SELAMANYA HOUSE
in Burleigh Waters, on the Gold Coast. “The original house was very closed in and did not make full use of the amazing canal views,” says Di. “It was dated and ugly. We created an open-plan living set-up and added a second-storey parents’ retreat which looks out to the beautiful Gold Coast hinterland. In the original house, there was a sitting room/atrium that never got used, but we still liked the idea. We used that in our reno and now we have a beautiful garden atrium that brings the outdoors in. Our home now has a timeless coastal feel which very much suits Gold Coast living!”

Congratulations to our runner-up!
Elizabeth Rooney’s contemporary renovation is loved because it seamlessly blends modern design elements with traditional features, creating a unique and timeless aesthetic. “The open-concept layout enhances the flow of natural light, giving the space an inviting and spacious feel,” says Elizabeth. “The use of high-quality materials such as marble, brushed nickel and hardwood adds warmth and character to the interior. The minimalist colour palette provides a cohesive and calming ambience, while the carefully curated furnishings and decor pieces add interest and personality. The attention to detail and meticulous craftsmanship throughout the renovation have resulted in a sophisticated and stylish home that is both functional and beautiful.”

GREEN FAMILY HOME
Congratulations to the winner of the People’s Choice award!
Everyone thought Claire and Travis Green were crazy when they sold their new build and purchased this house in Matcham, NSW. “The north-facing land is amazing and we could see the potential,” says Claire. “We always said you can make the facade of any house look the way you want if the bones are good and I think this reno is proof of that. It has been tough living in the house while renovating and it has taken us much longer than expected, but we are so happy with the end result. The hard work has definitely been worth it!”

YAN RESIDENCE
The previous owners of this Caulfield North renovation had an appreciation for the dwelling’s original Art Deco features, says homeowner David Yan. “The existing front of the house was brought back to life, period features were refreshed and modern services were incorporated. The existing area has the formal lounge and dining, plus a guest bedroom with WIR and ensuite. In the new rear extension, the ground-level living areas and three upper-level bedrooms all face north. The family room has large sliding doors opening up to both alfresco and yard. The new renovation is oriented towards the north to take in winter sun to warm up the house, and block out the sun in summer.”

LOCKYER ST PROJECT
Katrina and Claude Capelli say they absolutely love their renovation of their two-bedroom 1938 workers dwelling that’s now a five-bedroom family home. “The restored original Art Deco ceilings are our favourite feature of the home,” says Katrina. “We enjoy having family and friends around on the new deck extension to share our home-made pizzas while taking in a view of Brisbane City. We’re looking forward to creating some fabulous memories in this home.”

HARGRAVE COTTAGE, PADDINGTON
Sally Badger and Joshua Carolan rented this house for two years before it came on the market to buy. “It is a small, 100-year-old workers cottage which was made smaller by pokey rooms and disjointed indoor/outdoor living spaces,” says Sally. “The whole time we rented, we imagined what we would do if we owned the house, how we’d open it up, make it feel more spacious and liveable while keeping the character of the heritage home. This renovation is two years of imagining, thinking and iterating come to life, and it’s even better than we ever dreamed.”

HOUSE
“The house is full of life again after 25 years of ‘it will do’ from the previous owners,” says homeowner Kate Hardy. “Very little structural work was done but everything in the house is new … floors, doors, skirts, hardware, etc. Our house is perfect for our active family and I love calling it home.”
Designer Kate Hardy Builder Nu Edge Building GroupFAMPTONS (HAMPTONS IN FLINDERS)
Ashleigh Murray and Ricky Cullen fell in love with the cul-de-sac street and potential of this house. “We knew it would be our home but it was very dated, with pink walls, cream accents and red brick. It was far from the Hamptons-inspired beach homes we loved. So we decided to bring the Hamptons to Flinders, NSW, instead,” says Ashleigh. Inside, the renovation includes detailed Intrim Mouldings wainscoting, high-end bathroom finishes, and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the pool. Outside includes a pool surrounded by limestone, white Polvin fencing, outdoor kitchen with Caesarstone benchtops, a keg, fridge and Hardiedeck. “It’s resort living and the perfect entertaining spaces for our personalities,” adds Ashleigh.

