 2012

Students from both Universities cheer on their teams throughout the day at venues across the city. Finally, the atmosphere reaches fever pitch at the main event: the fight for the Varsity Cup at the home of Welsh rugby, the Millennium Stadium. Despite successive home wins at Cardiff Arms Park in 2008 and 2009, Swansea have taken the cup back to Neath for the past two years. Rather than denting Cardiff’s pride, this just leaves the team even more determined to bring it home on the 3rd of May – and then round off this immense day of sport with one almighty celebration at the Lash’s exclusive official Varsity Afterparty.
