UCMK applications at an all-time high we are looking forward to doubling our numbers in 2016, because at the end of the main cycle UCAS applications for UCMK courses are up by 100% on 2014/15. Undergraduate qualifications in Events Marketing and Management, and Human Resource Management are particularly popular. Both courses include a placement in industry as a core element of the course, ensuring that students will leave UCMK with all the skills they need to find graduate employment.
Students engaging with industry... On wednesday 24 february, our students had the chance to see what the Milton Keynes technology sector had to offer when we hosted the graduate and Technology fair at Saxon Court. Corporate and SME exhibitors showcased their work and connected with students to share internships, placements and graduate job opportunities. There was also plenty of networking potential, as we had graduates, MK schools, business colleagues and city residents attending.
UCMK celebrates Autumn graduations The families of 150 graduates glowed with pride as UCMK held its Autumn graduation ceremonies at The Church of Christ the Cornerstone, including students from the University of Bedfordshire’s regional partner colleges. In the morning students graduated from a wide range of subject areas on courses ranging from Engineering Business Management to Journalism, while the afternoon was reserved for our teacher training graduates. Attended by numerous dignitaries, including the Mayor of Milton Keynes and our Vice Chancellor, the event was an important opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our graduates. In 2016 we look forward to awarding degrees to graduates whose entire Bachelors’ degree were taught at UCMK. See more pictures from the graduation: unibeds.info/ucmk-grad
MK:SMART Data Hub In October 2015 UCMK officially opened its doors to over 200 guests and exhibitors to showcase the cutting-edge MK:Smart Data Hub. The Data Hub is at the centre of the collaborative MK:Smart project, enabling business, public services and everyday citizens to use data to improve their decision-making. The Apex Suite, our technology and innovation hub, is proving popular with businesses and other groups. Bookings are currently handled through Rajinder Sharma here at UCMK. Rising to the Challenge... Students in six teams from schools in Milton Keynes and Luton had the opportunity to research, design and produce creative solutions to challenging engineering problems through the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) ‘Faraday Challenge’ at UCMK in 2015. The IET, one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, hosted the event in partnership with the University’s department of Computer Science and Technology and its Access Partnership team. Teams from Walton High School, Sir Herbert Leon Academy, St Paul’s Catholic School and Ashcroft High School got the chance to design and create a prototype using new technologies including 3D printers, specialist circuits and design software – resources that many of the students had never used before. New facilities for students In the summer of 2015 the Vice Chancellor unveiled our new UCMK facilities which include a library and quiet study area, business pods, a journalism suite, a graphic art lab, staff and postgraduate offices, and lecture rooms. As a result of the upgrade the campus is now fully equipped to support an increasing number of students studying a diverse and expanded portfolio of courses. Below: New graphics lab
UCMK student internships with Parks Trust Two lucky UCMK students will be given the opportunity to work as interns with the events team at the Parks Trust, supporting major events in its outdoor parks and green spaces including projects such as National Play Day and World Picnic Day. This is a wonderful opportunity that will allow them to gain work experience at the ‘sharp end’ that will put them in an excellent position when they come to embarking on their careers.
