Issue 5
This time of night I could call you up I'd get angry with athletic ease, break common laws in twos and threes If I die clutching your photograph Don't call me boring, It's just 'cause I like you Take me on back... take me back To the place where I could feel your heart Is this the end or just the start of Something really, really beautiful Wrapped up and disguised as something really, really ugly, Won't you... Come by and see me, I'm a love letter away I'd break your name before I'd say, "I really love you, love you, " I don't care if you saw, I watched every inch of film Flash across your Roman features, And I loved it, loved it; I don't care if You think I'm eager to shut your eyes, well I'm sorry-everybody knows you can't break me with your gutter prose Would you believe it, she sent me a letter, The ring, it nearly weighs her down, she's got another boy, oh boy Steady your ears... read my lips Poetry is not a luxury, it's how I'll break this home And when I'm really ill, won't you cradle me? Man is not a noble animal, but maybe woman is, remember, I heard you...
Voxtrot—The Start Of Something
Inside your room, you said, "You never really live Until your back's against the wall, " oh did you really mean it? I never break my gaze, if just to see this scar remain reflected in your eyes I think it's time to go home Oh, tell me your thoughts, tell me your thoughts on liberty, See there's a place where I sink to sleeping Oh, my vote is as red as my blood Will you join me for another round? I haven't had the chance to speak yet God speed... I break the law once every week to feel your touch, What's a book to you in bed, Do you feel better, older? This just makes me ill, your name is dripping from my pen Still you're not around to curse,

The start of something by Voxtrot is probably one of my favourite love songs. It’s has “desperate, teenage love” written all over. The kind of feelings you have with the start of something.. Valentine’s Day is coming up and it’s one of my favourite holidays. Hearts and pink all over, how can you hate V-Day? This is the inner girly me speaking, we didn’t go all pink this issue but there are some love themed pages.. Looking forward for issue 6, see you in spring dreamers!

Her
way of
navigation She stood still, admidst the crisp night air, hearing the waves, as they broke again and again upon the shore. Above her the night sky, like a blanket, was strangely comforting. The tiniest speck of a star could be seen far off to the East. She knew there to be more, but the city lights drowned them out, like they drowned so much of the mystical. No wonder she thought, that it was hard to navigate through life's waves, When all around was covered beneath noise and disarray, how could you chart a way? But somehow being pulled out of it, she had come to a place of her own, found a knowingness that felt like her true North. Like a winding pathway through, she had regained not only her direction, but also her connection. And she was unwavering in her determination to keep to it.
Granted there was little to distract her And when the winds blew up around her, she remained firm, yet still allowing them to shape and move her. The gusts so strong at times she feared she may lose her home, her place of belonging, even her roots. Yet these same seemingly heartless winds, had also aided her, she could see that now. How they cleared her mind of debris from the past that was untrue, allowing new awareness to take hold. How they shifted her onto a different course altogether, than what might have been. She and she alone, knew what it took to have ridden these storms, and to have still held to a love for the Ocean itself. She had sought to hear her heart and to honour it, that had become her compass and comfort. It was not for reward or for attainment. It was as necessary to her as taking each breath. To follow it, was what kept her alive. It was her air, her starlight, her way of navigation.

Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself?
What kind of materials do you use?
My name is Estibaliz Hernández de Miguel and I am a self-taught artist and illustrator. I live in Bilbao, Spain, with my husband and two daughters and I work under the name of Pintameldia (this stands for Paint my day, sort of). Like every other kid I enjoyed drawing and coloring but like every other teenager I soon forgot all about it. In fact, I didn’t really start painting until I was almost thirty. I had always been surrounded by artists and musicians and a moment came when I needed to do something artistic of my own. After painting for several years, I started drawing because I could do it in a limited space, with limited resources. And I always liked telling stories.
Right now I draw on paper with black pens and only use paper scraps and papercuts to add color to the drawings. I might have only used gouache or acrylic on rare ocassions, but for now, I am very fond of my fine pens, my scissors and my piles of papers. The only time I now turn to Photoshop is when working with color for the Thomas & Olivia series, which are some of my children illustrations. Everything else I do by hand.
Are you a fulltime illustrator?
Which of your illustrations is your fav. And why?
I’m a full time artist, working on my personal and collaborative projects, and doing illustration works on the side.
My favourites are always the last couple of drawings I’ve done. After a while, I become a little detached from the pieces I make. The constant learning makes me very critical with my previous work.
If you could do a group exhibition with anyone you want, who would it been?
Clare Rojas, Marcel Dzama, Betsy Walton, Thereza Rowe, Anke Weckman, Mia Christopher, Sarajo Frieden, Katy Horan, Jennifer Davis, Jen Corace, Carson Ellis, Evah Fahn, Allyson Mellberg-Taylor, Jeanna Sohn, Julie Morstad, Danna Ray, Lady Desidia, Verónica de Arriba, Ricardo Cavolo… I don’t know… there are too many people out there doing art that I like!!
What’s your dream assignment?
What would you like to accomplish in the future?
I dream of seeing my art on posters or record covers by bands I like. I dream of making the cover art for books by writers I read. The best assigment is when I have to work on new things, like skateboards, clothing or stationary, for instance.
Lately I’ve been focusing on making a living solely out of my art. It turns out that I am very happy doing this and it reflects positively on my daily life and my family. Also, I’d love to keep on learning how to communicate through art. Apart from all this, art related, I’d love to manage my time better, to travel more, to visit those of my friends who live in faraway countries, to read as many books as possible, to tidy up my home and to have a big and wonderfully lit studio.
Do you have a valentine? Yes, but he’d be ashamed of being called a valentine. Let’s say we are not very romantic.
Have you ever written a love letter? Yes, when I was young, romantic and naive.
In which way is your personal life reflected in your art?
What’s your favourite film and why?
I guess that since my work often has its origin in my dreams, there’s always something personal in them. Also, I come from a big family, full of strong women so it feels right to draw feminine characters and I hope to reflect how women interact, how they believe in magic and myths, how they support family traditions and, ultimately, how they are mirrors of my own existence.
I don’t have a favourite, but there are some movies I could watch over and over: “Cat on a hot-tinned roof”, because of Paul Newman’s and Elizabeth Taylor’s great and sensual acting; “Blade Runner” and “Star Wars Episode V”, because they are part of my childhood; “The apartment” and many other black & white films, because I grew up watching them on tv; and “Lost in Translation”, because it is pretty and has a great Bill Murray in it.
What inspires you? Images and words. And dreams. And music. The last couple of years I’ve been writing down part of my dreams. Basically scenarios where people gather and talk to me or among themselves. Sometimes I put together dreams and music lyrics and see if they work. While some other times I see a photograph in the newspaper or a still of a video or a movie, or I browse a book, and then a picture sprouts in my mind which I need to draw. I don’t know where the inspiration comes from, but it passes through me like if I don’t own it until it’s drawn on paper. In my personal artwork I am always inspired by femenine interaction and the feeling of sharing a special moment. I am attracted to magic and how women take spirituality naturally. ♥