“As much as the mid-century kitchen still looked its part, it was time for an update,” says homeowner Sarah Nolen. “Our home now reflects our individual lifestyle: family life surrounding the kitchen island and feasting with friends and family. The dark and moody interior isn’t your classic look and that’s why we love it. It reflects our unique personalities and it provides a talking point for everyone who enters our front door. The home is now zoned in a way that provides ample space for multiple gatherings, whether it’s reading our toddler a book on the lounge or a 50-person barbecue on the back deck.”

OVERMAN, PEPPERMINT GROVE
“The original space was 1980s Overman-designed with curved lines, light and flow, but now contemporised architecture brings even more natural light into the home,” say homeowners Joanne and Michael Tait. “Gold accents, ‘braver’ tile choices and interesting design touches create a home. For example, a cellar door — it’s just a steel door with feature glass but bespoke for the room and speaks of quality and high-class finish. Powder and ensuite tiles are bold but in keeping with the overall design elements. The alfresco is now a lovely space, amplified with bifold doors from the kitchen, a good size, bright and private — essential for a Perth home with climate-necessitating functional indoor/outdoor space.”

Do your bit for the Earth with the sustainable Weathertex Natural range
Our planet has an abundance of renewable natural resources that we can use to build a more enjoyable, healthy and sustainable urban environment. Plant-based materials like timber are renewable and available on a global scale. The natural appearance of timber helps a building blend into the landscape.
Timber has always been used in construction, with most individuals attaching positive associations between grown materials and the natural environment. Buildings constructed with greater use of natural materials have the potential to improve the health and wellbeing of those who live and work in and around them, without the legacy of environmental destruction that accompanies the production of other building materials.
It is well established that increased contact with the natural environment improves the health and wellbeing of those living in a primarily urban environment. It would seem
that people respond to natural materials in the built environment in a similarly positive manner.
Weathertex ticks all the green boxes in terms of sustainability and low-cost construction. Timber is the ultimate renewable resource and all Weathertex products are made from 97 per cent hardwood and three per cent wax, which helps to repel water and further increase the durability of the product.
The Weathertex Natural range is a series of un-primed weatherboards and architectural panels that are available in a variety of different profiles. Its high-end design features the knots and grooves of organic timber. When the Natural surface is stained, the look of fresh brown timber can be maintained. Alternatively, the product can be stained a lighter or darker colour depending on personal preferences and the aesthetic of the home.
When allowed to weather naturally, the depth of colour will vary, subject to location and sun exposure. This provides the
environmentally conscious designer with a sustainable solution for their residential and commercial projects.
A durable and versatile cladding system, the Weathertex Natural range is easy to install using standard carpentry tools. Manufactured without any nasty chemical additives, Weathertex uses waste timber from PEFCcertified state forests and controlled sources recognised by the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS). The Weathertex Natural Range is the only timber product to be covered by a 10-year warranty against rot, split or crack. It is also the first manufactured product in the world to receive Platinum Global GreenTag certification. Made from a mix of Australian hardwoods, with the ability for the timber to be aged and stained, there is the capacity to attain an amazing spectrum of colour to make your next project one of a kind. Weathertex is the healthier cladding choice, naturally. HD weathertex.com.au
WHERE PERFORMANCE MEETS GOOD LOOKS
Maximise savings with high-tech, stylish fans
Something homeowners don’t realise is that an air-conditioning system doesn’t have to be a feature of every home. While some people might be holding onto memories of yellowing fans in older homes that only push air to a certain part of the room, the reality is that ineffective and unattractive fans are a thing of the past. Instead, today’s ceiling fans are highly effective and stylish additions to any home, and present an outstanding proposition in comparison to power-hungry cooling systems. With almost every Australian searching for savings as the cost of living soars, including electricity prices, it’s time to get clever about spending choices.
What’s great about today’s high-tech fans is that they do a fantastic job of cooling a space,
but use a fraction of the energy compared to air-conditioning systems — making them a sustainable addition to your home as well as one that’s financially savvy. If you already have airconditioning installed, then the addition of fans can significantly reduce the need for turning it on, which adds up to big savings long-term — for the environment and your bank balance — making ceiling fans the perfect choice for people with an environmental conscience.
Haiku ceiling fans by Big Ass Fans are an ideal choice. The company goes to extraordinary lengths to understand the engineering of airflow products and create energy-efficient solutions that have maximum impact. A powerful combination of design and performance, the efficient and whisper-
quiet brushless DC motor of the Haiku delivers powerful airflow while using only a small amount of energy to cool your home. In fact, to run a Haiku fan 24/7 costs an average of $14.88 per year based on current energy prices, while air-conditioning units cost upwards of $2505. Servicing of a fan costs $110 annually compared to around $1200 for an airconditioning unit. These are dramatic savings, to say the least.
Engineered with cutting-edge built-in smart home technology, the Haiku ceiling fans are compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant so they can switch themselves on and off at scheduled times, while motion sensors mean they can modify their speed when they sense more or less people in a room. Available
in 1.3m, 1.5m and 2.1m diameters, the cleverly designed blade means the fans can scoop up large amounts of air and slowly push it down where it’s needed most — meaning you can have your Haiku fan on low (further decreasing your energy usage) and still feel a powerful cooling breeze.
Handcrafted with premium materials into a sleek aesthetic and the winner of more than 75 international design awards, they are perfect as an indoor feature fan for living rooms and master bedrooms, and an essential accessory for covered outdoor spaces. The Haiku Universal Mount is a great option for ceilings between 3.2m and 4m high. For low, flat ceilings between 2.4m and 3.4m, Haiku’s Low-Profile Mount is your go-to, and for pitched ceilings or heights outside of this range, there are specific optional drop-tube kits.
Rather than being stuck onto a ceiling purely as a functional tool like the fans of old, the Haiku fan presents as an elegant addition to your design aesthetic, blending in with five different finishes in sleek bamboo or aircraftgrade aluminium. Add an optional LED light for luxurious illumination and you’re all set for entertaining or relaxing in comfort. For added peace of mind, all Haiku ceiling fans for residential homes come with a five-year warranty for indoor fans or a three-year warranty for outdoor fans. Find the entire Haiku range at Heat & Grill Richmond in Melbourne, or at the Big Ass Fans showroom in Brisbane. You can also browse the website and tune into the Big Ass Fans podcast for more information. HD bigassfans.com/au/haiku/

