University for the Creative Arts

Oscar-winning film-makers, world-renowned fashion designers, television presenters, celebrity jewellers and Turner Prize nominees are just some of the high-profile graduates from the University for the Creative Arts. As a specialist University, we have created a unique community for our students, where like-minded people can share in the creative process and inspire one another. Collaboration between courses is encouraged, with fine artists studying with budding film-makers and fashion designers working alongside architects. In this way, our students benefit from exposure to a range of disciplines. We pride ourselves on our industry-standard facilities. Our campuses are home to workshops for ceramics, glass, wood and metals where students can experiment under the supervision of technicians with extensive industry experience in their field. There is extensive studio space in painting, sculpture, fashion and film-making; radio and TV facilities for trainee journalists; stop motion equipment for animators and an industry-standard Gerber suite for fashion pattern cutting.

The Conference The University was pleased to host FAB at Farnham, the latest FAB (Foundation and Beyond) conference in November 2013. FAB at Farnham followed in the established tradition of FAB Conferences which began in 1995 and is intended to provide information and insight, as well as a networking opportunity to anyone involved in the progression of students from Further to Higher Education in art, design, architecture, craft or media including film. FAB at Farnham delegates included leaders of Foundation Studies, Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma courses as well as GCE A-Level tutors, curriculum managers and careers advisors or teachers of art and design subjects in earlier stages of the curriculum. We also recognise the Conference to be of interest to those involved in the planning and regulation or funding of creative arts education or the future employment of students from the sector. Nearly 100 delegates from across England, Scotland and Wales attended FAB at Farnham and listened to four distinguished or influential decision makers in exploring current developments in pre-degree Art and Design education. We look forward to inviting you to the next FAB Conference and FAB Art Exhibition at UCA. You can keep in touch with the FAB discussions and watch for details of our next conference by visiting our Further Education School website: http://schools.ucreative.ac.uk/.

The Speakers FURTHER EDUCATION WITHIN A HE ENVIRONMENT Dr Simon Ofield-Kerr Vice Chancellor, University for the Creative Arts The University for the Creative Arts has over 150 years of experience with supporting Art and Design students through various previous institutional incarnations. Simon Ofield-Kerr and his dedicated teaching teams are responsible for inspiring and nurturing over 7,000 further and higher education students. He could not be better placed to speak about the influence and importance of pre-degree level enquiry and its unique position in Art and Design education within the UK. Simon’s reputation for improving the student experience is unparalleled. His support of pre-degree level enquiry is unquestionable; Simon focused on the importance of the FE sector to Higher Education, its current position within the sector and his strategic thoughts for the future.

PROGRESSION INTO HIGHER EDUCATION AND THE ROLE OF UNIVERSITIES IN DEVELOPING FE COURSES Nick Juba Director, UAL Awarding Body The UAL Awarding Body has recently emerged from within the creative arts education sector itself and is rapidly becoming established as the pre-eminent awarding body for Further Education provision in creative arts and media. In the spirit of the Wolf review and its subsequent reforms, the opportunity for Universities to guide the journey through the school and predegree experiences that prospective Higher Education students must navigate, is on the agenda. Nick has steered the awarding body, in a few years, from foundling enterprise to a rapidly expanding and successful specialist accreditation body. Nick has significant experience of regulation and governance within FE. With his colleagues and the sponsors of the awarding body, he has engaged with the sector in developing refreshingly coherent “fit for purpose” Foundation Studies and Diploma qualifications, along with a range of shorter courses. Nick

shared the awarding body’s recent research findings into effectiveness of A-Levels in preparing students for Foundation and beyond, as well as plans for a similar review of GCSE.

THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE FOR ART AND DESIGN Rebecca Vaughan-Williams Business Manager, BTEC Product Management, Pearson UK Recent months have seen a raft of changes in the UK vocational education landscape, from the government’s consultation on Level 3 vocational education, to the introduction of 24+ learning loans. The changes have resonated widely and may mean that vocational qualifications like the BTEC Nationals in Art and Design will need to undergo change to continue to be recognised in the current educational system. There are also potential impacts on the way curriculum is built. Rebecca provided an overview of the activity of the last few months, explained some of the key changes and posed some of the questions: “What are the main changes to funding?; How might this impact of Level 3 and Level 4 provision?; What do the government requirements for Level 3 vocational qualifications look like?; What are the changes proposed to the way that vocational qualifications are recognised?; What opportunities are there for centres to understand and respond to the proposals?”.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF ART SCHOOL? Deyan Sudjic Director, The Design Museum, London His career has spanned journalism, teaching and writing. Deyan was Director of Glasgow UK City of Architecture 1999 and in 2002 he was Director of the Venice Architecture Biennale. He was Editor of Domus Magazine from 2000 to 2004 and was Founding Editor of Blueprint Magazine from 1983 to 1996. Deyan has published many books on design and architecture. His most recent book, Shiro Kuramata, was published by Phaidon in June 2013. In his keynote talk, Deyan focused on British art schools and their contribution to our culture, past, present and future.

FAB Art Exhibitions

The University kindly supported a number of prizes and the FAB at Farnham Conference offers congratulations to:

Helen Jillott Vice Chancellor’s Purchase Prize Judy Dibaise University for the Creative Arts at Canterbury Purchase Prize winner We continue to value the professional practise of delegates to the FAB Conferences and recognise their dedication to creative practise. Creative practise is vital to the teaching and learning process in the very best traditions of excellence in Art and Design education in the UK. Delegates were invited to participate in a touring exhibition that was to be held in the galleries at UCA Farnham during the conference and travel to Tokyo during 2014. The works will be exhibited in the galleries of the Japan College of Foreign Languages. The College has a long tradition of preparing students for studying art, design, craft, architecture and media in the UK. The exhibitions reflected the wide range of techniques, media and conceptual thinking characteristic of the breadth and expansive nature of the courses on which colleagues teach.
