This document reaffirmed the attitude of the international community towards the fundamental values of humanity: freedom, equality, solidarity, tolerance, respecting the environment and sharing responsibilities and emphasized the relevance of solving serious problems in reaffirming peace, respecting human rights and ensuring sustainable development and environment protection. The social exclusion of certain groups and persistently high poverty rates amongst these groups is a significant factor currently compromising the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by individual countries. Roma are widely considered as such a group deserving particular attention in terms of achieving of MDG targets. The challenges for the Roma ethnic group are well known: overcoming poverty, improving access to education and developing marketable skills. Developing policies to assist the Roma requires access to reliable data.
