ADVANCED GENERAL PRACTICE NURSING LEVEL: 7 CREDITS: 30 DURATION: 30 weeks (part-time) UNIT CODE: NUR013-6 LOCATION: Luton campus This short course enables you to develop high-level clinical skills and an in-depth understanding of the diverse complexity of working in an unpredictable environment. Building on your existing knowledge, the course aims to enhance your competence in complex decisionmaking, to deliver evidence-based healthcare. The premise of the course is underpinned by the essence of nursing

and the values of caring, seeing the patient as an individual, respecting and working within their culture and diversity. The development of the course has drawn on the International Council of Nurses: Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Nursing Network, the Royal College of General Practitioners- Advanced Nurse Practitioner Competencies and the Royal College of Nursing Advanced Nurse practitioners’ guide, to frame the content of the course.

The course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to become an autonomous practitioner within anaesthetic practice areas. You will develop the knowledge, competencies and clinical skills to provide high quality, evidence based, safe and effective care, and to implement appropriate multi-

professional team working. This course will introduce you to the anaesthetic role, from the perspective of the anaesthetic nurse focusing on the delivery of safe patient focussed care. You will be introduced to theoretical concepts underpinning the role of the anaesthetic nurse in practice and assist you to apply this to your practice so that you can be effective in supporting the anaesthetic team under supervision during elective surgery operating lists.

EXAMINATION & ASSESSMENT OF THE NEWBORN LEVEL: 7 CREDITS: 30 DURATION: 30 weeks (part-time) UNIT CODE: CEL044-6 LOCATION: Bedford campus This course seeks to foster in each midwife the values and attitudes of leadership and collaboration whilst recognising that each individual brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will enable them to develop not only themselves but other midwifery practitioners in the advanced assessment of new-born infants and the subsequent management of their care. The key

learning contents of this course are: evaluate the professional role; clinical excellence and patient satisfaction concerning accessible new born examination service activities, within the context of legal, ethical and procedural guidance underpinned by underpinned by the NIPE standards and competencies; knowledge of the anatomical context pertaining to undertaking an examination of the new-born; systems explored in detail, including safeguarding the neonate (FGM in neonates and siblings).

HIGH DEPENDENCY CARE OF THE CHILD LEVEL: 7 CREDITS: 15 DURATION: 15 weeks (part-time) UNIT CODE: CEL048-6 LOCATION: Luton, and Aylesbury campuses High dependency care may take place in any setting where the sick child is cared for and refers to a level of monitoring and intervention beyond that which would be expected on the general children’s ward, 16 |

and which may result in the transfer of the child to an intensive care setting. This course captures the principles of pathophysiology, pharmacology and best practice in the recognition, assessment and management of the acutely ill or deteriorating child.

HISTORY TAKING & PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT LEVEL: 7 CREDITS: 15 DURATION: 15 weeks (part-time) UNIT CODE: CEL049-6 LOCATION: Luton campus This course will provide practitioners with opportunities to develop their knowledge of clinically relevant biological sciences, patient consultation, and physical assessment skills. Additionally, it will advance their analytical, critical reasoning, diagnostic and patient management skills, emphasising effective collaborative approaches in patient management, referral and discharge.

This course aims to equip those holding full (rather than associate practitioner) registration with either the NMC or the HCPC with the knowledge and skills to undertake a clear and concise history and physical examination of the adult patient appropriate to the practitioner’s area of practice. Students will be shown how to use a range of structured and semi-structured tools to assess the client’s physical, mental and social health status so as to determine an appropriate management plan.

This course explores the provision of evidence-based innovative holistic

INTRAOPERATIVE PATIENT CARE LEVEL: 6 CREDITS: 30 DURATION: 15 weeks UNIT CODE: BSH097-3 LOCATION: Luton campus This course enables you to build upon your perioperative experience and to critically analyse the practices required of nonmedical surgical practitioners (also known as ‘circulating’ and ‘scrub’ practitioners) to keep the surgical

patient safe and free from postoperative infection. You will conduct this analysis through participation or observation of the daily processes of the intraoperative surgical practitioner and review the policies that guide them with the aim of ensuring that they are current and evidence based.

MENTAL HEALTH SKILLS FOR HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONERS LEVEL: 7 CREDITS: 15 DURATION: 15 weeks UNIT CODE: CEL051-6 LOCATION: Luton campus Mental health conditions and psychological distress often co-exist with physical illness and impact negatively upon the quality of life and health outcomes. Over 35% of patients admitted to general wards have a dementia diagnosis while15 -20% of patients admitted to general hospital

exhibit delirium. Depression and anxiety are very commonly associated with physical ill health but are often missed during the assessment and treatment process. This course will provide you with appropriate knowledge and skills to manage different mental health conditions e.g. depression, anxiety, mood disorder, psychosis, Attention Deficit Hyper-reactive Disorder (ADHD) in practice.