This certification assures that the product is free of harmful substances and is safe for babies and toddlers.
For people with back issues or significant need for support, the award-winning Emma Diamond Hybrid is a perfect choice. A premium hybrid mattress, it moulds to your body due to its adaptive comfort foam and pocket spring construction, cradling pressure points while supporting your spine. Optimised for deep sleep, it offers seven-zone dynamic support from each layer. Featuring Emma Diamond Degree® patented technology, the graphite foam is infused with diamond and graphite particles to
ensure excess heat is dissipated and you never sleep hot. The Diamond Degree® graphite foam also features low rolling resistance, so you’re less likely to wake yourself up or be disturbed by your partner in the middle of the night. The Adaptive Comfort Foam layer is ergonomically designed to allow you to sleep comfortably regardless of your build or sleeping position, while the HRX foam has incisions to allow the mattress to adapt to your body, and the individually encased steel pocket springs provide superior breathability and dynamic response.
Both mattress models feature handles for easy set-up when placing them on your bed frame. RIGID TO THE CORE:
LUXURY VINYL FLOORS
Discover the Korlok premium rigid core flooring solution from Karndean Designflooring
Karndean Designflooring launched Korlok rigid core format flooring in 2018 to immediate success. Since then, it has become a favourite flooring solution among homemakers and designers, not only for its realistic and natural appearance, but also for its practicality in installation. The premium rigid core luxury vinyl flooring range features 20 wood-look planks and
12 stone-look tiles developed to complement a wide range of interior styles.
The Korlok rigid core range features proprietary K-Core technology, a 5G® click-locking mechanism and a specially formulated acoustic backing. Combined, these characteristics have resulted in a floor that looks phenomenal and is whisper quiet even in hightraffic areas. In fact, noise transfer between
rooms is reduced by 21dB, helping to maintain a peaceful home and making it the perfect solution for multi-storey homes or apartments. Korlok promises quick and easy installation over most existing hard floors, and it can hide subfloor imperfections, resulting in fewer disruptions to your space.
Korlok offers a wide choice of realistic natural designs, from those inspired by American,
European, and of course local Australian wood species to those that mimic the modern and contemporary look of stone surfaces.
Within the wood range, customers can choose from Australian spotted gum; trees that flourish in coastal areas along the eastern seaboard of Australia, such as blackbutt; Australian hardwood that was sourced from the very north of New South Wales, or butternut; boards that Karndean designers sourced from the eastern parts of the United States; and many others. In short, the vast selection of individual planks can create an authentic wood-look floor that adds instant appeal to any space.
If stone is more your style, the Korlok rigid core stone palette features tiles inspired by contemporary concrete, smooth and subtle limestone, traditional terrazzo and elegant marble, perfect for creating a timeless backdrop in your home.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular options within the Korlok range.
WARM SPOTTED GUM
The popularity and appeal of using authentic Australian woods has soared over recent years. Each colour variation highlights different features contained within the design, adding to the already extensive list of features that make the product so distinctive and attractive.
WARM ASH
This floor offers a warm, mid-toned board that gives off a consistent and neutral colour, making it a favourite with contemporary designers.
Its straight grain details allow your floors to perfectly match with modern, Scandinavianinspired interiors.
CANADIAN URBAN OAK
Canadian Urban Oak boasts hints of deep blond, lightly brushed to enhance the natural light colouring. This floor is the perfect all-rounder, complementing all interior styles and as such, would work particularly well in open-plan spaces.
TEXAS WHITE ASH
Recognising the trend for tiles with light tone board, Texas White Ash will always be an ideal choice to match with elegant interiors. Inspired by European and American woods, the combination of its neutral tones and straight grain details will add a crisp, clean finish to any interior.
PEBBLE GREY
Using concrete as a key theme for interior finishes has climbed its way to the top over the past few years, banishing the ‘grey and dull’ stigma it once had. The design has evolved into a clean contemporary style that features depth and character and creates a visually appealing palette. Korlok Pebble Grey continues to be one of the most popular stone-look floors as it imparts warmth and elegance to a solid industrial material, making it appealing for both commercial and residential applications.
MEZZO PERLA
Originally found in Italy, this type of design — Terrazzo — is currently enjoying a revival in both
residential and commercial areas. Unlike real stone, the Korlok Mezzo Perla is warmer and softer underfoot, bringing a contemporary terrazzo design with a pale-grey background and darker grey and white mid-sized chips, suiting the ongoing preference for a more neutral design.
RIVER STONE
This faint chalky-coloured veining design boasts a neutral, understated colour tone. The porous nature of limestone gives it a great staining capability, allowing degrees of recolouration that are impossible with most other types of stone. It has a smooth yet worn look which will work well with both traditional and contemporary interiors.

