Welcome to... UCA Canterbury Welcome to... UCA Epsom
With its historic surroundings and its gorgeous café culture, Canterbury is a lovely place to live and experience while you study at UCA.
Our campus is located just on the edge of the city, its Cathedral and array of shops, cafés and restaurants just a short walk away. You’ll discover new things all the time, with a wealth of attractions, galleries and museums to explore – not to mention you’re just a short bus ride away from the Kent coastline for sunny days.
Popular spots for students include The Penny Theatre pub, with its live sport, meal deals, karaoke and quizzes, and for a tasty snack on the go, Cite Crepes is a hit. You can see blockbusters alongside the best indie releases at the Curzon Cinema, or have a day out at Howletts Wild Animal Park for a change of pace.
A relaxing hang-out area for students is Westgate Gardens, which runs alongside the River Stour, and we couldn’t talk about Canterbury without recommending a visit to Canterbury Cathedral itself, with its incredible architecture and stained-glass windows.
Our Epsom campus is located just on the edge of the town centre of Epsom, where you’ll find everything you need – from shops, bars, cafés and restaurants to nights and days out.
Popular spots include Rosebery Park, opposite the university, for socialising and relaxing, and The Faraday pub where regular karaoke takes place, as well as bottomless brunches, live sport, weekly quizzes and an extensive vegan menu too.
For shopping, there’s the Ashley Centre shopping mall together with a large range of high street stores, and if you want a bigger day out, you’re close by to Epsom Downs racecourse, and theme parks Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures – and you’re only a short train ride from the centre of London.
There’s also the Epsom Playhouse, with regular touring shows, famous stand-up comedians and tribute acts on the bill for a night out with a difference.

My UCA story
“I always say UCA was one of my favourite periods of my life - final year being the highlight. It was the most intense but best time, I made lifelong friends and really understood what kind of designer I am as well as picking up so many skills. We were always encouraged to go as far as we could with our research and the whole development of the design process, which was my favorite part. The tutors were great at seeing what worked for us individually as students and designers and steered us in the right direction.”
Aissata Ibrahima graduated in Fashion Design 2016, and now runs her own acclaimed sustainable fashion brand.
“I honestly loved my time at UCA. I felt like a name and not a number; my course leader, lecturers and tutors all took the time to get to know me and my year group. They knew each of our strengths and worked hard to get the very best out of us. I made friends for life who are as passionate about design as I am, and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know them.”
Emily Kelly graduated in Graphic Communication (now Graphic Design) at UCA Farnham in 2016, and now works as a designer for Surrey Satellites Ltd.
“The reputation of the Film Production degree course was the main reason I picked UCA. I had a great three years and made several friends I’m still in touch with to this day. There’s nothing quite so satisfying as being around like-minded people and I certainly met lots of people I connected with on my course. That was probably the most rewarding aspect of my time on campus.”
Jamie Seal is an awardwinning documentary maker and graduated from UCA in 2003 with a degree in Film Production.
17 UCA MINI GUIDE 23/24 16 international.studies@ucreative.ac.uk
“My time at UCA was transformative — I started the course very much still in a teenager’s mindset and graduated with a clearer focus and drive towards my creative career.”
— Jasmine Haskell
Jasmine Haskell graduated in Design for Theatre and Screen at UCA Rochester in 2016 and is now a freelance set designer and puppet-maker.

Craig Luck
(Writer: Finch)
BA Film Production, UCA
A great many of our filmmaking graduates go on to enjoy full and busy careers behind the camera, from location scouting and costuming, to editing and supervising scripts for continuity. Hollywood dreams do come true – and if you needed proof, just ask 2010 graduate Craig Luck. While Craig was studying at UCA, he wrote a script for a then short film, which garnered some interest within the industry. But while prospects for the film simmered under the surface, Craig got on with his career, working behind the scenes on Kenneth Branagh’s re imagining of Cinderella, cult series Sense8 and Marvel origin story Doctor Strange.
Then he got the call. The script was sold, with director Miguel Sapochnik, and none other than Tom Hanks in the titular role. In 2021, FINCH was premiered on streaming service Apple TV+.
Gareth Edwards
(Director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) Film and Video, UCA
Farnham graduate Gareth Edwards has directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the next installment in the iconic Star Wars franchise. Edwards was welcomed back to UCA in 2012 to be awarded an Honorary Masters degree for his work in film.
Edwards began his post-university career in visual effects working on projects for the BBC, before getting his break with the 2010 budget sci-fi film Monsters. He not only wrote and directed the film, but also created all of the special effects which resulted in a nomination for an Outstanding Debut award at the BAFTAs.
Kate Herron
(Director of Disney+ series Loki) Film Production, UCA
Herron grew up in southeast London, near Thamesmead. Herron began her career writing and directing short films, such as Frank and Rest Stop. She started her television career in 2017 working with Idris Elba on Five By Five, a five-episode drama from The Idris Takeover for BBC Three.
Two years later, she directed four episodes of the Netflix series Sex Education. She also directed one episode of Daybreak, another Netflix series. In August 2019, it was announced she would be directing and executive producing the first season of the Disney+ series Loki.

