Before the event she said: “At University I have gained lots of experience in drama performances, which has also involved dance, but The Wiz will be my first musical – and I can’t wait to start rehearsals.” Being the production’s main partner, the University also sponsored four local performers in The Wiz and has offered internship positions to two students. MARIE CLAIRE MENTORSHIP

Students and facilities showcased live on BBC

Co-winner of the Ivy Black award for outstanding achievement, Laura Ferguson, graduated with a first-class BA with Honours in English Studies and won the fantastic opportunity to be mentored by former deputy editor of In Style magazine and online editor of the international women’s magazine, Marie Claire. Grandmother and mother of three, Laura was inspired by her own experiences as she tried to overcome postnatal depression and found that writing provided therapeutic support. In time she realised that she had a talent and developed her personal story into a fictional story. After much contemplation over her future and with the intention to seek a better life for her children, Laura decided to come to the University of Bedfordshire to study English. She said: I’m an example of what can be achieved when you study a subject you love and when you have amazingly dedicated tutors.’

Television production students got a taste of life in the front line of the industry, when Sunday Politics East was broadcast live by the BBC from the University of Bedfordshire’s Luton campus. Five Bedfordshire students were involved in helping the BBC crew to produce the regional segment of one of the BBC’s leading political talk shows, in the University’s TV studios, in advance of the European elections. One of the students who assisted the BBC with the programme – the third time that Sunday Politics East has been broadcast live from the University – was first year media production student Mircea Lupescu, who was given the opportunity to man one of the cameras. He said: “It was a great opportunity to work in a professional environment and in such an exciting way. I feel very lucky that my course can provide this sort of work experience.” Kathryn Wolfe, Senior Lecturer in Media Performance and Course Leader in Television Production, said: “When you

start out looking for experience in this industry, your first job is making tea! Which makes this such a great endorsement, by the biggest broadcaster in the country, of our students and facilities. That the BBC can come here, without their own equipment, and make a live broadcast of this nature is fantastic.” The other students involved were Charles Millen, Charlotte Sayers, Matt DiLiello and Emily Field Gillard.

Meet the CREW Name: Jodie Lockwood Graduated: BA (Hons) Television Production (2011) Job: Appeals Co-ordinator at the BBC Latest show credit: Children in Need Q: Why did you choose to study at Bedfordshire? A: I had been auditioning for drama schools and realised I really wanted to be behind the camera – so I started looking for universities that offered production training. I found Bedfordshire and came to an open day. I was really impressed with the course and the facilities the University offered and applied. I was thrilled when I got a place.

Name: Luke Jessop Graduated: BA (Hons) Dance & Professional Practice (2011) Job: Dancer for 2Faced and Ultima Vez Q: Why did you choose to study at the University of Bedfordshire? A: Great facilities and an excellent campus in a really nice town. Also, Bedford is a great location, not too far from London but only two minutes away from the countryside. Q: Why did you choose Dance and Professional Practice? A: It gave me exactly what I wanted, which is an all-round education in dance, not too specialised but not too basic either. Q: How did this course prepare you for employment? A: I think the course is a great stepping stone into the industry. It helps you out a lot with CVs and portfolios. I’m more organised and more confident as a dance facilitator. Q: How has the University helped you to achieve your career aspirations? A: The University has definitely helped me get the knowledge needed to work as a freelance artist. Q: How would you rate the support you received from your lecturers? A: Excellent. We were assigned a personal tutor at the beginning of the year but if we ever wanted to talk to any other tutor, they were always happy to arrange a meeting. Q: How would you finish this sentence: The University of Bedfordshire is… A: ...a great environment to get you into the industry.

6 www.beds.ac.uk

Q: What was the best thing about the course? A: There wasn’t really one thing – the course gave me the facilities, support, teaching and knowledge I needed to put myself out into the real world. Q: Did you undertake work placements or internships? A: I would not have got where I am now without work placements. The careers department were great at providing links with industry and there were also chances for internships. I started doing work experience in my first year. I can’t express how important that is. By the time I was in my final year I was getting paid TV work because I had experience. It’s the foot in the door you need – then you just have to work hard to impress. Q: How well did the course prepare you for your job? A: The University has invested so much money into new facilities and I think it’s really important in preparing you to work in the industry outside university. Q: What’s your favourite memory of the University? A: Being involved in TV LaB – it was a great achievement for everyone involved!

Name: Adele Marie Cook Graduated: BA (Hons) English Studies Q: How did the course prepare you for employment? A: The course prepared me for employment by introducing me to a wide spectrum of possible careers. The practical writing unit was particularly useful for this. Q: What advice would you give to someone studying at Bedfordshire? A: My advice would be that it will be hard work, but it is a fantastic experience. You will discover things about yourself that you never knew and be a confident person because of it.

Subject Guide Media, Journalism, English and Performing Arts Name: Robyn Sach Course: BA (Hons) Journalism Q: What’s the best thing about your course? A: How supportive my lecturers are, and how experienced they are in the journalism field.

Name: Kathryn Wolfe Title: Course Leader in TV Production and Senior Lecturer in Media Performance

Q: Why did you choose to study at Bedfordshire? A: I visited the Luton campus with some friends, and I thought it was great, along with the facilities. Q: Why would you recommend this course to others? A: Because the lecturers are fantastic, and they really know what they are talking about, as they have been in the field themselves. Q: Do you feel confident that your degree will help you find employment when you leave? A: Definitely. It is really preparing me, and my lecturers really help me build up my contacts and push for work experience. My ideal place to work after I graduate is The Independent or The Washington Post. Q: Have you undertaken work placements or internships? A: Yes. I made useful contacts and gained experience working under pressure for a newspaper.

Q: What is your background? A: Television production. My specific role in the industry was director on news, current affairs, children’s, magazine, factual and dramatic reconstruction programmes for the BBC and ITV. In 2003 I set up Pukka Presenting to train TV presenters and deliver business presentation skills, and I joined the University of Bedfordshire in August 2006. Q: How do you rate the facilities? A: The facilities are excellent and industry standard. The BBC used our TV studio for a live transmission of The Politics Show East, and this year students successfully transmitted two live shows from the TV studio with a live studio audience and simultaneous transmission on livestream and to the Students’ Union bar.

Q: How well do Bedfordshire’s courses prepare students for real-world jobs? A: Exceptionally well. Employability starts from the moment a student begins studying with us. Some students gain work experience while they are here, so by the end of their final year, they are already being snapped up by employers. Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job at Bedfordshire? A: Seeing students develop during their studies and go on to great careers, like CBeebies presenter and former Bedfordshire student Gemma Hunt (pictured above right). Gemma was one of the presenters who contributed to my book So You Want To Be A TV Presenter?

Q: What is your background? A: I did my first degree in English at Loughborough University and my doctorate at Oxford University before going into publishing for a period of time.

Q: Any advice for people thinking of studying at Bedfordshire? A: The course is great, there is so much to learn, and the staff are all amazing!

Name: Alexis Weedon Title: Head of the Division of Journalism & Communications and UNESCO chairholder in New Media Forms of the Book

Q: What do you think is the best thing about the University of Bedfordshire? A: If you have the passion and the initiative, it gives you the opportunity you need. It is very open and supportive of enterprising young people. Q: What is the department’s employability record like? A: Good. Careers in the media don’t always follow a planned path but hardworking students do well.

Q: Does your department offer work placements or internships? A: Yes – we have internships in theatres and a variety of journalism and media companies, plus professional commissions, such as videos, for students to undertake. Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your job? A: Developing the range of activities on offer, and helping staff make your learning more ‘real’ and exciting.