ENTERTAINER’S DELIGHT
Step inside this stunning family home built for longevity and made for entertaining
This modern home, renovated by Smith & Sons Ryde, boasts supreme indoor/ outdoor flow, an open-plan interior and a pergola-covered outdoor space with seating by the pool. It’s hard to tell just by looking at it, but the previous incarnation of this Sydney
home comprised a series of enclosed spaces that lacked functional flow or sufficient natural light. Housing a dated 1960s-style kitchen and bathroom, the dwelling featured a living space that was less than ideal, particularly considering the inhabitants’ penchant for entertaining.
Owners Luke and Vanessa were after a modern, industrial aesthetic for their home.
“After spending many a Christmas or family celebration at their house, it became evident the planning didn’t accommodate Luke and Vanessa’s love of entertaining,” says designer
Monika Branagan. “The new open-plan layout allows more natural light to flow into the space and the new doors and canteen-style window provide a great flow between outdoor and indoor living.”
Working within the existing footprint, the internal renovation comprised work to the kitchen and laundry. The new kitchen features appliances and fittings from Smeg, Franke and Caroma. With a statement gantry over the island, the kitchen provides the owners with plenty of space, while the laundry incorporates wine storage as well as washing facilities. The kitchen opens out onto the living and dining
area, which leads directly to the back deck and new pergola that was constructed using blackbutt posts.
To complement the dark flooring (Cyprus tongue-and-groove boards stained black), Monika set about creating a strong blackand-white contrast with industrial pops coming through in the kitchen’s concrete-look benchtops and concrete-look feature paint. To cement the industrial vibe, the overhead shelving exudes strong industrial charm, softened with styled planting and VJ ceiling lining. “I copied the detailing of the existing doors and added a mosaic tile feature floor
to blend the existing older-style home with modern architectural details,” Monika adds. “With a large amount of space dedicated to wine storage, the net result is a home built for hospitality and great parties.”
Black and white and more than alright, this Smith & Sons renovated home is an inspiration for anyone hoping to update their tired-looking abode and improve their standard of living. HD