Banksy to be made an Honorary Professor of UCA
The University for the Creative Arts (UCA) announces that the street artist and political activist, Banksy, is to be made an Honorary Professor of UCA, in recognition of his humanitarian efforts and the impact he has had on the global arts scene.
Known for his distinctive stencilling technique that combines humour with graffiti, as well as his 2010 Academy Award-nominated film, “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” and numerous projects that highlight other artists and humanitarian causes, Banksy’s identity remains a mystery.
Mark Baker is an English animator and producer whose works include the Oscar-nominated short films The Hill Farm (1988), The Village (1993) and Jolly Roger (1998). He is also known for co-creating Peppa Pig (2004–present) and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom (2008-2013).
Creative Update spoke to Mark about his experience as an animation student at Farnham, and his successful life after college:
Are there any memories of your time studying that stand out?
I think it was in the very first term, in 1979, that the animation students went to the Cambridge Animation Festival. I just soaked up the films. Everything seemed exiting and important. I had not the slightest doubt that being a Farnham animation student was the best thing to be in the world. And this feeling carried me through the three years. I was sad when it came to an end and I had to enter the real world.
Dame Zandra Rhodes is UCA’s Chancellor Emerita - a role she took up after serving as our first Chancellor from 2010 to 2018.
Dame Zandra Rhodes has been a notorious figurehead of the UK fashion industry for five decades, celebrating her 50th year in fashion in September 2019 with a retrospective exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum –founded by Zandra – entitled Zandra Rhodes: 50 Years of Fabulous and a retrospective book published by Yale. Her notoriety as a print designer combined with an affinity for fine fabrics and colour has resulted in a signature aesthetic that is undeniably unique and continues to stand the test of time.
An eponymous pioneer of the British and international fashion scene since the late 60’s, Zandra’s career has seen her collaborate with brands such as Valentino, Topshop and Mac Cosmetics. Continuing to collaborate with brands that inspire her, 2021 will see the launch of Zandra Rhodes x IKEA amongst many other exciting partnerships and projects.
Naomi
Campbell receives Honorary Doctorate from UCA
Global fashion icon, activist and philanthropist, Naomi Campbell, has received an honorary doctorate at this year’s University for the Creative Arts (UCA) summer graduation ceremonies.
Dr Campbell received her doctorate to great applause at the graduation of UCA Epsom students on 7 July 2022, in recognition of her contribution to the global fashion industry.
Professor Bashir Makhoul, President & Vice-Chancellor of UCA, said: “Having fronted the covers of thousands of magazines and featured in advertising campaigns for celebrated global brands, Naomi Campbell is a fashion icon who is real inspiration for our graduating students.”

Living at UCA
Moving away from home is a big moment. Wherever you’re staying while you study –campus halls of residence or privately rented flats, houses or lodgings – you’re about to have your first taste of independence in a diverse and tight-knit creative community, and we want to make sure you feel settled and happy.
Here’s what you need to know about accommodation at UCA.
1. We offer an accommodation guarantee
If you’re a first-year student on a higher education course and you apply before the January UCAS deadline, we guarantee that we’ll find you a place to stay in your first year – either in our halls or in other rented accommodation.
2. Our accommodation team is here to help
Each campus has a team of staff who can help you with your accommodation needs. They’ll provide you with all the information you need and be on hand to help with any issues, from maintenance and emergencies to complaints and organising residents’ committees.
3. It’s best to apply for your halls place early
We have a range of halls accommodation on offer – including new buildings at UCA Epsom and UCA Farnham – and offer rooms to as many new full-time students who want to live in halls as we can.
If you’ve firmly accepted an offer from us, you can apply for UCA halls accommodation through the Applicant Portal. Don’t wait for your exam results to come through first –applying ASAP will give you the best chance of getting the accommodation you want.
We priorities applications based on need. Students who have a disability, new international students, and those who live furthest from campus will have priority for places in halls.
4. It’s worth considering a private rental
If you don’t want to live in halls, or aren’t offered a room there, you can rent privately. Our accommodation team works with a network of agents and landlords near each of our campuses, and we’ll find you a homely and safe place to stay.
Private rentals are a great option if you want to live with a smaller group of people, or are looking for a little more independence. This accommodation is often slightly separate from the campus and more in the heart of town life, which may suit you better.
“We’re here to make sure everyone looking for a place finds one, and will be on hand to help with information and advice.” says Hayley Rowe, Accommodation Officer at UCA Farnham.
For more information or to learn about our accommodation guarantee, visit: uca.ac.uk/study-at-uca/accommodation/

