PLANNING & DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTORS

Landscaping has enjoyed the benefits of being a critical component in the success of our built environment for many years. With recordbreaking growth in the building industry and ever-expanding cities being developed across the country, the landscaping industry has experienced continued growth in recent years, supporting many small to medium businesses and creating thousands of jobs.

Throughout 2020, as Australia deals with the fallout of a global recession due to the COVID-19 pandemic, landscaping will form an integral part of the predicted construction-led recovery for our country, as a vital element of the broader building and construction industries. This is particularly important as access to nature and greenspaces is directly linked to wellbeing, especially during times of increased community stress. Landscaping professionals build and maintain urban and residential greenspaces, providing communities and residents with the critical physical and mental health benefi ts desperately needed in these times.

The ability to secure qualifi ed and experienced staff to cope with the demand from residential and commercial markets remains one of the biggest issues that continues to be experienced by landscaping businesses right across the country. The low numbers of school leavers considering a trade as a career must be addressed, and I would encourage every member, no matter how big or small, residential or commercial, to do two things: support your local school or district career events by promoting this great industry, and employ at least one apprentice every year.

Reskilling unemployed workers to fi ll skills shortages presents a new and challenging opportunity in 2020. The input of two landscape specifi c advocates to the Industry Reference Council (IRC) will help ensure that future outcomes in the development of national training qualifi cations in landscape design, construction and maintenance addresses the skills shortage, while simultaneously contributing to Australia’s post-pandemic recovery.

I congratulate each state association and the members of those bodies for their tireless and enduring work in what has been a disruptive year. Their ability to adapt and always remain fl exible to ensure that landscape professionals remain at the forefront of the industry in terms of integrity and professionalism will, ensure consumers continue to reap the rewards.