Create your dream home with Intrim’s new Selections in a Box ranges BOX OF TRICKS
Selecting the perfect mix of skirting, architraves and wall panelling just became a whole lot simpler thanks to Intrim Mouldings’ new Selections in a Box ranges. Each style box contains samples picked for you by experts. One example is the inspiring Hamptons selections curated by the queen of Hamptons style, Natalee Bowen from Indah Island.
New styles have been added to meet leading Australian styles from Farmhouse, Country, Victorian, Georgian, French Provincial and the newest additions, Modern Contemporary and Art Deco. Many types of mouldings and wall panelling can be used across a number of different styles. Often, all it takes to create a specific look is subtle differences in the profile shapes or combinations of mouldings.
The Modern Selections in a Box range focuses on six modern styles: Contemporary, Mid-Century Modern, Art Deco, Coastal Modern, Box Modern and Scandi Barn. Each has one curated collection of timber mouldings to achieve the style, taking the guesswork out of selecting timber mouldings.
So which style is the right fit for you? To simplify the decision-making process and
determine what look is best suited to your home and your personal style, it’s important to understand what each style entails.
CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary refers to present-day style and is characterised by modern, sleek and minimalist designs featuring sharp lines and simple geometric shapes. An open floor plan, minimal decor and efficient use of space are key design features. In terms of colour, there is a focus on neutral tones including white, black and grey contrasted with bold, bright hues. Create a contemporary look with Intim’s Shadowline SK800 skirting.
MID-CENTURY MODERN
Mid-Century Modern emerged in the United States between the 1940s and 1960s. This style is characterised by clean lines and modern materials including steel, concrete and glass. Large windows, flat or low-pitched roofs and an open floor plan combined with natural materials like wood and stone are also often incorporated into the design aesthetic. Mimic the style of a Mid-Century home with Intrim’s raised shadowline skirting and architrave SK342.
ART DECO
Art Deco originated in the 1920s in France and followed the popular Art Nouveau movement throughout the 1930s and ’40s. Embraced by Hollywood, it is identified by bold geometric shapes, mirrored surfaces and rich materials such as chrome and glass. With bold patterns, highly contrasting colours and a focus on glamorous living, Art Deco is a combination of traditional luxury and elements of modernism that creates a timeless design style. Adopt an Art Deco aesthetic with the bold patterns and lines of Intrim’s Cavetto wall panelling.
COASTAL MODERN
Coastal Modern is a combination of coastal vibes and modern design. Popular in Australia, this style is underpinned by natural materials; clean lines; soft, relaxing “coastal” colours and open spaces. Natural light, wood furnishings and a swathe of blues and greens inspired by the sea add a breezy touch that perfectly wraps up this relaxed style. Capture Coastal Modern style with Intrim’s SK37 skirting and architraves that feature soft, clean lines, coupled with Wainscoting wall panelling.
BOX MODERN
Box Modern is a style of home identifiable by the use of box-like structures, sharp geometric shapes, open-plan living and minimalist design. Multi-purpose spaces and built-in storage are all interior staples in a Box Modern home that focuses on functional design above all else. Neutral shades and materials like
metal and glass are common components that finish off this sleek, sometimes industrial look. Achieve Box Modern styling with Intrim’s SK1474 boxed shaped skirting and architraves with wall battens.
SCANDI BARN
The Scandi Barn style is inspired by traditional Scandinavian barns and farmhouses. Featuring gabled roofs with a steep pitch, Scandi Barn homes often feature an open floor plan with exposed beams and lofty ceilings. This style focuses on creating a warm environment by incorporating natural materials such as leather, wood and stone throughout the interior.