Portfolio advice Portfolio tips
At UCA, we’re know you’re about more than just grades. To us, exams are only part of the picture – your creativity and what you can do are just as important. Which is why, when you apply to most of our courses, we ask to see a portfolio or invite you to an audition.
Your portfolio is a collection of your best work; you might want to show us sketches and paintings, digital art and design, photography, fabric swatches or patterns, sound work, musical compositions, short films, or even essays and creative writing.
At our Applicant Days (or in an Online interview if you submitted your portfolio digitally), we’ll get the opportunity to meet you and learn more about you as a person. They usually take place between December and March, and are a fun, informal next step in the application process.
We want to see what inspires you, what you create and what makes you unique. And if your course doesn’t ask for a portfolio but you still want to show us your work, we’d love to see it anyway.
1. Share your thoughts
We’d like to know how you approach your work – what inspires you, how you come up with ideas, how you research them and what plans you put in place to make them a reality. A sketchbook (physical or digital) is a good way to do this.
2. Take us on a journey
Show us your work’s journey from start to finish. Include drafts, unfinished products, edits. If you feel a particular project shows off your strengths, then put it in – even if it didn’t work out how you expected.
Remember that we’ll want you to talk us through your portfolio at your Applicant Day or interview, so prepare some notes, too.
3. Put your best work front and centre
Don’t save your show-stopper for the last page – get your favorite pieces in early. We want to be wowed by you! We’d also like you to put your work into some kind of order – perhaps arrange it chronologically, or by theme.
4. Keep it tidy
A professional-looking portfolio will help you make a positive impression. Include about ten to 15 pieces of work and, if you’re compiling a physical portfolio, mount each piece on white or off-white board, and keep your portfolio either entirely portrait, or entirely landscape (it’s best not to mix).
If you include any audio or video in your portfolio, it should be under two minutes long.
5. Prepare to get digital
If you can’t come to an Applicant Day, you can upload your portfolio to your Applicant Portal. Once we’ve received your application, we’ll let you know about next steps.
6. Steal the show
More questions about your portfolio or audition? Visit uca.ac.uk/study-at-uca/ applying-to-uca/portfolio-advice or drop in to a portfolio advice session at one of our Open Days.
For some courses, we’ll invite you to an audition, where you’ll be asked to perform a monologue. It’s best to pick the text you feel most comfortable with, as you’ll need to memorise it and be prepared to perform it in more than one way.

Entry requirements
When looking at whether to offer you a place on one of our courses, we will consider your academic credentials alongside the creative talent shown in your portfolio, if required.
International Pathway Courses
For our International Foundation in Creative Practice and Integrated International Foundation courses, we usually require minimum of 12 years of schooling with good grades. For countries where 11 years of schooling is comparable to this level of entry, this will be accepted.
For our Integrated International Pre-Masters, we require at least a recognised bachelor’s degree or 3-year diploma with a strong portfolio in a relevant subject.
Undergraduate Courses
For our bachelor’s courses, we require 13 years of education (or the equivalent of A-Levels) with good grades.
Postgraduate Courses
For our master’s courses, we require a bachelor’s degree with good grades. A portfolio is required for applicable courses.
Other accepted qualifications
We will consider other relevant and equivalent qualifications from your home country for entry onto our pathway, bachelor’s and master’s courses. Each application we receive is considered individually and therefore these qualifications are provided as a guide – we may make offers with lower entry requirements to students who have faced difficulties that have affected their performance, and who were expected to achieve higher results.
For more information on the accepted qualifications from your home country, please visit: uca.ac.uk/ international/equivalent-qualifications
