Study Units International Year Zero takes place over three terms. You study a selection of units to enhance your abilities and understanding before you enter year one at the University. ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES This unit continues to develop your English Language skills, helping you to build confidence in your ability to pursue a higher level of studies in English. The unit is taught over two terms. This enables us to gradually introduce you to the more specialist language that you need for the study of the content subjects such as Introduction to Business and provides you with a vital preparation for the later years of your degree. INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS Introduction to Business does not require any previous experience of the subject, except in your personal experiences as a customer or employee. You will look at small local companies and wellknown multinationals and see how they are structured and organised and understand the reasons why. All companies, big and small, have to grow and survive in a particular national or international context so we will look at some of the factors that have an impact on the way they work and ultimately on their long-term survival. IT COMMUNICATION SKILLS This unit looks at the gadgets and software that we use on a day to day basis both socially and for work and examines how they can be used most beneficially. We know that you will have different levels of skill and knowledge of computing when you start the course so the aim is to support each one of you in improving those skills and knowledge in preparation for your degree studies.

20

MATHEMATICS FOR BUSINESS AND THE SOCIAL SCIENCES This unit is the first of two that aims to ensure that you have the mathematical skills and knowledge to cope with the mathematical content of your degree course. It is for non-specialists and includes maths that is also useful for everyday life. In this first unit you will be able to check that you can remember the maths that you did at school and also ensure that you know the terminology in English for the different types of calculations that we talk about in mathematics. INTRODUCTION TO BRITISH SOCIETY This unit allows you to explore contemporary British society through sociological and psychological theoretical frameworks and develops your understanding of British social practices and institutions. During the unit you will examine key issues of psychological and sociological importance, such as society and communities, family and social policy. COMPUTING – DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY This unit will build on the foundations that were developed in ‘IT Communication Skills’’ and develop your knowledge and skills in using widely available computing design packages. The content is fundamental to those who wish to go on to further studies in computing but also very useful for students who wish to study other subjects. The aim is to enable you to be proficient in producing professional standard digital materials such as on line newspapers and magazines, facebook and web pages which you could use in your course work or for work purposes.

INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS We are accustomed to meeting statistical information in our everyday lives, for example when we read headlines claiming, for example, that 55% of children are overweight. What lies behind the headline? How was the figure of 55% calculated and how reliable is it? This unit is designed to build on the foundations that were laid in term one and prepare you for the work that you will do later on in your degree in relation to statistics. BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT This unit serves as an introduction to the study of economics and builds on the work done in ‘Introduction to Business’ in relation to the external factors that impact on the environment in which businesses operate. It helps you to understand in more detail some of the terms that you hear in the news such as recession and inflation and what these mean for different types of businesses. We will look at how the supply of raw materials and the ability to produce change and how competition and changes in customers’ needs and taste influence the demand for goods. Finally we look at the global environment and how the economic environment impacts on companies that work across the world. MANAGEMENT STUDIES This unit introduces you to some of the work that managers do and looks at why they work in this way. Building on the knowledge of organisational structure in ‘Introduction to Business’ it examines issues and techniques associated with managing people and links into the psychology and sociology unit and the work done on group dynamics to look at team working within organisations. ACADEMIC STUDY SKILLS This unit is designed to practise and develop the range of academic language and skills involved in university level study: reading strategies, note-taking, seminar skills, research skills and critical thinking. It builds on the work that you have done in terms 1 and 2 and aims to develop your expertise in the skills and strategies required for the types of task that are typical of university level assessments. You will demonstrate the skills you have developed during the unit by undertaking a small research project and reporting your findings in a written report delivered to your class through a brief presentation. 21

One of our Student Advisers will support you through the whole application process. Below is a step-by-step guide to what will happen once you submit your application: Step 1 A Student Adviser will contact you to discuss any questions we or you might have about your application and to ensure you have sent all relevant academic transcripts and certificates of English language qualifications. If there is a gap of nine months or more in your studies we will ask you to tell us what you did during this time (e.g. work, travel etc.) Step 2 We will carefully review your application and check that your academic qualifications and level of English language are suitable for entry onto the LBIC Stage 1 of your chosen degree programme. You may be asked for a valid SELT (Secure English Language Test)*.

Step 3 Assuming your application is successful we will send you a formal Conditional or Unconditional Offer of a place - usually within 48 hours. Step 4 As soon as you are ready to accept the offer of a place you should send us your completed Acceptance Form and pay the advance fees as required. Details of how to pay are on page 35. Step 5 Advance payment of the remainder of your LBIC tuition fees is required prior to enrolment. Step 6 Once you have accepted your offer and your CAS is assigned, we will also confirm with you whether you require accommodation and will help you to make the relevant arrangements. Step 7 You will then need to use the CAS to apply for a visa (if necessary). Step 8 Advance payment of the remainder of your tuition fees will be required prior to your arrival at LBIC. If this is not possible, please pay the balance before enrolment.