MENTORSHIP & SUPPORT FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE LEVEL: 6 CREDITS: non-credit DURATION: 15 weeks (part-time) UNIT CODE: BSH075-3 LOCATION: Luton campus, Participating Trusts A central aim of this short course is to enable you to gain a validated mentor qualification, in order to support healthcare learners in practice placements. The course will also enable you to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to support and assess students in practice environments;

acquire a critical understanding of the role and management of an effective learning environment in relation to healthcare students placed within your practice area. To be a sign off mentor you must successfully complete an approved programme and then be supervised on at least three occasions, signing off the proficiency of a student at the end of their final placement

POST ANAESTHETIC PATIENT CARE LEVEL: 6 CREDITS: 30 DURATION: 15 weeks UNIT CODE: BSH100-3 LOCATION: Luton campus This short course aims to develop your understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Post Anaesthetic Care practitioner. Post Anaesthetic Care is the final stage of the perioperative patient journey and as such has unique practices which students will be able 20 |

to embrace and develop as part of their study. The PACU (Post Anaesthetic Care Unit) requires a holistic approach to care encompassing the other stages of the perioperative pathway and their relevance to patient outcomes. These pathways when viewed together allow the student to provide continuity of care to the postoperative patient.

PRACTICE TEACHER PREPARATION LEVEL: 7 CREDITS: 30 DURATION: 30 weeks UNIT CODE: HCE028-6 LOCATION: Luton campus This short course helps those practitioners involved in practice education to develop the necessary skills to teach and assess learners in the practice setting. The course also meets the NMC’s Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (2008) and successful students will be able to

demonstrate achievement of the NMC criteria to be deemed a ‘Practice Teacher’. The course encompasses a combination of theory and practice-based learning. You will gain experience in practice teaching working with healthcare learners under the supervision of a qualified practice teacher and will develop competence in applying and evaluating a range of appropriate teaching and assessment strategies.

PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTIONS LEVEL: 7 CREDITS: 15 DURATION: 15 weeks (part-time) UNIT CODE: TBC LOCATION: Luton campus The current national policy (Mental Health Five Year forward View, 2016) emphasises the need for better scrutiny of the evidence that supports the care of people with mental health problems and/or learning disabilities. The use of a range of psychosocial interventions can significantly reduce symptoms

and improve the quality of life for the mentally ill person and their family as recommended by NICE. The course seeks to address the key question: how can mental health professionals equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to function effectively in advanced clinical roles and provide holistic care to service users experiencing a range of mental health problems?

SPECIAL CARE OF THE NEWBORN LEVEL: 6 CREDITS: 30 DURATION: 15 weeks (part-time) UNIT CODE: BSH071-3 LOCATION: Luton campus This short course is designed to ensure that health care professionals develop the skills required to care for sick newborns within the acute setting. This course also explores the provision of evidence-based and holistic care for the newborn and

their families within the Special Care environment. The content of the course is aligned with the British Association of Perinatal Medicines’ (BAPM) Knowledge and skill framework. Completion of both this course and the High Dependency and Intensive care of the Newborn will result in being Qualified in speciality as set out by BAPM.

AN INTEGRATED PERSON-CENTRED APPROACH TO CARE OF PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA LEVEL: 7 CREDITS: 15 DURATION: 15 weeks (part-time) UNIT CODE: APP010-6 LOCATION: Luton campus, There are around 800,000 people with dementia in the UK, and a quarter of hospital beds are occupied by people with dementia (www.alzheimers.org.uk). A person-centred approach in dementia facilitates a care pathway that focuses on an individual, rather than focusing on their illness or on abilities, they may have lost. This unit seeks to answer the central question: what are the skills and knowledge required by practitioners to support the individual and their family in coping with dementia care and how this is realised in primary and secondary care

for patients and their families? The unit will provide you with an opportunity to review evidence specific to their context of practice or areas of professional expertise with a view to identifying what constitutes “best practice” in the delivery of health and social care to the person with dementia and their careers. The broad aim of this short course is to extend your clinical capability and competence and facilitate the development of independent judgement and problem-solving skills, which provide a platform for harnessing your ability to respond to changing needs in dementia care in an analytical way.
